Board Boys are back to play a Robin Hood game, but it's not your father's Robin Hood, or so they say. Warning, A Gest of Robin Hood is gritty and dark and real and raw, if you have an excellent imagination. If you don't, (like Cam), it's basically carriage pushin: the game. 0:00 Intro, E.V.A. - Jean Jacques Perrey 2:30 Spaceballs and Game Show talk 16:30 Anachrony 21:45 Money! 26:00 A Beaument with Mo 36:15 A Gest of Robin Hood: Overview 40:30 Spaceballs Main Theme - John Morris 41:30 A Gest of Robin Hood: Review 59:00 A Gest of Robin Hood: Verdict 1:03:00 Board Boys Bump: Ezra and Nehemiah 1:07:15 Thank You, Patrons 1:07:45 Yoda - "Weird Al" Yankovic
Hey hey BATT Family! Thanks for coming on back for the next full episode of the show! We apologize for the extra week on the release of this episode. There has been a lot of personal stuff going on with all three of us over here. That said we're trying out a new editor! So hopefully episode 23 will sound amazing and not have to have been done by Mark! This week's episode though we get to introduce a brand new segment, the Mechanics Shop, where we're going to be doing deep dives into a specific mechanism each time we do it. The goal is to look at that mechanism from a variety of different gameplay angles through the lens of a variety of different games. We are going to be skipping doing a rotating segment when we do these though since the segment will be longer than usual. Like normal, hit us up with any thoughts or comments you may have especially on if you like the new content or not! --- This episode's segments: 00:00:00 - Intro 00:02:03 - What's Been on the Table 00:09:26 - The Mechanics Shop: Worker Placement 00:43:32 - Why Did I Play That: Kronologic: Paris 1920 00:57:44 - Table / Shelf / Trade 01:23:29 - Contact Info / Sponsors 01:25:00 - Outro --- Notes! 1) This one was a beast to edit. Mark had to do a lot more splicing and rearranging than in any episode prior. Pretty sure that he managed to make it all as seamless as he could but thanks for the patience for the extra time while this episode came out! 2) We never really defined what a "worker" is in a worker placement game. For simplicity sake, a worker is a piece of some kind (a token, a miniature, a die, whatever) that you are going to place somewhere on the board and take the action granted by that space. It's not an overwhelming concept, but it isn't always just a meeple or whatever. 3) And technically there is SOME direct player interaction with the poison and constriction tokens and such, but Mark NEVER uses thoses when they play. Peaceful Ark Nova all day! 4) If you'd like to play games with Mark on BoardGameArena, his handle is: MetroMacWag. He'll happily play Ark Nova or many other things. 5) 6) 7) --- You can email us at boardallthetimegaming@gmail.com. We can be found at www.boardallthetime.com and on Facebook at Board All The Time. Episode 574: Games that use movement points Episode release date is April 2, 2025 Show Notes This week we are doing a one episode discussion of games that use movement points as a movement. What are movement points you ask? Well, movement points regulate how far a player can move their pieces during the game. For example, players are given a specific number of "points" that can be spent to move game pieces. Different spaces or terrains on the game board may cost varying amounts of movement points to enter. Players may receive a set number of movement points each turn that can be spread across multiple pieces. Those points could fluctuate depending on card draws or dice rolls. Sometimes movement points can be part of a larger pool of actions, and movement can be part of or one of those actions. In short, movement points provide a structured way to manage in game movement while adding a tactical element to gameplay. So let's make it a point to move to the game table and discuss some games. Carnegie is definitely a good game, I think it's tough to outcompete some of the newer ones though. It was a popular blip for a sec, then kinda floated down to the lower mid of bgg pack. It's still a good game, solid 7. Maracaibo would also have a choice of action to move your ship a certain distance also for triggering spaces. Not sure if that's totally true movement points, but fairly close The only other ones I can even think of would be troop movement for war games, like War of the Ring/for Arrakis or Axis & Allies. War of the Ring is awesome! Great 2p strategy game. War for Arrakis, same designer, basically the truncated version of War of the Ring in Dune! What's the easiest way for dictator Xi Jinping of China to invade Taiwan? Bribe the President of the United States! Trump's loyalty lies in enriching himself and his family, all thanks to the highest bidder – including China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and others. As China shows more signs of preparing to invade Taiwan, Musk's Twitter is normalizing this very idea. Andrea and Russian mafia expert Olga Lautman discuss this and more, including Trump and Melania's meme coin cash grab, in this week's Gaslit Nation bonus show. We also cover ways to fight back, even if things seem to spiral out of control. Olga Lautman will join the Gaslit Nation Salon on February 10 at 4pm ET! Trump used and discarded the powerful Fred Trump daddy figures who helped him rise to power: infamous lawyer Roy