Even when guest Andrew Friedman didn't have much experience with something, but thought it would be a fun challenge to try, he would go after it. For example, having never played football in his life, he walked onto the college team. Having taken only a couple computer science classes, he started building websites for area business while still in college. In hindsight, trying to get a job in a growing internet company such as Amazon or Yahoo would have fit his self-taught skills and passions. Instead, he found himself at what he considered a traditional job consulting for PriceWaterhouse. After a couple of years, though,  he learned of an opportunity to make games for the internet. Lack of actual qualifications didn't deter him and it seemed like it could lead to something fun. Starting in the industry by building the games and doing the actual engineering, he later evolved with the evolution of the industry, working in product development and product management, as well as business strategy and operations. He's worked inside small start-ups, bigger start-ups and even established his own small company—twice. In this episode, find out from Andrew how looking for the challenge and being willing to figure things out can sometimes help you level up...on today's Roads Taken with me, Leslie Jennings Rowley. About This Episode's GuestAndrew Friedman Andrew Friedman, who has spent over two decades in the online gaming industry, having had a hand in every aspect from engineering, product development, and product management to business strategy and operations. A presentation by Kagonya Awori about her PHD research about Educational Games, the use of 360 video and AI in learning and more, followed by a talk with Sam Hopkins. Kagonya Awori proposes a lens for game design that is based on indigenous African ways of knowing. Based on a study with elders in Kenya and diaspora youth in Australia, this talk proposes a lens that can motivate the design of games that can better mediate learning for African communities. The People-Place-Praxis lens is based on the view that knowledge is developed, shared and stored over time through situated face-to-face interactions with people and indigenous epicentres. The P-P-P lens views People as knowledge, Place as knowledge and Praxis as knowledge. This triad view of knowledge asserts that immersive learning involves supporting social, situated and physical interactions among members, and in close association with indigenous epicentres. DR. KAGONYA AWORI is a Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) researcher. She has over 10 years experience in User Experience Research and Design having worked across the globe in countries including Kenya, United Kingdom, and Australia, with companies such as iHub Kenya, Microsoft Research, National Australia Bank and Safaricom PLC. She holds a dual Masters in Human-Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University (USA), a Bachelors in Business Information Technology from Strathmore University (Kenya), and a PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of Melbourne, (Australia)

Learning Machine: The Uncertain Future of Education

Do you consider yourself a Math person? Most people don't, and unfortunately the statistics back this up. Just 24% of high school 12th graders scored at or above proficient on the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Karin Wu and her team at the MIND Research Institute believe that expertly designed educational games can help shift Math from frustrating to fun. STMath, the game developed by her team, is based on cutting-edge neuroscience and education research. In this episode, we discussed the potential impact of games like STMath and the power of preparing students for the unknown future they will face. You can follow Karin Wu on Twitter @KarinCWu and read more about the MIND Research Institute at www.mindresearch.org.Support Learning Machine PodcastSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/LearningMachine)

New AI Model Can Predict Student Performance Using Educational Games

An artificial intelligence (AI) model can now better determine the degree of students' learning using educational games. Researchers from North Carolina State University created a model that can project student achievement on a test based on students' previous experience with learning tools like educational games. The researchers tested the effectiveness of their model by analyzing student behavior while student participants played an educational game called Crystal Island.  In the game, participants act as medical agents engaging in different tasks to investigate a disease outbreak on an island. Before and after playing the game, the participants took a survey and a 17-item test. According to one of the researchers, the team wanted the AI model to be capable of predicting whether or not students would answer each item on the test correctly just by analyzing how they played Crystal Island. Using data from 181 students, the AI identified similar game-playing behaviors among students who answered each test item correctly and among those who answered erroneously. The model then used this data to predict how a new student would answer the same test item. According to the researchers, this AI model was about 10% more accurate in predicting student performance than other AI models. The researchers believe their model can be used to improve teaching and learning results. For instance, the model can alert teachers if students need supplementary lessons. Another researcher said the AI model can open the door to more sophisticated educational programs that can adjust to students' needs.

The organization Games for Change is hard to describe as being just one thing: they throw a Festival that happens every year in NYC, and that's been the backbone of the organization, but around that has grown a really important community of artists and activists, educators, computer scientists, developers, funders, and game studios who believe deeply in the power of games for improving the human experience. Sometimes that's about empathy for other humans, sometimes it's about zooming in on something remarkable, sometimes it's about simply tapping the playfulness in all of us. When I think of Games for Change - some might call them Serious Games - I think of titles like Dys4ia, a flashgame by the legendary Anna Anthropy - quoting from Wikipedia, "to recount her experiences of gender dysphoria and hormone replacement therapy". There are hundreds of titles, and many would argue that the boundaries between "serious games" and others is really about your game design practice, more than genre. They can be blurry, when you put them up against Educational Games, or even virtual environments where the outcomes aren't purely a play for revenue.I've been really lucky to be a part of this organization's evolution as a participant at the festival, as a partner to their student game design challenge in my role at Mouse, and as a member of the community that gains so much from the vision they put forward 15 years ago. I feel like an Anniversary gift is in order, and while I didn't send chocolates to founders - Ben Stokes, Barry Joseph, Suzanne Seggerman - it felt like the next best thing to spend some time with G4C President, Susanna Pollack, and give you a chance to hear from two winners at this year's festival.3 Conversations, 15 years of Games for Change - enjoy.Notes from this episode:Games For Change: http://www.gamesforchange.org/Attentat 1942: http://attentat1942.com/Attentat 1942 Gameplay: https://youtu.be/kLct7kVW1sMCharles University: https://cuni.cz/About Assassins Creed, Origins for Education: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/16/arts/assassins-creed-origins-education.htmlSTEAM: https://store.steampowered.com/Technology Student Association: http://www.tsaweb.org/Play Garrett at Chameleon School: http://tsabms.bsd.k12.pa.us/VideoGameDesign/Team903/2018 G4C Student Challenge Winners: http://www.gamesforchange.org/studentchallenge/awards-2018-student-challenge/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Todays guest entrepreneur is creating an amazing lifestyle for himself due to being a content marketing machine. H has been in the business one way or another since way back in the early 2000s. Technology seems to be something that brings him to life, and when you look at his career it has taken him in directions that like everyone who spends time with me to Join Up Dots could not have been perceived at the very beginning. He loves to code and write programs, and this love allowed him to start creating his own IPhone apps. His very first one hitting the number 8 position under Educational Games in iTunes.I 'm not sure if this is good or not, but I am certainly going to find out during the discussion. He has contributed to major publications including Lifehack, Social Media Examiner, iPhoneLife, Unbounce, Kissmetrics, and many more and even now hosts his own podcast focused on guess what mobile apps.So how does he come up with areas of focus for his business? And how does he decide the direction to go into, with so many areas that must make him to want to jump in all directions at once. He describes himself as 60% marketer, 30% developer, 10% designer and 100% hustler. And fortunately for us he isn't very good at maths, as I would sling in 100% conversationalist too.So lets get down to business and start joining up the dots with the one and only, 200%'r…… Mr Steve Young.
