Cost of Living Crisis with David Linden MP & Councillor Jen Layden. The Office for National Statistics recently reported those earning below the UK average wage will pay up to an extra £255 per year, with the forthcoming Tory national insurance hike. The lowest earners have seen their universal credit cut by £20 a week by the Tories, all while they were trying to grapple with inflation running at over five per cent and climbing. For example, foods such as rice have shot up over three hundred per cent in cost. To exacerbate the issue further, national rises in electricity and gas costs will send family bills skyward, with average households facing another £800 a year in energy costs. If that sounds bad, spare a thought for those living in rural areas or not connected to gas mains and reliant on electricity or fuel as heating oil. Their costs will be three or four times that amount. And families are dealing with all this while feeling the Brexit bite, low wages and spiralling costs. In today's episode, Activision Blizzard employees are planning action in light of the company's internal responses to the lawsuit filed by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing. Recently, employees of the mega-publisher/developer signed an open letter expresses their...disappointment in company leadership's response to the lawsuit, and now employees, both in-office and working from home, are staging a walkout scheduled for tomorrow. Former Chairman of Sony Worldwide Studios Shawn Layden had some sharp words for the gaming industry. He took issue with rising game development costs and lack of diversity in games being produced. Layden partly blamed it on game companies being consolidated—a possible veiled jab at Microsoft, perhaps? And finally, if you're planning on attending PAX West in September, you'll need to provide proof of a COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test. The Delta variant is spreading, and the PAX Team wants to help provide for the safety of both event workers and attendees. Smart move, IMO. It's your Daily Fix!

Recently named Business Person of the Month by The Irish Times, in association with Bank of Ireland, Gwen Layden of the Layden Group talks about her company's decision not to charge rent to tenants of the George's Street Arcade in Dublin who were forced to shut due to Covid restrictions. While waiving rents at the famous arcade cost her family business in terms of lost income, Layden has maintained that it would have been immoral to charge rent to her clients during lockdown.

New Orleans was Frank Layden's favorite place to scout games as a matter of convenience. Back in the 1970s, Layden was an assistant with the Atlanta Hawks and Louisiana was just an hour's flight away. He could fly in, watch his team's upcoming opponent, and be back in his own bed by midnight. Perfect. The affable coach from Brooklyn couldn't have known back then where those trips to the Big Easy would eventually take him—or just how hard that journey would be.
