In one of the most powerful episodes of The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast to date, Ginny Yurich welcomes back Angela Hanscom—pediatric occupational therapist, author of Balanced and Barefoot, and founder of TimberNook—for her fifth and most stirring conversation yet. Angela unpacks the developmental consequences of our modern restrictions on movement—from limited recess to screen-heavy lifestyles—and why so many kids today are falling out of chairs, struggling with emotional regulation, and losing their sense of joy. This episode is a wake-up call for parents, educators, and policymakers. Hanscom explains why simple, vigorous play—rolling, spinning, climbing, swinging—is not optional, but essential for neurological development, sensory integration, and future learning. With clarity, evidence, and compassion, she makes the case that three (or more!) hours of outdoor movement daily isn't just ideal—it's developmental oxygen. Angela Hanscom, pediatric occupational therapist and founder of TimberNook, returns for her fourth appearance on The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast—and this conversation is one of her most powerful yet. Angela and Ginny Yurich dig into the growing epidemic of play deprivation and how it's silently impacting children's physical, social, and neurological development. With insights from Angela's groundbreaking work around the world, they explore how nature offers the richest sensory experiences, why kids need to get messy, and how the freedom to take risks outdoors transforms confidence and builds real-life resilience. Together, they also unpack why adults must step back to allow authentic, independent play to flourish. From muddy puddles to barefoot balance, to crawling babies and screen-addicted teens, this episode paints a compelling picture of the simple—but urgent—need for outdoor childhood. Whether you're a parent, educator, or someone who just wants better for the next generation, this episode offers both practical wisdom and a much-needed rallying cry. ** Get your copy of Balanced and Barefoot here Learn more about TimberNook and how you can get involved here Learn more about your ad choices. IntroductionWelcome to today's special episode! We are thrilled to host Angela Hanscom, the esteemed author of Balanced and Barefoot. This LIVE Q&A event was inspired by our insightful discussions during the book club within the CIRCLE Membership. After diving deep into Angela's valuable insights, our members were inspired to initiate separate discussion groups with parents at their schools. This excitement ultimately led us to invite Angela to join us for this engaging session.Angela J. Hanscom is a pediatric occupational therapist and founder of TimberNook—an award-winning developmental and nature-based program that has gained international popularity. She is the author of Balanced and Barefoot: How Unrestricted Outdoor Play Makes for Strong, Confident, and Capable Children. Hanscom is also a frequent contributor to The Washington Post and in 2019 won the Small Business of the Year Award for the State of New Hampshire. Keynote: The Decline of Outdoor Play – And the Rise in Sensory Issues (90 minutes)As we continue to decrease children's time and space to move and play outdoors, we are seeing a simultaneous rise in the number of children that are presenting with sensory and motor deficits. At the same time, classroom teachers are observing more and more children having trouble with attention, falling out of their seats in school, increased clumsiness, and even aggressiveness with games like tag on the playground. So, how can we reverse this alarming trend of sensory and motor issues in children? How can we ensure that children are fully engaging their body, mind, and all of their senses?Using the same philosophy that lies at the heart of her popular TimberNook program—that nature is the ultimate sensory experience, and that psychological and physical health improves for children when they spend time outside on a regular basis—Angela Hanscom offers several strategies to help children thrive in outdoor environments using a therapeutic approach to nature play. Have you heard? I have just announced our second Outdoor Classroom's CIRCLE Book Club selection! It's Balanced and Barefoot: How Unrestricted Outdoor Play Makes for Strong, Confident, and Capable Children by Angela Hanscom.Book description: Today's kids have adopted sedentary lifestyles filled with television, video games, and computer screens. But more and more, studies show that children need "rough and tumble" outdoor play in order to develop their sensory, motor, and executive functions. Disturbingly, a lack of movement has been shown to lead to a number of health and cognitive difficulties, such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), emotion regulation and sensory processing issues, and aggressiveness at school recess break. So, how can you ensure your child is fully engaging their body, mind, and all of their senses?Using