Cohn, whom he abandoned as Cohn was dying of AIDS; Fox News kingmaker Roger Ailes, forced out over sexual harassment allegations; and, possibly, Vladimir Putin. The Russians invested decades of financial and other support into Trump and his family, as Russian mafia expert Olga Lautman explains on this week's Gaslit Nation. But now, with American oligarchs, unlimited money, immunity granted by the illegitimate Supreme Court, pardon power, and a mainstream media eager to please, Trump has everything Putin could only dream of. What we saw during that grim inauguration weekend, followed by a flood of dangerous executive orders, shows that Trump, as promised, intends to be a dictator from day one. Tech giants, who had a front-row seat to his inauguration, give Trump a social media disinformation machine rivaling the Kremlin's. We're in for dark times, but there's hope. Our traitorous enemies and oligarchs are, in the end, incredibly stupid, and they'll ultimately destroy each other. This week's bonus show, available to supporters at the Truth-teller ($5/month) level and higher, continues the conversation. We'll discuss Trump and Melania's meme coin pump-and-dump scheme that fleeced their own supporters, how Trump is paving the way for Chinese dominance and Xi's long-sought invasion of Taiwan, and ways to fight back, no matter how deliberately chaotic things get. Remember to protect your sleep during this time and check out the helpful reminder on developing good sleep hygiene in the show notes. They want us overwhelmed and scared, but we must stay sharp and fit. Commit to mindful and healthy practices, including unplugging when needed. By staying strong, we can help carry each other through what lies ahead. No matter how dark things get, we'll get through it together! Afterall, Trump is America, a nation built on the largest Native American mass grave and the genocide of slavery. Trump has always been here. We will fight our way through to another chapter of hard-won progress for future generations to look back on in horror. Olga Lautman will join the Gaslit Nation Salon on February 10 at 4pm ET! And don't forget our Gaslit Nation Game Night on Friday February 7th at 8:30pm ET–we're playing Codenames! For game night, be sure to make an account on BoardGameArena.com. Welcome to the afterparty. We're gaming 'till we drop. Which might be pretty soon tbh because it turns out we're not as young as we once were. Alba articulates why we're still up gaming when all sensible souls have retired for the evening. Kenan's in charge of the quiz show this week which proves to be as bad an idea as it was last time. We explore the etymology of "meta" and Kenan recaps recent travels. Then we discuss games that keep us up when we're powering down, including Friday, Paleo, Hadrian's Wall, Lost Expedition, Eila and Something Shiny, Aqua, Cascadia, Meadow, Calico, Beacon Patrol, 8-bit difficulty, the Dylan of game design, modeling food chains, fast set-up, tactility, escalating challenges, and the limits of one's appetite for complexity. You tell us which games traipse across your tabletops in the wee hours, including Codenames Duet, The Seventh Citadel, Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion, Black Sonata, Akropolis, Nemesis: Lockdown, Next Station London, Unlock, Board Game Arena, and whatever Marvel Snap is. Finally, we congratulate ourselves for solving all the problems and challenge our listeners to be cool like us. Music by Alba and the Mighty Lions and Kenan. Sleep tight. Hosted on Acast. Let's talk about Board Game Arena. It's not the only way to play board games online, but for us, it's probably the most valuable. Why? The post Episode 379 – 5 Board Game Arena Favorites appeared first on The Family Gamers.
Opener: Wayfarers of the South Tigris David Arnott @Arnott Mike Mayer @Mike Mayer If you're like me, you've been supplementing your in-person boardgaming with the ability to play online. I've been doing that for over 20 years, way before the covid pandemic struck. However, that worldwide event opened up the joys of online boardgaming to many more gamers, especially as they worked to keep connections going with friends they couldn't see across the table for many months. Add in the explosion of titles and popularity of BoardgameArena, coupled with the widespread use of Discord, Zoom, or other voice/video communication tools, and gamers today have more ability to stay in touch than ever before. My two guests have taken that, stuck with it, and done more than I've ever managed to do with all of my online play: make a regular game group out of it. Three years on, no longer with the pandemic as the reason, Dave and Mike continue to get together almost every week to play games together. One's in California, the other in Virginia, but they meet more regularly than most in-person game groups. Sometimes they widen the circle to include some other friends like me, but primarily this is a 2-person game group, another interesting aspect. Like me, these guys have been around a long time, have favorites going back decades, yet in this online group they're really espousing the Cult of the New. Why is that? Why are they always learning new games, why do they enjoy online roll & writes so much, and what the heck is Tulpenfieber?! Listen and find out. Closer: The sort of old school games I don't like -Mark
