In Genesis 22:1-19, and particularly verses 15-19, we see the confirmation of the climactic promise made to Abraham: the blessing of the nations. Here at the end of the Abrahamic narrative, at the climactic point of the climactic narrative we are told that the nations will be blessed, but with one new addition: it will be in Abraham's singular seed that this will happen. This singular seed is Christ, the Savior of the world, in whom all the nations of the earth are blessed.

This episode also considers the complex interplay between truth, peace, and compromise, offering insights into the ongoing disputes over the land of Israel and the broader implications for spiritual consciousness and readiness.Reflect on the enduring legacy of these biblical events and their spiritual significance for the Jewish people. The symbolism of the ram and its horn, tied to the shofar and the anticipation of the Messiah, invites us to ponder the profound connections between past and future. In Genesis 22:1-19 God tests Abraham by telling him to sacrifice his own son as a burnt offering. When the Angel of the LORD stops Abraham at the last moment, the story does not end. Abraham then sees a ram caught in a thicket and recognizes that God has provided a substitute for his son. The ram as a substitute for Isaac provides a fundamental principle for atonement, namely, that it is substitutionary. This is the same thing that we see with the fulfillment of that to which the binding of Isaac points: the death of Christ.
In Genesis 22:1-19 we come to the great climax of the Abrahamic narrative. God tests Abraham by telling him to sacrifice the child of promise. How does Abraham respond? In faith. Abraham's faith entails obedience of the most difficult kind, but Abraham's faith also entails hope in the resurrection. This is because all the promises of God for Abraham are related to Isaac. Therefore, Isaac must die because he is required for sacrifice, but he must live because of the promises. How do these things go together? The resurrection from the dead.

Sodom and Gomorrah is one of the Bible's most infamous stories, but was its destruction really about homosexuality? What does the Bible actually say about the sin of Sodom? And why did Abraham nearly sacrifice Isaac—was child sacrifice common in his time? Plus, what's the real meaning behind Lot's wife turning into a pillar of salt? We unpack these troubling Genesis stories, explore their ancient context, and reveal how Jewish interpreters wrestled with them for centuries. Thoughts, questions, stories? We kick things off talmbout marketing strategies and early reader feedback on JDO's upcoming cybergore novel Gods Fare No Better. Also: why controversy is good for sales (but only if it's not fabricated), Brandon Sanderson's "rotating crops" approach to juggling creative projects, what makes Alex Perez so annoying, and are the RFK onesies worth the price tag? We share our predictions on how the drop of Kelby's gangster neo-western Texas Tea will go, JDO explains what's inside Korean fish candy, we murder the egos of writers with prestigious publishing ambitions, and then we dive into The Binding of Isaac and what storytelling lessons can be learned from this game. In Genesis 22 Abraham is called upon by God to sacrifice his son Isaac on Mount Moriah. This, of course prefigures the Crucifixion in nearly every detail. In addition it says something profound about the relationship between children and their father. Contrary to every other society at the time, fathers do not own their children. (Inspired by Rabbi Sacks, "The Binding of Isaac" on Aish.com)
Rabbi Amy Bernstein's weekly Torah study class at K.I. and via Zoom - Bereshit/Genesis 22:1 - November 15, 2024.
This week, in their liturgical recitation and study of the Hebrew Bible, Jewish communities all over the world will relive the terrifying moment when God commands Abraham to take his son, his beloved son, who was to be his heir and fulfill his deepest dreams for family transmission and ancestry, Isaac, and sacrifice him. What is this passage all about? What does it mean? What can be learned about Abraham, about Isaac, or about God by reading it carefully? Joining Mosaic's editor Jonathan Silver to discuss these questions on this week's podcast (originally broadcast in 2023) is Jon D. Levenson, a professor of Jewish studies at Harvard Divinity School and frequent Mosaic contributor. Levenson has written about this episode in several books, including The Death and Resurrection of the Beloved Son published in 1993 by Yale University Press, and also in Inheriting Abraham, published in 2012 by Princeton University Press. Akeidat Yitzḥak, the binding of Isaac, as the Jewish people traditionally refer to this episode, has a long afterlife in Christian and Muslim traditions; it is also a centerpiece of philosophical reflection among modern thinkers like Immanuel Kant and Soren Kierkegaard. Reading the text now in the aftermath of those later reflections, it's difficult to retrieve its original meaning. The temptation is overwhelming to propose moral justifications for Abraham and for God, to excuse or at least to try to soften the drama of Genesis 22. To hear what the text of the Hebrew Bible really might have to say in response to that temptation requires undoing some modern assumptions—a task that Levenson and Silver take up.

