This episode is an upload to Spotify of my response to Abigail Thorn's "Was Nietzsche Woke?" video. This video was previously uploaded to Youtube.Watch me spend more time than the entire length of Abigail Thorn's video explaining why it is a superficial hit piece based on strained, bizarre arguments and outright false information. There are many "creative omissions" in Philosophy Tube's video, "Was Nietzsche Woke?": rather basic information about Nietzsche's life and his ideas is left out that would completely one's view of the information presented. In this rebuttal, we'll look at the statements in Nietzsche's own published works in Human, All Too Human (1878), Daybreak (1881), The Gay Science (1882), Beyond Good & Evil (1886) Ecce Homo (1888) & Twilight of Idols (1888) as well as selections from Nietzsche's letters, his essays, and unpublished notes assembled in Will to Power. Philosophy Tube's video relies almost entirely on secondary sources and clearly does not derive from a direct engagement with the actual texts. While I actually have read all of the primary source material, I also reference the following secondary sources in this video:The Legend of the Anti-Christ: A History by Stephen J. Vicchio (2009)Nietzsche, Philosopher, Psychologist, Antchrist by Walter Kaufmann (Fourth Edition, Princeton University Press, 1974)Nietzsche's Women: Beyond the Whip by Carol Diethe (2013, De Gruyter)I was also informed in my study by the biographies provided by Krell & Bates, as well as Curtis Cate and the work of Charlie Huenemann. Stephen Hicks' book, Nietzsche and the Nazis, while I disagree with it on many points, was also helpful in elucidating the difference between Nietzsche's view of Christianity versus that of the Nazis. Also, Robert Solomon helped contextualize the common views around eugenics in 19th century Europe.

Nish and Coco are joined by Abigail Thorn (actress, writer and host of PhilosophyTube) and Freddy McConnell (writer and journalist) to examine the issues facing the trans and non-binary community in the UK today. In recent news, the current Tory government has proposed new guidelines for education in schools across England. Education Secretary Gillian Keegan said that gender identity should not be taught in schools to students of any age. Abigail and Freddy respond to these news headlines and also discuss The Cass review, a proposed new approach from the Labour Party around the Gender Recognition Act, and which individuals need highlighting for their work on trans rights in the UK. In this unique episode, your host Paul Harvey delves into the fascinating concept of "phantasm" and its profound impact on how our life narratives are formed. He explores how our perceptions, fueled by information, experiences, and influences, shape our understanding of reality and consequently our actions. Understanding this powerful tool can be crucial in charting our life path in a more meaningful way. Pulling insights and examples from everyday life, historical events, and even modern political curtains, this episode provides a vivid depiction of the world seen through the lens of a phantasm. Paul also delves into why we often choose to ignore certain realities and instead embrace narratives that suit our situations better, thereby inviting us to step into the world of phantasm. This illuminating conversation will not just get you thinking about your own perception of reality, but also about the wider societal narratives that govern our collective psyches. From the conflict in the Middle East to climate change discourses and intriguing conspiracy theories, listen as Paul brings alive the many shades of human perception and its power to mould the world as we see it. Peppered with valuable resources and recommendations, Paul shares thought-provoking insights from podcasts like Philosophy Tube and Things Fell Apart. Concluding the episode with an update on his upcoming book, Paul enthralls his listeners with a captivating blend of introspective analysis, thoughtful storytelling, and a potent message to check facts before jumping to conclusions. As always fused with tips, tools, and invaluable insights, this episode is a must-listen for those keen on understanding the intricate interplay between our perceptions, narratives, and lives. Since his death in 1616, William Shakespeare has often been held up as one of the greatest (if not the greatest) English-language writers. Nevertheless, the world in which Shakespeare was writing was clearly a very different on to that which we live in today. So, what is it that keeps audiences, creatives and other thinkers coming back to his work?In today's episode of Induction, Tom chats with Philosophy Tube creator and writer behind The Prince, Abigail Thorn.Watch or