Today's Song of the Day is “Disco Star” from Alsarah & the Nubatones' album Seasons of the Road, out now.
Brooklyn-based Alsarah & the Nubatones were formed out of many conversations around modern migration and the cultural exchanges between Sudan and Egypt (plus a common love of the pentatonic scale). Their third full studio album Seasons of the Road has been five years in the making and marked by perilous milestones. “Bye Bye” is one of the first songs they’ve written in English — a break up song written in the tradition of the blues.

Alsarah & the Nubatones - "Men Ana" from the 2023 album Rise Up: BDS Mixtape vol. 2 on Amplify Palestine This week's Song of the Day picks were chosen by DJs Miss Ashley, Kevin Sur, Tory, and Isabel Khalili in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle. From Hawai'i to Sudan, these songs represent the global solidarity movement in support of Palestinians and anti-colonialism. The BDS Mixtape series that features three of this week's songs was inspired by the 1985 Sun City album by artists boycotting apartheid South Africa. To learn more about the music and its connection to the cause, visit Majazz Project and Amplify Palestine. Written in the midst of the 2019 Sudanese revolution, today's Song of the Day is a tribute from Alsarah & the Nubatones to the youth resistance in her birthplace of Sudan. "This song was a call from the diaspora to home," she explains on Bandcamp. "In this song I hope to define myself through the joys of memories past, and those coming up. A song to plan for the joy you wish to have and focus the mind on the essence of who you wish to be so that future may happen." The accompanying music video was directed by Mai Elgizouli, whose aim was to show support for survivors with this clip. She shares, “As I listened to many stories from various young people who felt survivor's guilt after the traumatic events of the massacre I began to think more about the subject of mental health and the importance of Art and Music, especially during a time like this, in allowing us to come to terms with who we are and realize the importance of our emotional healing.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Thomas Attar Bellier, Dina El Wedidi, Alsarah, Ali Güçlü Şimşek and Alain Johannes discuss collecting sound memories from birth, Egypt's rich tradition of melodies, the power of modal music, why folk music is fundamentally old-school pop, and adapting traditional instruments for modern listening. Thomas Attar Bellier is a French-American musician and producer from the Arab garage rock outfit Al-Qasar. They combine instruments like the oud and the darbuka with Fender amps and drum kits to create a sound that unites East and West. Prolific Egyptian singer Dina El Wedidi plays a mixture of folk, fusion and contemporary music. She's been mentored by Brazilian legend Gilberto Gil, and Time Magazine declared her “a future leader for the next generation”. Alsarah is a Sudanese-American singer-songwriter and ethnomusicologist. After fleeing from Sudan aged 8 she's gone on to create music that she calls "East African retro-pop” with Alsarah & the Nubatones. Musician and producer Ali Güçlü Şimşek has been one of the biggest names in Turkish rock over the last 20 years. His current band Lalalar are making waves in the Turkish psych scene with their fusion of retro basslines, dirty electro beats and old samples from Turkey's rich psych-rock heritage. Chilean-American musician Alain Johannes has toured with Dave Grohl's Them Crooked Vultures and formed the band Eleven. He's also worked extensively with the likes of PJ Harvey and the Arctic Monkeys. They'll be talking

In this episode we're joined by Sudanese musician and ethnomusicologist, Alsarah — lead vocalist of Alsarah & the Nubatones. We speak about the weaponisation of music as propaganda by a repressive state, both historically and in the wake of Sudan's 2018/2019 revolution. We also chat through the failure of the nation state, orientalism as it relates to East & North Africa, as well as the legacies of not just European colonialism, but also that of the Turk and so-called Arab empire in the region. Miami is still in lockdown mode for large gatherings but we don't let that stop us as we travel, virtually, to Miami's beautiful open air, art deco North Beach Bandshell right across from the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy highlights from the just completed Afro Roots Virtual Fest featuring the city's leading globally grooving artists. Crank it up! Johnny Dread of Cuban/Rasta heritage opens up with his original mix of classic reggae, rock and international sounds. Cortadito, called the best Latin act by the Miami New Times in 2019, offers an updated version of 19th century son montuno from the mountainous region of northeastern Cuba while its two lead singers--one from Havana and one from Santiago de Cuba in the east--take turns performing originals from these two distinct traditions. The Spam All Stars stretch out with quirky spoken word, Latin and eclectic combinations. Venezonix perform Venezuelan roots music enlivened by electronic textures. And Alsarah of the Nubatones beams in a soulful duet from Brooklyn of her songs in Nubian and Arabic, reflections on diaspora and displacement, with her oud player Brendan Terzig. Remember the joy of dancing to live music ?! Ah yes. [APWW #820]
Here's a reminder that you don't need the approval of UN officials to feel valid. Kat however, actually went out and got the endorsement from Kofi Annan and became a Global Shaper for the World Economic Forum. Not through affirmative action bus simply because she's a born overachiever. For all details of Katlego's overwhelming resumé you should just go check her Wikipedia page. For now, let's focus on her love for 80's pop divas with some sidesteps into musicals and emo. Alsarah is one of strongest voices in modern international music, a singer, songwriter, an artist and ethnomusicologist, born in Khartoum, Sudan, to human rights activists parents. Now residing in New York since 2004. A pivotal moment in her story, where her journey as an artist began in the early 90's, her family fled from Sudan to Yemen, fleeing Sudan's 1989 coup to avoid being killed at age 8, then later moving to Boston to seek asylum. At the young age of 11, learning the word “refugee” didn't hold her back. Often identified as the princess of Nubian pop and Sudanese retro, her music, whether solo or with her band, pulls from the Middle East, East and North