This episode we're dreaming of a white Christmas, because White Christmas singer Bing Crosby was a local. He's Tacoma born and Spokane-raised. Crosby’s PNW connection is one of the many dazzling details in the book The Sound of Seattle: 101 Songs that Shaped a City. Eva Walker and Jacob Uitti talk to Patricia Murphy about musical influences that came out of our region – especially those that get little cred. What connects Seattle with Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, and Kenny G? How about the Melvins, Sleater-Kinney, and Foo Fighters? And Sir Mix-a-Lot, Macklemore, and Travis Thompson? If you don't know, KEXP DJ and musician Eva Walker and music writer Jake Uitti can tell you. Walker and Uitti have created a timeline of Seattle's music evolution through the lens of 101 songs spanning 80 years, the culmination of which, they say, creates a distinct “Seattle sound.” In their book, The Sound of Seattle, they highlight notable music and musicians who have ties with the Emerald city. It all begins in 1942 when Washington-born Bing Crosby records what will become the world's best selling single of all time, “White Christmas.” From there, Walker and Uitti explore multiple genres including jazz, rock, punk, riot grrrl, pop, rap, grunge, indie, emo, and more. This playlist, they believe, helped create Seattle's culture. With a foreword by Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready, The Sound of Seattle is organized by decade and includes interviews with Seattle legends like Heart's Nancy Wilson, as well as sidebars showcasing musical landmarks throughout the city. Seattle has many connections to music, and Walker and Uitti would argue that the city is shaped by them, and in turn, shape the people living in it. Eva Walker plays in the rock ‘n' roll band The Black Tones and is a DJ at KEXP. Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, she comes from a southern family of educators and music lovers. Her Louisiana-bred mother and grandparents have greatly influenced her music, work ethic, and manners. Eva believes in discovering, listening to, and experiencing music as much as possible. She has a deep love for Seattle music — from Jimi Hendrix to Jimmy James — and is an avid fan of classics, rediscoveries, and rare recordings. Jake Uitti's work has appeared in Vanity Fair, The Guardian, Interview, The Nation, The Athletic and many more publications. When not immersed mid-interview, Jake can be found in search of the city's best fried chicken or cheese pizza slice. He is the co-author of memoirs with NBA stars Muggsy Bogues, Earl Cureton and Michael Ray Richardson, and co-author of The Sound of Seattle: 101 Songs that Shaped a City with his radio DJ wife. The son of Ivy League professors, Jake grew up amidst tomes of French literature, but soulful meals, thoughtful music, thrilling sports, and compelling conversations are his true loves. Molly Sides is the dynamic frontwoman for the fiery all-female rock band Thunderpussy. A dancer, teacher, singer, songwriter and much more, she is incandescent. Jimmy James is one of the world's best guitar players. With a distinctive sound all his own, James has topped Billboard charts and is the consummate band leader in groups like The True Loves. Evan Flory-Barnes is a bassist and composer who has been creating and performing music since high school. He has worked with a wide range of artists and bands across various genres, performing across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Africa. Marco Collins has discovered and helped break more bands than some radio stations. His name is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and he's a legend in his own time. When you think of Seattle's music scene, you may think of Eddie Vedder's distinctive grumble, teen spirit deodorant, or maybe an ultra-famous song about large posteriors. But there's far more to talk about. There are thousands of songs that have a connection to this place, and quite a few that may surprise you. A new book narrows it down: “The Sound of Seattle: 101 Songs That Shaped a City.” Co-authors Eva Walker and Jacob Uitti are here to chat about Seattle's musical history, and about some of the lesser-known musical heroes of our town. I'm continuing to come at you with in-person interviews from festivals around the country -- and this time I'm celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Bumbershoot Arts and Music Festival, which took place in Seattle over Labor Day weekend.  In this Part 1 of another intriguing three-part series, I first sit down for a rousing conversation with Thunderpussy, a local Seattle staple, to celebrate the inclusivity and empowerment which are hallmarks of both Thunderpussy and the Seattle scene at-large. These amazing women will rock your socks off, among other things!!  Next up is one of my favorite people on the planet, the artist/musician/activist/mental health advocate, Cameron Lavi-Jones of the kick-ass rockband, King Youngblood. Cameron will literally and figuratively rock your world as he talks to me about the myriad causes he passionately and actively supports. He is a total gem of a human!Destroy Boys is in the 3-slot as I sat down with these thoughtful, energetic and surprisingly reflective punk rockers to discuss their roots in the Bay Area punk scene. As we gather outside the KEXP studios, they explain to me the nature and essence of the energy and purpose they bring to their fans around the globe.Last up are twins Cedric and Eva Walker, The Black Tones, who talk to me about their Seattle roots mixed with a New Orleans heritage, and how Rice Krispie treats can be so amazing.  This charming duo gives a new meaning to the love of family while bringing a unique energy and warmth to all their music and beyond.    