Jenny, who is of Japanese descent, describes the joy the family felt connecting with her ancestors' homeland as her family bike-packed 600 miles across Hokkaido, Japan (The kids didn't want to leave!). She gets into the shame she experienced growing up with a different sounding last name from her classmates, and how she's come to cherish her ancestry as an adult.Jenny describes how she went from working in finance to landing her dream job as a designer for Patagonia. She keeps it real with her and her husband Scott's challenges of getting pregnant, including two miscarriages; how Scott's Appalachian Trail record-setting run in 2015 injected new life into their relationship despite her sometimes harrowing task of driving around the east coast backroads by herself to support Scott; and the struggle of balancing two young children with starting her own business. Keep on eye out for Jenny's new business, Always Up. (We'll link to it once the website goes live!) It's a gear company for active families, and her debut product is a first-of-its-class maternity belt for runners. Super excited for y'all to check out this week's episode of The BibRave Podcast! Tim and Jess talk with Jenny Jurek - one of our favs - who is an accomplished runner, climber, designer, author, and everything in between. Jenny shares the highs and the lows she experienced while crewing for her husband, Scott, on his Appalachian Trail FKT back in 2015.  In the book she co-wrote with Scott, (NORTH - highly recommend!), Jenny wrote about some of her experiences as an Asian-American female in a part of the country that - frankly - doesn't see a lot of people that look like her. She discusses those stories with Tim and Jess, as well as some of the backlash she experienced from sharing and writing about those stories 5+ years ago.  In addition to the other accolades above, Jenny is also a super mom who just casually takes her kids bike-packing around Japan. She is also an entrepreneur with a super exciting line of maternity products for runners coming out soon! Lots of great stuff here so hopefully you guys enjoy it! Scott Jurek is an ultramarathon legend and arguably one of the greatest runners of all time. Mired in semi-retirement from professional racing and late career stagnation, he set his sights on the Appalachian Trail speed record in 2015. Scott and his wife Jenny approached this project as relative novices and their collaborative narrative account, North, tells the amazing story of their 46-day, 2,189-mile AT adventure. The book is about so much more than running, and in this conversation we interrogate some of those larger topics – relationships, communication, loss, triumph and community. (Photo by Luis Escobar)

Without self awareness, it is very difficult to grow in life. If you aren’t seeing the results in an area of life you are working to get better at, you may need to analyze where you are lacking. You may not be working hard enough. You may not be putting the correct effort in.Instead of looking at how it may be someone else’s fault, find out how you could have improved yourself. Making excuses will never help you to improve where you are at today. Some of the easiest ways to analyze where you are at today is to take a walk in nature on your own, ask a friend, or just sit down and analyze every part of your day.Hosts: Ryan Gardner and Nik HallResources:-North: Finding My Way While Running the Appalachian Trail - Scott Jurek, Jenny Jurek [book]-Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail - Cheryl Strayed [book]Connect & Subscribe:Website: earnedeffort.comInstagram: instagram.com/earnedeffortFacebook: facebook.com/EarnedEffortTwitter: twitter.com/EarnedEffortEmail: hello@earnedeffort.comSubscribe and listen on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Overcast, Google Play, Spotify, or YouTubeLeave a review on Apple PodcastsFollow Your Hosts:Nik’s Instagram: instagram.com/nikolashallRyan’s Instagram: instagram.com/RyanGardnerCRyan's Goodreads: goodreads.com/RyanGardnerC

Scott is one of the best ultrarunners in history, winning the Hardrock 100, Badwater in Death Valley, the Spartathlon in Greece, and an unprecedented 7 wins in a row at the Western States 100. In 2016 he and his wife Jenny took on a personal project, the 2,200mi Appalachian Trail, setting a new FKT of 46 days, 9 hours. This journey became a book on the New York Times Best Seller List, entitled, "North: Finding My Way on the Appalachian Trail." “We didn’t have all the beta … we wanted the full adventure … if we were to go back we would do a million things different. But it was a great experience, and exactly what we needed.” Listen as they describe the range of emotions experienced on an FKT of this length, and how it’s difficult to to write about their friends, who are all very accomplished people, and also colorful characters … and who still are their friends. Jenny predicts how fast the FKT on the AT will go, and Scott describes what is next for him.
