In this episode, we dive deep into the power of play and why it matters at every stage of childhood! Whether you're homeschooling or just juggling parenting, incorporating play can ignite a lifelong love of learning and create magical moments of discovery. From mealworm mazes to Viking bread, we explore how playful learning leads to unexpected adventures and lasting knowledge. So, gather your kids, embrace the fun, and let's make learning an exciting journey together! Tune in now and discover practical tips and heartwarming stories that will inspire you to add more play into your routine. Key Takeaways: Importance of Play: Play is crucial at all stages of development, not just early childhood. It supports critical thinking skills, creativity, problem-solving, and social and emotional development, which are essential for both neurotypical and neurodivergent children. Incorporating Play into Homeschooling: Play should be integrated into homeschooling to make learning enjoyable and effective. This can range from using building blocks and sensory bins for younger children to strategy games and creative projects for older kids. Adaptation of Play with Age: Play evolves as children grow. For young children, it might involve sensory play and role-playing. For older kids and teens, it can include activities like strategy games, creative hobbies, and physical activities. Educational Benefits of Play: Research indicates that playful learning is more effective than passive instruction. It allows kids to retain more information through hands-on, engaging activities. Social and Emotional Learning: Play enhances emotional intelligence and social skills. It helps children manage emotions, develop empathy, and understand different perspectives, which is especially beneficial for neurodivergent children. Unstructured vs. Structured Play: Both unstructured play (imaginative play, free play) and structured play (board games, organized sports) have unique educational benefits. Unstructured play fosters creativity and imagination, while structured play helps reinforce concepts and critical thinking. Play as a Gateway for Neurodivergent Kids: Playful learning can help neurodivergent children grasp difficult concepts more easily. For instance, kids with dyslexia might benefit from interactive word games, while children with dysgraphia could engage in playful handwriting exercises. Family Bonding through Play: Engaging in playful activities as a family strengthens bonds and creates lasting memories. This could be through family game nights, outdoor adventures, or creative projects done together. Resilience and Perseverance: Embracing play, even when it deviates from expectations, models resilience and perseverance for children. It demonstrates that it's okay to enjoy the learning process and adapt to different situations. Continual Offering of Play: For children who resist play, it's important to keep offering and introducing new playful activities. Over time, they may find something that resonates with them, making learning more engaging and enjoyable. Here's a challenge for you -- reflect on your week's learning adventures and share them on social media (don't forget to tag us!) or with us directly through the Learner's Lab. There is not much I enjoy more than sitting down with one of the innovative thinkers in compliance, Carsten Tams to find out what is on his mind regarding compliance. Tom Fox recently had the opportunity to do so on the topic of making compliance training memorable. Over this short, five-part series, we will introduce the problem and challenges and then provide you with four proven strategies for success in your compliance training. In this concluding Episode 5, we discuss how making ethics and compliance training playful can enhance learning. Our learning brain likes games. When people shift into a playful state of mind, they immerse themselves more deeply into the learning activity. Their mood brightens, their mind opens up, and they are intensely focused and more receptive to new information. Playful learning supports a deeper understanding of concepts, better recall of knowledge, and better transfer of skills to novel problems. They explore the concept of the ‘Magic Circle' in gaming, which engenders an immersive, playful state of mind that fosters openness and engagement. By employing game-based learning experiences like the ‘Ethics Kit Find Your Path' card game, the discussion showcases how ethical scenarios can be addressed in an interactive, fun way. Through the use of commitment, action, and resource cards, employees engage in collaborative problem-solving related to their organization's ethical dilemmas. The episode emphasizes the importance of experiential, social, and strength-based learning, arguing that an engaging user experience (UX) in training not only makes learning enjoyable but also more effective in reinforcing ethical behaviors within organizations. In this episode of the Learning While Working Podcast, Terry Pearce, the founder of Unfold Play, joins the show for a discussion on engaging learning through play. Terry shares strategies for game-based learning and the six levers that make games effective for learning. He also gives examples of how putting learners at the centre of the learning experience can transform seemingly dry content into engaging and effective learning activities.About Terry PearceTerry Pearce founded Untold Play to bring together his twin passions of learning design and games. Terry leverages the power of games and gamification in learning, and he regularly weaves the principles of game-based learning into the learning experiences he creates. He has won awards, through the London NHS Modernisation Agency, Reed Learning and the Healthcare People Management Association, for the services I deliver to clients, including HSBC, Imperial College Hospital, Thames Water and Zurich.Key takeaways:Putting learners at the centre: Games engage learners by making them the protagonists, setting open challenges, letting them explore, embracing failure, offering meaningful choices, and nudging them towards desired behaviours. This shift places the focus on the learner and encourages active participation in the learning process.Debriefing for reflection: Terry stressed the significance of debriefing in learning experiences. The "What happened, So what, Now what" framework allows learners to process their experiences, make generalisations, and consider behavioural changes as they apply their learnings to real-world scenarios.Transform Deck: Terry introduced the Transform Deck of learning design cards, which is a valuable tool for creating engaging, learner-centred activities. The deck serves as a point of inspiration for turning content into interactive, experiential learning experiences, providing a spectrum of options beyond traditional games and gamification.Segmented time stamps:(00:00) Introduction(04:56) Games thrive on failure, meaningful choices and nudges(09:18) Embrace play and games for healthy benefits(11:08) Creating engaging learning experiences through interactive games(14:54) Virtual escape room featuring games-based learning(18:41) Dice game simulates cultural immersion and adaptation(22:15) Deck of cards for inspiring learner-focused activities(25:12) Align objectives, culture, and methods for learningLinks from the podcast:Connect with Terry on LinkedInVisit Terry's WebsiteCheck out The Transform DeckRead more about The Six Levers

