In this week's episode, we continue with our November Writing Challenge, and discuss how outlining can be a helpful tool in writing your novel and building a writing habit. TRANSCRIPT 00:00:00 Introduction and Writing Updates Hello, everyone. Welcome to Episode 226 of The Pulp Writer Show. My name is Jonathan Moeller. Today is November the 8th, 2024 and today we are discussing Part 2 of our November Writing Challenge and that will mostly discuss the usefulness of making outlines. Before we get into that, we will have an update on my current writing projects and Question of the Week. We will also close out the episode with a preview of the upcoming audiobook Cloak of Spears, as narrated by Hollis McCarthy. First up, writing progress. The rough draft of Cloak of Illusion is done at about 96,000 words, and I'm about 25% of the way through the first editing pass. I also wrote a short story called Trick or Treat that will be a companion to the book. Newsletter subscribers will get a free ebook copy of that short story when Cloak of Illusion comes out, hopefully before the end of November. So now would be an excellent time to subscribe to my new release newsletter. After Cloak of Illusion is published, my next project will be Orc Hoard, the 4th book in the Rivah Half-Elven series, and I'm about 21,000 words into that. In audiobook news, as you may have already heard, Cloak of Spears is done. That will be narrated by Hollis McCarthy and it is working its way through processing right now. Shield of Conquest narrated by Brad Wills is also still working its way through processing on the various audiobook platforms. So you can get both audiobooks on my Payhip store right now if you don't want to wait. So that is where I met with my writing projects. 00:01:25 Question of the Week Now let's talk about Question of the Week. It's time for Question of the Week, designed to inspire interesting discussions of enjoyable topics. This week's question: what is your favorite book cover (like in terms of the artwork, the design, etcetera)? No wrong answers, obviously. We had a few answers this week. Justin says: For that, I go back to the guilty pleasures of my youth, a teenager on a Burroughs kick at the time, digging for paperbacks in a secondhand bookstore. Savage Pellucidar, cover by Frank Franzetta (the 1974 Ace edition reprint), which I still have stashed away. Franzetta was an incredible artist. I love his Sea Witch and Death Dealer, but we're talking about book covers here. Savage Pellucidar was the one for me. Mary says: Maps and Legends by Michael Chabon. Then, that cover was a work of art with three detachable bands. Surabhi says: Hard to choose one. I personally love those young adult “Book Tok” book covers: Shadow and Bone, Six of Crows, The Cruel Prince. I don't know. Something about such covers immediately sparks interest in me. Randy says he always liked the Heinlein juvenile covers. Gary S. says: This was difficult for me because I like hardcovers, but I like to take the jacket off while I read so it doesn't get torn. Consequently, I seldom look at the covers. Gary B says: Anne McCaffrey's The White Dragon. I've got a poster/artwork of it and pretty much anything by Michael Whelan. Becca says: Stoner by Tad Williams, pretty much tops my list of favorite covers, then maybe The Dragonstone by McKiernan. Catriona says: Terry Pratchett's The Colour of Magic. MG says: That's quite difficult to answer, but I have a Return of the King copy with this Alan Lee cover, going to have to go with this. For myself, I think I would go with a hardback edition of The Silmarillion from the late 1990s. I think it was published in ‘99. It was illustrated by Ted Nasmith and the cover image shows Maglor throwing the final Silmaril into the sea in despair for his deeds. If you know the context of that scene, it's an amazingly powerful cover. So that is it for Question of the Week and tune in again for next week's Question of the Week. 00:03:22 Main Topic of the Week Now it's time to our main topic for our second week of our November Writing Challenge. This week we're going to talk about building story structure and how outlining can help with this. If you haven't heard of my November Writing Challenge, the idea is that you write 300 words or a similarly small number every day in hopes of building up a small but sustainable writing habit. I was thinking of NaNoWriMo, where you write 1600 words a day in an effort to get to 50,000 words a month, is well and good for someone like me, where I essentially write a book every month unless something comes up. But for someone starting out, it can be a bit like the sort of crash diet where you