Our guest recently described the EU's action on cohesion – levelling up Europe's diverse regions – as "more than a policy: rather, a guiding principle to strengthen and unite Europe" in an op-ed. Elisa Ferreira has been the EU Commissioner in charge of Cohesion and Reforms since 2019. On Talking Europe, we discuss the outcome of the European elections, and whether new spending priorities – including on defence – could end up competing with cohesion funding needs. Despite her warnings on that, Ferreira remains optimistic. "I trust that we Europeans will be intelligent enough not to fragment Europe in such difficult times," she tells the programme. We also showcase a best-of our cohesion reports over the past year, filmed by Luke Brown and Johan Bodin.

The Rev. Luke Brown, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Ellsworth, Kansas, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Mark 1:21-2:12. This section begins with Jesus' teaching in a synagogue in Capernaum, where his authoritative and powerful teaching amazes the people. During his sermon, he exorcises an unclean spirit from a man, further demonstrating his divine authority. Jesus then heals Simon Peter's mother-in-law, and the news of his miraculous deeds spreads rapidly. In response to the growing crowds seeking his healing and teachings, Jesus moves on to the next town. After he returns, Jesus heals a paralyzed man, telling him his sins are forgiven before miraculously curing his disability, lowered down through a roof by his friends. This riles up the Pharisees who accuse Jesus of blasphemy. Beneath the fast-paced action of Jesus' ministry in the Gospel of Mark lies a profound theological message: we are all in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. Though Jesus performs mighty deeds and calls people to repent, they repeatedly fail to understand his true identity and mission. Even his disciples abandon him in his darkest hour. Yet Jesus willingly suffers and dies on the cross as a ransom for many, accomplishing what we could not do ourselves - securing our justification before God. Mark presents Jesus not just as a miracle worker but as the divine Savior whose atoning sacrifice makes salvation possible for lost sinners.

Motivation, Meaning, and Purpose stand out in the 21st Century as missing from society. On the one hand, this may be the problem our era faces, and on the other, it appears to be timeless. As subjects that draw charlatans like flies, we try to navigate the difficulties of the subject with some delicacy, recognizing pitfalls along the way. If it were only so easy to come to a conclusion on Monday, and be satisfied for the remainder of one's life, we wouldn't be here. Instead, work must be done daily to pursue all three. One method of answering the question of purpose is to look at natural law: what is it that we were created for. A phenomena arises: it may be easier to give the answer to a crowd, than to one's self in the quiet moments in-between. One of the pleasures of engaging with Philosophy, is that it nearly requires one to read the old texts. There's a reason we so often go back to the Greeks, and it's not always that we understand them to be correct. Whether it's the good works that survive history because they are so good, or that the Iliad and the Odyssey provide such an excellent landscape to explore various moral arguments, we find the motivations of one protagonist to illuminate the difference between the why and the how of violence. Luke Brown brings a conversation that moves beyond the disappointment we may face when observing a Gun Culture that is less than what we want it to be, and with an attitude that encourages us all to do better. The Rev. Luke Brown, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Ellsworth, Kansas, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study 1 Samuel 14:47-15:35. God commanded King Saul to destroy the Amalekites and all their possessions as a punishment for their attack on Israel when they left Egypt. Saul obeyed—but only partially. Contrary to God's command, he spared their king Agag and the best of their animals. Samuel confronted Saul for his disobedience and told him that YHWH had rejected him as king. The Book of 1 Samuel beings with the unique birth of Samuel, the last judge of Israel. Soon, the people of Israel begin to press upon the aging prophet Samuel to anoint a king over them like the other nations. YHWH assures Samuel that the people are rejecting their God, not Samuel. He advises Samuel to give the people what they want. What follows is the rise and fall of King Saul, the eventual anointing and coronation of David as king, the forerunner of Jesus. It's a true story of political intrigue and warfare, but it's also more than that. 1 Samuel shows us God working to save his people from their enemies and even from themselves.
Luke Brown is a podcaster, tri-athlete, marathon runner, former college football player, and kettlebell training enthusiast. For the second time on the podcast, Luke joins me in another intentional conversation. We start off by discussing Luke's new podcast, “Anyone Extraordinary” and the purpose behind its creation. Next we talk about functional training with kettlebells, landmines, and mace bells and the positives and negatives it has in comparison to traditional barbell movements. He then details the inspirational story of how his brother battled an array of injuries to eventually playing football at a D1 college. Nothing like an underdog story to make you want to run through a brick wall! Staying on football, we compare our experiences playing together at John Carroll University and the different perspectives we have towards the game. Fear, doubt, trusting your instinct- some of the many important topics we cover in this conversation. One of my brothers who I love sitting down and connecting with, this episode was a perfect way to usher in a new season of Thoughts From a Balcony! The Rev. Luke Brown, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Ellsworth, Kansas, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Hosea 6-7. A beautiful confession by the Israelites is exposed by God as merely superficial. They think the judgment will be minor. They believe that by mere outward confession and rote sacrifice they will be spared. However, through his prophet Hosea, God explains what he is looking for is steadfast love, not sacrifice; true faithfulness not lip service. The book of Hosea is a love story with a twist. It tells how God commanded Hosea, a prophet, to marry Gomer, a wife who would be unfaithful to him. God wanted Hosea to feel firsthand the pain of betrayal as he sent him out to prophesy to the people of Israel how they had been unfaithful to God. Hosea still loved Gomer and pursued her and restored her as his wife. This was a picture of how God pursued Israel despite their sin and rebellion and offered them grace and mercy if they would return to Him.