listen to every episode of Induction two weeks early at http://go.nebula.tv/inductionCheck out Abigail's videos on YouTube at https://youtube.com/@philosophytube*The Induction Team*Hosted by Tom NicholasEdited by Georgia BurrowsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Art YouTube ranges from academic to street, high-brow to low-brow, natural, performative, good and bad. In ArtiFact #41, writers Alex Sheremet, Ezekiel Yu, and Dan Schneider tackle some of the more popular art YouTube channels, dissecting their arguments, assumptions, and presentation. Our questions include: how does YouTube incentivize poor artistic judgment and packaging? Does overly performative criticism damage the field? I wasn't sure if I was going to do this one until next week, but it is flying around in my head. And it seems to be the thing that my brain wants to talk about. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: On Philosophy Tube's Video on Effective Altruism, published by Jessica Wen on February 24, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. tl;dr: I found Philosophy Tube's new video on EA enjoyable and the criticisms fair. I wrote out some thoughts on her criticisms. I would recommend a watch. Background I've been into Abigail Thorn's channel Philosophy Tube for about as long as I've been into Effective Altruism. I currently co-direct High Impact Engineers, but this post is written from a personal standpoint and does not represent the views of High Impact Engineers. Philosophy Tube creates content explaining philosophy (and many aspects of Western culture) with a dramatic streak (think fantastic lighting and flashy outfits - yes please!). So when I found out that Philosophy Tube would be creating a video on Effective Altruism, I got very excited. I have written this almost chronologically and in a very short amount of time, so the quality and format may not be up to the normal standards of the EA Forum. I wanted to hash out my thoughts for my own understanding and to see what others thought. Content, Criticisms, and Contemplations EA and SBF Firstly, Thorn outlines what EA is, and what's happened over the past 6 months (FTX, a mention of the Time article, and other critical pieces) and essentially says that the leaders of the movement ignored what was happening on the ground in the community and didn't listen to criticisms. Although I don't think this was the only cause of the above scandals, I think there is some truth in Thorn's analysis. I also disagree with the insinuation that Earning to Give is a bad strategy because it leads to SBF-type disasters: 80,000 Hours explicitly tells people to not take work that does harm even if you expect the positive outcome to outweigh the harmful means. EA and Longtermism In the next section, Thorn discusses Longtermism, What We Owe the Future (WWOTF), and The Precipice. She mentions that there is no discussion of reproductive rights in a book about our duties to future people (which I see as an oversight – and not one that a woman would have made); she prefers The Precipice, which I agree is more detailed, considers more points of view, and is more persuasive. However, I think The Precipice is drier and less easy to read than WWOTF, the latter of which is aimed at a broader audience. There is a brief (and entertaining) illustration of Expected Value (EV) and the resulting extreme case of Pascal's Mugging. Although MacAskill puts this to the side, Thorn goes deeper into the consequences of basing decisions on EV and the measurability bias that results – and she is right that although there is thinking done on how to overcome this in EA (she gives the example of Peter Singer's The Most Good You Can Do, but also see this, this and this for examples of EAs thinking about tackling measurability bias), she mentions that this issue is never tackled by MacAskill. (She generalises this to EA philosophers, but isn't Singer one of the OG EA philosophers?) EA and ~The System~ The last section is the most important criticism of EA. I think this section is most worth watching. Thorn mentions the classic leftist criticism of EA: it reinforces the 19th-century idea of philanthropy where people get rich and donate their money to avoid criticisms of how they got their money and doesn't directly tackle the unfair system that privileges some people over others. Thorn brings Mr Beast into the discussion, and although she doesn't explicitly say that he's an EA, she uses Mr Beast as an example of how EA might see this as: “1000 people were blind yesterday and can see today – isn't that a fact worth celebrating?”. The question that neither Mr Beast nor the hypothetical EA ask is: “how do we change the world?”. Changing the world, she implies, necessitates chang...