This episode discusses how the story of "The Binding of Isaac" in the Old Testament proves that God would never sacrifice his son. The conversation explores the Christian view of "The Binding of Isaac" as a foreshadowing of the crucifixion of Christ. The episode mentions John 3:16, which states that God gave his one and only son as a sacrifice for eternal life. It highlights the parallel between Abraham being the father of all Israel and God being the father of Jesus in Christianity. The episode touches on the concept of love, stating that both Isaac and Jesus are loved by their fathers.

On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast, Hank answers the following questions:Why did God ask Abraham to sacrifice Isaac in Genesis 22? It seems to go against everything we know about God in the Bible. (0:50)How do we know if our prayers were answered by God or if it happened naturally? (6:20)How can God condemn people to hell for eternity since we only sin for a short lifetime? (15:10)If Jesus is God, why don't we see Him seated on the throne, but only at the right hand of God? Didn't He pray to the Father in the Garden of Gethsemane? (22:42)

The Binding Of Isaac, Pt. 1, Genesis 22-1-19
On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast (10/17/23), Hank answers the following questions:Why did God ask Abraham to sacrifice Isaac in Genesis 22? It seems to go against everything we know about God in the Bible. (0:48)How do we know if our prayers were answered by God or if it happened naturally? (6:20)Is engaging in oral sex the same as committing sodomy? (15:39)Did Jephthah sacrifice his daughter or not? Does God expect us to keep promises like this? (18:28)Have you heard of Michael Rood and his message of restoring the Hebrew roots of the Christian faith and to rebuke those who eat pork and celebrate Christmas? (22:15)
Later this week is Rosh Hashanah, when Jewish communities celebrate the creation of the world and, as part of this celebration, study chapter 22 of Genesis. This contains the famous story in which God asks Abraham to take his son Isaac to a mountain and offer him there as a sacrifice. What is this passage all about? What does it mean? What can be learned about Abraham, about Isaac, or about God by reading it carefully? Joining Mosaic editor Jonathan Silver today to discuss these questions is Jon D. Levenson, a professor of Jewish studies at Harvard Divinity School and frequent Mosaic writer. Levenson has written about this episode in several books, including The Death and Resurrection of the Beloved Son published in 1993 by Yale University Press, and also in Inheriting Abraham, published in 2012 by Princeton University Press. Akeidat Yitzhak, the binding of Isaac, as the Jewish people traditionally refer to this episode, has a long afterlife in Christian and Muslim traditions; it is also a centerpiece of philosophical reflection among modern thinkers like Immanuel Kant and Soren Kierkegaard. Reading the text now in the aftermath of those later reflections, it's difficult to retrieve its original meaning. The temptation is overwhelming to propose moral justifications for Abraham and for God, to excuse or at least try to soften the drama of Genesis 22. To really hear what the text of the Hebrew Bible might have to say in response to that temptation requires undoing some modern assumptions—a task that Levenson and Silver take up. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.
We feel like fighting, but we want others to do it for us. So we're pitting 16 random characters chosen by Dale and Xando into a single elimination tournament to see who would win in a fight at their most powerful state. It's a wild ride, and expect more logic than usual. Who will come out on top? Probably the person who could fly there.
