fWotD Episode 2814: William Robinson Brown Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 17 January 2025 is William Robinson Brown.William Robinson "W. R." Brown (January 17, 1875 – August 4, 1955) was an American corporate officer of the Brown Company of Berlin, New Hampshire. He was also an influential Arabian horse breeder, the founder and owner of the Maynesboro Stud, and an authority on Arabian horses. After graduating from Williams College, Brown joined the family corporation, then known as the Berlin Mills Company, and became manager of the Woods Products Division, overseeing the company's woodlands and logging operations. He became an early advocate for sustainable forest management practices, was a member of the New Hampshire Forestry Commission from 1909 until 1952, and served on the boards of several forestry organizations. As chair of the Forestry Commission, Brown helped send sawmills to Europe during World War I to assist the war effort. He was influenced by the Progressive movement, instituting employee benefits such as company-sponsored care for injured workers that predated modern workers' compensation laws. A Republican, he served as a presidential elector for New Hampshire in 1924.Brown founded the Maynesboro Stud in 1912 with foundation bloodstock from some of the most notable American breeders of Arabian horses. He looked abroad for additional horses, particularly from the Crabbet Arabian Stud, and imported Arabian horses from England, France and Egypt. At its peak, Maynesboro was the largest Arabian horse breeding operation in the United States. In 1929, he wrote The Horse of the Desert, still considered an authoritative work on the Arabian breed. He served as President of the Arabian Horse Club of America from 1918 until 1939. Brown was a remount agent and had a special interest in promoting the use of Arabian horses by the U. S. Army Remount Service. To prove the abilities of Arabians, he organized and participated in a number of endurance races of up to 300 miles (480 km), which his horses won three times, retiring the U. S. Mounted Service Cup. This accomplishment occurred even though The Jockey Club donated $50,000 to the U. S. Army to buy Thoroughbreds that tried but failed to beat the Arabians. Brown's legacy as a horse breeder was significant. Today, the term "CMK", meaning "Crabbet/Maynesboro/Kellogg" is a label for specific lines of "Domestic" or "American-bred" Arabian horses, many of which descend from Brown's breeding program. In 2012, the Berlin and Coös County Historical Society held a 100th anniversary celebration of the stud's founding.Although Brown family members sold personal assets to keep the Brown Company afloat during the Great Depression, including Brown's dispersal of his herd of Arabian horses in 1933, the business went into receivership in 1934. Brown remained in charge of the Woods Division through the company's second bankruptcy filing in 1941. He retired from the company in 1943 and died of cancer in 1955. His final book, Our Forest Heritage, was published posthumously, and his innovations in forest management became industry standards. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Friday, 17 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see William Robinson Brown on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Geraint.

I throughly enjoyed talking with one of my mentors, author, educator, maker, programmer, musician Gary Stager. I have been following Gary for well over two decades, so it is such a treat to talk with him again and be able to ask him anything. We chatted about tennis, music, integration of technology, his early memories of programming logo. Plus all the amazing educators he brings to his summer conference Constructing Modern Knowledge, webinars he's hosted, and the abundance of workshops he has brought to the world. If you are looking for some life changing professional development over the summer and a wail of a good time go to CMK 2023. It will inspire change in your practice regardless of the age or subject you teach. For our New Years Resolution, we decided to change some of our show. First, we have cut the lightning round in favor of our new Cloud Journey series, where we will talk about core cloud concepts over several episodes. We are also covering only the larger stories from the cloud providers, we still want to provide you with all of the news, so you'll find it in the show notes; if you enjoy the aggregation, subscribe to our newsletter to get the show notes to get your mailbox weekly. Share your feedback through our website or join our slack team. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.12.08.519572v1?rss=1 Authors: Ippolito, D., Glauser, D. A. Abstract: Nociceptive habituation is a conserved process through which pain-sensitivity threshold is adjusted based on past sensory experience and which may be dysregulated in human chronic pain conditions. Noxious heat habituation in C. elegans involves the nuclear translocation of CaM kinase-1 (CMK-1) in the FLP thermo-nociceptors neurons, causing reduced animal heat sensitivity and avoidance responses. The phosphorylation of CMK-1 on T179 by CaM kinase kinase-1 (CKK-1) is required for nuclear entry. Recently, we identified a specific Nuclear Export Sequence (NES) required to maintain CMK-1 in the cytoplasm at rest (20 {degrees}C) and showed that Ca2+/CaM binding is sufficient to enhance CMK-1 affinity for IMA-3 via a specific Nuclear Localization Signal (NLS) in order to promote nuclear entry after persistent heat stimulation (90 min at 28{degrees}C) (Ippolito et al., 2021). Here, we identified additional functional NES and NLS on CMK-1, whose activity can counteract previously identified elements. Furthermore, we clarify the relationship between the CaM-binding-dependent and T179-dependent effects. T179 phosphorylation can promotes nuclear entry both downstream of CaM-binding and as part of an independent/parallel pathway. Moreover, T179 phosphorylation can also produce the opposite effect by promoting nuclear export. Taken together, our studies show that multiple calcium-dependent regulatory mechanisms converge to bias the activity pattern across a network of NES/NLS elements, in order to activate CMK-1 nucleo-cytoplasmic shuttling, change its localization equilibrium and actuate stimulation-dependent nociceptive plasticity.

