Rhonda is still in her Medievalist Era and making it everyone's problem, and Erin just wants to talk about some creatures, so you could say this is a typical Pop DNA episode. We continue our exploration of LOTR's relationship to medievalism in pop culture with a look at the beloved Medieval Y2K moment, exemplified in movies like A Knight's Tale, Ella Enchanted, Shrek, and of course the Jackson Lord of the Rings films. And the Star Wars prequels. This early 2000s interpretation of the middle ages is having a moment in current pop culture, and of course influencing the popular medievalism of today. After a brief dip into Tolkien's influence on Dungeons and Dragons, Erin finally gets to talk about all her favorite Tolkien creatures. The hosts of the West meet Morgoth in battle. Although his power had grown immensely, The Valar destroy nearly all the Balrogs and Orcs. Men join the Valar in the fight, but others side with Morgoth. Driven to the end, Morgoth unleashes winged dragons that had not before been seen. Eärendil arrives in his ship with all the great birds of heaven, and they win victory against the dragons. Morgoth is again chained by Angainor, and his iron crown is turned into a collar, and the Eönwë takes and guards the two remaining Silmarils. The continent is badly misshapen: the seas spill in from great chasms, valleys are upheaved and hills leveled. Maedhros and Maglor, despite their weariness, attempt to take back the Silmarils. Eönwë declares that they have forfeited their right to them by their wicked and merciless deeds–especially the killing of Dior. Maedhros and Maglor are summoned to Valinor to face judgment. 01:35 Cameron reads pages 251-255 from the Silmarillion, 2nd Edition 15:02 Summary 17:17 Discussion "But at the last the might of Valinor came up out of the West, and the challenge of the trumpets of Eönwë filled the sky; and Beleriand was ablaze with the glory of their arms, for the host of the Valar were arrayed in forms young fair and terrible, and the mountains rang beneath their feet." Morgoth sets his will on Gondolin. Maeglin wanders beyond the Encircling Mountains and is captured by Orcs and taken to Angband. He reveals the location of Gondolin to Morgoth and is sent back. On the day of a great feast, Morgoth attacks with his Balrogs and Orcs and dragons and wolves. Ecthelion faces Gothmog. 01:47 Cameron reads pages 241-245 from the Silmarillion, 2nd Edition 15:09 Summary 16:48 Discussion "The oath of Fëanor perhaps even Manwë could not loose, until it found its end, and the sons of Fëanor relinquished the Silmarils, upon with they had laid their ruthless claim." Link for my charity fundraising half marathon: https://linktr.ee/lotradhome This week we look at Balrogs, their history throughout 3 ages of Middle-earth, their creation, their power and the versions Tolkien drafted before settling on the big lads now.
Dorothea Karalus drove over 400 miles, repeatedly, over several years to repeat Fred Nicole's classic V13 La Danse des Balrogs in Branson, Switzerland. Through the process, she discovered that happiness wasn't sending - it was a separate thing - and maybe, just maybe, this is what allowed her passage on the boulder. In this episode, Kris asks Doro to set the scene in Branson and describe the boulder field, the view, the atmosphere, and the boulder itself. They discuss passion reignited and the mental battle of a long-term, long-distance project. Check out more here! ---------------------------------- Thank you to our partner, Tension Climbing. Fred Nicole was never simply an athlete. He was an artist. Coming into bouldering via a different direction than you might think, Fred Nicole did indeed create art. Really, really difficult art. First, La Danse des Balrogs, the worlds first V13. But that merely opened a door to new possibilities. Moving in his singular style, he sought out new challenges, new boulders on which to be tested. Or was it the other way around? Was he the one doing the testing? After all, what is art if it isn't interrogating the impossible and celebrating the imagination? And where La Danse had traversed, there was another line, beckoning for Fred to go up. A harder line. Radja, the King. SILMARILLION: 3.

