Fashion is all fun and games… until someone tells you to “dress more feminine.” This week, we're sitting down with Fajer @fajeroriginals —model, stylist, and expert at making any outfit her own—to talk about confidence, self-expression, and navigating fashion in a region where everyone has an opinion. We're getting into the pressure to be “ladylike,” the most unhinged comments she's ever gotten, and whether the region is finally embracing more diverse fashion choices. Plus, we put Fajer's fashion takes to the test in a rapid-fire round of Hot or Rot! All this and more in this week's episode!
Welcome to Season 5, Episode 7! Today's guest is Fajer Saeed Ebrahim, a Senior Policy Manager at the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum, AKA NAPAWF. If you're a longtime listener, then you'll remember we were fortunate enough to bring in Sydelle Barreto, the Policy Manager NAPAWF to talk about Clocking Inequality back on Season 4, Episode 39! NAPAWF has been hard at work with their latest report entitled “Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Community: Understanding Barriers to Access in Georgia”. Fajer is a skilled legal advocate with substantial experience in organizing, policy, and legislative advocacy related to reproductive rights and justice, racial equity, survivor justice, and immigrant healthcare. Prior to her work with NAPAWF, she was a senior advisor with the Coalition to Expand Contraceptive Access; a consultant with the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders; a consultant with the Center for Reproductive Rights, as well as other stops. NAPAWF is the only organization dedicated to uplifting and building power with AANHPI women and girls in the US. Employing a reproductive justice framework to guide their work, they use organizing, advocacy, and communications strategies to assert full agency over our lives, our families, and our communities. Working with the Emory University Center for Reproductive Health Research in the Southeast (RISE), this latest report by NAPAWF seeks to uncover the systemic barriers Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) women and gender-expansive individuals face in accessing sexual and reproductive healthcare (SRH). We recommend you read the full report, donate to NAPAWF, stay informed, and take action. Timestamps: 4:00 - Water cleaning in Switzerland 6:42 - Water and the agricultural sector 9:14 - Deep tech requires upfront capital 16:20 - Defending high deep tech valuations 22:14 - Convincing top talent to work for a startup About Fajer Mushtaq: Fajer Mushtaq is the co-founder and CEO at Oxyle, a cleantech startup with a game-changing water remediation technology. She holds a PhD in Micro- and Nanotechnology for Environmental Remediation from ETH and previously worked there as a BRIDGE Proof-of-Concept Fellow, before starting Oxyle in 2020. When we usually think of water pollution, we think of things like cigarette butts, plastic bags, or perhaps even bacteria or viruses. But what most of us fail to consider are micropollutants (like hormones, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, industrial waste, etc…), so called not because they're found in small amounts, but because a small amount is enough to have a carcinogenic effect, or cause infertility or birth defects. 1 nanogram per liter (which is the equivalent of 1 drop in 20 Olympic-sized pools) is concentration enough to cause humans and their ecosystems harm. What's more, these micro-pollutants are bioaccumulative (meaning if you keep drinking them, they keep increasing in concentration in your blood), and stay in bodies of water for decades on end unless treated appropriately. That's where the ETH spin-off Oxyle comes in. Oxyle works at the last stage of water treatment to remove these micro-pollutants through their innovative nanotechnology. They do so in a sustainable, scalable manner by getting in touch with big companies looking to remediate the harm they've caused and prevent any more harm from being done. This is equally as important in Switzerland as it is in other places: the water Swiss people drink has 17x the amount of carcinogenic pesticides that is safe to consume. Fajer strongly believes that fighting climate change is done not only through innovative startups like Oxyle, but also through regulation. We need to hold polluters responsible, and nowadays, due to the growing sophistication of water analysis techniques, we definitely can. This way we can both remediate the harm that's already been done, and stop future pollution at its source. Don't forget to give us a follow on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin, so you can always stay up to date with our latest initiatives. That way, there's no excuse for missing out on live shows, weekly giveaways or founders' dinners.
