The hosts of the West meet Morgoth in battle. Although his power had grown immensely, The Valar destroy nearly all the Balrogs and Orcs. Men join the Valar in the fight, but others side with Morgoth. Driven to the end, Morgoth unleashes winged dragons that had not before been seen. Eärendil arrives in his ship with all the great birds of heaven, and they win victory against the dragons. Morgoth is again chained by Angainor, and his iron crown is turned into a collar, and the Eönwë takes and guards the two remaining Silmarils. The continent is badly misshapen: the seas spill in from great chasms, valleys are upheaved and hills leveled. Maedhros and Maglor, despite their weariness, attempt to take back the Silmarils. Eönwë declares that they have forfeited their right to them by their wicked and merciless deeds–especially the killing of Dior. Maedhros and Maglor are summoned to Valinor to face judgment. 01:35 Cameron reads pages 251-255 from the Silmarillion, 2nd Edition 15:02 Summary 17:17 Discussion "But at the last the might of Valinor came up out of the West, and the challenge of the trumpets of Eönwë filled the sky; and Beleriand was ablaze with the glory of their arms, for the host of the Valar were arrayed in forms young fair and terrible, and the mountains rang beneath their feet." Two merging desires grow in Eärendil's heart: to find his parents across the sea and to reach Valinor and plead with the Valar for their intervention in the woes of Elves and Men. The remaining sons of Fëanor learn that Elwing possesses the Silmaril at the mouths of Sirion and attack the remnants of Gondolin and Doriath. Amrod and Amras are slain, leaving only Maedhros and Maglor. Elrond and Elros are taken captive, and Elwing casts herself into the sea with the Silmaril. 02:11 Dan reads pages 246-249 from the Silmarillion, 2nd Edition 15:00 Summary 16:29 Discussion "Then Elwing and the people of Sirion would not yield the jewel which Beren had won and Lúthien had worn, and for which Dior the fair was slain."
Tonight, the SilmFilm team continues its big-picture planning discussions, considering the Union of Maedhros.
I noticed some interesting parallels between Beren and Maedhros, starting with the fact that they both lost a hand, but when looking into it I found that it goes MUCH deeper than that…. Beren and Lúthien return. Lúthien heals the winter of Thingol. Melian cannot bear to look upon Lúthien, knowing that it is now their fate to be separated by death. Beren and Lúthien travel into Ossiriand and bear a son, Dior Aranel, the heir to Thingol. Maedhros attempts to rally the Eldar against Morgoth, but mistrust keeps them divided. The sons of Fëanor demand Thingol return the Silmaril that is rightly theirs, but he refuses. Maedhros gathers willing soldiers from Menegroth and from among Men and Dwarves. On the day of their assault, Maedhros' plans are frustrated by betrayal. 01:40 Dan reads pages 188-191 from the Silmarillion, 2nd Edition 14:31 Recap 15:53 Discussion "But now a cry went up, passing up the wind from the south from vale to vale, and Elves and Men liften their voices in wonder and joy. Fingon hears that his old friend Maedhros is captured, he goes alone to rescue him. He reaches the base of the precipice from which Maedhros hangs, and Maedhros begs him to kill him with an arrow. Fingon prays to Manwë to guide his arrow to put Maedhros out of his misery... Three friends read and react to the greatest story you've never heard — the Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. 00:58 Greg reads pages 108-111 from the Silmarillion, 2nd Edition 10:30 Recap 11:24 Discussion "Fingon had been close in friendship with Maedhros; and though he knew not yet that Maedhros had not forgotten him at the burning of the ships, the thought of their ancient friendship stung his heart. Therefore he dared a deed which is Justly renowned among the feats of the princes of the Noldor: alone, and without the counsel of any, he set forth in search of Maedhros; and aided by the very darkness that Morgoth had made he came unseen into the fastness of his foes. High upon the shoulders of Thangorodrim he climbed, and looked in despair upon the desolation of the land; but no passage or crevice could he find through which he might come within Morgoth's stronghold." Birds play a massive, iconic role in the legendarium of Middle-earth. From the great Eagles that always seem to appear at the most eucatastrophic moments to the tiny Thrush that proves the downfall of Smaug, Tolkien's love for birds seems to rise to the level of his love for languages and trees! A few months ago, long-time listener, patron, and ornithologist Jonathan Rice sent us a lengthy email about swans, crows, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. It was so interesting that we decided to have Jonathan join us and discuss the role of birds in Middle-earth as well as the accuracy of Tolkien's depictions of birds. This episode is a recording of a talk I gave recently on JRR Tolkien's "Silmarillion". Begun even before the Great War, this work was considered by Tolkien to be the work