the same philosophy that lies at the heart of her popular TimberNook program - that nature is the ultimate sensory experience, and that psychological and physical health improves for children when they spend time outside on a regular basis - author Angela J. Hanscom offers several strategies to help your child thrive, even if you live in an urban environment. With this book, you'll discover little things you can do anytime, anywhere to help your kids achieve the movement they need to be happy and healthy in mind, body, and spirit.Come join us in our CIRCLE Community Roundtable for a lively discussion about this book. Could this be our most controversial episode yet?! Perhaps! We recently saw a post by a very popular parenting expert about indoor vs. outdoor play that caused such a strong reaction from us both, we knew we wanted to talk about the topic here on the podcast. We love @busytoddler, and her tips for entertaining little kids were such a lifeline for us during early COVID days (rice bin anyone?). But a recent post that Susie shared about indoor vs. outdoor play really got us thinking about and reflecting on outdoor play and the role it plays in our lives. This week we share our thoughts! Other episodes we mentioned in this episode:  Ep 7: Remove the walls, with Jane Pilskalnietis, outdoor play specialist Ep 45: Why movement and outdoor play are essential to your kid's development, with Angela Hanscom, pediatric occupational therapist Ep 52: Why getting outside is good for your health, with Dr. Melissa Lem, family physician and director of Canada's national nature prescription program  Ep 66: Outdoor play (with the correct shoes) is crucial for your kid's growing body, with Maegan Mak, paediatric physiotherapist at Playworks Physio  Follow us on Instagram and send us a DM to let us know what you thought of this episode: @getoutsidewithkids Check out our website for our favourite gear to get outside

SUMMARY Pediatric occupational therapist Angela Hanscom, author of “Balanced and Barefoot,” urges parents, teachers, and administrators to embrace “free play” for children of all ages. Today, without merry-go-rounds and teeter-totters, time to roll down hills and get dirty, these modern kids are experiencing an alarming increase in sensory and emotional disorders. But Hanscom, comes to their rescue with “Balanced and Barefoot,” a book full of compelling reasons to encourage unrestrained outdoor play and movement. Not only is free play more fun, she argues, but, without it, cognitive and physical development are stunted. As a mother and therapist, Angela Hanscom observed a steep decline in sensory-motor development among her children’s peers. So, she started TimberNook as a vehicle to get children outdoors where they could enjoy the rich sensory experiences nature offers. What began as a backyard experiment has now grown into a movement to inspire, restore, and challenge little minds and bodies in communities across the world.  KEY TERMS “Active free play”- being fully engrossed with our whole body in an experience “Deep play” – play that involves purpose and teaches social skills “Vestibular sense” – sense of balance controlled by little hairs in our inner ear; helps us effectively navigate and move around our environment “Proprioception” – the ability to sense what different parts of our body are doing without even looking at them; awareness of where our body is in space “Loose parts” – multi-purpose play items (e.g., a stick, planks, baskets) KEY POINTS Research shows kids are in a seated position for about 9 hrs/day. Spinning helps kids to integrate all their senses and to organize their brains. Playgrounds have morphed into colorful, very safe, low-to-the-ground, low-risk places for play easily mastered by age four or five. The unpredictability of outdoors challenges and develops all the senses. Constantly keeping a baby upright endangers a child, including creating more ear infections. QUOTES FROM HANSCOM "Active free play outdoors is a kind of play that promotes healthy sensory and motor development in children. It is the antidote to your child spending hours sitting indoors and staring at screens, and to you as a parent being too busy and overscheduled with kid activities to enjoy parenting. The outdoors awakens and rejuvenates the mind and engages all the senses." "In nature, children learn to take risks, overcome fears, make new friends, regulate emotions, and create imaginary worlds. "Active free play--particularly in the outdoors--is absolutely the most beneficial gift we as parents, teachers, and caregivers can bestow on our children to ensure healthy bodies, creative minds academic success, emotional stability, and strong social skills."   "Having the ability to play away from the adult world opens up many opportunities and feelings of freedom." "When children play outdoors, they are naturally motivated to move--strengthening their muscles with each move, each step, and every encounter with nature." 128: How to Get Your Kids to Play Outside & Why It Matters // Angela Hanscom

