I met Mike Cernovich a few years ago when I was making a documentary based on Angela Nagle’s book, Kill All Normies. Back then I had the same impression of him that you likely did, and that you probably still do: I thought he was a Trump-loving, men’s rights-touting, right wing troll. But after chatting with him, I liked him anyway. Mike was thoughtful, honest, candid, reasonable, self-disparaging, and fair-minded. I’d read the New Yorker profile of him. I’d seen the tweets and heard the slander. I’d even interviewed Zoë Quinn, Mike’s Gamergate nemesis, (I liked her, too), who’d told me exactly what she thought of Mike Cernovich (she despises him). Liking this guy was not what I’d expected.I could have easily made the decision then to tell everyone who’d listen that I’d met Mike Cernovich and he was exactly the piece of human garbage you’ve been told he was. My milieux back then was pretty conventionally left-wing, so that would have been the easiest thing to do. (I did in fact say basically that about Lucian Wintrich, who I also interviewed for the same film, because that’s exactly how he came across to me.) I probably could’ve even gotten VICE to run it.But that would have been a lie. And even worse, it would have cost me the opportunity to get to know someone who came from a completely different political tribe than I did — an enemy tribe, no less — to learn what values he actually holds and why he holds them. It would have cost me the chance to learn, for the hundredth time, that the cartoon characters the media writes about rarely measure up to the actual human beings they’re meant to describe (Wintrich being the exception to that rule).Over the years, Mike and I DM’d quite a bit on Twitter and became friends. We shared some important things in common, such as a deep moral concern for the welfare of industrially exploited animals, and a reflexive distrust of the elite, whether they’re dressed up in right wing or left wing garb.As it turned out, by the end of the Trump presidency, we came to share another thing in common: a deep contempt for Trump.Mike went to the mat for Trump in 2016, and among liberals, he’s still regarded as a Trumpist. But Mike has in fact come to loathe the man, for reasons we go into in this podcast.Mike didn’t benefit politically from his turn against the former President. It certainly didn’t do anything to soften his image in the liberal media (nor did he try to capitalize on it by selling himself as a Lincoln Project-style turncoat to the MSNBC crowd), and it earned him plenty of enemies among his own erstwhile fans. But along with the rest of us, he had watched this undeniably buffoonish administration embarrass itself, and instead of making excuses, he was honest about it.Whenever I discuss my fondness for Mike publicly, somebody trots out a bunch of his old tweets and demands that I answer for them. It’ll probably happen this time, too. But I don’t take the bait, not only because it’s a boring subject but also because I don’t demand of others that they justify everything that their friends and associates have ever said, so I don’t acknowledge that as a legitimate expectation of myself. Mike has a big megaphone to speak for himself, anyway. He doesn’t need my defense, and I don’t feel obligated to defend myself.Regardless, I’ll probably lose a few followers and subscribers for “platforming” Mike Cernovich (whose own platform dwarfs my tiny little perch in the first place). But if Mike is comfortable losing some friends by being honest about what a pathetic little worm of a man Trump is, then I guess I can follow his example and lose a few by being honest about what a smart and decent guy I believe Mike to be.If you’re skeptical about that, then just go ahead and listen to the episode. If, after hearing him for yourself, you remain unconvinced, then fair enough. I make a point of not letting political disagreements get in the way of personal relationships, which is the entire reason I became friends with Mike Cernovich in the first place. But I think you’ll change your mind, even if only a little bit, about Mike.—LeightonP.S. I’ve already released the next episode of the podcast, with Catherine Liu, to paid subscribers only. I eventually make every episode fully public, but if you’d like to hear them a few days in advance, here’s the button: This is a public episode.

The notion of "lived life" is the axis on which her artistic practice is articulated and she states: “What is truly monumental is the life who has been lived. The heated culture wars of the 1990s are back – the modern battle ground is the internet. The rising alt-right, full of transgressive energy, includes everyone from obscure neo-reactionary and white separatist movements to geeky subcultures like 4chan to world-famous trolls and provocateurs. In contrast, lurking behind a wall of trigger warnings and no-platforming, the left looks like a reactive filter-bubble of retweets and struggle sessions. For the fifth episode of MUTATIONS, I am pleased to bring you Michael Brooks. Michael is a political journalist, integral thinker, and host of The Michael Brooks show. Together we explore the Intellectual Dark Web (the subject of his upcoming book from Zero Books) and Jordan Peterson. We also consider the alternative depth psychologist, James Hillman (who arguably speaks more from the left), the applicability of Ken Wilber’s Integral Theory to politics, a need in the consciousness culture for a historic grounding in economic theory, and building towards authentic, bottom-up planetary meshworks.SHOW NOTES / FLORILEGIUMThe Michael Brooks Show on PatreonMichael’s TwitterThe Michael Brooks Show on YouTubeMichael Brooks on Zero BooksJames Hillman, We’ve Had a Hundred Years of Psychotherapy—And the World’s Getting WorseJames Hillman, Re-Visioning Psychology (Recommended)Rebel Wisdom with Doshin Nelson Roshi (apologies for the brain fog during the recording), “A Zen Master Talks About Jordan Peterson and the Shadow”Notes: This conversation and the heated, bifurcated response to it (200k+ views) is very interesting. So much so that there was a follow-up episode with Rebel Wisdom to reflect on why it hit such a nerve. Ken Wilber, in the late 90s and early 2000s, critiqued much of postmodern academia and the progressive left as “flatland reductionism,” “mean green meme” (via Don Beck’s Spiral Dynamics), and “aperspectival madness” (an unfortunate hijacking of Jean Gebser’s term, ‘aperspectival,’ which means something completely different) many years before the Peterson phenomenon in popular culture. There is some substance in these criticisms, (i.e. “true-but-partial”). As we noted in this episode by way of Mark Fisher’s essay, or Angela Nagel’s Kill All Normies, a critique from within the left is needed, and as Rebel Wisdom says often, “the left needs to get its house in order.” I’m in support of this. However, a knowledge and literacy of leftist“theory” is something I often sense is sorely lacking in the integral movement. This is something that Wilber shares with Peterson: a postmodern “allergy,” a lack of progressive metabolism. Integral oriented thinkers from the progressive left desperately need to step forward and bridge that gap. This is why I’m so interested in working with Jean Gebser’s insights into the aperspectival consciousness/integral culture to explore the phenomenology of our culture: the stasis of Gebser’s deficient mental-rational structure, and the crisis of late capitalism, co-inform my understanding of Mark Fisher’s capitalist realism and the Möbius strip of consc --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mutations/message

