In Episode 015 of The Crafty Pint Podcast we head overseas for the first time. Our destination is a tiny brewery most people won't have heard of, where we're joined by a guest with whom many will be very familiar. The tiny brewery is Shortjaw Brewing, located in Westport: a town on the sparsely populated west coast of New Zealand's South Island. The guest is the man who, along with his partner Emma, decided to take over the site of a 30-year-old, twice-liquidated brewery during the early period of the COVID pandemic and bring it back to life. Luke Robertson is far better known in beer circles – at least outside Westport and surrounds – from his time in Australia. This is mainly due to Ale of a Time, the blog that spawned a podcast of the same name, both of them home to sharp, witty and occasionally caustic observations of, and commentary on, the wide world of beer. That was just one of many roles in the Australian beer world for Luke, who helped deliver major events such as Good Beer Week and BrewCon for the Independent Brewers Association, while writing – mostly on beer – for high profile publications not just in his adopted home but overseas, notably for Good Beer Hunting. Thirty months on from pouring the first Shortjaw beer for guests, he joined us to reflect on his change of direction – or putting his money where his mouth is, as he puts it: how he's approached building a customer base for a regional brewery in one of the most remote parts of the planet, his fondness for creating beers that represent the place in which they're brewed, and some of the highs and lows that come with launching a brewery in the toughest climate for beer in decades. The chat with Luke starts at 11:05. Prior to that, we interrupt Will's holiday in Bali to go behind the scenes of his deep dive article into the experiences of working at beer's sinking ships. Over a period of months, he spoke to former employees at a number of businesses across Australia that have been through administration, ceased operating, or changed hands over the past couple of years, and the picture they paint is far from pretty. We also discuss the reaction to the article since its publication on Monday, with comments received from outside Australia and beyond the beer world too. A truly mega-episode as we explore some of the highs and lows of what's going on in the Australian craft beer scene right now. Karl from Moon Dog drops past to share the very latest news on what's happening with the brewery's plans to open a new venue in Footscray and of course to tell us about all of the other fun things that Moon Dog is scheming about at the moment. Sam from Hop Nation reflects on Good Beer Week, the launch of the 2023 Kalash and then gives us a preview about what we can expect at this year's Blobfish Sour Beer Festival. And then we have the second part of our live show with Ross from Bacchus Brewing - a really frank and honest discussion about what it's like to be a part in the industry at this point in time. What inspired Ross to make the jump from scrap metal dealer in Libya [no really], to opening a home brew store in 2004 - and from there to start one of Queensland's iconic breweries in 2010. Would he do it all again or would he make a different choice knowing what he knows now - the answer may surprise you. How is the changing economy in 2023 affecting sales of his kinds of beers and just how do you get marshmallow flavour into a smores beer - that answer probably won't surprise you...

Hop Nation Brewing was founded in Footscray, Melbourne in 2014 by winemaking friends Sam Hambour and Duncan Gibson. While their company started out making hoppy beers, Sam and Duncan have continued to expand into new and intriguing territories. They have a side label for sour beers, Site Fermentation Project; and they've returned to winemaking with an affiliated brand, Site Wine.Hop Nation is also one of many craft breweries to have diversified into alcoholic seltzer, with the creation of another new brand, Ray, in 2020.While in Melbourne for Good Beer Week a few weeks ago I dropped by Hop Nation's original site in Footscray for a long overdue interview with Sam.Our catch-up turned out to be well-timed, as Hop Nation dominated proceedings at the Australian International Beer Awards the following night. The company picked up a remarkable four trophies including one of the major awards, Champion Medium Australian Brewery, and Best Pilsner for Rattenhund, which you'll hear me discuss with Sam in this interview. These achievements follow Hop Nation's recent expansion into a new production brewery in Mornington, which has enabled the company to fine tune its beers. So there was plenty to talk about with Sam, and that's without even mentioning the 2021 release of The Kalash, their bourbon barrel aged imperial stout that drops on June 3, around the time this episode goes to air.Same as in 2020, there's a second version of The Kalash coming out this year, which you heard foreshadowed by David Baker of Victoria's Bakery Hill Distillery, back in Season Three of this podcast. And perhaps you can expect even more barrel-aged beers from Hop Nation, which Sam reveals will soon begin distilling whisky, gin and brandy as the latest additions to its impressive beverage portfolio.