Elle discusses the DSM-V and its sometimes implicit (or explicit) pathologizing of different ways of thinking and feeling. Digital versions of this book are widely available (here's the first google search result) and rightly so given that it is the dominant tool for understanding mental health problems by professionals today. Elle talks about how the term "Transvestitism" was recently applied in her work at a mental health clinic, and how this led to deeper thinking about the medicalization of transgender identities. She closes the episode by discussing the ways in which culture helps people make sense of their experiences for better or for worse. Additional resources for this week's show might include: This article, which discusses the history of Gender Dysphoria as a diagnostic concept. The wikipedia article on transgender history provides a solid introduction on the topic for people new to exploring how the phenomenon is considered by cultures throughout history and time. Abigail Thorn's (a PhD philosopher) personal and philosophical reflection on her experience with gender identity and transition. Her channel is the wildly popular Philosophy Tube. Watch this one. Well for episode 15 we thought it might be worth discussing the great Wakefield fraud, the MMR scandal, the lies and damage that were spread by that disgraced former doctor. Join Simon, Kuro and Marinne for what turned out to be the hardest episode we have ever recorded. It took two days and four attempts to get everything recorded. It took 4 days to edit and cut down. This is not an easy subject, we tried to keep lighthearted in it and we did cut out a lot of the darker aspects of the study that underlies the MMR fears. We added a trigger warning at 14:10 as we briefly discuss the experiments on the children. We sanitised it as much as possible but if you would like to skip that part, jump to 135 where you will hear a few seconds of music before we move on to less difficult aspects of the episode. We make reference to a number of sources throughout the episode. I would like to point you towards the excellent Abigail Thorn in a Philosophy Tube video “Vaccines & Freedom” where she discusses research and interviews people who have declined the Covid-19 vaccine and reviews the philosophy behind vaccine hesitancy. My main source for everything was Brian Deer and his book, which I would highly recommend for anyone who wants to know the depths to which Wakefield sunk and the pain that was caused. I quoted from a BMJ article when I called Wakefield a fraud, and that Journal has a number of interesting articles available freely online. It is well established that Wakefield and Barr were working together prior to the study, again see both Deer and the BMJ for more details. And as for his money making schemes, those make up a great deal of interesting articles. Not to mention is measles jab patent some two years beforehand. And lastly, vaccines DO NOT CAUSE AUTISM. I know sometimes it feels like we are trying to get cancelled but we're not. Abigail Thorn is a Youtube content creator with a show called Philosophy Tube. we did our best to watch and respond the a video she did about Dr. JBP's latest book and where he fell short according to them. Mike is quite the JBP apologist and will go to great length to defend him. With that, we found ourselves diving into the pool of the transgender discussion. This episode features our dear liberal friend 'Vanilla' Will smith and it was a great conversation that I am proud to share with you. https://youtu.be/m81q-ZkfBm0

Always looking to improve the tools available, she designed and built Stepper Acid, a modular sequencer loosely based on the TB-303, but geared more towards live performance. This was well received by other musicians too, and has been used by the likes of Nine Inch Nails's Trent Reznor and Underworld's Rick Smith. The product is marketed through her Transistor Sounds Labs company. In addition to her solo work, Nina is also known for writing music for actress Abigail Thorn's YouTube channel Philosophy Tube.https://www.ninarichards.co.uk/Stepper AcidStepper Acid is a 16-step Eurorack sequencer module designed with live performance in mind, designed and built as a collaboration between Nina Richards and Zoë Blade.https://www.transistorsoundslabs.comCaro C BiogCaro C is an artist, engineer and teacher specialising in electronic music. Her self-produced fourth album "Electric Mountain" is out now. Described as a "one-woman electronic avalanche" (BBC), Caro started making music thanks to being laid up whilst living in a double decker bus and listening to the likes of Warp Records in the late 1990's. This "sonic enchantress" (BBC Radio 3) has now played in most of the cultural hotspots of her current hometown of Manchester, UK. Ridley calls in with some concerns about the direction of the atheist movement online, but Vi and Eric have some hopeful words of encouragement! 