Guest Luke Brown had a long-standing desire to become a professor. Though both English and physics seemed plausible at one point, he was pulled into the study of history through a classics course. His senior year of college, he thought he had it all figured out: he got engaged to his college girlfriend and he was applying to graduate school. He ended up getting married, but he also got rejected from every history graduate program to which he had applied. He got back on track a year later, but ultimately let go of the PhD he'd thought he'd been destined for.In pulling away from the program and academic life completely, he found himself in an identity crisis. He landed jobs that were enjoyable, but in a different field and not quite what he had in mind for himself. Of course, when he reflects on things—especially his wife of more than 25 years and three children—he recognizes that life isn't all about one's career. In this episode, find out from Luke how adjusting your expectations and giving yourself grace to find a new identity can take a bit of time …on Roads Taken with Leslie Jennings Rowley. About This Episode's GuestLuke Brown continues to hone an eclectic set of interests and currently lends his talents to help organizations use technology to operate more effectively. While he's continuing to figure out who he'll be when he grows up, he is working on putting his three kids on paths of their own. He lives with them and his wife in Minneapolis. Luke Brown is a triathlon athlete, humanitarian, and former college football player at John Carroll University. Luke and I jump into his most recent triathlon and how he learned to properly swim to prepare for his big race. Next we go over his marathon for charity that he completed during the height of Covid. He ran around the city of Pittsburgh to raise money for the local food bank while incorporating people from the community. We get to discuss his service experience at John Carroll and how it helped him gain an appreciation for life. Luke goes over his “8 days of silence” that he took in January of this year and how transformative that was for his relationship with his thoughts, emotions, and the outside world. We talk about life after sports, his plans for post-college life, and the importance of following your heart to operate at a higher frequency in life. Luke is one of the most interesting friends in my life, and it was truly a special experience hearing some of his life stories! Hope y'all enjoy ✌️ Follow Luke on IG: https://www.instagram.com/lukebrown33/

For three days, Luke Brown was in the most severe pain he's ever experienced. He had contracted monkeypox, which is now a global health emergency. He tried everything to help ease the pain, and nothing worked. He eventually found out about a drug called TPOXX, normally used to treat smallpox, that can also be effective against monkeypox symptoms. Brown talks with KYW's Jim Melwert about his experience trying to get ahold of TPOXX in the days before the CDC relaxed the process for obtaining it, what his experience with monkeypox symptoms are like, and his advice for people who are nervous about the disease or think they've been exposed: "Don't panic. Do skin scans. Get in line for a vaccine. And if you think you have this thing, talk to your doctor about TPOXX. If they get this thing, know that they don't have to suffer." The CDC recommends vaccination for gay and bisexual men who either have a known exposure to monkeypox or have had multiple or anonymous partners in areas where monkeypox is known to be spreading. Vaccination appointments can be scheduled in Philadelphia by calling the Department of Public Health hotline at 215-685-5488.