the closest to his heart; his magnum opus. Yet the work wasn't even published until 1977, four years after Tolkien's death. Why is it a significant work? Would it be significant without the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings? What is Tolkien saying about the nature of evil? Hope? Friendship? and the power of words to convey a vision of the world? The Oath of the Silmarils, as given in Morgoth's Ring: “Be he foe or friend, be he foul or clean Brood of Morgoth or bright Vala, Elda or Maia or Aftercomer, Man yet unborn upon Middle-earth, Neither law, nor love, nor league of swords, Dread nor danger, not Doom itself Shall defend him from Fëanáro, and Fëanáro's kin, Whoso hideth or hoardeth, or in hand taketh, Finding keepeth or afar casteth A Silmaril. This swear we all… Death we will deal him ere Day's ending, Woe unto world's end! Our word hear thou, Eru Allfather! To the everlasting Darkness doom us if our deed faileth… On the holy mountain hear in witness and our vow remember, Manwë and Varda!" Thus spoke Maedhros and Maglor and Celegorm, Curufin and Caranthir, Amrod and Amras, princes of the Noldor; and many quailed to hear the dread words. The inscription inside the Ring of Power: "Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie." — The Lord of the Rings Hail, Earendil! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3wuI-bOSo8

Begin again the adventure at the end of days. This episode takes place immediate after the party defeated Gwarthaur and the raised and possessed Túrin Turambar and Glaurung. Jared reminds the players the state of things, and the group decides what to do with the Silmaril of Maedhros, the Master Palantir, and the tainted rapier (that they trapped Gwarthaur in).
Inside the Workshop of Aulë the group discovers Túrin Turambar, having been possessed by Gwarthaur, just finishing a ritual from the Golden Book. In his hands are the reforged sword, Gurthang, and the newly found silmaril of Maedhros.
Mor-lomin wins riddle competition and is forever called Loremaster in Alqualondë. Tesoro reclaims his title at the drinking competition. Later, the group asks Olwë many questions. They ask him about how to curse Túrin from the possession of the shadow maiar, who he calls Gwarthaur. He also tells them that the silmaril of Maedhros has been found in a nearby "Workshop of Aulë.
The Great Eagles a lighthearted discussion about why the eagles didn’t help destroy the ring Welcome to the first episode of The Fifth Age Podcast: Tolkien Stories! In this episode, we talk about the great eagles. We address the idea that the eagles could help destroy the ring, like they do in the How It Should Have Ended video. Why do they help all these times throughout history, but fail to help their buddy Gandalf with his jewelry problem? We discuss the Council of Elrond several times. Dan has trouble letting go of the fact that the great eagles can talk. Erica makes vague allusions to the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales stories where the eagles get their talons all up in people’s business. Why can’t Legolas just surf an eagle into Mordor while Frodo sinks the ring into Mount Doom? We give a shoutout to Marc Singer’s abs in Beastmaster. In the end we decide that the destruction of the ring is a special forces mission not an airdrop, and most importantly that the Eagles don't actually do things for people, they come in after it's already done. Episode Timeline: 00:52 The eagles and Elrond are neighbors. 01:03 Why are the eagles in the Misty Mountains? 02:15 Just big talkin’ eagles - some sources say they are spirits or maia, but it’s pretty vague. 02:45 Vala and Maia 03:06 Giant talking eagles 04:12 They are pretty Deus Ex Machina when they show up, aren’t they? 05:47 Correction: The Misty Mountains are not “pretty far west” for the eagles. We meant east because Beleriand reasons. 05:50 Ages - there are 3 ages of Middle-Earth The first age ended with the fall of Morgoth. The second age ended with the defeat of Sauron in the last alliance. The Silmarillion describes the fate of the three Silmarils. Earendil kept one, and traveled with it through the sky, where it became the planet Venus. Maedhros stole another, but regretted his deed and jumped into a fiery chasm. And Maglor took the last one, but threw it into the sea in despair. Well, Venus is still around. But what happened to the latter two? Surely over all the intervening millennia, with so many people wanting a Silmaril, they haven’t just hung around in the earth and ocean? After some research, I’ve developed a couple of promising leads for the location of the Silmarils in the Fifth Age.
In Chapter 13 of The Silmarillion, Fëanor's host arrives in Middle-earth shortly before Fingolfin's, leading to an awkward family reunion that just gets more awkward when somebody calls Uncle Thingol. Fëanor's dream of revenge goes up in flames, and we tally up his good-or-evil score including Tolkien's own thoughts from his letters. We also read the inspiring story of Fingon and Maedhros, and have way too much fun with the new toy in Alan's studio.