lose 5 pounds in a month and then gain 10 back over the next two months as your habits snap back. That's because you didn't lose the weight through sustainable means, so that is the goal with the November writing challenge: to build the base of a sustainable writing habit. So let's talk about how story structure can help you do that. In last week's episode, I mentioned that making the outline of your story can help with the process of writing. In this week's episode, we're going to go into more detail about story structure and conflict. Knowing how these work in your stories is essential to building an outline. You will find that having a proper structure to your story makes it easier to write, in the same way that having a proper foundation for your house makes it easier to construct. We'll talk about what I call the five iron laws of storytelling and the importance of your story having conflict and at the end of the episode, we will get a quick update from my podcast transcriptionist, who is following along with the November Writing Challenge. We will see how that is working out for her so far. So first, why write an outline? I think the main value of writing an outline, especially for beginning writers, is that it forces you to think about the story in advance and forces you to work out any potential plot holes in advance, since it's very easy to find yourself writing yourself into a corner and not knowing how to proceed. Obviously, writing an outline is not for everyone, and some writers say it impairs their creativity and they can't write with an outline. And that's fine, if you know that about yourself. But if you're just starting out, you may not be experienced enough to realize that about your writing style, and you may in fact benefit quite a bit from having written an outline in advance. So with that in mind, what does an outline need? First thing you need to understand is the shape of the story. Who is the protagonist? What is the protagonist's goal? What is the conflict, and what will the protagonist have to do to resolve that conflict? You can, if you want, put in the number of chapters in the outline. The way I usually do it is I write a 2,000 word or so synopsis of the book, and then I chop it up into chapters, though lately my final drafts don't have the same number of chapters as the outline because as I go through, I'll think of things to improve or scenes to move around and so forth. You may find a similar experience when writing from an outline yourself. It is nothing to worry about and can happen. It's also important to keep in mind that the conflict does need to escalate, and you do need to have a strong central conflict. So what do I mean by having a protagonist with the conflict that escalates and he takes action to it? This is something I actually have talked about in this podcast quite a bit, and in my nonfiction book Storytelling: How to Write a Novel. I have something I (rather tongue in cheek) call the five iron laws of storytelling, where if you want to write a good, compelling story, you need to have these five rules you should follow. Now, this is not, you know, true at all times in all places. But I do think you will probably get good results by following these five rules. Now what are these five rules, the five iron laws of storytelling? #1: The protagonist must have a problem that results in a conflict. #2: The protagonist's problem and conflict must be consequential and have real stakes. #3 The protagonist must take action and struggle to resolve his or her conflict and problem. #4 The protagonist must face challenges and setbacks, and his or her efforts to resolve the problem may even backfire. #5, The ending must absolutely provide satisfactory emotional resolution to the problems raised in the story. That might be the most important one of all. Where outlining can help you with this is if you see the story laid out in an outline as in a chart in something like Plottr or something like that, you can look it over and see- do I have a protagonist who has a interesting problem? Is the problem consequential for the protagonist? Is the protagonist trying to resolve the conflict? Is the protagonist experiencing setbacks and challenges, and perhaps even unintended consequences as he or she tries to resolve the problem? And finally, is the resolution emotionally satisfying? It doesn't have to be a happy ending. It doesn't have to be a totally sad ending. It can be a bittersweet ending. But whatever the ending, it has to resolve the conflict of the story in an emotionally satisfactory manner. Anything else can be absolutely disastrous. So if you are writing an outline for your