3 in 30 Takeaways for Moms

Play Episode Listen Later May 4, 2020 33:08

Over three years ago, long before I’d started 3 in 30 and really headed down the path of diving into parent education resources, I attended a presentation put on by my son Noah’s kindergarten about the importance of outdoor play for kids.  Like most moms, I already believed outdoor play was a good idea for my kids and tried to prioritize it when I could, but the presentation that night honestly blew me away. The presenter was a pediatric occupational therapist named Angela Hanscom (https://www.timbernook.com/) who explained in detail the ways that different systems of the body develop when kids are allowed to play and adventure outside--to run and jump and carry stuff and climb. She went on to present alarming data on how this generation of children is struggling much more than children in the past with gross and fine motor skills and other essential development of the body’s systems simply because they aren’t playing outdoors as much. I left the presentation feeling determined to make outside play a more central part of our family’s culture, and though we haven’t always been great about this in the years since, her presentation has always stayed with me--and whenever I start to feel like it’s just too hard to convince my kids to go outside and play, I think about Angela’s work and recommit to making it happen. I am so thrilled to have Angela Hanscom on 3 in 30 today to give this community a taste of the presentation that has stayed with me for all these years. 3 Takeaways for Helping Your Kids Play Outdoors 1) Make "loose parts" available to them. Remember, these are materials that can be used in multiple ways, such as sticks, sheets, boards, tires, and buckets. 2) Invite children over to play for the day, not just for a few hours. SUMMARY Pediatric occupational therapist Angela Hanscom, author of “Balanced and Barefoot,” urges parents, teachers, and administrators to embrace “active free play" to benefit children of all ages. Furthermore, Hanscom believes "unrestricted outdoor play makes for strong, confident, and capable children."  As a young mother and therapist, Angela Hanscom observed a steep decline in sensory-motor development among her children’s peers. So, she started TimberNook as a vehicle to get children outdoors where they could be balanced and barefoot, enjoying the rich sensory experiences nature offers. What began as a backyard experiment has now grown into a movement to inspire, restore, and challenge little minds and bodies in communities across the world.   KEY TERMS “Active free play”- being fully engrossed in whole-body experiences  “Deep play” – play that involves purpose and teaches social skills “Vestibular sense” – a sense of balance controlled by little hairs in our inner ear; helps us effectively navigate and move around our environment “Proprioception” – the ability to sense what different parts of our body are doing without even looking at them; awareness of where our body is in space “Loose parts” – multi-purpose play items (e.g., sticks, planks, empty baskets) KEY POINTS Research shows kids are in a seated position for about 9 hrs/day. "Active free play--particularly in the outdoors--is absolutely the most beneficial gift we as parents, teachers, and caregivers can bestow on our children to ensure healthy bodies, creative minds academic success, emotional stability, and strong social skills."   "Having the ability to play away from the adult world opens up many opportunities and feelings of freedom."  "When children play outdoors, they are naturally motivated to move--strengthening their muscles with each move, each step, and every encounter with nature."  BUY Balanced and Barefoot: How Unrestricted Outdoor Play Makes for Strong, Confident, and Capable Children  RECOMMENDATION Check out the Playgroundology website and blog. Do your kids spend as much time playing outside as you did when you were young? According to experts, probably not. It’s rare these days for kids to spend entire afternoons rolling down hills, climbing trees, or enjoying lengthy recesses at school where they swing too high and push merry-go-rounds too fast. Instead, these once-classic childhood activities have been replaced by adult-supervised ones, such as organized sports, accelerated academics, and of course, screen time. We’ve done this, of course, because we largely believe that kids are safer this way. But could our attempts to keep kids out of harm’s way be hindering their development? Tune in as Exceptional Parenting Podcast host, Stefanie Boucher, speaks with pediatric occupational therapist, international speaker, Timbernook founder, and author Angela Hanscom about how unrestrained physical movement and outdoor play are vital for your child’s cognitive and physical development - and why a lack of it may be (at least partly) to blame for today’s epidemic levels of attention deficits, as well as sensory and emotional disorders.
