Three pocast episodes ... in one week? In this economy?  We had a lot to catch up on from our time away at the end of summer, and the arrival of September always brings a slew of new releases. Here's what we've got for you this time: BUDDY. This twisted horror comedy came out a couple weeks ago, but this is very much our kind of movie, so we knew we needed to catch up with it. The film from surrealist Casper Kelly (Adult Swim's "Too Many Cooks," "Yule Log") is set in a kitschy '90s kids TV show that looks a lot like "Barney & Friends." But "It's Buddy" is about an orange unicorn who doesn't like it when the young cast members dare to question his authority. Starring Keegan-Michael Key, Cristin Milioti, Delaney Quinn, and Patton Oswalt as a talking backpack named Strappy. In theaters. CALL MY AGENT! THE MOVIE. The French comedy series is now a feature film after four seasons on Netflix. Everyone is back, but now the action has moved from a talent agency to a movie set. Alonso loved this show, but Christy had never seen a single episode, so it was fun to come at it from both perspectives. Camille Cottin, Laure Calamy, Laetitia Casta and George Clooney co-star. THE DEVIL'S LEDGER Week of August 30, 2026 Mother Nature reminds us who's in charge, a Colombian “sorcerer” faces the horrifying consequences of a healing ritual, The Fresno Nightcrawler walks into The New Monsters, Carolyn Ossorio investigates the murder of Dee Warner, and The Slippery opens the mailbag and reveals what they're working on next. Then, in This Week in Horror, we enter the deeply deranged children's television nightmare of Buddy. THE CREEPIEST THING I HEARD THIS WEEK: THE SORCERER OF LIBORINA This week's story takes us back to 2021 and rural Antioquia, Colombia, where a 31-year-old mother of four sought spiritual healing from a man known as the Sorcerer of Liborina. According to prosecutors, Martín Rangel Londoño Jaramillo covered the woman with a homemade mixture containing alcohol, sulfur and camphor before setting fire to the substance as part of the ritual. The woman suffered burns across approximately 70 percent of her body. Investigators allege that instead of immediately seeking emergency treatment, the Sorcerer sent her home with an herbal remedy. She eventually reached a hospital in Medellín but died about a week later. Authorities subsequently arrested Londoño Jaramillo on a murder charge; he denied the accusations. It's a disturbing reminder of an ancient human vulnerability: when we're suffering, we'll sometimes place extraordinary trust in anyone who promises they can make the suffering stop. THIS WEEK ON THE DEVIL WITHIN Our journey through The New Monsters continues with one of the internet age's strangest cryptids: The Fresno Nightcrawler. It begins with grainy security footage from Fresno, California, showing a pale, impossibly thin figure seemingly composed almost entirely of legs walking across a lawn in the middle of the night. The footage raised far more questions than it answered—and then the Nightcrawler received the one thing every aspiring cryptid needs if it hopes to become genuine folklore: A second sighting. Hear the incredible story of the Fresno Nightcrawler this week on The Devil Within. CRIMINAL MISCHIEF Carolyn Ossorio investigates the disappearance and murder of Dee Warner, a Michigan mother of five who vanished from her property in 2021 following an argument with her husband, Dale. Years of searching ultimately led investigators back to the property, where Dee's remains were discovered concealed inside a fertilizer tank. Dale Warner was subsequently convicted of second-degree murder and tampering with evidence. Carolyn takes us through the disappearance, the investigation and the breakthrough that finally revealed what happened to Dee. THE SLIPPERY Scott and Nancy revisit several stories they've covered so far, bringing us new developments, unanswered questions and cases that weren't nearly as finished as they appeared. They'll also take us behind the scenes to reveal what's currently being investigated—including a new cancer scammer series coming this fall—before opening the mailbag to respond to your comments, questions and observations about the show. Well, gang. It was just about time for someone to make a movie about a kids' show featuring an angry, murderous talking unicorn. What's that, you say? Sounds crazy? It is! BUDDY's (1:55) co-writer and director is Casper Kelly, mostly known for his work on Adult Swim. (Check out "Too Many Cooks" if you need an introduction.) Anyway, Buddy wants to teach his four human child friends to dance, but one refuses. And when that kid disappears and leaves behind a bloody book, some of the other kids decide to figure out what's going on. You can imagine that the consequences are horrific (because they are), with a generous helping of absurdist humor. In the end, Evan and Dave were both on board, with some caveats. Elliot Sneider is a pianist, composer, writer, and improviser originally from Syracuse, New York, where he began playing piano at the age of five. After ten years of classical study with pianist Richard Smernoff, Sneider became obsessed with jazz and blues, studying improvisation with Beth Separac and quickly finding his voice as an improviser. Before long, he was performing professionally throughout Central New York as a teenager, including holding down the piano chair with the Sunday Night Road Band, music directing productions for Syracuse's Talent Company, including the SAMMY Award-winning productions of A Chorus Line and The Full Monty, and spending summers performing with the Stan Colella All-Star Band. He also led his own groups, Too Many Cooks and Five Layer Burrito, the latter with singer/guitarist Joe Driscoll. From an early age, Sneider moved comfortably between jazz clubs, theater pits, concert halls, and community arts spaces — a musical openness that continues to shape his work today. After studying Jazz Composition at the New England Conservatory of Music, Sneider went on to earn degrees in composition and electronic music from New York University and Arizona State University, where he completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Composition. While at NEC, he studied with artists including pianist Paul Bley, whose approach to improvisation deeply influenced Sneider's musical voice and understanding of spontaneity, vulnerability, and listening. Over the years, Sneider's work has ranged from jazz performance and theater to multimedia composition, songwriting, music technology, and arts leadership. His performing career has included collaborations with Michael Arenella's Dreamland Orchestra, Ryan Hobler's Sunroom, Foly Kolade's Asiko, and a wide range of artists throughout New