It's easy to minimize what we do as therapists and look at all the years of schooling, experience, and skills as something anyone can do, but there is so much value in what you offer to the world (and what you can offer to yourself if you just give yourself permission to create and live the life you want). In this episode, I talk with Marquita Johnson, therapist, dating coach, motivational speaker, business speaker, author, and amazing single mom, about her experiences building a business, caring for and conserving energy as an entrepreneur, and giving permission to herself to create and seize life-changing opportunities. We talk about: how Marquita brought dreams to reality by giving herself permission to break the mold and take the leap to follow passions and ideas how boundaries and roadblocks are things that you often set for yourself because of impostor syndrome, but you can tear them down how the question, "can I do it?" is often a sign for Marquita that she probably should how doing something first (or new) can be a catalyst for change and people to follow how each therapist has uniqueness and value in the way they do therapy (and that's their secret sauce and superpower) Marquita's passion for working with millennials balancing mommyhood as a single parent with entrepreneurship More about Marquita: Marquita Johnson is a graduate of Mercer University with a Master of Science in Community Counseling and Master of Divinity. Marquita received her undergraduate degree from Georgia State University in Psychology & Sociology. She is a licensed professional counselor in Georgia, nationally certified counselor, board certified tele-mental health counselor, and certified professional counselor supervisor. Marquita is also a brainspotting practitioner. Her specialties include women issues, dating, divorce, spirituality, and step-families. Currently, Marquita enjoys private practice work and supporting the Faculty & Staff Assistance Program at Emory University. She is currently pursuing her doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision at Walden University. -------------------------------------------------------

Sherry and Carla kick off the week discussing their thoughts on if candles are a generational thing and take a Love Fix question on how to know what it is you really need when you're focused so much on your partner. Then, they welcome Certified Counselor Marquita Johnson, who has over 10 years of practice and a large set of tools to use to help her clients heal and realize their potential. She talks about what millennials are doing wrong in love, how we can use technology to our advantage, and why we need to be accountable for what baggage WE bring into the relationship.   What You'll Hear In This Episode:   Millennials don't want the relationships their parents had, so what is it that they really want? What are some telltale signs that it is time to say goodbye in a relationship? Stop trying to convince someone that you are worthy! We have the responsibility of working on our own baggage and wounds, so it isn't an endless cycle of both people getting triggered by one another. You define love on YOUR terms, not by society's or even by the people around you. Want a fun way to explore your relationship? Check out Marquita's relationship conversation cards,  along with ways to work with Sherry and Carla on overcoming codependency, dating, healing from toxic relationships and gaining confidence. What we can learn from J-Lo and her love life! Someone can add to your life, but it's important to take responsibility for your own happiness and security.   Tweetables: If someone is having a need or a fear, it's not about you. - Sherry Expectations are resentments waiting to happen. - Carla We can not change someone's mind or convince someone that you are worthy. - Marquita If someone can't see your worth it doesn't mean you aren't worthy, it means the person just can't see it. - Marquita Even if you are not codependent, you are taught to fall in love with fantasy. - Carla I can't make someone responsible for unpacking my bags that I came into the relationship with. - Marquita   Connect with Us!   The Love Fix | @thelovefixpodcast Wake up Recovery for Codependency, Love Addiction, and Toxic Relationships — $1 trial membership The Love Fix Relationship Quiz     Sign up for a Connection call with Sherry https://sherrygaba.com/coaching/life-coaching/    Find Out More:    Sherry Website | Instagram | Facebook | Love Smacked | Wake Up Recovery for Codependents and Toxic Relationships     Carla Website | Instagram | Facebook | Contagious Love | Online Dating Bootcamp    Marquita Johnson  Website | Being The One | Instagram   Today's episode is sponsored by Carla's book Contagious Love: Break Free from Codependency for Damn Good and Sherry's book Love Smacked: How To Stop the Cycle of Relationship Addiction and Codependency To Find Everlasting Love.  Thanks to Contagious Love and Love Smacked for sponsoring this episode.

In this episode, we'll hear from Atlanta based therapist Marquita Johnson who, after 10 years in private practice, got off insurance panels and raised her fees. I was so curious to speak with her and find out what changed and how she made this transition. So often I hear from listeners one (or several) of a million different excuses as to why they're not able to implement these changes in their practice. This episode with Marquita, a single mother to her son, was a breath of fresh air. I want to break through the excuses of why some people believe these changes are easier for others.  These changes are hard for EVERYONE. Because it's hard work to challenge our money mindset, build generational wealth, and change our money narrative. BUT it's possible. In this episode, we'll deep dive into Marquita's story - her money narratives, her SES, her life as a single mom, her fears - and how despite all these factors, she was able to implement something different that has had a phenomenal impact on her practice. In this episode, Marquita will share: 3 steps she took to get off insurance panels and raise her fees; How she knew it was time to make a change in her practice;  How she embraced her worth and raised her fees accordingly;  The ways she challenges the money narratives she was taught growing up in a blue-collar home;  How the changes she's implemented have impacted her son and her life as a single mother; The impact these changes have had on her clinical work; And how she turned her whole practice around in just 4 months. We look at tele-mental health and other ways that technology can positively impact therapy. It’s time to reimagine therapy and what it means to be a therapist. To support you as a whole person and a therapist, your hosts, Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy talk about how to approach the role of therapist in the modern age.