What can you apply from everything Fajer just shared? What can you steal and take home? Well, quite a lot if you ask me, starting with these seven insights I wrote down and number one:1. Customer-Driven Development:2. Pilot Strategically, and Prove Quickly 3. Build and Leverage Credibility:4. Position your technology as Future-Proofing for your Customers5. Prove your overall Sustainability in concrete terms6. Build as much as possible on existing infrastructure7. Data-Driven Customer Assurance:And there you have it, my 7 insights from Fajer Mushtaq in under 7 minutes, if you disagree with my selection, tell me, and if you'd like to dive deeper, well listen to the full interview!Remember, that episode came to you free of charge, but I would believe not free of value. It takes me quite some time to put all of those together every week, so all I'm asking is for you to help me distribute them! So take this episode, share it with a friend, a colleague, your boss, or your team, and I'll be back with another one next week! Oxyle is a company intensely focused on the treatment and monitoring of micropollutants, specifically PFAS. Over the last two and a half years, they have honed their technology to address the increasing market need for effective PFAS removal solutions. Oxyle's approach leverages existing water treatment technologies but with a sharpened focus on PFAS, positioning themselves as a benchmark in the industry. In this full podcast episode, Antoine Walter discusses with Fajer Mushtaq from Oxyle about the company's strategic refocus on PFAS pollutants. Over recent years, Oxyle has tailored its technology to specifically tackle the complexities of PFAS treatment, driven by market needs and the volume of customer inquiries. This adaptation has not altered their core technology but has sharpened its application, making Oxyle a leader in this niche market. The discussion delves into the technical aspects of their treatment processes, emphasizing the use of mechanical energy to enhance chemical reactions efficiently. Additionally, Fajer highlights the company's commitment to meeting rising regulatory standards while ensuring their treatments remain cost-effective and scalable, a significant concern for many of their clients. Oxyle's approach not only addresses environmental concerns but also aligns with the economic realities of the industries they serve, positioning them as a pivotal player in the water treatment industry.Unique Insights:Oxyle has recognized the shift in market demands towards PFAS treatment, adapting their technology to meet these new challenges without fundamental changes to their system. The company emphasizes the importance of not just meeting regulatory standards but ensuring the treatment process is cost-effective and scalable, which has become a significant concern for their clients. They highlight an innovative use of mechanical energy sources in their treatment processes, enhancing the efficiency of their catalytic reactions.Key Ideas:PFAS Focus: Oxyle has shifted its focus to PFAS due to high demand and regulatory pressure, aiming to establish industry benchmarks in this area.Technology Adaptation: Their technology uses mechanical energy from water flow, making it energy-efficient and effective at breaking down pollutants.Market Response: The shift was a direct response to customer needs, with Oxyle prioritizing PFAS treatment due to the volume of inquiries related to these compounds.Regulatory Compliance and Cost: Oxyle balances compliance with regulatory standards with the economic concerns of their clients, ensuring their solutions are accessible.Counter-Intuitive Facts:Use of Mechanical Energy: Oxyle uses the mechanical energy from water flow as a primary energy source for their catalytic process, which is a novel approach in the treatment of PFAS.Regulatory Ahead of Technology: While regulations are becoming stricter, Oxyle's technology was already designed to meet future standards, which is uncommon as many companies often scramble to meet new regulations.Cost-Effectiveness Over Direct Profit: Oxyle's business model focuses on long-term cost-effectiveness and scalability rather than immediate profit margins from their hardware, choosing to earn through operational excellence and service.Full Episode: https://dww.show/how-oxyle-destroys-pfas-with-the-energy-youd-actually-waste/Hosted by Ausha. Al-Fajer Group - "Halalalalayya - هلالاليا" from the 2022 (reissue) album Al Fajer (The Dawn) on Majazz Project This week's Song of the Day picks were chosen by DJs Miss Ashley, Kevin Sur, Tory, and Isabel Khalili in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle. From Hawai'i to Sudan, these songs represent the global solidarity movement in support of Palestinians and anti-colonialism. The BDS Mixtape series that features three of this week's songs was inspired by the 1985 Sun City album by artists boycotting apartheid South Africa. To learn more about the music and its connection to the cause, visit Majazz Project and Amplify Palestine. Formed in Kuwait in 1987, the Al-Fajer Group became known for their fiercely patriotic songs, written in response to the Palestinian liberation struggle. They performed their music acoustically, never using electronic equipment during their sets. Today's Song of the Day kicks off their debut album, Al Fajer (The Dawn) فرقة الفجر الفلسطينية, which was written and recorded in 1990, but was never released as the band fled the country after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990. The London-based Majazz Project / Palestine Sound Archive finally released the LP last year, marking the first time it has been available via vinyl. Chris is jealous of his guest today for two reasons. One not only is he a great Actor/Person, but he's also shared the screen with Adam Driver, Jon Hamm, and Annette Bening. Today's guest is the one and only Fajer Al-Kaisi! Fajer can be seen in the Amazon Original movie "The Report" available right now on Amazon Prime.

Our favorite couple Fajer and Alison, open up about cultural differences they’ve faced in their marriage (mostly Alison), from the pressures of marrying into an Arab family, greeting etiquette or going on a two and a half month trip through west Africa to prove that ‘an Arab man keeps his word’ All done with the overarching theme of the word مكلّح, or ‘shameless one’ used to describe people, situations and even objects. This week we talk to the Ambassador of Mexico to South Africa - Ana Luisa Fajer. We discuss some of the milestones in her three decade career as a diplomat with a special interest in Africa that began during her tertiary studies. We consider the impact that gender parity legislation in political parties had in Mexico’s 2018 general elections, after its introduction just four years earlier. We discuss women’s participation in the labour force, remarking on prevailing inequalities experienced by women, which impacts on their earnings, types of roles and advancing up their respective career ladders. We remark on the role of education as a tool of empowerment for women, not only in the formal sense but also informally on the home-front to readdress social and culture perspectives of women to advocate for gender equality. Tune in for more…