novel or story, and you follow these five iron laws of storytelling, then I think you are on good track to have a good, well written story with a conflict and a protagonist that readers will find enjoyable and interesting. It is important to have a good conflict in the story. You can jump back to Episode 222 of the podcast, in which we talked about story conflicts, which offered much valuable advice on introducing conflicts. Some of the key points of that episode are there are many different types of conflict the story can have. The word conflict by its very nature seems to pull up images of like, violent conflict. That's often the word we use to describe conflict, to describe violence as conflict, but it doesn't have to be a violent conflict at all. It can be, you know, certain types of legal thrillers. There's no violence at all. It can be, you know, conflict between a man and a woman who are romantically attracted to each other but are unable to resolve these feelings, which can, you know, that kind of conflict drives a significant portion of the entire publishing industry. Ideally, a story should have multiple conflicts and even different types of conflict. There are numerous ways to add conflict into a story. They include putting characters into an unfamiliar environment, forcing your characters into making decisions, and having different characters face the same conflict in different ways. For more details on that, you can check out Episode 222 of this podcast. For tips and tricks on introducing more conflicts into your novel, I would recommend Episode 110 of this podcast, Three Techniques for Starting Your Novel and Introducing Conflict. In Episode 110, I said that there are lots of fun and exciting ways to introduce the conflict. I say fun and exciting because this is often where the story starts getting quite energetic. In a fantasy novel, it might be when the hero's village is attacked by orcs. In a mystery story, it's when someone stumbles across a dead body. In a thriller novel, perhaps the hero finds that a sinister terror plot is already well underway. The conflict can also be introduced more sedately. In an action-themed book, it is easy to introduce the conflict via sudden violence, the attack of orcs, or a surprise murder. Other kinds of stories may not involve so much physical danger. The central conflict of most romance novels, for example, is whether or not in the heroine and the love interest will get together and whether or not they can overcome the assorted obstacles preventing them from having a relationship. Romance novels might introduce conflict by having the love interest antagonize the heroine in some way, which is a common trope. Perhaps the love interest is a lawyer who represents the heroine's business rival, or the heroine is a local law enforcement official and the love interest is an FBI agent who threatens to take over her case. Regardless of how the conflict is introduced, the most important part of the conflict is that it must compel the protagonist to take action. If the conflict or the antagonist isn't serious enough to force the protagonist to act, then nothing happens and you don't have a story, so that perhaps is the main take away from conflict. The conflict has to be emotionally significant for the protagonist, and the protagonist has to take action to resolve it, even if the action makes things worse or causes setbacks. If you have a passive protagonist, that will very quickly turn off quite a few readers. So to sum up, the advantage of outlining is that it lets you work through potential problems in advance, and what you want in the outline is a protagonist with an emotionally relatable problem, a protagonist who takes action to resolve the problem, and a resolution to the story that is emotionally satisfying in terms of the conflict being resolved. The five iron laws of storytelling are a good checklist to look over your outline and make sure that you have a good, solid story structure. You can use them in fact as a checklist to see whether you think your outline is going to work and whether or not you can write a, you know, satisfying novel off it. So now we come to the update from my transcriptionist. As I mentioned, she was doing our November Writing Challenge and as part of our series of shows on that, she will send in weekly updates with her progress. Here is how she did this past week. “My goal for the challenge is 300 words a day. I picked a number that felt really low to help with the problem I have of not starting something when the goal is too undefined or too big. I also tend to do something intensely or not at all, with most days tending to the