Part 2 of the Beer Packaging segment, I meet up with Nick Becker from Konvoy Kegs to talk about how they help breweries with rental and leasing options for their keg fleet management. Nick was an investor of the famous Harts Pub in the Sydney Rocks area, and then following other Harts Pub owner Mark Fethers to start the Rocks Brewery now over in Alexandria. He then found himself working for Kegstar along with founder and multiple beer entrepreneur Adam Trippe-Smith. Following Kegstar's acquisition by Brambles in 2015, loyalties started to shift with having to adapt to an ever changing corporate structure and culture, and so Nick followed Adam along with other former Kegstar employees Patrick Hanrahan & Marc Eggins to start KONVOY Kegs the new player in the Australian market for Keg Fleet Management. In our chat we discuss the inner workings of how keg rental & leasing works, plus advice around what is the sweet spot for when breweries should start considering this as an option. One of the privileges I had while working in the brewing industry is meeting and working with some fantastic individuals, one of which is Christian Barden from Kegstar. Coming from a background in brewing and hospitality working with companies such as Whitebread, AB InBev and Cott Beverages, along with active involvement in companies such as BrewBroker and Kegstar, Christian is an entrepreneur who is a keen advocate for creating a working culture that aims to get the best out of a team and maintain a healthy, dynamic, honest and open working environment. While this episode touches upon a few beer industry points, such as SBR and alcohol consumption, we mostly center our conversation on leadership skills, personal development and creating the kind of atmosphere and teams where people feel valued, known and rewarded fairly for their contributions. Personal development and betterment is key to hiring people, gracefully letting people move on, building a successful business, motivating people, understanding them, communicating clearly and well; the most successful businesses and organisations I’ve ever been privy to have leaders who embody both humanity - in its most virtuous sense - and draw the best out of people by challenging them. This conversation I had with Christian a few weeks back is a bit different than you may be used to on this podcast; in its simplest form, it’s two mates discussing a topic we’re both passionate about… but if you allow yourself to really think through what you’re hearing - to look at our own behaviors and mentality and take note - I think together we can build a better, brighter industry for everyone involved. You might not be into ‘all that “management crap”’ but if bettering yourself and building a healthy and dynamic team doesn’t have anything to do with brewing or being involved in a beer business, I genuinely don’t know what does! --- This week’s show is sponsored by SSV Limited From tanks to full brewhouses SSV Limited have got you covered. We kick off our tenth year of covering the Australian brewing industry through a podcast with Adam Trippe Smith. Adam joined the brewing industry after a background in corporate finance, corporate development and M&A with Ernst & Young, Diageo and APN News & Media. In 2007 he co-founded McLaren Vale Brewing Company, and after leaving went on to found Australia’s first keg lease company Kegstar in 2012. After growing that business he oversaw a staged sale to supply-chain logistics company Brambles before leaving Kegstar in 2018. After a break, he recently re-entered the brewing industry founding Konvoy Kegs, a keg rental business that competes with his former creation, while at the same time - together with some illustrious co-founders - he is soon to officially launch another brewery, White Bay Beer Company in Sydney. Through all of this, Adam was heavily involved in establishing what is now the Independent Brewers Association. This is a great episode that is rich in industry insight and advice for those involved in the entrepreneurial side of the brewing industry as befits a conversation with one of the most prolific brewing entrepreneurs in the country. Thanks to Bintani we were able to take Radio Brews News to BrewCon and capture a little of what was on offer to those who were lucky enough to get to Australian craft brewing's annual conference and trade show. In this episode we chat with Kegstar's Kevin Dinn and Andrew Higginbotham. There has been a lot of talk about smart kegs over the last few years - kegs that are able to report back to base about where they are, their temperature, and even whether they are full or empty. Despite all of that talk, nothing has yet hit the market. But with Kegstar announcing it is ready to roll out scan free keg tracking, we use this opportunity to catch up with Kegstar's Chief Technology Officer and learn about what they're doing and what's possible, and what's likely in the smart keg space. While we're chatting with Kegstar, we also