Africa, combining traditions and modern electronic music. Her, and her band The Nubatones have traveled the world many times over introducing Sudanese traditions to new audiences, spreading messages of empowerment, family, love and joy. On today's episode of Electronic Music Life with James Locksmith, Alsarah explains her take on the current state of Black Lives Matter, the backlash of Black Out Tuesday, the illusions of democracy, racism and colonialism in the music industry today. As Alsarah is concerned, we, the diaspora are the New Normal. We are constantly in motion, constantly filtering, constantly curating and constantly curating. This episode, like everything Third Culture, is all love. #WelcomeToYourTribe The Dukkan Show is hosted by OT, Reem, and Akkaoui. Episode is edited, mixed and mastered by Arthur Pereira. The Dukkan Show is a product of Dukkan Media LLC. About Alsarah: Alsarah is a singer, songwriter, bandleader and a somewhat reluctant ethnomusicologist. Born in Khartoum, Sudan, she relocated to Yemen with her family before abruptly moving to the USA, finally feeling most at home in Brooklyn, NY where she has been residing since 2004. She is a self-proclaimed practitioner of East-African Retro-Pop music. Working on various projects, she has toured both nationally and internationally. With her main outfit, Alsarah & the Nubatones, she has released 2 full-length albums titled Silt , followed by Manara (Wonderwheel Recordings, 2014 and 2016). She has also released 1 full-length album with French electronic producer Débruit titled Aljawal (Soundways Recordings, 2013). And she was featured on the Nile Project‘s debut CD, Aswan (named in the top 5 must hear international albums by NPR, 2014). Always trying to connect the musical dots both her full length albums with the Nubatones saw themselves reimagined and remixed by various acclaimed electronic producers in 2015's Silt Remixed and 2017's Manara Remixed (both via Wonderwheel Recordings). In between albums Alsarah also works with the Sudanese artist collective Refugee Club Productions on a variety of projects including the critically acclaimed documentary “Beats of the Antonov”. In order to understand the current sociopolitical conditions and deep Africana radical cultural influences moving in Sudan today, the long historical genealogy, the evolutions in physical geography, and the migration and interaction patterns of various communities of African peoples of the region must be explored. Despite the growth and retractions of the region, one of these descriptors that has lasted the evolution of time and space is Nubia. Throughout history Nubia and its component geographical part had a number of other references. Among one of the earliest is Ta-Setiu or the ancient Egyptian (Kemetic) reference to the area as being the “land of the bowpeople”. Another ancient Egyptian reference is to Ta-Nehesi which reflects the name of an ethic group of Nubia. The Greek invasions applied the term Dodekashoenos to the describe lower Nubia. Arab invasions used Butn al-Hajr (roughly translated as the Belly of Stones) for the section of the Nile from the second Cataract. Kush is another descriptor that was used to give reference to ancient Nubia. As used, Nubia is associated with an ancient word used for gold…the region often referred to as the ‘land of gold'. Imperial and linguistic efforts to control and redefine the peoples and regions by the Greeks, referred to Nubia as Ethiopia which included at times, parts of Libya. The central reason for this linguistic application was used to reference to the phenotypical identification of the “brunt faces” of the Nubians. Other descriptors, included Meroe. Christian Nubia refers to the three kingdoms of No-ba-tia, Mu-kur-ra, and Al-wa that cover this region, and Nubia was the reference to the region until the end of the 19th century. It was at this time, the name “the Sudan” came into used, from the Arabic expression Bilad as-Sudan, meaning “land of the blacks”. Which was essentially an Arabic translation of the Greek “Ethiopia”. It was further used throughout Muslim literature generally to refer to Africa beyond the Sahara. The continuity of Africana radical tradition follows the trajectories of resistance, internationally. The influences and evolution of Africana radical thought and practices can be seen in Malik el-Shabazz praxis. According to the article X Marks the Spot: Mapping Malcolm X's Encounter with Sudan, though Malik el-Shabazz (Malcolm X) travels in the middle East and Africa put him in touch with the most revolutionary movements of his time, it was his ongoing contacts with students, scholars, and religious leaders from Sudan that had a truly transformative effect on his beliefs about race and religion. Today, we add to this genealogy and discourse a conversation with Alsarah of the Nubatones. Alsarah is a singer, songwriter, bandleader and a somewhat reluctant ethnomusicologist. Alsarah & the Nubatones were born out of many dinner conversations between alsarah and rami el aasser about nubian ‘songs of return', modern migration patterns and the cultural exchanges between sudan and egypt. Our show was produced today in solidarity with the Native/Indigenous, African, and Afro Descendant communities at Standing Rock; Venezuela; Cooperation Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi; Brazil; the Avalon Village in Detroit; Colombia; Kenya; Palestine; South Africa; and Ghana and other places who are fighting for the protection of our land for the benefit of all peoples! It's Midday on Music and today explore music as a window into Muslim Culture, and the creative work of Muslim women, who are being celebrated in a series at the Creative Alliance in Baltimore this season called Nisa'a Women. My guests this afternoon are Sudanese singer Alsarah and her band The Nubatones. The group is in town as the second installment in the Nisa'a Women series. They are conducting workshops at local schools, they'll be at a community potluck for refugee and immigrant communities and they will give a concert at the Creative Alliance tomorrow night. Later on, a discussion about the growing popularity of Contemporary African music. Despite Hip Hop and Afrobeats artists dominating music charts around the world, they were not well represented at this year's Grammy awards. Stephanie Shonekan ,University of Missouri Associate Professor of Black Studies and Ethnomusicologist, joins us on the telephone to discuss who wins awards, who doesn't and why.

