Have you ever wondered why some people bounce back stronger from life's harshest blows while others feel stuck and broken? Tune into our latest episode of the Resilient Solutions Shortcast, where I will unpack the four primary ways we react to trauma, adversity, and challenges. Drawing from my experience as an Army Chaplain, Licensed Mental Health Professional, and Crisis Response Specialist, I offer a unique lens on resilience. Inspired by Dr. W. Lee Warren's transformative book "Hope, the First Dose," this episode delves into the emotional turmoil and psychological barriers we face in times of crisis, providing you with practical tools to navigate these stormy waters.Join me as I explore the concept of "crashers"—those who find it challenging to regain their footing after traumatic events—and how these reactions intersect with the disorders discussed in "The Character Edge." You'll gain a deeper understanding of the patterns that lead to emotional numbness and learn strategies to break free from them. With the support of expert insights and research, this discussion is designed to equip you with the knowledge and strength to face adversity head-on. Walk away with not just hope but a robust toolkit to foster resilience in your personal life, relationships, and faith.Link to Blog: 4 Responses to Tragedy, Trauma and AdversityFan Mail Text Space

//The Wire//2200Z August 16, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: VIOLENCE CONTINUES IN IRELAND. GAZA PEACE TALKS BEGIN. QUESTIONS MOUNT REGARDING DETAILS OF TRUMP ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Ireland: Violence continues as a Priest was stabbed in a suspected terror attack yesterday evening. Fr. Paul Murphy was stabbed multiple times by an assailant at the Renmore Barracks in Galway, where he was conducting his duties as an Army Chaplain. He remains hospitalized with wounds not expected to be life threatening. Sentries at the barracks detained the attacker after the incident. AC: Local media reports that Fr. Murphy was wearing civilian attire at the time of the incident, possibly indicating this was a more targeted attack (though this remains speculative at this time).Throughout Ireland protests and demonstrations have remained regular and have become more organized. Thousands have protested in Dublin over the past few days, and demonstrations at the construction site of a migrant center in Coolock have increased in size as well.Middle East: Various diplomatic envoys state that yesterday's first round of Gaza peace talks concluded on a positive note. A joint American-Egyptian-Qatari statement on the peace talks indicated that “the road is paved” towards a ceasefire solution.-HomeFront-Pennsylvania: As the Congressional investigation into the attempted assassination of Donald Trump continues, many exceptionally suspicious details have come to light. Recently, Rep. Clay Higgins (a member of the Congressional Task Force to investigate the incident) released a preliminary report highlighting many discrepancies, including that the body of the alleged shooter, Mathew Crooks, is no longer available for examination due to being released by the FBI for cremation 10 days after the shooting.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: In the wake of the Trump assassination attempt (a mere 34 days ago), the details that have been released (or discovered) have increasingly pointed to nefarious intent by federal agencies, to some degree. At some point, the thousands of hours of content from experts on the matter must reach a consensus. For many, there is already enough evidence in the public sphere to indicate how much of this nearly-successful attack was the result of incompetence, and how much was deliberate negligence. What will be important to consider moving forward, is how serious American politics have become. Last week, Trump's plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Montana due to a mechanical issue. This afternoon, JD Vance's aircraft also made an emergency landing due to a door seal malfunction. Earlier this week, an incident involving Trump's Secret Service detail became public, in which a USSS agent not only abandoned her post at one of Trump's events minutes before his arrival, but also secretly allowed unauthorized persons into the heart of the secure area, even in the wake of the assassination attempt. In any other time, these data points would be easily chalked up to random problems, errors, or general complacency. However, considering the context of recent events it would be wise to account for other more nefarious possibilities. With events of this magnitude, and a machine with as many pieces, it is very unlikely for any one theory or idea to explain everything. Making decisions (and assessing risk) without all of the information is a reflection of the human condition itself; humans almost always have to make judgement calls without knowing the full story.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//

Do You Ever Wonder?Starting his career in the Reserve Officer Training Corps and as a schoolteacher, Father Peter spent much of his time at Our Lady, Queen of Peace on Staten Island, and at the age of 28 decided to dedicate his life to serving the Lord in the Eucharist. Now he has been in the Army for 8 years as a priest first and a soldier second! However getting to the Archdiocese for the Military Services in the first place required the permission of his bishop, Cardinal Timothy Dolan who graciously gave it to him.He has been deployed to combat zones in Iraq and Syria, and has jumped out of planes with paratroopers in Alaska. In his far-reaching role in the Army, Father Peter has also had to say prayers for soldiers who died in combat, blessing their bodies before they made their ‘angel flight' home to their family and loved ones for their funerals.Father Peter also serves the U.S. Army in the role of priest recruiter. His mission is to bring more Catholic priests and seminarians to serve as chaplains in the Army and Army Reserves. Currently, only 90 priests are serving in the military, with another 310 needed. The conversation touched many subjects, not the least of which is the current conflict between Israel and Hamas, coupled with the severe moral injury likely being experienced by a great many soldiers. This subject led us to the Heroes To Heroes Foundation, where podcast host Michael Haltman serves as Board Chair. Christopher Cassibry, COL US Army (Ret), Callsign “Denali 6” has spent his entire professional life in the Service of his People. During this conversation, Joseph talks with his former wartime commander about the making tough calls, remaining calm as a Leader and understanding what it means to “be good with the decisions, one makes”. Chris has held many positions of command in his military career, but one of the most consequential was his time leading 500+ paratroopers during one of the campaigns of the Afghanistan War. Spread over multiple outposts and against a determined enemy, this tour of duty was no walk in the park. Combat is a unique human endeavor and a sheer test of wills- A thinking man's game. If you are not able to spend time thinking about your decisions, you may find it difficult to live with them. Good news is that you don't have to make this decision on your own. Despite the responsibilities of Leadership, especially during a time of war, Chris says that even the Leader needs someone to lean on. This even further applies to the caregivers in our organizations. Whether it's a medic, Chaplain or that Teammate everyone goes to with their problems, a good Leader is aware that the folks who give so much, can be burdened with the emotions and stress of others. It's important to ensure you take care of those folks. Cassibry learned from his father (Army Chaplain) that you don't have be a jerk to be a good Leader. If your People are not able to approach you, then how can you help them solve their problems. In war and in peacetime, being “Loyal Down” is the sign of trust. When a Leader honors their responsibilities and has the best interest of their Team front of mind, your Team reciprocates. Despite the harsh and unforgiving nature of war, it can be a great teacher and one that reminds us that the art of human nature will always supersede the science.
