Bulldog baseball is in town for a SEC weekend and hosting Alabama in a series which both clubs need to win. Mississippi State is looking to at least square the SEC record and maybe more. Bulldog batters have been flashing fresh power in the last two weeks and are third in SEC home runs. Maybe as importantly the Dogs are hitting doubles and driving in runs that were missing for weeks. A batting order is taking clearer shape with Jess Davis leading off ahead of Kamren James, setting up middle-men for RBI opportunities. Pitching struggled with ERA at Georgia and the same three starters must limit early damage while the offense hopefully builds margin for a still-shaky bullpen. On the football field Leach's immediate spring priorities are improving a secondary that struggled last fall, particularly at safety; and rebuilding the blocking. If a pair of still-developing tackles can take care of their ends the offensive line can inspire some confidence. All jobs are officially open, even quarterback where two-year starter Will Rogers will get pushed by redshirts Sawyer Robertson and Daniel Greek.
Host Al Ross talks with Alma, Wi. musician Mac Cherry about his new release collaboration with Brad Steine, "The Way Out." This episode talks about Vell's lack of interest for intimacy with another man's woman. The Good Read for this episode is The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren. Single mom Jess Davis is a data and statistics wizard, but no amount of number crunching can convince her to step back into the dating world. Raised by her grandparents—who now help raise her seven-year-old daughter, Juno—Jess has been left behind too often to feel comfortable letting anyone in. After all, her father's never been around, her hard-partying mother disappeared when she was six, and her ex decided he wasn't “father material” before Juno was even born. Jess holds her loved ones close, but working constantly to stay afloat is hard...and lonely. What's popping in Vell's World consist of Michael K. Williams found dead in New York apartment, Tupac BMW goes for sale, Tom Brady and the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Dallas Cowboys, and more. Folk Rebellion founder Jess Davis and I reconnected after she emerged from a year-long hermitage away from the impossible pace of her work building a ‘hustle-free movement.' A stress-induced heart condition, which caused her to collapse in an airport between speaking engagements, was telling her that enough was enough. Jess' Folk Rebellion is an expression of the very problems that her hustle-induced illness caused: that the way we relate to technology right now is not serving us at all. Exactly one year ago, Jess wrote: “The zeitgeist is here. People are waking up. Thought leaders are joining the conversation. Brands are hopping on the moment. Tech companies are starting to acknowledge the humans in their users. Seth Godin says it's a digital swirl with an enormous cognitive load we haven't figured out yetVitamin Water is giving $100,000 to anyone who cannot touch a smartphone in 2019 - and prove it with a lie detector...lululemon updated their messaging on their bag and now includes digital well-being. This was all I wanted. An awakening. A Rebellion. And yet. We aren't anywhere where we need to be. We are digitally overwhelmed. The internet has turned everyone into a product for selling. Talking heads everywhere hawking their goods and services and expertise. Us included. I can't help but think we are a part of the problem. That maybe abstinence is the only way.” And then she disappeared from the Internet. Until now. In this episode, we discuss: Where Jess went and whyThe next move for Folk RebellionHow hustle culture is literally killing usHow a health breakdown and a digital detox made Jess realize the destructive effects of her relationship to technologyHow to negotiate the desire for opportunity and the ability to create change with the hidden costs and distortion of the messages we seek to bring to the world GO DEEPER Sign up + join the JOMO community at experiencejomo.com for gentle humor, powerful insights, and actionable tools to live joyfully in a digital age. Jess Davis is a mathematics teacher and advisor of the Black Pride Organization at South Saint Paul Secondary School. In being named 2019 Minnesota’s Teacher of the Year, she was described as an educator who is “modeling for students that equity needs to be deliberate and intentional.” Jess possesses an educational philosophy deeply rooted in student agency. She believes student voice is an essential cornerstone often missing in the revolution of our educational system. She holds a Bachelors of Science in Human Biology from Minnesota State University Mankato, and a mathematics teaching license and Master’s in Teaching from Hamline University.
