North America’s electricity grid faces a shortfall of power. A grid policy expert explores one region’s efforts to ensure reliability and the controversies its proposals have raised. --- In December, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, or NERC, released its annual assessment of grid reliability across North America. The results were concerning. NERC, which is the organization responsible for setting grid reliability standards, reported that electricity supply is struggling to keep up with rapidly growing demand across much of the U.S. and Canada. In several major grid regions, electricity shortfalls could occur under challenging conditions within the next one to three years. On the podcast, Abe Silverman, assistant research scholar at the Ralph O’Connor Sustainable Energy Institute at Johns Hopkins University, discusses the threat of electricity supply shortages with a focus on one area of the grid in particular, the PJM Interconnection. PJM is the largest regional grid operator in the U.S., serving 65 million people in the eastern part of the country. PJM recently announced that it, too, could face a capacity shortage as early as 2026. To date, the grid operator has undertaken a complex set of actions to address its challenges, with more efforts on the way. Silverman explores PJM’s looming supply shortfall, and examines the steps it’s taking to shore up supply. He also explains the controversies that some of these actions have raised. Abraham Silverman is an assistant research scholar at the Ralph O’Connor Sustainable Energy Institute at Johns Hopkins University, and former general counsel for the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. Chariot Ltd (AIM:CHAR, OTC:OIGLF) Chief Financial Officer Julian Maurice-Williams joined Steve Darling from Proactive to shared insights into a transformative financing agreement for Etana Energy, the South African electricity trading platform 49% owned by Chariot. British International Investment (BII) and GuarantCo have announced a $100 million guarantee facility to support Etana's mission of delivering sustainable, cost-effective power solutions by connecting generation projects to industrial and commercial users via South Africa's national grid. The financing includes $50 million from each guarantor and marks the largest energy wheeling framework transaction in South Africa to date. This innovative deal guarantees customer demand, providing renewable energy developers with the revenue certainty needed to advance new projects. The $100 million guarantee facility is expected to unlock an estimated $500 million in renewable energy investments, enabling the development of approximately 500 MW of wind and solar capacity. Maurice-Williams highlighted the deal's potential to catalyze a significant expansion of sustainable energy infrastructure in South Africa, aligning with Chariot's commitment to advancing the global energy transition. #proactiveinvestors #chariotlimited #aim #char #africa #transitionalenergy #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

Energy storage is a vital cog in building a sustainable grid. It helps us manage the intermittent supply of renewable energy from wind and solar energy sources. Our guest today brings a unique solution to energy storage by repurposing idle gas and oil wells for gravity energy storage. Welcome to this special episode of Hardware to Save a Planet. Joining us today is Gregory Kemp, Co-founder and CEO of Renewell Energy. Dylan and Kemp discuss Renewell's innovative approach to repurposing idle oil and gas wells for gravity-based energy storage. Kemp explains how this solution addresses renewable energy's intermittent supply, repurposes existing infrastructure, and offers economic incentives for oil companies. They explore challenges like wire rope durability, costs, and regulatory hurdles. Kemp also highlights the future potential of converting thousands of wells into storage systems, which could contribute significantly to clean energy. He emphasizes focusing on specific problems to combat climate change effectively.
Last month saw record amounts of renewable energy produced for August, provisional data from grid operator EirGrid shows. Around 898 GWh (Gigawatt hours) of electricity was generated from grid-connected windfarms in August, the highest ever figure recorded for that month. This provided for 34% of electricity used in Ireland, representing an increase from the previous August record of 867 GWh set last year. Meanwhile, grid-scale solar power surpassed the historic 100 GWh mark for the second month in a row in August, with the figure of 103 GWh of electricity produced accounting for 3.9% of demand last month, falling slightly behind the all-time record set in July. Overall 40% of electricity used in August came from renewables, with total electricity system demand standing at 2,639 GWh for the month. Gas generation accounted for 37% of all electricity used in August (977 GWh), with 18.6% being imported via interconnection (492 GWh), 3% coming from coal (78 GWh), and the remaining 1% from other sources. EirGrid is responsible for leading Ireland's transition to a low-carbon future so that 80% of electricity can come from renewables by 2030, as set out in Government targets. Diarmaid Gillespie, Director of System Operations at EirGrid, said: "While we had a bit more wind power on the system compared to August 2023, the amount of solar energy generated for the grid almost doubled from the same month last year, which shows the rate of progress we're seeing in integrating different types of renewables onto the electricity grid." It's believed New Zealand's current energy dilemmas highlight the double-edged sword of renewable power. Low lake levels, acute gas shortages, and periods of low wind have contributed to a looming energy supply crisis and skyrocketing prices. Our biggest gas user, global methanol manufacturer Methanex, will shut down its Kiwi operations until October and redirect its gas to Contact Energy and Genesis Energy. Major Electricity Users' Group Chair John Harbord says it's a fix, but just a temporary one. He told Mike Hosking new gas is urgently needed no matter if it's imported or explored. Harbord says being reliant on renewable energy also means an increased reliance on gas and coal. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this enlightening episode, Isaac Orr from the Center of the American Experiment delves into the complexities of renewable energy and its impact on power grids across the United States. Orr argues for a reevaluation of what we consider 'renewable' energy, arguing the term 'renewable' might be misleading, suggesting a shift towards labeling these energy sources as 'unreliable.' He sheds light on the hidden costs and inefficiencies of renewable energy sources, pointing out that, despite significant subsidies, they prove to be more costly and less efficient than traditional energy sources.Orr illustrates how states heavily invested in renewable energy—from California to Texas, traversing through Ohio to the Northeast—are experiencing increased instances of power emergencies, including blackouts and brownouts. This episode not only challenges the prevailing narrative around renewable energy but also explores the broader implications of these energy policies on our daily lives and the environment. Join us as we navigate through the controversial and often misunderstood realm of renewable power, its economic ramifications, and why speaking out on these issues might attract unwarranted attention, as experienced by the Center of the American Experiment.
Renewable power – which includes wind farms, solar farms, and hydroelectric dams – constitutes over 21% of the country's utility-scale electricity generation, behind only natural gas power plants at 43%. Nuclear power provides nearly 19% of our electricity and coal, which is gradually diminishing, is at 16%. Both solar and wind power capacity have been […]
