In episode six of our Visionary Remakes season, we explore two versions of the King Kong myth, the original from 1933 and the 1970s remake. We toss in a dash of Peter Jackson's 2005 version as well.Special Guest: Riley - Good friend of the show and true film buff King Kong is a cultural institution. How that happened is still a mystery to us children of the 1980s. We grew up with the original. The 1976 version had been memory holed by the time we were children. The 1933 version is iconic for many reasons honorable or not. The special effects were groundbreaking for the time and its blending of genres was unique. But problematic doesn't even begin to describe King Kong (1933). It is hard to watch it without feeling a strong sense of distaste and unease, even viewing it as a film artefact. The remake of King Kong from 1976 was a bold attempt to one-up Jaws which came out the year before. The summer blockbuster was born, but a big budget and spectacular marketing campaign do not make a hit. The making of King Kong 1976 would probably make for a better movie than what we got on screen. Mired in legal trench warfare, this remake tried to update the King Kong story to incorporate the cynicism of post-Nixon years. It fails mostly, but it does not disappoint. It is an interesting and bizarre watch that is getting reappraised by Zoomers, for better or worse. Lastly, the 2005 version probably needs its own episode. Peter Jackson's King Kong was highly praised upon its release, and it still is held in high regard. But Dan has more than a few bones to pick with its prestige.

did we learn nothing from zardoz? I don't know where to start with 2012's John Carter. Andrew Stanton's first foray into live action, adapting a work that inspired most of the science fiction pulp classics of the 20th century, did not go well. Mired in production troubles and studio tensions, John Carter (of Mars???) bombed at the box office and produced a crater in Disney's finances so deep that entire careers vanished into it.Adam and Aidan were hoping that John Carter was due for a reappraisal. It was not, unless you're of the select camp that enjoys a running joke in which Carter is repeatedly called Virginia. Listen below or find us your podcaster of choice.

Mired in the second division for years with frequent ownership changes, an outdated ballpark and few prospects, Boston entered the 1914 season with second year manager George Stallings, some promising new ballplayers and faint hopes to crack the National League's first division. However, after being swept in July 4th double header, the Braves were back in familiar territory - deep in last place, 15 games behind the mighty New York Giants. What happened next resulted in baseball's greatest come from behind story ever. The Braves caught fire and made a mockery of the National League West, wining by 10 games over the Giants, the league's three-time defending champions. Part One of this two-part series looks at the Braves remarkable season and sets the stage for the World Series against the American League powerhouse Philadelphia Athletics. You can support Hooks & Runs by purchasing books, including books featured in this episode, through our store at Bookshop.org. If a homeless person violated the ban three times, they could face fines or jail time. Though unable to talk with KGW on camera, Schmidt's letter stated that the ban required Portland Police officers to give his office the following documentation when someone violated it:Police report(s) documenting the date, time, location, and nature of the camping violation on each of the three dates.Copies of the two prior written warnings required by PCC 14A.50.025(A).If police are issuing a citation on the grounds that the subject is not “involuntarily homeless,” in addition to the items listed above, we also need an identified witness, with contact information, who can establish that shelter or other options for housing were accessible to the subject on each date in question.Support the show

What is true happiness? For Giovanni, the answer is as far away as the stars. Mired in hardship, the young kitten faces problems that should be unknown to someone his age. At school, his classmates mock and ridicule him, and after the bell rings, Giovanni toils at a job to earn enough money for bread. Then at home, he must take care of his mother. The sole bright spot is that of the Festival of Stars, where he hopes to run into Campanella, his only friend. When they finally meet up, however, it isn't while looking up at the stars, but rather traveling amongst them... --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/otakuology/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/otakuology/support

Climate-induced disasters in Asia and the Pacific have become increasingly frequent and severe, resulting in loss of lives and livelihoods, hampering the post-pandemic recovery and potentially derailing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).The effects of devastating floods, severe droughts and rising sea levels are not confined within national borders; they have international implications too, including for trade, communal tensions and forced migration. Climate change is only making things worse.  Against this backdrop, Vibhu Mishra from UN News spoke to Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), who outlined how countries can reduce disaster risk, and strengthen climate action.

SKIP TO 00:34:00 TO GET TO THE STORY Welcome to Episode 149: The Curious Case of the L8 Ghost Blimp of 1942! Faced with defending America's west coast waters against the submarines of the Japanese Imperial Navy, the U.S. decided to enlist the help of blimps. This first official fleet of “LTA” or “lighter-than-air” crafts in California was named Squadron 32. Based out of the cities of Santa Ana, Moffett Field, and Tillamook, Squadron 32 developed a series of helium-filled blimps fitted with bombs and guns to take to the Pacific Ocean for battle. One of these crafts (purchased from the Goodyear company) was named the “L8”. The L8 had a long and lustrous career, carrying out many top secret missions without incident, but one day in the early dawn hours of August 16, 1942, all that would change when two navymen would mysteriously disappear from the blimp without a trace. The abandoned blimp would later be found crashed in a residential neighborhood - one of its bombs still attached. Some say that hot coffee, sandwiches, and even pieces of the men's clothing remained inside the blimp, undisturbed. Mired in mystery, conspiracies, and intrigue, the L8 soon took on a more sinister nickname - “The Ghost Blimp”. So, what happened to the Ghost Blimp and its two pilots that fateful foggy morning in 1942? Join us as we try to unravel “The Curious Case of the Ghost Blimp of 1942”. A lost game and lost series for the Chicago White Sox as they are mired in mediocrity this month of May. This was supposed to be as easy stretch for the scuffling White Sox. The month of May was supposed to be a time when they would rebound from their awful start. The Sox are now (6-7) in May and (14-28) on the season. They are nine and a half games back in the Al Central. There have been very few highlights lately but Luis Robert Jr. is one of them. He's been having an electric month and was one of the few that showed up against the Houston Astros this past weekend. Lucas Giolito, who has been one of the most reliable starting pitchers, had a rough outing during the series finale and put the Sox in a hole early. The White Sox just don't seem like they can actually put it all together at the same time for a long period of time. Unfortunately, that's exactly what needs to happen.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!BirddogsToday's episode is brought to you by Birddogs.