In this week's episode, Tom talks with Music Educator Katie Traxler and Mae Miller, ACO Director of Education and the inspiration, twenty-three years ago, for Tom to create ACO's Classical Music for Kids. The three discuss kids' enthusiastic reaction to CMK school visits; Katie has welcomed CMK to her school for eleven years. They also discuss children's visceral reactions, a CMK favorite, Peter and the Wolf, and ACO's upcoming film of the work, which adds to the cast of musicians and two professional mimes. Note: the film will be featured on the PBS Learning Channel – allowing children around the world to enjoy and be inspired by this great Prokofiev children's classic.

That remdesivir study has finally been published - what does it say and is it as independant as claimed. Also, as the world's focus turned to covid, so have researchers - and they've produced over 15000 papers. How can we sift through the flood of research and know what's any good? (2.30) Helen Macdonald talks to Elizabeth Loder about the volume of research we're seeing, and why journals and peer reviewers are struggling to check it all. (8.15) The study on remdesivir has been published - the trial was stopped early, and the primary outcome switched - we talk about how that increases uncertainty over the results, and could actually delay the treatment. (26.50) We hear from a couple fo readers who wanted to correct us about averages, means, medians. For over 30 years, Gary Stager has been at the forefront of those arguing for a more constructionist approach to learning. In this podcast, he discusses the power and importance of letting students experience learning by doing in every interaction with school. Gary has been greatly influenced by the work of Jean Piaget, Seymour Papert, and many others. His keynotes and presentations around the world continually push people's thinking about the ways in which children and adults learn most powerfully and deeply. Don't forget to check out Gary's Constructing Modern Knowledge Summer Institute which will be held July 16-19 in Manchester, NH. Now in its 12th year, CMK is a unique, deep-dive into learning unlike any other featuring amazing speakers and thought-provoking ideas for classroom practice. In this exciting conclusion of my interview with founder of DIVIN3KINGDOM, Choong Man, Kim, CMK gets personal and shares his struggles with addiction, and depression. God frequently uses those who have gone through the valley of death so that we can be ambassadors for his cause. The saying goes, "follow the General with most scars!" We all have collected our fair share of medals, and badges of honor, but what we do with them is key. CMK introduces his team, many whom have also gone through their own trials and tribulations. But together, they preach the Gospel through Christian hip hop, dance, and the spoken word to those in need. (Check out their biographies in part one's show notes) CMK reminds us that it's easy to dine with those who look just like us. And many times, that's what we do. But as Jesus said in the Gospels, we should dine with those who look nothing like us. It's a sober reminder that we should be open to connect with those who are hurting and seeking. And you can help CMK and crew at www.divin3kingdom.org by donating to the cause and the advancement of God's Kingdom!
