John Coveyou is the founder of Genius Games and king of dad jokes around the campfire: “Have you heard the one about the sidewalk? It's all over town!” So, it makes sense that he's always had a passion for game design, too. Throughout his military service – during which he discovered his love for science – and while earning a master's degree in engineering, he wondered why there were no games on science concepts like the periodic table, biology of the human body, or the atom. And just like that, Genius Games was born! Genius Games now offers more than 50 games that sell worldwide. Originally, John fielded requests from other English-speaking countries – the UK, Australia, and Canada were early adopters – and soon after, often at US game conferences, he found himself fielding inquiries from international distributors eager to sell into their home countries. John soon discovered that, instead of working with multiple distributors, building relationships with in-country game publishers possessing native fluency of local languages simplified his operations and increased revenues. To support that structure, John built Genius Games as a multi-national rather than global company, allowing for greater autonomy, cultural adaptation, and customized product offerings within each individual country, as opposed to a global company with centralized operations and static processes. For example, the company's publisher in Spain translates game and product information into Spanish, pays for production costs, then sells the games into international markets. Margins are lower, but royalties are consistent and all profit. Listen to the full episode to hear more on the accounting and numbers!. Currently, about 20% of the company's revenue comes from international markets, thanks to the relationships built with overseas publishers visiting the US, and Genius Games are now translated into Spanish, French, Italian, German, Chinese, Hebrew, Polish, Russian, Korean, and other southeast Asian languages. To complement the expansion effort, in 2022 I introduced John to his state's export representative; he ultimately secured a STEP grant covering his attendance at an international trade show. The grant paid for travel, lodging, and conference fees and connected John with exporting help from international groups and additional growth opportunities. For instance, he now understands the importance, and mechanics, of adding translation to his website to drive more sales to his partners. A multilingual website optimizes the experience for people searching for Genius Games – or games in general – by recognizing their native language. The strategy increases the company's reach – consumers will more often buy from websites in their native language – and linking to partner websites for the sale prevents cannibalizing partner sales. (If you're interested in exporting and want to be connected to your state export rep, reach out to me for an introduction.) Even with such meaningful success in consumer and international sales, John still sees room for growth. Genius Games has yet to tap into the educational market – if you're a potential partner or have any connections or resources to help with access to the educational market, please reach out to John on Linked In. Serial entrepreneur John Coveyou talks with host Jason Shupp about starting, buying, operating and selling businesses. John shares how a chaotic upbringing evolved into mindset changes and his belief that anything is truly possible. We also get granular on the key areas that increase the value of a business.Previous to his life as an entrepreneur, John left home at the age of 16 and hopscotched from home to home, almost dropping out of high school after living out of his car. While still in high-school, John joined the Army at the age of 17 to add some stability and structure to his life. After just over 3 years on active duty as a Military Police officer, John decided to go back to school to finish his education, graduating from Washington University in St. Louis with a Master's Degree in Energy, Environmental, and Chemical Engineering. After working for a few years as a Civil Engineer, he realized that his true passion was entrepreneurship. In 2012, John started building a science-based board game publishing company from the ground up. In 2019 he acquired a competing brand that grew his product line and revenues by 30% overnight. After struggling to find quality bookkeeping and financial professionals that actually understood the real issues faced by small business owners, John became a Certified Quickbooks Proadvisor and started helping dozens of companies clean up their financials, optimize their bookkeeping systems, and understand their financial statements and key metrics. After building out a management team at his businesses by implementing EOS, John decided to look for another business to buy. Being disappointed by the lack of professionalism he saw in the brokerage industry, he decided to partner with a few veteran business brokers to bring the world's largest business brokerage, Transworld Business Advisors, to St. Louis and the surrounding region.John is also an active member of the Entrepreneurs Organization and runs the EO Accelerators Program where he coaches a group of entrepreneurs and is the Chair of the Accelerator Board for the St. Louis region.
How do you find your audience for your Kickstarter campaign? It is a fluid thing on how to hone in on your core audience. Always remember it is better to find new products for your current audience rather than attempting to find a new audience for your products or services. This is why it is always a good idea to start small, to use your beginning as a learning experience and an opportunity to get feedback from your early adopters.Building a buyer's persona becomes much easier. Then build more products for that core buyer persona.Much more shared by John and me on how to build your audience.Richard also recommends reading the book "Crossing the Chasm" to help you identify that core audience.