15:18Marci has recently deconverted from Christianity and is struggling to come to grips with heaven not being real. “It's like mourning a second time.” How do you get through the horrible feelings of grief when you deconvert, and what should next steps be? Vi and Eric empathize and offer some resources (and try not to cry). For more information about Recovering from Religion, visit: https://www.recoveringfromreligion.org/ 25:20The anti-choice theist calls back for round two! In an effort to get to the heart of the disagreement, Vi and Eric poke and prod to find Setuf's moral structure, while calling out loaded language and unscientific claims left and right. Can they find common ground… or should they even try? (And yes, the caller's name IS an acronym for “fetus.”) Watch Setuf's first call into Skeptic Generation: https://youtu.be/F4fsFdVZFxs 45:37 Student Doctor Ben calls in to address some of the recent calls around abortion and why we're looking at the issue wrong. He walks the hosts through what actually happens during abortions at all stages of pregnancy, and why it's not like what anti-choice people claim. Required viewing for anyone frustrated by the abortion calls being had recently! Check out more Student Doctor Ben here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKti4xis1ZJ2FQFAuDQ1kpg 58:45Joe is a theist who wants to know why atheists tend to reduce the big questions to cold scientific facts rather than engage with emotion. Vi points out that emotion has often been used against atheists, so we often overcorrect to avoid falling for bad arguments. That said, there is room to grow, and we shouldn't be afraid of expressing emotion (as long as our interlocutors are honest). 1:13:31 What do the hosts think of the death penalty, and how does that play into skepticism? It's difficult to approach such intense topics with rationality, but Vi and Eric point out the various flaws (both philosophical and practical) with capital punishment. A Note from us! We are now producing WEEKLY bonus episodes. That means you get 2 episodes of the podcast a week, one for free, and the other, for subscribers only. At the end of this month, subscribers above $10 tier will also get access to the discord channel, which will have a bunch of cool stuff on there. You can subscribe to us for as little as $5 a month at: www.patreon.com/10kpostspodcast. ------- This week, we're joined by actress, Youtuber and podcast host Abigail Thorn (@philosophytube) all the way from the spooky mountains of Transylvania where she's shooting an upcoming film. While she's incredibly busy with a hectic shooting schedule, Abigail still found time to challenge us in The Battle of Ideas - specifically, how we on the show have talked about influencers and content creators. Abigail suggests that the breadth of multimedia content on the internet - alongside the rapid bleeding out of 'online content' into 'mainstream' entertainment, means that terms such as 'content creator' may be obsolete, not least because so many people are involved in it. Moreover, Abigail suggests that in 'mainstream' entertainment, including in areas such as Theatre and Opera, established artists actually *want* to be content creators and influencers - and in some cases, see it as more 'real' than other aspects of the entertainment industry. We also talk about film studios continuing to mine ideas from Twitter, and whether this is not only influencing how high-budget cinema is being made, but also, what viewers and audiences actually expect from the entertainment they consume. You can subscribe to Abigail's Youtube channel, PhilosophyTube, here: https://www.youtube.com/user/thephilosophytube --------- Ten Thousand Posts is a show about how everything is posting. It's hosted by Hussein (@HKesvani), Phoebe (@PRHRoy) and produced by Devon (@Devon_onEarth). For weekly bonus episodes, subscribe at www.patreon.com/10kpostspodcast.