I hope those of you who have been able to get to Melbourne have enjoyed the triumphant return of Good Beer Week. We've got a special interview for you today with one of the country's up and coming breweries, that many of you outside the Gold Coast will never have heard of; Madocke. Special thanks to Dylan for conducting this interview in my absence & to Annelies for giving up some of her evening to have a chat. Her story (& husband Jimmy's) from Belgium to one of the most unusual breweries you've seen to a soon to open brewery & taproom in Ashmore is one of the most unique in an industry where stories often seem to be cut from the same cloth. With the opening of their new facility I think people beyond the Gold Coast will soon be hearing a log more about these fantastic people making wonderful beer! In this episode, I chat with well-known figure within the Australian Craft Beer Industry, James Smith, who was the founder of Good Beer Week and online magazine & new resource, The Crafty Pint. Originally from the UK and working for a newspaper over there, James and his wife then moved over to Australia in 2008.  After being introduced to a few people in the brewing industry, he started to realise that there was a few breweries and a small craft beer scene developing in Australia around the time but had very little media coverage on it. In 2010 he then launched Crafty Pint, and only a few months after that Good Beer Week, which was a week long of events related to craft beer. In modern day, crafty pint is an industry leading news publication for the craft beer scene in Oz, and Good Beer Week has grown to be come a National Event being taken over by the Independent Brewers Association. In our chat we discuss the media options available to new and established breweries that they can take advantage of to get their name out there and create a bit of buzz about their beers. Thanks to Kegstar, Brews News was able to be there to record some of these panels and we are proud to present these discussions. This panel, held just hours before the Australian International Beer Awards presentation dinner, was a rare insight into how awards like the AIBAs work, who runs them and how, and what value is gained by both the brewer and the brewer's customers. It's an opportunity to see behind curtain of secrecy that shades the AIBAs from the public eye and shows how the beers are entered, catalogued, stewarded and judged and the process of awarding the medals and trophies. We hear from a range of stakeholders and learn the process behind the judging process. from the Industry Advisory Panel which works with the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria to ensure the awards process is impartial and fair and up-to-date with evolving trends, and from brewers from both very large and very small scale breweries. The discussion moves from the science and art of tasting, through to entry system, the judging process itself and how points are awarded, and champions determined. We then look at the benefits to the brewers who win, the lessons to be learned from those who fail to excite the judges and the extended benefits in terms of marketing and promoting beer that awards provide. The panel consists of: Tina Panoutsous - a legend in the field of Sensory Perception and a member of the Advisory Panel Ian Morgan - Head Brewer at Mountain Goat Samara Fuss - champion Gyspy Brewer and co-founder and owner of Philter Brewing Radio Brews News is proudly presented by Cryer Malt. This week we catch up with Brooklyn Brewery Co-founder Steve Hindy. We last caught up with Steve in June 2015 after he gave the keynote presentation at the then Craft Beer Industry Association's Craft Brewers Conference and I caught up with Steve again during a Good Beer Week in Melbourne In that earlier chat Steve talked about such things including the US's ability to cope with what was then projected brewery growth that would see 5000 breweries operating. Of course, they now have in excess of 7000. He also talked about the challenges Australian craft breweries would have in the face of tap contracts here. Since then, Brooklyn has taken on a 24.5% investment from Kirin and is today distributed in Lion. We talk about the complexities of the international beer market that see a US Brewers Association board member and champion of the Independence logo there have his beer distributed - and brewed under licence - in another market by a company that doesn't carry the same logo here. We discuss that and much much more about Brooklyn, it's beers and the future. Steve is a legend of craft brewing with valuable insights into the industry, and top company. It's a great chat, we hope you enjoy it. You can go back and listen to our earlier chat here and be amazed at what has changed over just four years. This special edition of Radio Brews News features a discussion panel that took place back in May during Good Beer Week called Brewers and Growers. It features an expert panel of guests, including Rupanyup farmer and Grain Producers Australia chairman Andrew Weidemann, Owen Johnston from Hop Products Australia and a great panel of brewers including Grant Wearin from Modus Operandi, Andrew Ong from 2 Brothers, Sean Simons from White Lakes Brewery and Brad Rogers from Stone & Wood. The panel looked at the issues facing both growers supplying the craft beer sector, and the ingredient needs of craft brewers. The panel was chaired by Katherine McLean from the Craft Beer Industry Association. It's a open discussion with plenty of forthright opinions from the panel and especially from the floor. Australian Brews News was honoured to get to present the discussion, and it is a great listen.
