In today's Daily Fix:According a report from Bloomberg, Xbox's recent layoffs and game cancellations were due to a lofty profit margin goal set by Microsoft. Currently, the gaming industry standard is around 17%-22% profit margins, but Microsoft has allegedly pushed Xbox into hitting a high 30% profit margin. The goal was apparently set around the time Xbox was completing its acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023. In other news, Borderlands 4 is off to a great start for Gearbox and publisher 2K Games. The game is reportedly outpacing Borderlands 3 in terms of dollar sales in its first month of release (it's worth noting that Borderlands 4's different editions are more expensive than Borderlands 3's). Borderlands 4 also debuted as the number one premium title for September. And finally, Elden Ring's Switch 2 port has been delayed. The Tarnished Edition, which includes the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, has been pushed to sometime in 2026.

In related news, the price of Xbox development kits has gone up, but considerably more compared to retail consoles. Series X and S dev kits are now selling for $2,000, up 25% from $1,500. The Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X are $599 and $999 respectively, and feature Xbox-themed UI and connect to the users' Xbox accounts, but are technically ASUS products under the ROG brand. Despite the price, Microsoft claims the devices have sold out on the Xbox store and other retailers, and the critical response has been overall positive, despite the steep price. In other news, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3's co-director is saying that the game's combat system is not yet decided, despite calls for the series to return to turn-based roots. This comes after the surprise success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which features many game mechanics popularized by JRPGs like classic FF titles. And finally, a leak about more Resident Evil remakes may prove to be real, with reports saying Resident Evil 0 and Code Veronica are next on Capcom's to-do list.

Welcome back to Next-Gen Console Watch! This week Daemon, Max, and Ryan take a look at Microsoft's recent comments committing itself to another generation of gaming console hardware. The Xbox brand had a pretty rough week recently, when they announced a price hike on their Game Pass Ultimated service, on top of the already-announced hardware price hike. Fan response was, as expected, not great, with the Game Pass membership website reportedly crashing due to the number of people logging on to unsubscribe. Does another generation of Xbox hardware make sense for Microsoft? And how can they go about fixing the Game Pass service?

Currently, Fortnite is doing their annual Halloween event, but with the game already partnered with other Disney-owned properties like Family Guy and Star Wars, a Simpsons collab makes sense. In other news, HBO Max has dropped the first trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. It's an adaptation of the novella series set in the Game of Thrones universe but before the events of the main series. It features a hedge knight named Ser Duncal the Tall and his squire, a little boy named Egg. Heat famously brought together Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro in a movie where they would finally share scenes, after the two already became Hollywood legends throughout the 1970s and 80s. Rumor has it that Leonardo DiCaprio is circling the role played by Val Kilmer in the original movie. In other news, the Hulu-exclusive Predator prequel, Prey, might finally get a theatrical release. AMC Theaters may be holding double-feature screenings this November, pairing it with the upcoming sequel, Predator: Badlands. In today's Daily Fix:Elon Musk has set an ambitious goal for his xAI Studio to make a "great" AI-generated game by the end of next year. xAI is the Musk-owned company behind Grok, the chatbot built into X (formerly Twitter). AI-generated games are nothing new, but so far they've been limited in scope. Game industry experts, such as Epic's Tim Sweeney, are bullish on the technology, claiming that eventually AI prompts can be used to make games in the scope of Nintendo's Zelda games. Speaking of Nintendo, the company dropped an animated short film today, featuring a baby chasing after a pacifier. It doesn't seem to be connected to any exisiting Nintendo IP, so it's a bit of a mystery as to why it was even made. And finally, the Predator is returning to Call of Duty as part of Black Ops 6's "The Haunting" seasonal event. This coincides with the release of the latest Predator, Predator: Badlands, which recently earned a PG-13 rating.