latter when in real life or obstacles get in the way. 300 words a day felt like something I could commit to without any worry, provided nothing really major comes up this month. So far I'm averaging 484 words per day and it's taking me an average of 15 minutes per day. I picked a specific chapter from my outline that was not the introduction I've been stuck on and a specific time of day to write. Doing both has made the process easier. In that vein, my questions for you are: do you write chapters or any pieces of the story out of order, or do you stick to the outline order when writing? Do you recommend people try writing out of order if they feel stuck?” So those are both interesting questions. For the first one, do you write chapters or any pieces of the story out of order, or do you stick to outline order when writing? I almost always write in the order of my outline. What changes is that when editing, I will very often split chapters up and move them around because I tend to write long chapters. In the editing for Cloak of Illusion so far, one chapter was like 10,000 words and another was 7,000 words, both of which are too long to be chapters. So the 10,000 word chapter got split up into three smaller ones and rearranged. The 7,000 word one got split into two chapters and moved around. So to give a shorter answer to that question, the answer would be no. When writing I tend to stick to the outline, but during editing I do tend to move things around as I think works best for the story. But editing is a different topic entirely. The second question: do you recommend people try writing it out of order if they feel stuck? You can try that. The pros are if you feel stuck on a particular scene, you can go ahead and write a different scene and then come back to that scene later. Or maybe it will turn out that the reason you're stuck is because the story didn't need the scene. You know, I do know some people who do write from an outline, but then tend to write out of order. The downside of that is if you're not careful, you can get your story's internal continuity mixed up a bit, but then that is another problem to fix in editing once the rough draft is finished, since right now we're at the stage where you get all the words down on the page or the word processor and then worry about fixing them later. So that is it for this week. Thanks for listening to The Pulp Writer Show. I hope you found the show useful and that you are finding our November Writing Challenge series to be useful as well. Beren and Lúthien return. Lúthien heals the winter of Thingol. Melian cannot bear to look upon Lúthien, knowing that it is now their fate to be separated by death. In the wake of Melkor's devastation and the death of Finwë, Fëanor declares himself king of the Noldor. Fëanor rallies the Noldor to forsake the Valar and return to Middle-Earth. He makes a terrible oath to pursue any who possess the Silmarils. But a messenger of Manwë bids the Noldor not to leave, foretelling that evil and sorrow await them. Three friends read and react to the greatest story you've never heard — the Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. 00:44 Dan reads pages 82-85 from the Silmarillion, 2nd Edition 15:28 Recap 16:18 Discussion "Then Fëanor swore a terrible oath. His seven sons leapt straightway to his side and took the selfsame vow together, and red as blood shone their drawn swords in the glare of the torches. They swore an oath which none shall break, and none should take, by the name even of Ilúvatar, calling the Everlasting Dark upon them if they kept it not; and Manwë they named in witness, and Varda, and the hallowed mountain of Taniquetil, vowing to pursue with vengeance and hatred to the ends of the World Vala, Demon, Elf or Man as yet unborn, or any creature, great or small, good or evil, that time should bring forth unto the end of days, whoso should hold or take or keep a Silmaril from their possession."

As I re-trace Frodo and Sam's journey from the Shire to Mordor, I'm revisiting the book and the movie. Join me as I discuss the story in detail. In this instalment, we travel from Buckleberry Ferry to Rivendell. We'll meet Tom Bombadil, Strider, and either Glorfindel or Arwen, depending on what medium you're enjoying the story through. ----more---- Transcript Welcome to Nerd Heaven. I’m Adam David Collings, the author of Jewel of The Stars And I am a nerd.   This is episode 27 of the podcast. Today, I’m doing part 2 of my Lord of The Rings Read, Walk, and Watch Series.   I’ve been using the Walk To Mordor App, and a fitbit, to retrace the steps of Frodo and Sam on their epic journey from Hobbiton to Mordor. As I walk the story, I’m also revisiting both the book and the movie and discussing the story.   