It's all about JRPGS! Japanese Role-Playing Games, what's the deal with that? What makes a JRPG a JRPG? What's the difference with other Role Playing Games? These questions and many more will be answered and discussed by Retrogamepapa together with special guest-knight Leah Haydu (Character Issues, Cane & Rinse). Of course both knights also name off their personal favorites and explain why JRPGs have been so important for them.Retrogamepapa's mic was somehow not working properly, thanks to the magic of Windows 11, that's why he sounds so terrible. Many hours were spent trying to salvage it and make it at least listenable. Hopefully the crappy sound quality won't bother everyone too much. The games and game series discussed (among others) are: Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy series, Persona series, Secret of Evermore, Illusion of Gaia/Time, Terranigma, Dragon Quest games, Squaresoft games, Enix games, Chrono Trigger, Nier series and many more.

This is a special episode we recorded in Melbourne! We were down for Crunchyroll Expo and got to catch up with Sam's old friend Lachlan McAllister who owns Australia's first ever dedicated Esports bar, GGEZ (where this podcast was recorded). Sam and Lachlan started their anime journey together after Lachlan managed to track down a huge supply of VCD's containing the first 100+ episodes of Naruto back in high school (which Charlie also watched). However they started out playing JRPG's together in primary school. This episode is all about the deep connection between JRPG's and anime, how much crossover there is between the fandoms and how much they influenced our lives.    We talk through the Suikoden series, Final Fantasy 7 (and Final Fantasy in general), the Persona series, Dragon Quest and many, many more.

Rachael Hutchinson and Jérémie Pelletier-Gagnon's edited volume Japanese Role-Playing Games: Genre, Representation, and Liminality in the JRPG (Lexington Books, 2022) examines the origins, boundaries, and transnational effects of the genre, addressing significant formal elements as well as narrative themes, character construction, and player involvement. Contributors from Japan, Europe, North America, and Australia employ a variety of theoretical approaches to analyze popular game series and individual titles, introducing an English-speaking audience to Japanese video game scholarship while also extending postcolonial and philosophical readings to the Japanese game text. In a three-pronged approach, the collection uses these analyses to look at genre, representation, and liminality, engaging with a multitude of concepts including stereotypes, intersectionality, and the political and social effects of JRPGs on players and industry conventions. Broadly, this collection considers JRPGs as networked systems, including evolved iterations of MMORPGs and card-collecting “social games” for mobile devices. Scholars of media studies, game studies, Asian studies, and Japanese culture will find this book particularly useful. Jingyi Li is a PhD Candidate in Japanese History at the University of Arizona. She researches about early modern Japan, literati, and commercial publishing. Learn more about your ad choices.