On this edition of Parallax Views returning guest, my partner-in-crime at Zero Books' Alternatives podcast, and personal friend C. Derick Varn returns to discuss the life and punditry of Britain's arch-conservative pessimist Peter Hitchens. Although his renown, at least in the U.S., has often been eclipsed by that of his brother, the late New Atheist crusader Christopher Hitchens, Peter is a fascinating figure in his own right who has become the UK's resident doom-and-gloom reactionary that liberals and leftists alike love to loathe. And yet Hitchens rejection of Reagan-Thatcherite individualism, coupled with his scathing critiques of elites on both sides of the political spectrum, have made him a commentator of interest to left-leaning individuals like myself, C. Derick Varn, and Kill All Normies author Angela Nagle among others. He may not be someone we agree with, but he is a refreshing and worth adversary, especially in the sea of grifting hacks that make up much of the right-wing media ecosystem today.

We have a very special guest for this episode. Douglas Lain, of Zero Books. In the interview, we discuss a range of topics, but I think the focus of the interview is on how capitalist narcissism is playing out in leftist online culture. Specifically we address: How podcasting has enabled a new debate among the left, concerning the priority of identity; The rise of the Alt-Left, and whether or how the term functions to smear those seeking to re-assert the priority of revolutionary values in leftist discourse; We also address the critical reception of Angela Nagle’s sensational new book, Kill All Normies, published by Zero Books … a book that is ostensibly about the emergence of the Alt-Right, but in this conversation, Doug and I focus mostly on the other main aspect of the book, which is Nagle’s explanation of the rise of “call out culture” on the left. Finally, with the #DSACon17 (the 2017 Democratic Socialists of America convention) starting this week, I ask Doug if he has any advice for delegates to the convention.

Following the election of Donald Trump, the alt-right has come to play a significant role in American political discourse. They are an upstart political movement that rejects traditional conservatism and championed Trump and his opposition to political correctness. But how did a movement rooted in online and video game culture come to be so influential? Angela Nagle (@angnagle) is an Irish writer and academic who has written extensively on the rise of anti-feminism and the revitalised culture wars. She’s recently written a new book called Kill All Normies, in it she documents how fringe online politics and discussion boards have become mainstream.   Alex Burd spoke to Angela to discuss the book. He started by asking when the alt-right became a mainstream force. Angela Nagle: It has to be the election of Donald Trump. I know that's very recent. Maybe you could say something like Gamergate brought a lot of different right leaning movements and forums and things that weren't very overtly political ended up much more closely mingling over Gamergate. Those are the younger ones. The more serious people like American Renaissance and Richard Spencer and people like that, they're a bit older and have been around for years. They've been taking things much more seriously and have been for a long time. But it's only when all these geeky online sub cultures started to come together that it started to be more legitimate to call them the Alt-Right rather than just the far right. Alex Burd You reference the Gamergate movement. How is that it went from something that was about 'ethics in games journalism' to a political ideology built around the twin pillars of misogyny and white supremacy? AN: Well essentially, depending on who you ask. Gamergate - the gamers say it's about 'ethics in games journalism', the people on the other side say they were merely pointing out sexism in gaming and ended up getting viciously attacked. The people involved in it love endlessly having these competing stories about the precise details of particular attacks which I don't find remotely interesting. Even if you take the most conservative estimate of the levels of attack that were going on they were really bad. Even the ones that are out there for the public to see. And you know a critic should be able to argue that gaming is dominated by sexist attitudes, but essentially it was viewed by gamers - where they got the 'ethics in games journalism' line from is a very long, boring story - essentially it was over political correctness. What they perceived to be feminists and anti-racists and liberals trying to change the culture and take away their fun hobby and destroy everything through liberal censorship. One of the reasons I'm not very sympathetic to that is I just think that, as in film, there's room for different viewpoints. These people were not saying games containing sexism should be banned. They were just saying that the kind of style that dominates has an attitude towards women that they had an issue with. It became basically, for whatever reason, it brought together all these different groups from the Daily Stormer, which is a Nazi website, through to apolitical vaguely sort of pro-free speech types. It brought together a whole range of people that saw themselves in different ways as opposing political correctness. AB: And they were politicised by the fact that a largely white male space was becoming invaded leftist politics and women in particular? AN: Yeah, definitely. Leftist cultural politics, yeah. AB: How did it go from a misogynist reaction to that to something that has become heavily based around white supremacy and racial politics? AN: Well when I started looking at reactionary forums of different types, I started my PHD about seven years ago, I finished about two years ago, I was looking at anti-feminist forums and at that time opposition to feminism was the main issue that really animated these kind of forums.