For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comContact: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Slang - Chipped Tooth from the 2022 album Cockroach In A Ghost Town on Kill Rock Stars. In one of the most ultimate Northwest powergroup collaborations to come in recent history, Slang seemingly appeared out of nowhere. In fact, Drew Grow and Janet Weiss (the latter needing no introduction and Grow being a IYKYK frontman of Modern Kin and the Pastors' Wives and in-demand producer) have been slowly working on Slang for over a decade. Bringing with them a bevy of notable names for their first record Cockroach In a Ghost Town, including Kathy Foster (Roseblood, The Thermals) on bass and Anita Lee Elliot (Viva Voce) as well as appearances from Sam Coomes (Quasi), Stephen Malkmus (Pavement), and Mary Timony (Helium, Ex Hex, Wild Flag), it's a who's who of the Northwest Gen X scene. Our Song of the Day, “Chipped Tooth,” is an existentialist viewpoint of examining all the rough edges of yourself - be it your ragged brain, running wild with thoughts that slip into darkness quicker than you'd like, or the jagged points of a chipped tooth - always existing but not always noticeable until it's the only part of you that you can think about. “I think it's more our mutual appreciation of music that grabs you and grabs hold and shakes you to the core,” explained Weiss to KEXP's Eva Walker during their in-studio recorded in July. “I think we feel like this band has that potential to kind of get inside a person a give them strength and hope and just a joie de vive. Things get really hard and I feel like music is our saving grace so we all kind of look to music to lift us up.” Watch said in-studio and read the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week we have back on the podcast last week's hero, Eva Walker. I love Eva so much and think she's the coolest and had to ask her a million more questions! I recommend going back and listening to last week's episode (#57) if you haven't listened to it already. There's so much to learn from Eva in both episodes and I don't want you to miss anything!!Warning! This episode cuts off during a rant I have about UFOs and government disclosure! And breaking news, there is a third episode that will be available to our patreon dream club members! Go there to join in the fun!I do want to give a warning for this episode and all past and future episodes. Health, spirituality and healing is very personal and unique to each person. What works for me, or Eva, or any guest may not work for you. I think it's very important to use what works for you and what is accessible to you, and if you can seek help from a professional therapist or some type of professional! I like bringing all different views here so we can learn as much as possible and hopefully find little bits that help to take with us, and leave the parts that don't resonate with us behind! The Black Tones: https://taplink.cc/theblacktonesSupport us at patreon.com/deathvalleygirlsand please join the DVG Podcast page on Instagram (@DVGpodcast) and Facebook (Death Valley Girls Podcast)https://linktr.ee/DVGpodcast1. The Black Tones - "The End of Everything," a 2022 single on Sub Pop. Seattle twin sibling duo The Black Tones made a splash in 2019 with their gritty debut full-length Cobain & Cornbread which saw Eva and Cedric Walker utilize blues, soul, and grunge to explore topics both light and heavy. While “Ghetto Spaceship” and “Mama! There's a Spider in My Room” veered towards the former, songs like “The Key of Black (They Want Us Dead)” swung so dramatically towards the latter that it was clear the Walkers have important things to say. Since then, they've been using their art primarily just for that - to voice their concerns about the issues, be it political or personal, of the present moment. The George Floyd protests inspired them to write “My Name's Not Abraham Lincoln” in the summer of 2020 and, most recently, the culmination of two years of personal anxieties, grief, and anger led to our Song of the Day, “The End of Everything.” Named after the book The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking) by Katie Mack, the song confronts the fact that, whether it's the second coming of who or whatever you believe in, this will all end. A variety of gods and religious symbols - Jesus, Buddah, Allah, Confucious - are shouted out in the sludgey ‘90s-indebted scorcher that features vocals from former Talking Heads backing singer and member the 1970s disco group The Ritchie Family, Edna Holt. “This song is not a jab at religion or anything like that,” Eva Walker told American Songwriter in an interview. “This song is saying, it doesn't matter what you believe in, the second coming of whoever or whatever, this is all going to be over and it feels like humans might be speeding up that process.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

ODESZA - "The Last Goodbye (feat. Bettye LaVette)," a 2022 single on Foreign Family Collective/Ninja Tune. In Early February, ODESZA returned from a four-year hiatus to drop the cinematic soulful single, “The Last Goodbye.” Featuring reworked vocals from Bettye LaVette's 1965 soul/R&B track “Let Me Down Easy,” the track is a six-minute spine-tingling epic blending the Grammy-nominated duo's electronic grooves with LaVette's heartwrenching vocals to stirring effect. “This song was born out of the concept of trying to bring these lasting, defining musical pieces like the 1965 release of “Let Me Down Easy” by Bettye LaVette into a modern and contemporary electronic setting,” explained Clayton Knight and Harrison Mills of the song. “The idea of bringing two worlds together, that at first seem distant, has always been something we've been drawn to. It was an absolute honor to be able to work with Bettye's voice over the course of writing the track. She's able to convey emotion with her vocal work unlike any other. To date, this has been one of the more fulfilling songs we've had the chance to work on as artists.” The song comes from ODESZA's forthcoming fourth studio album of the same title, which according to a press release, is said to be their most ambitious and personal album to date and includes contributions from a number of notable artists including Låpsley, Ólafur Arnolds, Julianna Barwick, Izzy Bizu, and Charlie Houston. The video for “The Last Goodbye” artfully highlights the power of the instrumentation (including KEXP's Eva Walker on bass!) and features archival footage of LaVette performing “Let Me Down Easy.” Watch it at the link below.