@Carefree Wandering as Grizwald Grim noticed got attention by making a video about @Philosophy Tube and his timing was perfect. To critique an examplar of trans-physicalism will be both punished and rewarded in the Attention Economy. But why? I've been working on upper and lower register videos for a bit now and finding it a helpful way to map and track "the religious" within us. Durkheim's "homo duplex" in many ways maps onto the upper and lower register facilitating the emergence of "the holy" among us. https://twitter.com/GrimGriz/status/1449938433946890240 Commodification of Philosophy https://youtu.be/0RmJO2IwHek Kant's Ideas: Do they matter? This was one of those instances, and resulted in a decision to terminate the call. Leon & Libby call in from the UK to talk about why it's inadvisable to vaccinate children for COVID-19. What is racism? How does it operate, and to what extent is it a problem for all of us? The way my first guest on Politeia sees it, and I agree, is that societies either are racist or they aren’t—there’s no such thing as a not-racist society that has racist people in it. The question for us, then, is how can politics as philosophy help us understand the problem of racism and what can we learn about how to move forward with creating a truly anti-racist society? What is racism? How does it operate, and to what extent is it a problem for all of us? The way my first guest on Politeia sees it, and I agree, is that societies either are racist or they aren’t—there’s no such thing as a not-racist society that has racist people in it. Welcome to The Mad LiberTEA Party, where up is down, left is right, the rum's always gone, and the world is full of clowns. If you feel like the world's gone mad then pull up a chair and we'll throw you a teacup because we're all mad here. In this first episode, Mike and Paxton kick it off with a bit about the show and a preview into what is to come. Take a moment to get to know us and the show as we skim the top of topics such as the FDA, regulation, drugs, outrage culture, gun rights, the two party system, LGBTQ+, Free Speech, and Abortion. We look forward to hearing your feedback and to many more episodes with guests and more focused topics. EDIT: At one point in the show Paxton mentioned this particular topic and the numbers were off so here's some information on the Opioid Trial: 1. https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2019/08/26/754481268/judge-in-opioid-trial-rules-johnson-johnson-must-pay-oklahoma-572-million 2. https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwiC8Ia6-NLkAhURQ6wKHfGCCOcQzPwBegQIARAC&url=https%3A%2F%2Fabcnews.go.com%2FUS%2Foklahoma-judge-set-reach-decision-latest-major-opioid%2Fstory%3Fid%3D65193231&psig=AOvVaw1Z9TIbsViEoyks5ESHIH-V&ust=1568640790510547 Did our featured creator make you curious? Oliver Thorn is an actor and educator, best known as the creator and host of the popular YouTube channel Philosophy Tube. Boasting around half a million subscribers, Olly’s channel is notorious for its well-researched content and colourful presentation. With over six years of videos under his belt, it is fair to say that Olly is going over and above in his goal of giving away his philosophy degree for free. In this episode, we’ll be getting at the man behind Philosophy Tube, discussing the role and responsibilities of those contributing to public-facing philosophy. When we present philosophy in the public sphere, what are our goals? Should they the same as those in the philosophy seminar room - our desire being rigorous, detailed, delicate contemplation - or does public media demand something else? In short, do we need to change our ways to make philosophy accessible? Contents Part I. Behind Philosophy Tube Part II. Further Analysis and Discussion Links Philosophy Tube, YouTube Channel Philosophy Tube, Twitter Philosophy Tube, Patreon Interview: Philosophy Tube, What’s it like to be a philosopher?

.... according to Republicans. Hey folks, sorry for the long hiatus. At the end of the episode, I talk about why I haven't been recording this show. But before that, I had a conversation with a family member that really made me think about Republicans and how they think about race. I sort of had an epiphany that I wanted to share. As more of daily life gets taken over by technology, we ask what technology’s place is in the future of education. Pearson, the world's largest education publisher for example has just announced that it plans to phase out physical books, and adopt a "digital first" strategy. So will lectures of the future be conducted purely on a virtual screen, with professors and students interacting digitally across hundreds or even thousands of miles? Ben Nelson, chief executive of the Minerva Project, an online learning project, thinks so. But Princeton historian Kevin Kruse is not convinced. He tells Ed Butler how he has had to deal with the dark side of “education” on the internet. Also in the show, Oliver Thorn delivers philosophy education and entertainment on his YouTube channel Philosophy Tube. While "study-tuber" Ruby Granger can help you, and her 350,000 other subscribers, with revision. Recently there have been a few articles to this effect, because of something Richard Spencer said in a video. What should we make of it? On this show, this topic dates back to the Nazi punching debates of yesteryear, but was reinvigorated what a local antifa group interrupted an event at King's College of London featuring Carl of Akkad and someone named Yaron Brook. Here's a video that shows most of the scuffle. At the time I condemned it as not the way to solve things. I stand by that. But I also think I haven't given antifa a proper shake. So this episode seeks to do all of that and to do my best to find what I think the proper balance should be. It's quite a tightrope walk! Here's a fantastic Philosophy Tube video on antifa, and a quick Vox one as well. Also I've got quite an important show announcement at the end. Leave Thomas a voicemail!