We pick up this second installment at Buckleberry Ferry. So let’s talk about Lord of The Rings. So Frodo and his companions cross on the Buckleberry Ferry and make their way to Frodo’s new home at Crickhollow - the next milestone on my walk.   Its strikes me that Hobbits take such joy in simple pleasures. Frodo sings his favourite bath song. Favourite, implying there is more than one song 1 specifically dedicated to baths.   Frodo learns that Merry and Pippin know a good deal more about his current situation than they’re supposed to. It seems Sam has been feeding them information. Frodo is conflicted about this. He’s a little hurt and almost feels betrayed, but he’s also amused. Sam reminds him that Gandalf told him to take a companion he could trust with him on his adventure. “But it does not seem that I can trust anyone,” Frodo says.   And Merry says “It all depends on what you want. You can trust us to stick to you through thick and thin  - to the bitter end. And you can trust us to keep any secret of yours - closer than you keep it yourself. But you cannot trust us to let you face trouble alone, and go off without a word. We are your friends , Frodo. Anyway, there it is. We know most of what Gandalf has told you. We know a good deal about the ring. We are horribly afraid - but we are coming with you; or following you like hounds.”   One of the strongest themes that comes through this story, to me, is that of friendship. If there’s one thing that Hobbits are good at, it’s friendship. Sam, Merry and Pippin demonstrate true dedication to their friend.  Sam especially. I think that’s one of the things we all love so much about this story. Because we all want a friend as true as Sam. and perhaps we all aspire to be a friend like Sam.   In any case, it gives Frodo great joy to know his friends will not let him embark on this journey alone. And it gives me great joy to read about it.   So they finally leave the borders of shire. They’re really out of their element now. The hobbits have a real fear of the forest. I may not fully appreciate this fear of the woods. European woods are very different to the Australian bush. As I understand it, they’re more closed in, dark, and claustrophobic. A far cry from the wide open spaces Australia is known for. And this is where we get our first hint at the idea of sentient trees. These plants are not mindless. They have thoughts. Wills.   And this brings me to my next milestone. Old Man Willow. Old Man Willow is pretty darn creepy. This ancient tree with a mind of its own, and seemingly malicious intent entices them to sleep, and then traps Merry and Pippin, and tries to drown Frodo.   Enter Tom Bombadil. Now, Tom Bombadil has always come off as a little bit silly to me. The hobbit’s propensity to sing doesn’t bother me in the same way as Tom’s. Why is that? Is it the nonsense words? Or does it just seem out of place?   When they ask Tom who he is, his first reply is “I am.” I can’t help but see this as a biblical allusion. In the bible, when asked the same question by Moses, God identifies himself as “I am” In English, we translate this as yahweh. Is Tom claiming to be God here? Tom says he is the master of wood, water and hill. And now I can’t help but liken him to Adam. Not me, Adam & Eve. Adam was tasked with tending the garden. Caring for the earth. I’m not saying there’s any direct allegory here. Tolkien has been quoted saying he didn’t like direct allegory. But there’s got to be some of his Christian influence coming out in Tom Bombadil.   The more I read of this, the more convinced I become that, yes, the nonsense words really do annoy me. All this “Derry Dol Dillo.” It bugs the snot out of me.   The next day, in Tom’s house which is my next walking milestone, he tells the hobbits stories of wonder. But we don’t hear those stories. So we’re kind of left in the dark about what’s so great about this odd fellow. We learn the trees, like Old Man Willow, have grown old and hateful because of the destruction wreaked by people. (and by people I suppose I mean all humanoid sentient beings, such as humans, elves, dwarfs, hobbits.)   Tom indicates that he was first. Older than everything. This seems to confirm that he is this world’s Adam. It actually reminds me of Lorien in Babylon 5 - the first sentient being to arise in the universe. (and of course, the name Lorien is likely a Lord of The Rings reference) Lorien was a fascinating wondrous character. I was entranced by him. Tom Bombadil could have evoked similar wondrous feelings in me, but he just ruins it with his silly name and all the rhymes and prancing about. That kills the wonder, in my opinion.   