Jake Retzlaff has earned a spot as one of America's top college football quarterbacks, rising with the Brigham Young University Cougars as the first Jewish quarterback to ever play at the Mormon university. But it's precisely that religious juxtaposition that got Retzlaff in trouble with the BYU Cougars, after a brief legal action in May 2025 saw an anonymous accusation of sexual assault lobbied against the college athlete. Even though the case was dismissed with prejudice on June 30, Retzlaff conceded that he had sexual relations with the woman, which is against BYU's religious rules. Instead of facing a lengthy suspension, Retzlaff applied for a transfer. BYU's loss turned into Tulane University's gain, as Retzlaff will now vie for the starting QB spot on the Tulane Green Wave, repping a university that proudly stands as one of the first in the American South to allow Jews—and now has, according to some estimates, a Jewish student population as high as 40 percent. How will Retlaff perform at "Jewlane" University? What are the expectations? We ask Isaac Popper, an insider with the Green Wave and sports reporter based in New Orleans, for answers. We conclude our Big 12 preview series with our third and final installment, breaking eight more teams and their burning questions headed into 2025. These eight teams represent the conference's intriguing middle tier: Utah, TCU, Kansas, Cincinnati, BYU, Houston, Oklahoma State, and Colorado. In this college football podcast episode, we break down Utah's offensive makeover with new coordinator Jason Beck and quarterback Devin Dampier, examining whether Kyle Whittingham can bounce back from his first losing season in over a decade. We dive into TCU's brutal schedule despite having one of the conference's best passing attacks with Josh Hoover, and debate whether Kansas can capitalize on the good vibes of their reopened stadium and another year of Jalon Daniels at quarterback. We discuss Cincinnati's make-or-break year under Scott Satterfield, BYU's quarterback crisis following Jake Retzlaff's late departure, and Oklahoma State's rock-bottom 4.5 win total after Mike Gundy's worst season ever. Plus, we quiet Willie Fritz's steady rebuild at Houston and Colorado's fascinating next chapter without superstars Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter. Which programs will exceed expectations with new coordinators or transfer quarterbacks? Which will struggle with brutal schedules and roster turnover? And how will the unpredictability of the Big 12's middle tier shake up the conference (and playoff) conversation? This is your deep dive into the Big 12's most compelling question marks.
