Listeners don't just experience a fascinating historical drama—they also become steeped in a bloody gothic Western. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Steve Cummings discuss the stellar performances that are the center of this compelling listening experience. Narrator Marin Ireland fully embodies the beleaguered humanities professor who, while deep diving into the campus archive, discovers the story of her ancestors. Complete with creative production touches, the result is a dark, satisfying listen. Johanna Taylor joins Jimmy on the podcast today to talk about The Ghostkeeper, her original graphic novel that came out in July 2024. Jimmy loved the premise of The Ghostkeeper so much he had to chat with Johanna about it. Now that he's read it and recorded the podcast he's been more devoted than ever around the Yeti Cave to convert others to readers. Johanna is an illustrator and artist with a BFA in animation. She discusses the story and art of The Ghostkeeper, the influence of Oscar Wilde, and finding inspiration as she travels. Jimmy and Johanna discuss some of the important themes of The Ghostkeeper, including dealing with loss and grief, burnout, taking on too much and feeling like you can't ask for help, the importance of caring for your mental health. They discuss all of this within the context of Johanna's beautiful art style. This is a wonderful conversation about a phenomenal graphic novel. The Ghostkeeper has also recently been translated into French AND Johanna was accepted to the Chateau Orqueveaux artist residency! She will be in France the end of April until mid-May. She'll be a guest at the Rayon Vert Comic Festival, and will have book signings in Chaumont, Nancy, and Paris. So if we have any French listeners, be on the lookout for Johanna! Buy The Ghostkeeper here: https://theghostkeeper.carrd.co/ Check out Johanna's website: https://www.johannamation.com/ Follow Johanna on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/johannamation.bsky.social Here is how the publisher describes The Ghostkeeper: Dorian Leith can see ghosts. Not only that, he listens to their problems and tries to help them move on to the afterlife. It's a gift that's made him an outcast to everyone in town. That is except for his dearly departed grandmother, who he's partnered with to turn this paranormal ability into an honest living, and the local bookshop owner, who seems to be the only non-deceased person willing to give him a chance. But it's all worth it to Dorian, who feels like he's been given a bigger purpose. A chance to save those who cannot save themselves. Then one day, the key to Death's Door is stolen, trapping all the ghosts in the land of the living. Since he's only one who can see them, the spirits rely on Dorian to retrieve the key before it is too late. If they can't move on, they'll soon be consumed by a ghostly rot that has begun to plague them. As it continues to fester and spread, and the ghosts become desperate for relief, Dorian must do whatever it takes to find a way to bring peace to the restless dead—even if that peace comes at the cost of his own…. For this episode, we welcome back Kevin Sur (Kānaka Maoli) and Tory J (Quinault), hosts of KEXP's global Indigenous music show. They bring a mix of new releases from Indigenous artists pushing the boundaries of sound, from experimental electronic to soul to hardcore, then share a lesser known track from the 70s group that brought the hit “Come and Get Your Love.” Finally, Music Director Chris Sanley shares a propulsive piece of futurist folk celebrating Black and Indigenous solidarity. When you think New Year's, you think a fresh start... growth... a chance at redemption. None of these things are present in Ghostkeeper, nor is there much New Year's celebrating. However, it is one of the few New Year's-related horror movies left to cover, and we couldn't help but check out this movie that includes a Wendigo creature that... doesn't really do anything. We talk about the slow pace, the snowmobiling, Marty being an asshole, and a whole lot more on this special New Year's episode! Ghostkeeper is a greatly acclaimed Alberta band, and at the heart of that band is a truly great love story. The story of Sarah Houle-Lowry and Shane Ghostkeeper is woven all through the band's music. The Ghostkeeper story started when Sarah and Shane got together, having grown up in and around the Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement at the very northernmost tip of Alberta's Peace River Country. Their lives and artistic endeavours have been intertwined ever since, giving rise to this band nearly two decades ago. The very heartfelt, homespun tales offered on the Calgary-based band's new album serve to open up a portal for other stories to find their way in; overlapping observations about family, community, culture, philosophy, spirituality, and all the important ways that we're connected with one another, and with the world. So it's fitting that this new record, which relates stories and ideas both very big and very small, is called Multidimensional Culture. Sarah and Shane took a break from their busy music, visual art, and family life to take us deep into the band's remarkable story, which is full of twists and turns, at least one accidental float down a river - and of course - the journey that brought them to Multidimensional Culture.