But one of the most fascinating things about him is that he seems to be immune to the ring’s powers. Which raises the question, why doesn’t HE take it to mount doom?  We’ll address this question a little later.   So, they leave Tom’s house and get caught in a fog. Again, fog and mist are much more intimidating in the UK than here. We get a little bit of fog, and it means you have to turn your headlights on. Big deal. And my hometown sits in a valley, so we can get some decent fog sometimes. But it has very rarely been bad enough to cause me any anxiety. To make it impossible to see where you’re driving, or even walking. I’ve heard that in Wales, fog can be terrifying and quite dangerous, because you really can get lost and not be able to see your hand in front of your face. So I have to read this passage with that knowledge in mind.   At my next walking milestone, the hobbits are captured by Baron Wright. This whole passage feels pretty weak. We don’t even really see the character. It’s just. Oh, Frodo bumps into someone. Now he’s in a cell. And then they’re immediately rescued by Tom, who they summon with a song. He appears instantly. It seems old Tom can teleport. Tom sings, and the door opens. And just one more biblical reference for you, this reminds me of Peter’s escape from jail in the books of Acts.   This whole sequence feels completely pointless to me. Just Filler.   But we learn that Tom’s powers are limited to the region where he lives, where he is master. So that explains why he can’t take the ring to Mount Doom.   I remember reading all of this for the first time, after I had already seem the movie. And thinking to myself, I can see why they left all this out. It really doesn’t add anything to the story.   And then, they arrive in Bree, my next milestone. It’s dark, cold, and wet. The comfort of the inn seems very inviting.   They use some great camera tricks in the movie here to make the hobbits look smaller. It’s very basic stuff, using odd angles to shoot, but it’s surprisingly effective.   Their joy at arriving at the inn is tempered by the fact that Gandalf isn’t here.   Pippin’s reaction when he learns that beer comes in pints is priceless. A nice example of character-based humour. But Pippin still doesn’t understand the gravity of their situation. He forgets to keep the name baggins secret.   We get our first mention of Rangers, as they are so called by the people of Bree. they are thought to have strange powers of sight and hearing. It’s said they can understand animals. They wander about and are rarely seem.   One thing I love in the book is the mystery about what happened to Gandlaf. He was supposed to meet them in Hobbiton but he never showed. And all this time, they’ve still had no word from him. As Frodo’s anxiety buits, we can’t help but wonder, what has become of him? Will we ever see him again? If we don’t, what is Frodo to do?   And again, Tokien has this ability to make a hot meal and a comfortable bed feel like the most desirable things in the world. Things we take for granted in the modern world, but in a world like middle earth, and indeed in most of human history, these things were treasured, dreamed of by those who suffered the hardships of travel. We just don’t appreciate that in today’s world.   Once, they’ve been shown their room, and given a meal, the hobbits are invited to join ‘the company’. The movie presents a pub setting that’s quite familiar to us. Individual tables. People sitting in their own groups, talking with those they know. Maybe a few sitting at the bar getting to know each other. But that’s not what Tolkien describes in the book. All those who are staying at the inn that night are gathered together in a room, all talking and getting to know each other. It’s quite an alien concept to me. But it makes sense. There’s no TV. No phones to look at. What did people do of an evening? They met other people and talked with them.   I like the tension of trying whether or not to trust Strider. They don’t know if he secretly means them harm. He claims to know Gandalf, but ultimately, he’s a stranger.    But they get a letter from Gandalf. They at least know he was here. This letter, plus the revelation of Strider’s true name, Aragon, seems to put to rest any distrust of Strider. And, they’re pretty much at a loss by themselves right now, without Gandalf to lead them. So it seems like Strider or no one.   But they still don’t know where Gandalf is, or what he’s up to.   The way they shot the sleeping scene is clever. We get shots of Frodo and Sam sleeping, cut with the Riders in the room the hobbits were supposed to occupy. And then we see the pillows.   