In part one of my interview with Choong Man Kim, Founder of Divine Kingdom (www.divin3kingdom.org), we chat candidly about his beginnings, upbringing, along with his struggles early in life. CMK like many had his share of battles during childhood but he quickly found a gift in rhyme and wit. Quick on his feet, and light on his toes, CMK was natural at battle rapping. CMK was fierce in competition and would earn the respect of his friends and fellow battle rappers; soon, though, he discovered that in the heat of battle words can hurt. God impressed upon CMK that he can use that same gift for good. How? Through certain mentors in his high school and college days, he discovered that he can use his talent for the glory of God. After graduating from the prestigious Gateway Seminary earning his M. Div, CMK was led to rap for God. He launched Divine Kingdom, a creative Christian events ministry. CMK, and his team travel the Bay Area and afar to preach the Word of God to the needy through music, rhyme, and impressive production. Each of his team members are blessed in their own right as creatives. But together, they form a core of artists, videographers, DJs, and Wordsmiths that touch people's hearts. Debbie Ann Kim- http://www.divin3kingdom.org/koaladeb David Sundmand - http://www.divin3kingdom.org/liftid DJ Elyon - http://www.divin3kingdom.org/elyon Sean Choi - http://www.divin3kingdom.org/thejoonshk It's about connecting with people, and connecting with them on their turf. Words are truly in the power of the tongue, and brother CMK and his multi-faceted team take their gifts to the trenches and front lines to save souls!
Is instruction really necessary in schools? That's just one of the many intriguing questions we dive into in our latest podcast with our friend, mentor, and educational leader, Gary Stager, in a conversation that will have you thinking hard (once again) about teaching and learning in the modern world. Gary’s focus is on the nature of teaching, and he says that since the mid-80’s, we have removed the art of teaching from teacher training, and now we have a generation of teachers who don’t know how to teach. To rectify this, we need to create a productive context for learning and “bridge the gap.” We do that by creating interesting, relevant projects instead of “reckless instruction.” Gary believes that deep, meaningful learning is often accompanied by obsession, and his focus is on answering the question: How can we create experiences and context in classrooms where kids can discover things they don’t know they love? This is done by implementing good projects that spur creativity, ownership, and relevance. "A good project can replace a great deal of reckless instruction." - Gary Stager Through his professional learning conference Constructing Modern Knowledge (CMK), Gary has teachers put on their “learner hats” and learn how to create obsession, since, he says, very few of us have experienced what greatness looks like. In our conversation, Gary explains why he started CMK, what he wants to accomplish, and what he wants for educators. He shows teachers that the future of education can be much brighter. He also explains why he wants to spend more time advocating for arts education and why he thinks there is great value in a new focus and NOT committing to a curriculum. Fore the Kids foundation is a proud supporter of Children's Mercy, raising money to provide services and treatment advances to help bring smiles to children's faces at a time when they are hard to find…but so incredibly important. Help us meet our goals for 2017: Funds benefit the development of an integrated education and treatment program to support the developmental and behavioral sciences division of CMK. Nick and Jake's Fore the Kids golf tournament has been a proud supporter of Children's Mercy, raising over $1.5 million and providing all the “extra's” of care. Proceeds from the tournament have brought iPads to patient's bedsides, created and started a pet Therapy program for children with cancer and epilepsy. And teamed with the Automobile Dealers of Greater Kansas City Charitable Foundation, Fore the Kids raised enough money to purchase a brand-new ambulance in 2015 and two new critical care ambulances in 2016. For years the topic of suicide and depression for school-aged children has been so taboo and terrifying to talk about, but the fact of the matter is, suicide is the second leading cause of death in the United States for anyone between the ages of 10-24. More teenagers die from suicide than cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, COMBINED. @NickandJakes @ChildrensMercy @ForetheKidsKC #VegasStrong #SlackerMorningShow101theFox #TMobile
In Episode 21 of Fireside Chat, Sara Gundell (The Hunger Games Examiner) joins us to share some incredibly exciting news that no Hunger Games fan will want to miss! We also chat with the creator of The Hunger Games Collab on YouTube, discuss the latest filming-related news, get overly excited about Jennifer Lawrence's recording of "Rue's Lullaby" ("coming out soon," according to T. Bone Burnett!), and comment on the Peacekeeper uniforms (as seen in the still of Gale at the Reaping). Lastly -- but perhaps most importantly -- we celebrate the one-year anniversary of the release of Mockingjay by revealing some of our pre-Mockingjay theories, sharing our favorite Mockingjay moments, and more (a special round of CMK might be involved).
