Welcome back to my interview in progress with American painter Lisa Daly Kansas. Please note there's a point in the interview that I jump off the mic to quickly grab something to show Lisa in our Zoom call. For those of you listening in audio-only format, it's a framed photo of two paper checks I received in the mail. You'll understand the rest when you hear it.That said, don't forget the full video of this interview can be seen on the show notes page for either episode at passionaterpainterpodcast.com.And if you haven't yet listened to part 1, you might want to go back and listen to that first to hear Lisa's bio and learn about her origin as an artist, how she began selling her work, her social media strategy, and advice on art fairs. You can find it at passionatepainterpodcast.com/episode92.
Welcome back. Before I introduce my guest, I want to thank all of my listeners for your loyalty and encouragement. I love creating episodes to encourage you to chase down your art dreams and keep moving forward. That's why it's been a difficult decision to put the show on something of a sabbatical for the near future, to give me time to advance my own art career. Producing a quality show is extremely important to me and I enjoy it, but it takes a lot of time. I do plan to continue, though at a more spaced-apart pace. As I make progress on my own fine art journey, I'll produce shows to share my experiences with you in hopes of helping you along your own path.I appreciate each of you, and as a thank you, I will be giving away two scholarships to my complete masterclass, the portrait code on March 26th, 2023. Sign up for my email list to be automatically entered to win by going to the sidebar of passionatepainterpodcast.comThe course comes with modules on design, composition, anatomy, perspective, color theory, mixing skin tones, a full portrait demonstration, and so much more, including a seven-lesson module on confidence. Now, on to today's guest. I am happy to introduce you to an artist who is nothing short of a fireball. She began painting full-time in 2017 and in just a few short years seems to be everywhere in my adopted hometown of Escanaba and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. She's fearless and tenacious and upbeat. And in the short time, I've been here in Northern Michigan, I'm happy to say, she's also become a friend. When I asked Lisa Daly Kansas — known professionally as LDK — to come on the show, I explained that you, my beloved listeners, are in all stages of your art journeys. She's got great advice to share from her experience of being largely self-taught and getting her work into the world. And I know you'll find inspiration and encouragement from her take no prisoners, never say die energy, and optimism. This interview rand long, so I've broken it into two episodes for listening convenience.Part two is available now at passionatepainterpodcast.com/episode93.

"We’re not allowed to travel 20km until June 8th. Everything is just moving so slowly. It is very strict but I think it is the right thing to do, and it’s because we want to open up very slowly and we are looking at the other European countries and seeing how it reacts for them." Cependant elle reconnaît un relâchement dans le respect des règles sanitaires. "It’s becoming very sunny in Ireland as well, and I think that’s having an effect on people wanting to do things outside. In my perspective, I’ve noticed men are taking it a lot less seriously. I know the cases have gone down but there is still no vaccine, so I think it is good that people are loosening up and can enjoy their lives a bit more. But, I still think people should maintain their hand-washing and their social distancing because it is still scary." "The Sinn Féin party didn’t talk about Brexit at all, they just focused on housing, retirement, healthcare and things like that. To us, Brexit seems like a faraway problem, which is wrong. Now though we hope that there won’t be a strong border and there will be travel. Irish people are proud to be European, I am personally am very proud to be European and I just hope that no other country leaves the European Union. I think it’s very strong if we can all work together, especially in times of crisis, during coronavirus. I’m optimistic for Europe. I think they mean well, and they’re aiming for a better future and have high sustainable standards, but also to take on everyone’s consideration. Europe is obviously making decisions from Brussels, but to take each country’s perspective into consideration is very important. I’m very proud we are European and very happy that Ireland is staying within the European Union."