So they set off toward Rivendell. And we learn that the ring wraiths were once the kings of men, who were given the 9 rings. But those rings are ruled by the one ring, so they were corrupted by it.   And that’s when we get the famous second breakfast scene, which is just delightful. It’s funny, but also revealing of character. I know this scene has spawned a billion memes on the internet, but let’s just appreciate  the scene in it’s original form.  It’s great.   We pass through my next two walking milestones, midgewater marshes west, and midgewater marshes east. There’s not a lot to talk about here. Plenty of complaining about bugs. I don’t blame them. I’d probably be complaining about the bugs as well.   Souron orders Saruman to build him an army. This is where we see them clearing the forest and constructing a factory deep in the earth, while Gandalf is trapped on top of the tower.   The factory senes are great. We get to appreciate the visuals as the camera swooops around, being the eyes of the butterfly. They’re making weapons, but they’re also making soldiers. The scene where the Uruk Hai is born out of the mud looks amazing. Very creepy, and very alien.   As they walk toward weathertop, Frodo tightens his belt. He notes there is less of him. Welll, it’s working for Frodo. Will it work for me? It hasn’t yet. But we’re not at Weathertop. This milestone represents 386.23 Kilometres. That’s a lot of walking. The difference is, Frodo has done it over the course of a couple of days I’ve been doing this for months. I’ve definitely been going out to walk a lot less during the COVID-19 lockdown. We ARE allowed to leave the house to exercise, but honestly, I’ve just been really busy. I need to step this up a bit and try to get in more steps per day.   Strider tells them the story of Beren and Lúthien. And it’s very briefly mentioned in the movie. They were, of course, a human and an elf that fell in love. It’s quite fitting that Strider tells this story, given his relationship with Arwen, as we’ll see later. As I understand it, the story of Beren and Luthien is told in more detail in The Silmarillion, which I should read some time. But there’s some cool tidbits I hadn’t noticed before, here. Strider talks of The Great Enemy, of whom Souron was but a servant. Now That’s interesting. And we learn they stole a jewel from the the enemy’s crown - a silmaril. So that’s where the Silmarillion gets its name. A Silmaril is a type of jewel. All very interesting, the stuff Tolkien just drops in here casually.   The same carelessness from Pippin and the others, that we saw in the pub , also leads the nazgul to the fortress where they sleep. Their fry-up does sound good, but they’re trying to go under the radar.   So Frodo gets stabbed.   The flight to Rivendell after the stabbing is much more dramatic in the movie. It heightens the severity of Frodo’s condition. In the book, he’s awake and chatting with the others. I just don’t get the same sense of how much danger he really is in.   So we pass through the Trollshaws and encounter Mr. Bilbo’s Trolls. These are my next two milestones. Finding the stone remains of Bilbo’s trolls is a nice little nod to the previous book.  It does make sense they’d stumble upon them, because they’re following the same path to Rivendell that the party did back in The Hobbit. And this scene briefly appears in the extended cut of the movie.   Then they meet Glorfindel at 632 km. And he helps them get Frodo to Rivendell quicker, so he can receive medical attention from the elves. Of course, in the movie, it’s Arwen. I can see why they did that. First of all, it saved them casting another character for a relatively minor role, but it also allowed them to introduce Arwen’s character a little earlier and establish her relationship with Aragorn.   They reach the Ford of Bruinen, my next milestone, with the ring wraiths hot on their tail. Glorfindel / Arwen uses magic to call the rushing water to sweep the wraiths away. I love how this is visualised in the movie, galloping horses makde out of water. It looks great, and adds to the magical aspect of it.   And so that brings us to Rivendell. 737 km into my walk. That’s quite a distance. This is also the end of book 1. No, not the physical book, Fellow of The Ring. This is Tolkien’s original division of the story into six books. The publisher, of course, chose to publish the story in three volumns, each containing two books.   So next time, we’ll see the formation of the fellowship, and we’ll truly set out, on our journey to Mordor. I’d better get out there and do some more walking.