We're off to the Rocky Mountains this week as we talk Jim Makichuk's atmospheric Canadian snowmobile horror GHOSTKEEPER!!! Featuring one of the most insidious asshole boyfriends we've ever seen, Ghostkeeper is about three pals who end up at a defunct lodge in a blizzard where the mysterious caretaker is also the guardian of an ancient creature! Despite its production problems, this movie is an atmospheric and contained movie that is very enjoyable and kooky. How can the mountains be dangerous when they're so beautiful?

Ghostkeeper is a 1981 Canadian supernatural slasher film directed by James Makichuk, and starring Riva Spier, Georgie Collins, and Murray Ord. Its plot centers on a trio of snowmobilers in the Canadian Rockies who become stranded at an abandoned hotel where the elderly female innkeeper is hiding an evil entity within the building. We're mixing it up for the new year, and releasing Ghostkeeper, the little known 1981 Canadian horror film, this Friday. Set on New Year's Eve, this features a trio of folks snowmobiling in the mountains, disrespecting and disregarding the locals and landing themselves in a bad spot. Is there a ghost? Sorta? There certainly is some keeping, though. To go with this film set in sub zero temps, we chose Stock Ale, from Guinness Open Gate Brewery, a blend of Barleywine and Imperial Stout aged in barrels from Bulleit Bourbon. Get a fire in the fireplace, curl up with a beer to fight off the chill and join us this Friday. https://www.instagram.com/beer_and_b_movies/ https://twitter.com/beerand_bmovies
After years of doing this podcast, we've been really scraping the bottom of the barrel to find New Years-themed horror films. An unfortunate production history led to an interesting discussion of this film that even WE can't believe lasted about an hour.
It's the end of 2020 and we say "snow" long to this weird year by talking the obscure Canadian New Year's film Ghostkeeper from 1982! While we opine about some of the things we enjoyed about the year, we also discuss some topics such as Ski-Doo products, Mr. Rogers, and this movie's similarities to a certain Stephen King story.
On Christmas Day 1996, 24-year-old mother-of-two, Joanne Ghostkeeper, had plans to meet her parents in Edmonton, Alberta, for Christmas dinner and to open gifts with her two children, however, she failed to show up. Joanne's parents, Daniel and Mary, became concerned for her welfare, and as a result, police were sent to her apartment on 34th St. Within the apartment, authorities found Joanne's dead body; she had been strangled to death. No arrests or charges have ever been made, and this case remains unsolved. When IT made over $700 million at the box office, you know the second chapter in the Stephen King adaptation won't be far behind. The first movie took the horror world by storm, but will the second live up to its lofty expectations? Our weekly horror reviews are The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Devils of Darkness, A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, Avengers: Endgame, Ma, Ghostkeeper, The Dark Half, and Manhunt: Unabomber.