Co-Host John Coveyou and Guest Marc Specter join Host Richard Bliss to discuss the challenges of non-traditional board games on KickstarterJohn Coveyou, with Genius Games, has launched more than a dozen Kickstarter projects, yet his current campaign, Nerd Words, made some mid-campaign adjustments due to the difficulty of convey the game's experience into a Kickstarter campaign. While the project has funded, it has not met the bar set by many of John's spectacularly successful hard-science games that have come before.Marc Specter, with Grand Gamers Guild, has launched Endangered, a game that tackles the many challenges facing today's eco-systems. This is a significant divergence from Marc's previous successful Kickstarter campaigns and shares strong similarities in the challenges from John's campaign.Together, John and Marc, discuss how to address the gamers market with group games and educational games without having them carry the negative labels of failed efforts by other projects in this area. Both are knowledgeable and well-informed.
John Coveyou of Genius Games joins Kathleen Mercury to talk about his games, how he designs them, and how teachers and libraries can use them in the classroom. Host Richard Bliss and Co-Host John Coveyou are joined by Michael Mindes from Tasty Minstrel Games. Michael had just launched and cancelled a Kickstarter campaign because he knew he had done something wrong. Within two hours of launching the Kickstarter campaign, Michael knew they had missed on the offer and needed to take immediate action. Within three days, Michael was close to his funding goal, but knew they needed to pull the plug. If they had crossed the funding goal, he would have felt morally committed to follow through. He refers to it as a micro-failure. What Michael saw as valuable was not recognized as something people were willing to pay for. This episode Michael walks through the mistakes made and what they are doing to fix them for the next campaign.

Host Richard Bliss and Co-Host John Coveyou discuss five attributes of a great product on Kickstarter.People want to buy the product. While this seems obvious. oftentimes people want a product, but aren't willing to pay for the product. You have to find something that is valuable to your audience.People want to tell others about it. Word of mouth marketing is the best means of attracting fans and backers to your project. You can pay for a crowdfunding promotional company to help you artificially spread the word by paying for placement. But when your backers are excited enough to share their support you are able to grow and attract a wider range of backers than you ever could through paid media.People can't easily get it elsewhere. This may seem counter-intuitive. Table top games, which are the single largest funding category on Kickstarter, can be purchased in a store. But the opportunity to participate on Kickstarter means you will get it sooner (Usually), you will get exclusives (Sometimes) or you are part of the development process and have an emotional investment. (An experience). All of these are hard to get if you are buying the product from Target. It's something tangible and shippable. Selling an emotional experience on Kickstarter can be done, but it is a very rare thing. Instead, focus on creating and shipping a product of some kind that can be held in the hands and used. Today, there is a lot of support for how to approach manufacturers and shipping specialists to get your products produced and delivered around the world. The audience is on Kickstarter. While Kickstarter and crowdfunding is common for you and I, it is still something very new to a large portion of the population. If you are going to launch a product, you need to determine if your target audience uses crowdfunding and Kickstarter. If they don't, you have to educate them first about what is Crowdfunding, then you have to convince them to back your project and give you money. Something they probably aren't comfortable with. John does a great job of highlighting these five attributes and how to build a great product for Kickstarter.
Host Richard Bliss is joined by co-host, John Coveyou, to discuss 4 unexpected benefits from Kickstarter. 1. Gauge demand before you manufacture.2. Improve your product based on customer feedback.3. Ship products with maximal efficiency.4. Tap into an audience you wouldn't be able to reach otherwise.

Just because you've had tremendous success on Kickstarter does not mean it is time to quit your day job. Especially if you want to run a board game publishing company. John Coveyou, of Genius Games, has raised $500,000 on Kickstarter, quit his day job, and discovered that cash flow is king and you can quickly get to the brink of financial ruin, even when you do everything right. He shares his story of success as he went from engineer to board game publisher.
John has raised more than $500,000 for his games on Kickstarter. They are hard core science games. He teaches a crowdfunding course and game designer course at Webster University in St Louis. Genius Games has found their niche, and now expands into children science books, raising more than $100,000 on Kickstarter on a product that many of us would find hard to believe there is that much interest. John explains how finding your niche can bring lasting success to Kickstarter
In this episode, I discuss what makes a great game with Genius Games' John Coveyou. We also touch on the lack of good educational games on the market and other topics related to starting an indie board game company.