With funding from New Horizons, the Anna Templeton Centre is proud to present the We ❤ Craft Skill Sharing Series - 10 tours, presentations, and workshops that showcase craft in and around St. John's. The events will facilitate the sharing of craft skills between seniors and their community, including other seniors, youth, and the general population. The focus is not just on traditional Newfoundland and Labrador craft, but also adaptive and international craft and skills. There has been one event, a tour of the embroidery and silver of the Anglican Cathedral, where Joyce King gave a tour of the history and architecture of the Cathedral, Don Beaubier discussed the history and workmanship of some of the silver housed there, and Susan Furneaux discussed the embroidery on display, some of which was made locally by Bunty Severs. Over November they will host a panel at the Quidi Vidi Village Plantation where three generations of knitters will demonstrate some methods for tricky and difficult techniques, and will take audience questions. At the end of November they will have three workshop on Iris folding, a Dutch technique of using scraps of paper, and because it is hosted by Sheila Ford, a quilter, scraps of fabric, to create beautiful images on cards. Dr. Lisa Daly is the project organizer for We ❤ Craft, working with a board of women who are passionate about crafting. Lisa is also a member of the Heritage NL board, and has been working in heritage and tourism for almost two decades.

Blog Post: https://insideoutsidemichiana.blogspot.com/2018/10/nature-play-fun-creating-temporary-and.html Quote: “Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, water bugs, tadpoles, frogs, mud turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, chestnuts, trees to climb. Brooks to wade, water lilies, woodchucks, bats, bees, butterflies, various animals to pet, hayfields, pinecones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets. And any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of education.” — Luther Burbank (American horticulturalist and botanist, 1849 – 1926) Additional Resources: Tinkergarten activities: https://tinkergarten.com/activities Interested in becoming a leader? Is instruction really necessary in schools? That's just one of the many intriguing questions we dive into in our latest podcast with our friend, mentor, and educational leader, Gary Stager, in a conversation that will have you thinking hard (once again) about teaching and learning in the modern world. Gary’s focus is on the nature of teaching, and he says that since the mid-80’s, we have removed the art of teaching from teacher training, and now we have a generation of teachers who don’t know how to teach. To rectify this, we need to create a productive context for learning and “bridge the gap.” We do that by creating interesting, relevant projects instead of “reckless instruction.” Gary believes that deep, meaningful learning is often accompanied by obsession, and his focus is on answering the question: How can we create experiences and context in classrooms where kids can discover things they don’t know they love? This is done by implementing good projects that spur creativity, ownership, and relevance. "A good project can replace a great deal of reckless instruction." - Gary Stager Through his professional learning conference Constructing Modern Knowledge (CMK), Gary has teachers put on their “learner hats” and learn how to create obsession, since, he says, very few of us have experienced what greatness looks like. In our conversation, Gary explains why he started CMK, what he wants to accomplish, and what he wants for educators. He shows teachers that the future of education can be much brighter. He also explains why he wants to spend more time advocating for arts education and why he thinks there is great value in a new focus and NOT committing to a curriculum. So, I got totally sick with bronchitis! I am thankfully on the mend, but I haven't had a voice suitable for radio at all… Which means I'm extra-happy to bring you this great conversation, a listener favorite from 2017. Early childhood education professors Lisa Daly and Miriam Beloglovsky are in the midst of writing a series of books called Loose Parts, extremely practical books about structuring a kid's environment to eliminate lots of problems, including temper tantrums! But, I bet that's not how they would describe it… Because while we are eliminating the problems, we are fostering really cool stuff in our children – and THAT is what Loose Parts is really about. Key links at weturnedoutokay.com/212 – and thank you so much for listening : )
Rarely am I speechless – in life or podcasting – but today's guests took my breath away with their observations of real young adults who grew up without open-ended play in their lives. Lisa Daly and Miriam Beloglovsky, authors and professors, know a lot about how easy it is for a child growing up today to have zero practical knowledge. It's because their lives were spent preparing for, and taking, tests. Now as adults, these young people score really well on tests… But cannot accomplish simple tasks such as using screwdriver. Imagine not having the mechanical knowledge to use a screwdriver! Thankfully, Daly and Beloglovsky spend their days teaching tomorrow's teachers, and have a wonderful go-around for this burgeoning problem. And, it is burgeoning – more and more young people leave high school without any practical knowledge, move out into the world looking really well-prepared on paper, but lacking competence and confidence in many key areas of their lives. Go to weturnedoutokay.com/152 for show notes and key links to this mind-blowing conversation with two thoughtful, engaged people!
