Recorded October 26, 2023. The response from Israel post October 7th has been devastating on civilians, especially children in Palestine. Gabe and Sameer have Luisa (their favorite guest) from Why You Mad podcast to talk about the current climate in the United States and abroad. They discuss the immediate McCarthyist attempts at silencing people who question the indiscriminate killing of civilians by Israel as "self defense" in the entertainment industry (among many others) They discuss various attempts at pink-washing and delegitimizing protest to attempt to force Americans to acquiesce and allow a genocide. We urge you to do regarding this subject matter, the kind one used to do at a library, not the kind people do on Instagram via memes. Sameer talks about how Joe Biden spit in the face of Muslims and Arabs across the US and how as a community he has seen them vow not to vote Democrat ever again. They also discuss the article from the New Yorker about Hasan Minhaj and how it was a hit piece along with his response video with receipts. Some immediate moves you can make to help: Demand an immediate ceasefire by calling an writing to your reps. https://www.jewishvoiceforpeace.org/resource/call-congress-support-ceasefire/ Educate your family and friends about the evils of the occupation. March at protests, speak up online. Wow, I didn't even make it through six months before breaking from my self-imposed structure for the podcast... lately, I've been listening to a lot of Why You Mad, a podcast hosted by my old friend Jake Flores and Luisa Diez. I've found their conversations about pop culture, gender, sex & sexuality to be incredibly helpful during my "rebuilding" year. Even when I don't agree with her (maybe especially when I don't agree with her) I've found Luisa's takes to spur me on because she's done her research and always brings footnotes to a slugfest. I had to have her on, try to find out what makes her tick. Here's Luisa: I'm an anthropologist focused on modern American culture, specifically through the social and material production of artists and art. I work in arts representation and media & records management for museums, national monuments, and streaming/television media companies. On the side, I produce live comedy shows, book comedy talent for one-off projects, and host a podcast called Why You Mad with comedian and friend Jake Flores, in which we talk about art, comedy, and anything else that comes up, through a leftist, latino, feminist perspective.

In this episode, Jeremy and Dev welcome stand-up comedy aficionado, Luisa Diez. Luisa's transition from super fan to established stand-up comedy booker in NYC's alt comedy scene is simply awe inspiring. As Luisa sees it, comedy has never been in a better place. With her enormous love and knowledge of stand-up, she offers an incredibly insightful and detailed breakdown of what comics, audience and industry could do to help lead the evolution of comedy. At the end of the episode, Dev chimes in with her answer to the burning question, “How does one find the man of their dreams"?

Look, I'm not happy about this either but it had to be done. A big fat 2 hour podcast about Nanette. It had to be done, and now that it's done we can finally stop talking about Nanette. Except that we can't. And we never will. Nanette is life. My bullshit aside, my guests are great. Peter Moskowitz is a writer who published a fantastic piece in The Outline entitled "The Nanette Problem" in which they dissect the set from a queer radical perspective. Luisa Diez is the only sane person in New York comedy. She's an anthropologist and comedy booker who watches us like we're animals which, let's be honest, is giving us too much credit. To top it all off, Anders Lee is back from debuting his one man show, Dummy, at the Edinburgh fringe festival in Scotland. We pick things up mid discussion about the importance of setting boundaries. We find out how Luisa spells Comedy, why she’s technically not industry & who helped Luisa go from comedy fan to comedy producer. Plus, where do comedians look for stability, what is Luisa really thinking about when a comic is on stage and how the temporality of art applies to stand-up

Luisa Diez came over to talk about her father's involvement in the Escobar drug cartel in Colombia. She grew up in the middle of it all with her father who was pretty much CFO of Escobar's cartel. It was a really interesting discussion about her family and about the state of the drug trade in the 1980s.
This is the Protest episode where we not only vent our anger about the police killings of unarmed Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and Tamir Rice, but we talk to some people who have been on the front lines.