For most of us, home is a fleeting memory or a threatened story, a fragmented dream that we dare to remember. Rooted in the silt of Sudan and Nubia, and inspired by the eastern coast of Africa and the diversity of its sounds and migrational patterns, Alsarah & the Nubatones are banded through stories of movement and belonging in the face of today’s worldwide anti-immigrant atmosphere. Follow them on a musical migration from Brooklyn, across the globe, on this episode of B-Side. For more from Alsarah, visit: www.alsarah.com •••• The B-Side Podcast is produced by Charlie Hoxie, Kecia Cole, Ro Johnson and Sachar Mathias; recorded by Onel Mulet; and edited by Khyriel Palmer and Emily Boghossian. Every year, the world-famous Apollo Theater and New York’s World Music Institute pack the house for a stellar lineup of established and emerging artists from the African continent. This year was especially impressive. We bring you concert highlights and interviews with artists from Ghana, Sudan, Niger and Zimbabwe. You’ll hear Alsarah and the Nubatones, inspired by the rich cultures of Nubia, Jojo Abot’s arty, dancehall-meets-Afrobeat grooves, Bombino’s joyous Tuareg rock, and the discovery of the night for many Afropop fans: Mokoomba from Zimbabwe, featuring phenomenal lead singer Mathias Muzaza, who spanned nods to Salif Keita, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, as well as a Congolese soukous animation that had the crowd up and dancing. Special bonus: a taste of the acoustic “traditional” set Mokoomba performed the next day up the Hudson. Produced by Sean Barlow. #728 Distributed April 21 Africa Now! 2016 Rocks the Apollo Theater in Harlem Every year, the world-famous Apollo Theater and New York's World Music Institute pack the house for a stellar lineup of established and emerging artists from the African continent. This year was especially impressive. We bring you concert highlights and interviews with the artists--from Ghana, Sudan, Niger and Zimbabwe. You'll hear Alsarah and the Nubatones, inspired by the rich cultures of Nubia, Jojo Abot's arty, dancehall-meets-Afrobeat grooves, Bombino's joyous Tuareg rock, and the discovery of the night for many Afropop fans: Mokoomba from Zimbabwe, featuring phenomenal lead singer Mathias Muzaza, who spanned nods to Salif Keita, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, as well as a Congolese soukous animation that had the crowd up and dancing. Special bonus: a taste of the acoustic "traditional" set Mokoomba performed the next day up the Hudson.
Zach Fredman is a musician, composer, and rabbi-in-training now in his fifth year at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Over the past several years, he has worked to combine his spiritual and musical passions by composing devotional songs that draw on his favorite musical traditions. Those include Indian raga, North African rhythms and forms of chanting, as well as the Grateful Dead and Aretha Franklin. For lyrics, he turned to Torah and other religious texts. For collaborators, he turned to musicians whose work, like his, isn’t easily categorized. Perhaps most surprising is his singer Alsarah, a Muslim woman who grew up in Sudan and Yemen, went to Wesleyan University, and now leads the band Alsarah and the Nubatones from her base in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Together, the 10-person band, which is called the Epichorus, is releasing their first album, One Bead, available here at the end of this... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Alsarah, is a Sudanese born singer, songwriter and ethnomusicologist. She studied Music with a concentration in Ethnomusicology at Wesleyan University. Inspired by the pentatonic scale they blend a selection of Nubian 'songs of return' from the 1970s-today with original material and traditional music of central Sudan. The Nubatones is comprised of Alsarah, Haig Manoukian, Karine Fleurima, Rami El Aasser, and Mawuena Kodjovi To hear more about Alsarah, please visit:www.soundclould.com/alsarah.