Hey Premium-ster! I totally love you for the fact that you're a subscriber and believer in what we are doing at This is HCD! You're getting this episode first... Play. Something we all did as children, but as we grow older, it's less and less common to see, and even more so within the workplace. Play is often seen as the opposite of work. But what about if your job was to help unlock the potential, and you encourage play to do that in the workplace? Well, earlier this year, Adam Lawrence and Marcos Edgar Hormess, who I've worked with for many years, mentioned to me about a new play kit that they were involved in creating with Playmobil Pro. And I bought the full pro kit myself out of my own money. So this isn't an advert. I paid for this kit myself. But once I got it, I hit a few stumbling blocks. And I wasn't entirely sure how to weave it into my sessions or my workshops with my clients. Now, Frank, the MD of PlayMobile Pro, who I spoke to earlier in this year on the podcast, was awesome and connected me with today's guest, Juan Prego. Now, on the topic of play, I've been a big fan of Miro for many, many years. It's the tool of choice for my online workshops. And they've kindly sponsored today's episode. And the sessions and learning experience that I provide for my clients are always fun. And I put this down to the utilizing of Miro's fun features inside their tool. And I can really curate whatever experience I want to have within my canvases. Now Miro are helping us out. By sponsoring this episode, as I said, so if you want to show some love, why not check out what they've been doing by visiting Miro. com forward slash podcast, or by clicking the link in the description or show notes, depending on where you're listening or watching this episode. Now, if you are listening, did you know that you can watch this episode on our YouTube channel? People are absolutely loving the fact that they can see the guests chat about things. So be sure to subscribe if you can get a chance and check out our YouTube channel. Back to Juan. He's produced an awesome book, Play Like a Pro, that is due out later this year in 2023 in English. And I have a copy of it and it's awesome. It's great to hear Juan though in this episode talk about how he recommends weaving methods like Playmobil Pro into his sessions. Is it as simple as just cutting and pasting? And also cover off his thoughts regarding Playmobil Pro versus LEGO Serious Play etc. There's a debate in the community on which is best. Not much of a debate anyway. Let's jump straight in.

In this episode with Saira Remtulla, we discuss the benefits of learning through play and music – from babies to adults and everyone in-between! An Ontario Certified Teacher of 15 years with the Toronto District School Board, Saira is passionate and devoted to children and teaching. As the Founder of ConnectED Start, Saira has developed a fun-filled program tailored to children ages zero-months to 5 years, which provides them the foundational tools necessary to achieve success in their educational journey. Making 'connections' with their caregivers, their surroundings, and each other are the keys to success! Saira has a beautiful energy and enthusiasm for setting your kiddos up for success in the early years through high impact connections with caregivers using music and rhyme. In our conversation, Saira shares how personal connections and engaging learning experiences are critical to building the brain's neural connections in these early years. As well, she talks about the importance of developing confidence in our kids and creating safe spaces to make mistakes - as this is where some of the greatest learning happens! Listen in as we talk about: How ConnectED Start came to be. Saira shares the events that led to creating her company and programs. Why building strong, positive connections is so important. Saira talks about the importance of building those strong and positive connections and how it impacts children in a significant way. The power in setting high expectations for our kids. Do you have high expectations of your kids? Saira explains why that isn't always a bad thing and how it can impact our kids in a positive way. The benefits of using rhymes, music and play for learners of all ages. Saira talks about how using a combination of these three learning techniques benefits kids, teens and adults alike in their learning journey. To Saira's excitement, they agreed, and that's how ConnectED Start was born. After its launch, the company continued to snowball and brought forth many new opportunities for learning, play and development. WHY BUILDING STRONG, POSITIVE CONNECTIONS IS SO IMPORTANT “We have to feel comfortable being uncomfortable because that's when we're growing the most.” Making connections and building a strong, positive connection is crucial right from the get-go, right from birth. In Saira's opinion, it's important for caregivers and parents to build strong connections with their babies. She suggests doing this through music, through play, answering when they try to talk to you, etc. This leads to a positive wellbeing and strong mental health, even in adulthood. Research shows that when you build that positive connection, you create a feeling of safety and comfort. Then, kids are more likely to make mistakes and feel confident that they can resolve them. This eventually leads to building confidence and resilience as an adult navigating life's challenges. THE POWER IN SETTING HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR OUR KIDS It's important to set high expectations for our kids because they can actually do the things you're wanting them to do. Setting high expectations allows new connections within the brain pathways, and builds that relationship between brain cells.