In a world that is so wired, how does someone disconnect long enough to think up a platform for a more unplugged, conscious society? For Jess Davis, the founder of Folk Rebellion, the idea sparked during a vacation – and grew into a movement where she promotes slower-living and the more mindful use of technology (which we could all use these days). Postcards for People Who Love Postcards. That's the tagline of Jess Davis's new online postcard store, The Snail's Mail. And in this show, it’s proof -- once again -- of the idea that postcards connect people. I connected with Jess in Episode 51, where we talked about the imminent launch of her online postcard store. Well…that moment came…and so as I mentioned on that initial show, I invited Jess back to talk about how the launch has gone and how she sees the postcard business in the near future. But even before Episode 51, I connected to Jess last August through Postcards from the Edge, when I interviewed Kitty on Episodes 28 and 29. It’s all a big network of postcard enthusiasts, and I was fascinated to connect with someone all the way in New Zealand. And I continue my fascination. Here we are in 2019…and Jess decided to spin up an online store to sell postcards. And that, my friends, gives me hope for postcards. The connections we make through postcards last…and the art on them can last a long time. You know, part of the connection with postcards is that we get to know people. And if they have pets, we get to know them, too. This conversation starts in the middle of something I love about her Instagram site…photos of her Black Lab – Betty. I commented about how much I liked a picture she posted of Betty wearing a flower garland.

The Slow book tour rolls on this week, and in this poggie Brooke sits down to chat with her irrerepressible and inspiring mate Jess Davis - a Brooklyn-dwelling tech ethicist, slow living advocate and founder of Folk Rebellion. This episode was recorded at Greenlight Bookstore in Brooklyn in August, and during the conversation and Q&A session Brooke and Jess talk through the meaning of slow in a fast-paced city like Brooklyn. Jess shares some of what inspired her to change from living a constantly connected, burnt out, stress-filled life to now helming an organisation who's main goal is to get people off their screens and out in to life, as well as how she manages her life in both a real and practical sense. They’re happy, they’re delighted, they’re back. This week Brooke chats with the founder of Folk Rebellion, AKA Chief Rebel Jess Davis. Jess is an unapologetic advocate for getting the hell off our devices and getting into life. This episode follows on nicely from the recent Monday series about social media and is a continuation of the theme of the relationship between technology and distraction. Folk Rebellion is a call to arms for all of us to get off our phones, look people in the eye when we talk to them and live an analog life; do things with our hands, go hiking, start making, listen to a whole album on vinyl. While working as a digital brand strategist, Jess started to realise the impact her tech dependent life was having on her brain. She found herself losing focus, struggling with memory and feeling disassociated, and went to see doctors about these issues. After a tech intervention by her husband on a holiday to Hawaii, she felt a shift. Eight days of no technology meant she started to feel like her old self again, and this triggered a series of massive shifts and changes Jess has since made to her life. In this episode, Brooke chats with Jess about about how to get people on board with changes, thoughts on digital detox, insight into Jess’ daily routine with technology, changing expectations around technology and availability as well as slow living in the city. There’s also talk of an exciting new Folk Rebellion project; the launch of an IRL, old-school, paper newspaper called Rebel Times. Delivered to your door, featuring long form pieces and a throwback to the funny pages, this monthly publication is coming out in January 2018. Check out @folkrebellion on Instagram or go to folkrebellion.com to stay posted or find out how to get involved. On this episode of the Sustainable Dish Podcast I speak to Jess Davis of Folk Rebellion about disconnecting from technology, digital wellness and the resurgence of old fashioned hobbies.
If you think you’ve heard it all when it comes to doing real estate investing virtually, then you’ve never heard about Josh and Jess Davis. This couple live in Uganda, Africa, and they’re flipping houses in the U.S. to fund their missionary endeavors. What a powerful story they have. And you hear all about it in this episode. Josh and Jess talk about a deal where the buyer was in Guatemala, Central America, while they were in Africa, and the property was in the U.S. That’s a good, nope – great example of virtual wholesaling. Married for about seven years, Jess and Josh have two children, and Jess homeschools both of them. It’s a real balancing act to carry out their missionary work, teach the children and work on their real estate business at the same time. They concentrate on 3 U.S. markets and are averaging about 3-4 deals per month. Their business model is having active bird dogs working for them, as well as maintaining partnerships. (They are now in 6 markets, since the podcast was recorded!) While partnering together is fairly recent, Josh has been active in the real estate world for over 12 years. In that time, he’s built up a strong buyers list, which serves them well right now. They’ve been particularly active since the recent devastating floods in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area. It’s always their goal to invest into the areas that they love the most, and the Gulf Coast fits that description. It’s their desire to help other people fulfill their dreams and visions by using virtual real estate investing to do it. So hear how they do it right here!
