On December 19, ten years ago, BYU announced that Kalani Sitake was the new head coach of the BYU football program. Sitake has experienced many twists and turns during his head coaching tenure, but after a decade on the job, he has never shied away from being bold. Now he has BYU set for potentially greater heights with his new long-term extension. KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper reflected on Sitake's past 10 years and the moment he was announced as BYU's head coach. Harper also gave his predictions for the 2025-26 College Football Playoff. Will former BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff lead Tulane to an upset win over Ole Miss in Oxford? Then, finally, NBA superstar LeBron James immediately paid his respects to AJ Dybantsa after the final seconds went off for the Lakers-Jazz game. BYU has a player who could potentially be the face of the sport in the future. BYU basketball welcomes Abilene Christian to the Marriott Center. Harper previewed the game. All this year, we've been checking in with Christiaan Mader, founder of the Current in Lafayette, Louisiana, for updates on the Acadiana region. He joins us now to reflect on some of the biggest stories from the past year and look to what's ahead. On December 20th, Tulane will face off against Ole Miss in the College Football Playoff. If Tulane wins, they'll go to the Sugar Bowl for the first time since 1939. And while the Green Wave suffered a pretty brutal defeat from Ole Miss back in September, the university's recent coaching drama may create more opportunities for the New Orleans team to succeed. At the helm of Tulane is quarterback Jake Retzlaff, who's been generating a following for his performance and demeanor both on and off the field. He formerly played at Brigham Young University, where he dove further into his Jewish faith at the predominantly Mormon school.Retzlaff faced a civil lawsuit that accused him of sexually assaulting a Salt Lake County woman in November 2023. The lawsuit was dismissed on June 30 after "the two sides agreed to dismiss the case with prejudice." Retzlaff transferred to Tulane instead of likely facing a seven-game suspension for violating BYU's honor code, which requires students abstain from premarital sex. Retzlaff joins us for more on his journey to Tulane, how he's raising the profile of Jewish athletes and his approach to the playoffs. The Louisiana holiday staple “The Nutcracker – A Tale from the Bayou” returns to the Baton Rouge stage next week, featuring professional ballet dancer Emilia Perkins. This is a homecoming for Perkins, who first danced in the production when she was just four. She joins us now to talk about the impact it's had on her life and career, and what it is like to take the stage in her hometown as the Sugar Plum Fairy. —Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Karen Henderson. As far as Jewish filmmakers go, the Safie brothers could well be the GOATs (Greatest Of All Time) when it comes to Jewish sports cinema. One of their earliest collaborations was a 2013 documentary on high school basketball star Lenny Cooke; their breakout feature, Uncut Gems, was a sports-adjacent thriller featuring a Passover Seder with Adam Sandler and Idina Menzel; then younger brother Benny Safdie went on to star in Sandler's Happy Gilmore sequel—another sports film with a Jewish lead character. Now, in late 2025, the brothers (who are great-nephews of architect Moshe Safdie, for those wondering) have gone their separate ways, each directing their own sports movie. Benny directed The Rock in a biopic of MMA fighter Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine, while older brother Josh Safdie tapped Jewish actor Timothée Chalamet to play table tennis champion Marty Reisman in Marty Supreme. While Marty Supreme is slated for a Christmas Day release 2025, the Globe and Mail's film editor, Barry Hertz, just published a review of the Oscar contender, in which he says the story "burns with the relentless, fight-for-your-life spirit of the Maccabees.... With apologies to Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights, Marty Supreme is, thematically and spiritually, the greatest Hanukkah movie ever made." Hertz joins the Menschwarmers to explain his reasoning and how this ping pong epic fits into the larger canon of Jewish cinema. And before that, the boys chat about Jake Retzlaff leading the Tulane Green Wave to success, and get to the source of an incorrect rumour about the Toronto Blue Jays' Eric Clement being Jewish. Duncan shared his thoughts on Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall, quarterback Jake Retzlaff, and running back Jamauri McClure. He also previewed the Lane Kiffin era at LSU and celebrated Saints rookie quarterback Tyler Shough's growth as a leader.
The Southeastern 16 crew previews the playoff game between Tulane and Ole Miss. Topics include: It's a rematch in a game Ole Miss won, 45-10, earlier in the year, while dominating the stat sheet in that one. The Rebels are an eyelash away from five 500-yard receivers to catch passes from dual-threat star Trinidad Chambliss. Dependable running back Kewan Lacy has been punishing defenses all year with physical play. Tulane coach Jon Sumrall will finish his run in New Orleans before leaving for Florida, while Ole Miss is in its first game under Pete Golding, its former defensive coordinator who's retaining offensive coordinator Charlie Weis for the Playoff. Ole Miss's defense has been quietly underrated. Dual-thread quarterback Jake Retzlaff leads the Green Wave offense. It's taken the Menschwarmers several weeks of mourning to get over the Toronto Blue Jays' World Series loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and no amount of broadcast cutaways to 89-year-old Sandy Koufax in the crowd during that intense seven-game series can help. But now, weeks later, after the shivas have ended for that miracle run, The CJN's sports podcasters are back—and they have a lot to look forward to. In this episode, they take note of Deni Avdija, the Portland Trail Blazer who's having a breakout season that could make him the first Israeli to ever make an NBA All-Star team. Then they turn to Zach Hyman, who triumphantly returned to the Edmonton Oilers and immediately logged a career-high 11 hits in a game, after getting injured in last season's Western Conference Finals and missing the Stanley Cup Finals entirely. After that, they look south to college football, where Jake Retzlaff has lead the Tulane Green Wave to tie for first place in the American Conference. There are plenty of accomplishments worth celebrating for Jewish athletes—catch up on what's happening with this week's episode of Menschwarmers. We conclude our Big 12 preview series with our third and final installment, breaking eight more teams and their burning questions headed into 2025. These eight teams represent the conference's intriguing middle tier: Utah, TCU, Kansas, Cincinnati, BYU, Houston, Oklahoma State, and Colorado. In this college football podcast episode, we break down Utah's offensive makeover with new coordinator Jason Beck and quarterback Devin Dampier, examining whether Kyle Whittingham can bounce back from his first losing season in over a decade. We dive into TCU's brutal schedule despite having one of the conference's best passing attacks with Josh Hoover, and debate whether Kansas can capitalize on the good vibes of their reopened stadium and another year of Jalon Daniels at quarterback. We discuss Cincinnati's make-or-break year under Scott Satterfield, BYU's quarterback crisis following Jake Retzlaff's late departure, and Oklahoma State's rock-bottom 4.5 win total after Mike Gundy's worst season ever. Plus, we quiet Willie Fritz's steady rebuild at Houston and Colorado's fascinating next chapter without superstars Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter. Which programs will exceed expectations with new coordinators or transfer quarterbacks? Which will struggle with brutal schedules and roster turnover? And how will the unpredictability of the Big 12's middle tier shake up the conference (and playoff) conversation? This is your deep dive into the Big 12's most compelling question marks.