The Silmarillion on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2phrxme I desperately wanted to use The Curse of Fëanor by Blind Guardian for the background music, but thought it might be distracting. P.S. For some astute viewers, you might wonder why Beren, a man, could grab a Silmaril without being burned. There's some debate about this, with some thinking that the Silmarils are partly sentient, like the One Ring, and can choose not to burn. Having been awakened by Gwarthaur, Ancalagon the Black has knocked Eärendil out of the sky. With him fell his Silmaril and the carriers of the sun and moon, Arien and Tilion. While traveling through Oiomúrë, they find Tilion and the great maiar Eönwë. Then the group arrives at the Helcaraxë, where they find the body of Eärendil and his nemesis.

Charlie, Burin's new player, joins in this episode. And though we had some technical difficulties (you can't hear the player microphones), the storyline is intact. The group defeats the kraken and takes both the Dragon Helm of Dorlomin and Silmaril of Maglor back to Ilmarin.

Begin again the adventure at the end of days. This episode takes place immediate after the party defeated Gwarthaur and the raised and possessed Túrin Turambar and Glaurung. Jared reminds the players the state of things, and the group decides what to do with the Silmaril of Maedhros, the Master Palantir, and the tainted rapier (that they trapped Gwarthaur in).

The Silmarillion describes the fate of the three Silmarils. Earendil kept one, and traveled with it through the sky, where it became the planet Venus. Maedhros stole another, but regretted his deed and jumped into a fiery chasm. And Maglor took the last one, but threw it into the sea in despair. Well, Venus is still around. But what happened to the latter two? Surely over all the intervening millennia, with so many people wanting a Silmaril, they haven’t just hung around in the earth and ocean? After some research, I’ve developed a couple of promising leads for the location of the Silmarils in the Fifth Age.

In Chapter 22 of The Silmarillion, Húrin is released from Angband to finish his son’s work of destroying everything he touches, and his visit to Thingol starts a chain reaction leading to war between Doriath and the Dwarves of Nogrod. As Menegroth falls, the Silmaril comes through the hands of Beren and Lúthien to their son Dior, and is noticed by seven guys we haven’t heard from in a while. Plus, a look at Tolkien's explanation of the kinship of Celeborn and Nimloth tells us how to get to Sesame Street.

The last of three episodes on The Silmarillion Chapter 19, “Of Beren and Lúthien.” After putting the Dark Lord down for a nap, the lovers succeed in prying a Silmaril from Morgoth’s iron crown. Beren needs a helping hand to escape from Carcharoth, and Thingol figures out entirely on his own something everyone around him already knew. Our favorite hound meets his doom, and Lúthien is offered a profound choice about the future. We wrap up by discussing the way this romance impacts the rest of Tolkien’s legendarium, and shamelessly crack left-handed jokes.

Hey there fellow travelers! Welcome to The Tolkien Road, a long walk through the works and philosophy of J.R.R. Tolkien. On this episode, we discuss the final chapter of The Silmarillion, "The Voyage of Eärendil and the War of Wrath", wherein Eärendil makes his fateful voyage to the Blessed Realm in order to obtain the aid of the Valar.  The First Age ends here, and as you might expect, it’s a very eventful chapter, complete with the downfall of Morgoth, the doom of Fëanor’s sons, and the fate of the Silmarils. There’s a whole lot to discuss!  By the way, if you haven’t already, please leave The Tolkien Road a rating and feedback on iTunes. Only 15 episodes in, and we finally find out what a Silmaril is and where they came from! On this episode, John & Greta continue their chapter-by-chapter walkthrough of The Silmarillion with Chapter 7, Of the Silmarils and the Unrest of the Noldor. Things are starting to get ugly in the Blessed Realm! We discuss topics ranging from the origin of the Silmarils to Melkor's schemes to the desire for light in Middle-earth (and what exactly that's all about). Also, Greta completely outdoes John with her Tolkien haiku, proving that, like Bilbo to Gandalf, "When I left you I was but the learner; now I am the master." That was from The Hobbit, right? Come get lost in Middle-earth and explore the history and background of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Talking Tolkien is the podcast of the website TrueMyths.org.
