During the Second Battle of Champagne, the French and Germans engaged in a constant evolution of defensive and offensive technology, with the Germans thickening their lines with pillboxes, machine guns, and barbed wire in response to massive Allied artillery barrages. Lloyd emphasizes that the war's complexity forced a logical but painful shift in thinking as the dream of a grand "shattering breakthrough" faded into a grim reality of local gains. Amidst this carnage, figures like General Castelnau emerged, representing the human side of high command; a deeply religious man who personally suffered the loss of three sons, he serves as a counterpoint to the cliché of "cardboard cutout" generals. This narrative seeks to bring these individuals to life, showing them as humans wrestling with the desolation and horror of a war they could not easily win. (2)MONASH

Matt Slayer welcomes comedian Che Durena back to the bar for a conversation that starts filthy and stays that way. Che gets weirdly honest about his ritualistic relationship with content — the tab-hoarding, the specific routines, the whole unhinged process he's built around it — before comparing notes with Matt on their wildly different approaches to chasing dopamine. Che makes the case for moderation, treating content like any other vice (caffeine, sugar, alcohol) that he cycles off of so the highs actually hit again, while Matt argues for just taking the dopamine and living your truth. It somehow turns into a legitimately interesting back-and-forth about addiction, ritual, and burnout buried under all the chaos. Later the two completely nosedive into gaming, going way too deep on Marvel Rivals and Deadlock. They trade war stories about tilted teammates who refuse to communicate, one-trick players who single-handedly extend a loss for an extra hour, and the specific breed of Spider-Man main who thinks pulling you off a ledge counts as a personality. Slayer lays out his hard rule of never surrendering a match no matter how bad it looks, and the two go back and forth on why hero shooters live and die on call-outs and communication.       Loud, filthy, weirdly heartfelt in places — pour something strong and buckle up.   We are proud to be brought to you by BellFlask www.bellflask.com use promo code slayer20 for 20% off at checkout Cover your shame in our wares. Devin & James are back in the Den with another trip (and we mean TRIP) around the world with a look at STRANGE INTERNATIONAL WESTERNS. America may have cornered the market on the genre of its own invention, but artists from around the world have always found inspiration in Wild West mythologies, and we have picked out a few of the wildest, weirdest, and downright most bizarre Westerns from around the globe. We start in 1964 Czechoslovakia with Oldrich Lipsky's highly-stylized musical satire on classic cowboys and capitalism, LEMONADE JOE. We couldn't ignore Italy, so next we look at the dreamlike nightmare that is Giulio Questi's Spaghetti Western, DJANGO KILL... IF YOU LIVE, SHOOT!, featuring Tomas Milian. Then we come closer to home with Alejandro Jodorosky's midnight masterpiece from Mexico, EL TOPO. We jump back across the pond to discover an underappreciated 1970 gem from the New German Cinema Movement, Roland Klick's DEADLOCK (co-starring a very sweaty Mario Adorf). Next we jump continents, and decades, for 2007's wild and unwieldy SUKIYAKI WESTERN DJANGO, an ultra pop culture-infused oater from Japanese visionary, Takashi Miike. Finally, we take a ride with Kim Jee-woon's incredible South Korean Kimchi Western, THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE WEIRD, his 2008 tribute to Sergio Leone set in 1930's Manchuria that feels more like a true Western than a lot of modern Westerns. Saddle up and keep your wits. It's gonna get weird.

Today on The Gist, we analyze the Maine U.S. Senate race as Democrat Graham Plattner navigates a growing scandal while facing incumbent Susan Collins in a contest that tests party loyalties. Then, UC Davis law professor Aaron Tang discusses his PBS series, Breaking the Deadlock. Tang explains how his program uses high-stakes, fictionalized scenarios to force experts beyond their rehearsed talking points and toward genuine, civil discourse. In this episode of The Inner Gamer, we pull back the curtain on the widening gap between stylistic hype and mechanical execution. We kick things off with a raw review of Mixtape, balancing its immaculate stop-motion aesthetic and killer soundtrack against a disappointing lack of player agency and core gameplay systems. We then shift our focus to the reality of live-service development sustainability through the lens of Embark Studios, discussing why their recent dev schedule slowdown is a necessary reality check for titles like The Finals and ARC Raiders. In the second half of the show, we tackle the macro-economics of the industry, tearing into the chaotic fallout of PlayStation's aggressive live-service pivot. We connect the dots between executive misalignment, a $765 million Bungie write-down, the quiet commercial stagnation of Housemarque's Saros, and the emergency roadmap shifts reshaping Marathon. Finally, we head into the occult streets of the Interzone, bringing on a 500-hour veteran to deconstruct the exact mechanical hooks and high-level meta shifts that make Valve's Deadlock such a dominant, rewarding competitive obsession. Oil prices are rising as tensions in the Middle East continue to disrupt supply, with petrol in parts of the US now topping six dollars a gallon. We're joined by David Malpass, former US Treasury Under-Secretary under President Trump and former World Bank President, to discuss the global economic impact. And what does all this mean on the ground for small businesses already under pressure? Also, Nintendo shares fall after a price hike for its new Switch 2 console, as booming demand for AI drives up the cost of memory chips and pushes prices higher for gamers. We'll be asking what's behind the global scramble for semiconductors — and how far those costs could go. And Iran's saffron industry is being hit by the conflict — pushing up prices for one of the world's most expensive spices. Survivor AU: Redemption Episode 18 Recap w/ Matthew Haywood Australian Survivor: Redemption is back and host Mike Bloom is joined by Survivor UK winner Matthew Haywood for a deep dive into episode 18! This week brings a wild turn as Tribal Council teeters on a historic rock draw, with nearly every castaway convinced fate could decide the vote. Can Brooke's rapid-fire decisions—in immunity wins, idol hunting, and flipping at Tribal—change the game, or will old threats circle back? In this episode, the podcast breaks down the chaotic dynamics dominating the final week. Brooke emerges as a powerhouse by snatching both immunity and a half idol, then astonishes everyone by flipping against Simon on the re-vote. The hosts discuss how the returnees and newbies maneuver to avoid rocks, spotlighting risky deadlock strategies and the emotional cost—especially for Brooke, who faces Survivor as a parent for the first time and battles guilt and resolve. Laws tempts a women's alliance, setting the stage for potential power shifts, while Jackson's family video brings personal stakes to his game. Simon's exit marks both redemption and disappointment, as big resumes and pivotal moves creep toward the endgame. Brooke seizes the moment by flipping her vote, blindsiding Simon just before rocks are drawn—Mike Bloom and Matthew Haywood weigh in if her timing was too risky. Deadlock drama: Was going to rocks worth it for the “passengers,” or should they have flipped? The strategy unfolds with real risk and reward. Brooke's discovery of a half idol sparks new alliances and possible deals—who will find the other half, and will trust be just as split? Laws pitches a women's alliance, bringing new social reads and possible blindsides. Jackson's emotional confessional after the family reward opens up impact beyond gameplay. With alliances shifting and idols hidden in plain sight, will Brooke's gamble become her downfall, or does the Redbacks alliance finally take shape? Who's secretly controlling the vote, and whose resume will stand out at Final Tribal?