Fingolfin, king of the Noldor, urges the people of Beleriand to unite in battle against Morgoth, but few heed his call. Morgoth launches an all-out assault, sending rivers of fire through the northern lands and massive armies of dragons, Balrogs, and orcs, thus beginning the fourth great battle, Dagor Bragollach, “the Battle of Sudden Flame”. Fingolfin, seeing that Dorthonion is lost, flies to the very doors of Anbgand and challenges Morgoth to single combat. Three friends read and react to the greatest story you've never heard — the Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. 00:55 Greg reads pages 150-154 from the Silmarillion, 2nd Edition 19:12 Recap 20:29 Discussion "Then Fingolfin beheld (as it seemed to him) the utter ruin of the Noldor, and the defeat beyond redress of all their houses; and filled with wrath and despair he mounted upon Rochallor his great horse and rode forth alone, and none might restrain him. He passed over Dor-nu-Fauglith like a wind amid the dust, and all that beheld his onset fled in amaze, thinking that Oromë himself was come: for a great madness of rage was upon him, so that his eyes shone like the eyes of the Valar. Thus he came alone to Angband's gates, and he sounded his horn, and smote once more upon the brazen doors, and challenged Morgoth to come forth to single combat. And Morgoth came." Season 18, Episode 18: Set Review (Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth) With the full set of Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth revealed and ready for action, Cavedan and Manacymbal join forces to rank the best new cards for Modern. The set continues to deliver small role players and long shot build arounds, but few blue chip staples. Stern Lesson is the cheapest version of Remove Soul, but that family of countermagic has no proven track record in constructed. Similarly, Flowering of the White Tree is the most powerful Anthem ever printed, but are Anthems viable in 2023 Modern? Goblins get a new toy in Moria Marauder, and Food strategies will be happy for the combo and value options that Samwise Gamgee provides. Beyond those, we must look to the far green country for long shot brewing targets. Doors of Durin is both explosive and grindy, Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff has echoes of Ledger Shredder, and Phial of Galadriel offers intriguing card draw possibilities. One does not simply register a brew in Modern, but with good fellowship and true companions our quest for a new deck may yet succeed. Happy brewing! Like our content? Morgoth sends his armies to attack the Noldor who succeed in driving back the attacking orcs. Fëanor pursues the retreating forces, hoping to find Morgoth himself. As he presses forward, he is surrounded by Morgoth's forces, and is attacked by Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs. Three friends read and react to the greatest story you've never heard — the Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. 00:42 Dan reads pages 106-108 from the Silmarillion, 2nd Edition 10:40 Recap 11:44 Discussion "For Fëanor, in his wrath against the Enemy, would not halt, but pressed on behind the remnant of the Orcs, thinking so to come at Morgoth himself: and he laughed aloud as he wielded his sword, rejoicing that he had dared the wrath of the Valar and the evils of the road, that he might see the hour of his vengeance. Nothing did he know of Angband or the great strength of defence that Morgoth had so swiftly prepared: but even had he known it would not have deterred him, for he was fey, consumed by the flame of his own wrath." Along with meeting each other through different Louisville bands we had played with over the years, (The Last Origin, Blank Agenda, The Balrogs) 7 out of our 9 members met through attended the University of Louisville School of Music, studying everything from jazz drumming to orchestral conducting. John, Misaki, and William met through playing in the UofL symphony orchestra together while Kenny, Matt, Christian, and Sam met through playing in the UofL Jazz department. John and Kenny (having known eachother through TLO) had been kicking around different demos/concepts starting in late 2020 and eventually wanted to form the band that would realize all of these ideas. The band gradually grew over the course of 2021-2022 by inviting in mutual friends from the UofL school of Music as well as friends from other bands in the area. While we have spent much of the past two years writing, practicing, and recording, we've put together a unique live show that we can't wait to perform. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tophillrecording/support

Melkor (Morgoth) delves a fortress called Angband and makes some Balrogs. The Valar hold counsel. Should they intervene or wait for him to reveal himself? Three friends read and react to the greatest story you've never heard — the Silmarillion by J.R.R. Yet be sure of this: the hour approaches, and within this age our hope shall be revealed, and the Children shall awake. Shall we then leave the lands of their dwelling desolate and full of evil? Wer hat den großen Kataklysmus überlebt und wer nicht? Wie geht es für die Überlebenden im frischgeformten Mordor weiter? Our old friend, Celeborn, makes an appearance, even if it's on a Second Age milk carton; Durin IV finds himself un-princed, and we hear some lovely Quenya from a tall Stranger in the Grove. James, Sara, and Alan discuss the seventh episode of The Rings of Power, but disagree on the nature of romantic meet-cutes. Isildur casts himself into the fire, Theo gets an actual sword (not just a hilt this time!), and Elrond makes an offer that Durin III can't refuse - except that he does. Also, Balrogs are light sleepers.
What do the New England Patriots and Amazon's "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" have in common? First up, a deep dive into what we know of the history of the Harfoots (and other Hobbit folk) in Middle-earth, a people of much greater diversity than you might think. After that, a rundown of Tolkien's changing views on the origins and nature of the Orcs, plus their history through the First and Second Ages before the big – in more ways than one – finale on Trolls and Balrogs! Hold the wings, please.

This is a recording of one of the sessions on Tolkien held this summer, 2021. Of the topics considered, the nature of dragons is paramount. What is a dragon? Tolkien said "I desired dragons with a profound desire. Of course, I in my timid body did not wish to have them in the neighborhood . . . . But the world that contained even the imagination of Fáfnir was richer and more beautiful, at whatever cost of peril.” Tolkien's dragons are of the Western variety. Treasure hording, highly intelligent, they cannot ignore riddles but are inhuman in their destructive nature and tend to spread despair & half-truths through their greed and hatred. The English word, "dragon", derives (via Middle English, Old French, and Latin) from Ancient Greek δράκων drákōn, "serpent, dragon", from δέρκομαι, "I see", ἒδρακον, "I saw", δἐδορκα, "I have seen" (in various senses); hence perhaps "sharp-sighted one"; or because a snake's eyes seem to be always open. The Greek word probably derives from an Indo-European base derk- meaning "to see"; the Sanskrit root dŗç- also means "to see". Dragons, therefore, have to do with vision, insight, wisdom. They are "the final test of heroes" as professor Tolkien wrote. The encounter with a Western dragon poses a tremendous challenge but the reward for success, as Dr. Jordan Peterson points out, is riches beyond compare. Bilbo, we find, encounters the dragon under Lonely Mountain, but not necessarily in the way we might expect. Listen in to found out. Famous Western (European) Dragons 1. Mushkhushshu - Babylonian from Akkadian from Sumerian “MUŠ.ḪUS, 'reddish snake', sometimes also translated as 'fierce snake'. 'splendor serpent' (
