For the latest Scots Whay Hae! podcast Ali spoke to author and singer/songwriter Malachy Tallack about his new novel and album, both of which are called That Beautiful Atlantic Waltz. Malachy tells us which came first, and how they developed, before giving a brief synopsis of the novel. He talks about the two strands and explains why these were stories he wanted to tell, before discussing his central characters of Sonny and Jack, and how their tales are intertwined. The two then talk about the album, which are 'Jack's songs' and how the idea to record them came about, the inspirations behind it, the importance of country music to Shetland, and the complexities of recording songs written by a fictional character. Also under discussion is the influence of music in our formative years, the importance of place, how seemingly insignificant words or events can be carried for a lifetime, the differences between contentment and happiness, and a whole lot more. That Beautiful Atlantic Waltz is one of the best novels of the year, and also a wonderful collection of songs, and it was a pleasure to be able to talk to Malachy about both. Each is worthy of your attention, but when taken together you have something very special indeed. For full details, including all the ways to listen, head to https://www.scotswhayhae.com

Malachy Tallack speaks with Caroline Sanderson about how moving to Shetland as a child influenced his writing preoccupations, particularly his sense of place and the role of belonging , and how these things have come to imbue his varied fiction and non-fiction writing.

Folge direkt herunterladen
Episode #7 welcomes a guest who's not just a travel writer, an author of fiction, a chronicler of histories, an editor, and a passionate student of people and landscape… but an accomplished singer-songwriter too. So perhaps “wordsmith” doesn't quite encompass everything that makes Malachy Tallack tick (any more concise single-word summaries gratefully received). That aside, Malachy tells the podcast about his travels along the 60th parallel, time spent researching the much-celebrated 60 Degrees North (2015), the wonder and fascination of islands that have been un-discovered (as opposed to “undiscovered”), and even finds time for fresh fiction, a music career, fly-fishing and some inspiring words about Assynt, Shetland and the Lofoten Islands. Enjoy! Visit malachytallack.com for all your Malachy Tallack needs, unless it's his music you're looking for in which case it's malachymusic.com.
‘When we read and write, when we love our fellow creatures, when we walk on the beach, when we just listen and notice, we are not little cogs in the machine, but part of the remedy.’ These luminous words by Kathleen Jamie form part of the introduction to Antlers of Water, an outstanding collection of contemporary Scottish writing about nature and landscape. The generosity of Jamie’s approach as editor of the collection goes beyond the stellar selection of contributors such as Amy Liptrot, Karine Polwart and Malachy Tallack: she also invokes the agency of readers to make a difference. ‘If, by reading, you are encouraged or confirmed in your love of the natural world, if you’re inspired simply to… look outside, then our job is done.’ In a discussion recorded live at the 2020 Book Festival and led by the BBC's Clare English, Jamie is joined by award-winning journalist Chitra Ramaswamy as well as visual artist and writer Amanda Thomson – both contributors to the anthology – to discuss Scotland, landscape and the more-than-human world around us.

What makes going from A to B an adventure, not a destination? A map can show you the layout of a place, but its emotional geography is something that takes a bit more time and skill to uncover. Leon McCarron is a Northern Irish adventurer, filmmaker, writer and motivational speaker, who believes in the importance of a slower pace to truly understand the world and its people, whether walking 3000 miles across China or trekking 1000 miles across the Empty Quarter. Malachy Tallack is a writer, editor and singer-songwriter from Scotland whose non-fiction books Sixty Degrees North and The Un-Discovered Islands both fuse nature writing, history and memoir. The discuss their adventures at Emirates Airline Festival of Literature 2019.
04/05/2019: Today’s soundtrack is by the 1974 poet laureate of Colorado and inspired by Leon McCarron and Malachy Tallack’s conversation at the 2019 Emirates Airline Festival of Literature about unconventional journeys.
“Shetland: a place of sheep and soil, of harsh weather, close ties and an age-old way of life. But times do change – island inhabitants die, or move away. In the wind and sun and storms from the Atlantic, these islanders must decide: what is left of us when the day's work is done, the children grown, and all our choices have been made?” Malachy Tallack’s books – the erudite and observing Sixty Degrees North and the fantastical The Un-Discovered Islands – have established him as a writer to watch. Hear him speak about The Valley at the Centre of the World, his first novel.
Alice Black, co-founder and director of the Alice Black gallery, joins us to discuss a season of performance art that’s taking over the space. We also hear from musical polymath David Toop on the occasion of the republication of his literary study into ambience, ‘Oceans of Sound’. Plus, we talk to author and writer Malachy Tallack about how his background on the Shetland Islands came to inform his latest novel.