York State. His current project, Merciful TRVLR, brings together many of these musical worlds through performances that blend jazz, Americana, improvisation, storytelling, and song. Following the loss of his wife to cancer, Sneider began creating performances centered on grief, resilience, caregiving, memory, and human connection. Combining original music, spoken narrative, and collaborative improvisation, Merciful TRVLR creates intimate listening-room experiences where audiences are invited not simply to observe, but to reflect, connect, and feel less alone. Sarah and I are still deep in the 30th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival here in Montreal. It’s time for the second episode of 9to5.cc Goes to Fantasia. As usual, we're keeping it loose, chatting about the movies we've seen, and trying not to spoil anything big. Our dog Clementine made us do a few extra takes again, but we got there. In this episode we talk about two very different Canadian premieres. First up is After School (also known as Straf), a Dutch dark comedy directed by Merijn Scholte Albers and Tobias Smeets. It follows Edwin (Rutger de Bekker), a music teacher who's a total pushover and gets himself into deeper and deeper trouble after a bad decision with a nightmare student. It's super tense, cringe-inducing in the best way, and genuinely one of the funniest straight comedies we've seen in a while. There’s a second screening on July 25th so you still have a chance to see it at Fantasia. Then we get into Dance Freak, from Alan Resnick and Robby Rackleff. This one's a lot weirder — high-contrast black-and-white surreal absurdity with a ton of practical effects. Underground internet comedy vibes from the 2010s turned into a feature length film. If you're into the wild late-night Adult Swim shorts (think Unedited Footage of a Bear, Too Many Cooks, etc), Mike Diva stuff, or Sarah Sherman's SNL sketches, this might be your jam. I was cracking up; Sarah was mostly just staring at me wondering what the hell I was laughing at. It's definitely not for everybody, but I had a great time with its pure absurdity. Let's break down some highlights:Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will premiere this year on December 10 on Disney+. Casting for season 3 characters Nico and Bianca di Angelo was announced by author Rick Riordan - with Levi Chrisopulos and Olive Abercrombie in the roles, respectively.Rob Reiner shared the first trailer for Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. The film will release on September 2 of this year.Early access footage from a range of projects was shown at SDCC. Bill Gothard and Dr. Dobson were incredibly similar, and created very similar dysfunctional family cultures (the latter just had fewer kids). We're recapping the episodes, talking about what stands out to us and processing some religious trauma along the way. We're releasing episodes on both podcasts, a true crossover series. Yule Log is a crazy, surreal, comedic horror movie written and directed by Casper Kelly and with cinematography by Alex Allgood, made for Adult Swim and available on HBO Max. Even though it's a month past Christmas, fire up Yule Log if you haven't seen it already- it's bound to be one of the weirdest and most original movies you've seen in awhile. For Yule Log, Casper and cinematographer Alex Allgood decided to keep the camera locked off on the fireplace logs for as long as possible, so people might think it was just a recording of a fireplace for holiday ambiance, before introducing more action around (and inside) the fireplace and in the cabin, as people enter and events unfold. The movie takes place in a cabin, but over multiple timelines that overlap and combine different genres from comedy to horror to Lynchian-style surrealism. Alex liked the script, and felt that even though the movie leads with the long lockoff shot on the fireplace that the dialog kept everything going. He only had about three weeks to prep the movie, and they shot Yule Log in about 14 days. He enjoyed working with Casper and combining so many different creative elements into the movie. Alex always sees projects in terms of lighting first and camera second, so he tried to create a cohesive look with the lighting on the film throughout each scene, using a lot of firelight of course. Casper has always enjoyed taking risks and seeing things that he hasn't seen before vs. following a formula. His first job was on the low budget horror movie Basket Case 3, and he wrote and directed another short dark comedy spoof TV show for Adult Swim called Too Many Cooks. With his previous experience and relationship with Adult Swim, Casper pitched Yule Log and was paid to make it- he thinks if he had done it as a spec script, no one would have given him money to make such a crazy film. Casper wasn't sure the many, many ideas in Yule Log were all going to work, but he wanted to go for it and take risks. On this edition of Parallax Views, Adult Swim, the late night programming block, followed up the Season 6 finale of the popular Rick and Morty with the Adult Swim Yule Log (aka The Fireplace). What started out as a seemingly ordinary yule log video quickly morphed into something more unexpected: a feature-length film. More precisely, a horror movie featuring a cavalcade of genre tropes including UFOs, Satanic cults, murderous rednecks in the vein of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and even a rather devious little imp. Melding humor with comedy, the Adult Swim Yule Log is something that has to be seen to be believed as it's unlike anything you've likely seen before. Joining us on this episode is the Adult Swim Yule Log's writer/director, Casper Kelly. Casper is perhaps best known for his [adult swim] absurdist shorts Final Deployment 4: Queen Battle Walkthrough, the infamous Too Many Cooks, and the TV series Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell starring The Last Podcast on the Left's Henry Zebrowski. Additionally, Casper created the "Cheddar Goblin" sequence for the Nicolas Cage-starring horror movie Mandy and has written for such shows as The Squidbillies and Nickelodeon's CatDog. Oh, and he created the Scooby Doo parody of The Blair Witch Project known as The Scooby Doo Project. William Tokarsky is an American character actor known for his recurring role as William the Demon on the Adult Swim series Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell, and as the Killer in the cult adult swim hit Too Many Cooks. His first movie role was in Hunger Games: Catching Fire from there he went on to appear in Anchorman 2, Jumanji, one of our favorites Lodge 49 and many, many other films and television shows including the new Fox series Welcome to Flatch.
