Following our deep dive discussion of "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield," we're excited to be joined for a special interview by LOU ANTONIO ("Lokai"). A 50,000-year chase through the galaxy comes to a head on the Enterprise, when Commissioner Bele of the planet Cheron finally catches up with his rebellious opponent, Lokai. That puts Captain Kirk in the middle of a heated battle between two warring factions, the outcome of which could lead to the destruction of the Enterprise by Kirk's own hand. Whenever "Star Trek" has been praised for exploring social issues, "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" is usually the first episode that's referred to. Whether or not that makes it a great episode has been open to debate for decades. On one hand, "Battlefield" has often been criticized for being too heavy-handed in its approach, but a closer look actually reveals a variety of subtleties and more layers than it is often given credit for. It also features a superb performance from guest star Frank Gorshin as Bele, not to mention the standout scene where Kirk threatens to destroy the Enterprise. But without question, the most important aspect of "Battlefield" is its message about the absurdity of racism, which is just as timely and relevant now as it was in the late-1960s. To that extent, "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" actually does represent "Star Trek" at its very best. In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode Let That Be Your Last Battlefield which aired on January 10, 1969, and occurred on Star Date 5730.0 On its way to decontaminate the planet Arianis, the Enterprise intercepts a shuttlecraft stolen from Starbase 4 together with its pilot. The pilot is an alien who is solid white on his right side and solid black on his left. His name is Lokai, and he claims to be a political refugee from Cheron. Shortly thereafter, another alien is deposited on the bridge of the Enterprise by a spaceship just before it disintegrates. The new alien identifies himself as Bele, a police officer from Cheron who has been tracking Lokai for over 50,000 years. Bele is black on the right and white on the left and is outraged when Kirk sees no difference in them. Bele considers his coloration superior to Lokai and others "his kind." Lokai and Bele claim to be in the right, but Kirk stays above the argument, offering to drop them off at a Starbase. Bele attempts to force the Enterprise to Charon but returns control to Kirk when he threatens to self-destruct the Enterprise. After the Enterprise has decontaminated Arianis, Bele deactivates the destruct mode and forces the Enterprise to Cheron. Here, Bele and Lokai discover that all life there has been destroyed by years of racially-motivated fighting. Driven mad by the sight, Lokai and Bele both beam down to the surface, where they will continue to fight each other until one or both are dead. Let That Be Your Last Battlefield was the fifteenth episode of Star Trek's third season to air, with two intractable foes bringing their millenia old dispute to the Enterprise. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss the difference between a terrorist and a freedom fighter. After identifying a missing Starfleet shuttle, seemingly disabled and leaking oxygen, Kirk brings it aboard along with its enigmatic occupant, Lokai (Lou Antonio) of the planet Charon. Resolving to take him to Starbase 4 to face charges once their urgent humanitarian mission is complete, Kirk seems unamused by his visitor. Matters are complicated when a similar, but violently opposed, character named Bele (Frank Gorshin) joins them on the ship. He demands Lokai be handed over to him for punishment, but with his other guest seeking sanctuary, Kirk faces a tough decision. Let That Be Your Last Battlefield was directed by Jud Taylor, the third of his five stints in the chair. The teleplay was by Oliver Crawford, the second of his three scripts for the show coming some time after his first (for The Galileo Seven). In this episode Gerry and Iain considered how on the nose an analogy needs to be before it stops being an analogy. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. Let That Be Your Last Battlefield was released in 1969. It is 50 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on Paramount+ in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.

Standard Orbit: A Star Trek Original Series Podcast

Season Three Top Five. Season 3 of The Original Series is not anyone's favorite season. Fortunately, there's still some good in it. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike and Drew each choose 5 favorite episodes from Season 3, surprisingly with very little crossover. There are several good concepts mediocrely executed. We also have a quick news segment where we talk about the new writers for Star Trek 2016, Simon Pegg and Doug Jung and if we think they'll be a good fit for the franchise based on their past works.