A rumor from a supposed insider claims that Microsoft has paused development on their next-gen Xbox hardware, prompting many to agree that this seems the likeliest route, especially after hardware and Game Pass price increases have led to severe backlash from fans. Microsoft insists the company is moving forward with the next generation of Xbox hardware. Originally released in two volumes six months apart, the two halves have been slightly re-edited as one film as originally envisioned by Tarantino.

In today's Daily Fix:Xbox did it again, and by "did it" we mean a Game Pass price hike. And by "again," we mean this is the second time in just over a year that they raised subscription prices. So far, only the Ultimate tier is getting a price increase, from $19.99 to $29.99 — an jump of 50%. In the U.K., the increase is about 53%. The lower tiers aren't changing in price, but are getting re-branded as Essential (replacing Core), and Premium (replacing Standard). There's also some extra perks coming to subscribers, but already the response from gamers has not been great. And in The Witcher news, creator Andrej Sapkowski regrets a single line that he wrote in the early days of the books, that now has become a big deal in the video games.

Tilly Norwood is the creation of Eline Van der Velden, founder of AI production company Particle 6. In other news, Terminator 2D: No Fate has been delayed to November. The publisher says it's because of the ongoing complications with global tariffs, and the game is still planning on shipping physical editions. And finally, Capcom devs working on Resident Evil aren't quite sure they know what's scary anymore.

In today's Daily Fix:Electronic Arts has announced plans to sell itself to a consortium of investors led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners (formed by President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner). In today's Daily Fix:CD Projekt RED is staffing up for Cyberpunk 2 with a job post looking for a lead network engineer. Responsibilities would include developing and optimizing "multiplayer systems, including matchmaking." So it sounds like Cyberpunk 2 is going to include a multiplayer mode, possibly similar to the scrapped mode that was supposed to be post-launch content for Cyberpunk 2077. Cyberpunk 2 isn't supposed to go into full development until after The Witcher 4 is out the door, so it may be a long while before we hear more. The recent Assassin's Creed Shadows, for example, doesn't feature any present-day gameplay sections at all. In other news, developers for Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 are backtracking some of their DLC plans. Gamers have called out Silksong's steep difficulty, with some saying it's 'unfair.' And finally, Dead Island 3 could be in the works at developer Dambusters. The team celebrated the franchise's 14th anniversary on Steam and teased that the outbreak isn't over.

Hines was the Senior Vice President of Global Marketing and Communications as Xbox-owned Bethesda, and in a recent interview has questioned the value Game Pass provides to developers. Another former Microsoft VP, Shannon Loftis, backed up Hines' comments, adding that games launched on Game Pass need to have post-release monetization plans to make up for lost retail revenue. In today's Daily Fix:Hollow Knight: Silksong was finally released yesterday and broke just about every digital retailer that was selling it. It was even released in a DRM-free version on GOG.com, which of course was cracked by hackers. However, despite now being available to savvy gamers for absolutely free, gamers who have openly supported piracy are making an exception for Silksong, based on the good will developer Team Cherry has earned in the community (charging a more-than-reasonable $20, making it available without DRM, letting original Kickstarter backers get first dibs on the game, etc). In entertainment news, James Gunn wants you to watch Peacemaker Season 2 if you care about the Superman movie sequel, and Tom Holland is pestering his producers on the set of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

In today's Daily Fix:Hollow Knight: Silksong's release was just as big as many predicted. Not only did it break 500,000 concurrent players on Steam, it actually crashed the service, along with many other digital storefronts like Xbox and the Nintendo eShop. The $20 indie title is the sequel to the award-winning Hollow Knight and has been in development for more than six years. The PS6 handheld will reportedly be dockable and be cheaper than the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally X handheld (which does not yet have a price). In other news, Cyberpunk 2077's Switch 2 edition is selling well, and maybe unsurprisingly 75% of sales are of the game's physical release. And finally, Elden Ring Nightreign's ultra-hard Deep of Night mode has an official release date of September 11.

In today's Daily Fix:Lucasfilm dropped the first official image from the set of the latest Star Wars movie, Starfighter.