catch up with General Manager Andrew Higginbotham to update the chat we had with him at GABS earlier this year about demand for smaller kegs post 1 July. If you're in the business of moving beer, this is an interesting conversation about what's new in the keg space. BrewCon 2020 will take place on September 21 and 22 next year. Enjoy the conversation. During the recent Sydney Beer Week the Independent Brewers Association hosted a discussion panel looking at labelling guidelines to assist brewers with negotiating the mandatory requirements and also what they need to be aware of regarding the ABAC code and also retailer requirements. In addition to Independent Brewers Association chief executive officer, Alexis Roitman, the session featured a great panel of Radio Brews News regulars including Diarmaid O'Mordha Group Quality & Sustainability Manager at Endeavour Drinks Group, Zoe Ottaway from Totem Marketing and Steve Henderson from Rockstar Brewer. During the recent Sydney Beer Week we were fortunate to work with Kegstar to present this discussion panel looking at the future of beer festivals and beer events such as the very beer week we were attending. Events such as these were a great route to market for brewers in the early days of craft beer and also provided beer drinkers with a place to try all of the new and novel beers that were coming onto the market. But in the current market of the ever present tap takeover, with keg rotation a staple of craft beer bars and with every state having a craft beer week, and with every postcode seemingly wanting its own festival, has event fatigue set in? Our panel of Danielle Allen and Kerry McBride from Two Birds Brewing, Dave Phillips from Dave's Brewery Tours and Sydney Beer Week and Marty Keetels from Beer InCider take a look at the issue from both sides of the fence. What do brewers look for in a beer festival and what brings them back, and also what beer festivals do for the brewers and the beer drinking public. Enjoy the conversation.

A little over a month ago the Federal Government announced changes to the excise system that will see the excise brewers pay on smaller keg formats fall to match that of the traditional 50 litre kegs. This had been lobbied for by small brewers for several years, and was touted to have a range of benefits across things such as workplace health and safety, beer freshness and the range of venues stocking keg beer. Given how long brewers had been lobbying for the change, the response from some brewers was quite surprising, with many expressing a range of concerns about the negative effects the change will have and whether smaller formats would be used at all. This week on Beer is a Conversation Matt Kirkegaard chats with Nick Boots, General Manager Kegstar Australia and New Zealand. With the changes 12 months away, Kegstar will be paying very close attention to whether there is already demand for smaller kegs and what uptake might be. Nick speaks about whether he thinks we will see a flood of one-way kegs from overseas, and a range of other keg trends taking place here and overseas in an attempt to divine what impacts the excise changes will have for brewers. Enjoy the conversation.

Adam founded Kegstar in December 2012 and has extensive experience in the beverage industry having also co-founded McLaren Vale Beer Company and being a Founding Director of Australia's Independent Brewers Association. McLaren Vale Beer Company was one of the fastest growing beer companies in Australia during 2009 to 2011 under Adam's leadership. It was during this period, when continually falling short on beer supply due to keg shortages, Adam identified the opportunity for the Kegstar keg-pooling model. Having sold McLaren Vale Beer Company to investors in December 2011, Adam embarked on the project to bring Kegstar to life. Kegstar is an asset pooling business specialising in stainless steel kegs used to transport beverages, principally beer and cider. Under its pooling model, Kegstar owns and manages a growing pool of over 300,000 kegs. Each Kegstar keg is uniquely identified and tracked when the keg moves through the supply chain. Kegstar was sold to global supply-chain logistics company Brambles Limited in December 2015 and currently operates in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Ireland, and launched in the USA in April 2017. As a professional Adam has a background in corporate finance, corporate development and M&A with Ernst & Young, Diageo, easyGroup, Rinker Materials and APN News & Media. As an entrepreneur, Adam was a co-founder of easyCar.com in London in 2000, co-founder of McLaren Vale Beer Company in 2008, co-founder of the Independent Brewers Association in 2011, founder of Kegstar in 2012 and founder of The Balmain Ball in 2014. Adam holds an MBA from Melbourne Business School and in 2011 Adam was an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Finalist. Adam has lived in Adelaide, McLaren Vale, London, Tianjin, and Sydney.