Strap in, because we’ve got a lot of ground to cover this month. Gabe and special guest Patrick Ripoll from Tracks of the Damned are looking into the peak year in slasher movie history: 1981. Originally assuming that this would shrink the number of movies to about 20, they learned that there were, in fact, 42 movies that people on the internet consider slashers released in the year 1981 – and they were foolish enough to think that was still a small enough number to discuss every single one of them in under two hours. “Perhaps this will be a two-parter,” Gabe wonders aloud at the top of the podcast. No. Absolutely not. This is now a three-parter. So, enjoy the first of three sweaty, panicked trips through slasher country, including (ahem): Scream (directed by Byron Quisenberry; aka: Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker and The Outing), Ghostkeeper (directed by Jim Makichuk) Corpse Mania (directed by Kuei Chih-Hung), Home Sweet Home (directed by Nettie Peña; aka: Bloodparty and Slasher in the House), A Day of Judgement (directed by Christopher Reynolds), Srigala (directed by Sisworo Gautama Putra; aka: Wolf), Night School (directed by Ken Hughes; aka: Terror Eyes), The House Where Death Lives (directed by Alan Beattie; aka: Delusion), My Bloody Valentine (directed by George Mihalka), Eyes of a Stranger (directed by Ken Wiederhorn), Murder Obsession (directed by Ricardo Freda; aka: Murder Syndrome), Madhouse (directed by Ovidio G. Assonitis; aka: There Was a Little Girl), The Funhouse (directed by Tobe Hooper), Love Massacre (directed by Patrick Tam Kar-Ming), and Bloody Moon (directed by Jess Franco). Follow along and check out what’s coming up using this chronological Letterboxd list: https://letterboxd.com/gabepowers/list/1981-slasher-movies/ Listen to Patrick’s extended thoughts on The Funhouse by listening to this episode of Tracks of the Damned: https://www.nowplayingnetwork.net/tracksofthedamned/s2e2 Episode two should be live in about two weeks, followed by an H.P. Lovecraft themed episode with Betsy from Your Favorite Monsters at the beginning of September and episode three two weeks after that (also in September).

CW: Abortion, Pedophilia, Rape Happy New Year from Pod Sematary! Chris and Kelsey wrap up their two-week New Year celebration with two horror movies that have something surprising in common: talented direction without the resources to execute! Our classic film is 1981's Ghostkeeper, a little-watched atmospheric horror from Canada about the legend of the Wendigo! When three friends visiting the Canadian Rockies for the new year get lost on their snowmobiles, they're forced to find shelter in a run-down lodge. While there, they meet a strange old woman who is protecting more than her rustic way of life. Did a dwindling budget ruin what could have easily become a seasonal hit? Then it's on to our modern film, 2008's The Children, a low-budget British flick that takes the Jaws route of suggestion over more explicit gore. What happens when two loving families become the victims of a disease that makes their children violent? Will they be able to keep it together long enough to make it to the new year? Is it surprising when a talented director can't write a coherent script? Get more at podsematary.com! We're now four episodes deep in First Listen Fridays, and we want to thank you all for checking it out. It's been such a privilege sharing unheard tracks (and the stories behind them) from Shawnee, Sister Says and the Snotty Nose Rez Kids ft. Hellnback. This week we go a little more experimental on you, featuring the dynamic and ever-evolving Calgary indie group Ghostkeeper. Fronted by long-time partners Shane Ghostkeeper and Sarah Houle, the band has released three albums incorporating everything from country and rock to African pop and traditional Aboriginal pow-wow music. In the latest episode of First Listen Fridays, they talk to us about the dystopian nature of their latest album, romanticizing their Metis upbringing and more. You'll also get a first listen to their haunting track, Three Winters Old.
When I called to interview Ghostkeeper, band frontman Shane was talking care of business in the bathroom. Luckily, bandmate Sarah spoke with me for a bit while I waited for Shane to finish up. The first thing Shane did when he got on the phone was describe himself as a B.F.I. (You will have to listen to hear what that stands for.) After he said that, I had no idea what to expect next. Tracks played on the show... 1) Ghostkeeper, Ghostkeeper "Haunted" 2) John Carpernter "Halloween Theme (Main)" (background) 3) Ghostkeeper, Ghostkeeper "By Morning" 4) Ghostkeeper, Ghostkeeper "Don't Come Knockin'" 5) Ghostkeeper, Ghostkeeper "Well, Well, Well" ALL songs CANCON
