Reviewing a Disciplinary Case on Suicidality, Erotic Transference, and Between-Session Communication: How do therapists hold appropriate boundaries? Curt and Katie chat about a disciplinary case against Dr. Eric Bergeman, highlighting key ethical concerns for therapists. They explore documentation practices, therapist responsibilities, and boundary management, particularly in cases involving suicidality and erotic transference. The conversation underscores the importance of clear treatment planning, proper record-keeping, and ethical decision-making to avoid legal and professional consequences. This is a continuing education podcourse. Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! In this podcast episode we talk about suicidality, erotic transference, between-session communication, and documentation Therapists are given conflicting advice on when their duties to patients begin, how much they are expected to be available to clients outside of sessions, how they are to approach between-session communications, and how to document such communications. This episode explores a disciplinary case where the California Board of Psychology investigated a therapist's responses to a client that filed a complaint about the therapist's treatment. What therapists need to know about ethical boundaries and disciplinary actions: The importance of proper documentation and clear treatment planning. How to respond to client suicidality in real-time, including assessment and intervention. Managing erotic transference with ethical boundaries and consultation. The role of Board of Psychology investigations in evaluating therapist conduct. Key Takeaways from Dr. Bergeman's Disciplinary Case: The Board of Psychology found gross negligence due to poor documentation, inadequate diagnosis, and lack of clear therapeutic boundaries. Dr. Bergeman failed to properly address the client's suicidality and borderline personality disorder, leading to ethical concerns. Consultation with another therapist revealed concerns about Bergeman's treatment approach and lack of structured intervention. The Board initially sought a fine of $103,000, later reducing it to $10,363, citing good intentions but significant professional oversights. California regulators are prepared to walk away from strict licensing rules that require accountants to earn the equivalent of five years of college to qualify. The California Board of Accountancy has proposed reforms that would grant the certified public accountant license to candidates with a traditional bachelor's degree plus two years of work experience in addition to passing the CPA exam. The proposal would unwind current rules that call for 150 hours of college credits to qualify—a requirement that is seen as a barrier to entering the profession. Instead, the board's draft legislation would strip the specific number of college credits from its rulebook to focus on the degree earned or the candidate's coursework. State lawmakers would have to approve any changes. Bloomberg Tax senior reporter Amanda Iacone spoke with Dominic Franzella, the executive officer of the state accountancy board, about how California's proposal matches up against related reforms the American Institute of CPAs introduced in September and whether the state's plans could help address the shrinking pipeline of future accountants. This episode is a replay of Episode 30 which originally aired on March 18, 2024. In this episode of French Insider, Greg Berk, a partner at Sheppard Mullin, joins host Inès Briand to discuss immigration and business travel to the United States, including the particulars of the ESTA visa waiver program, obtaining an O-1 visa, H-1B visa, or green card, and what travelers can expect from the CPB upon entry.   What We Discussed in This Episode: What is an ESTA visa waiver? How long can you stay in the U.S. on an ESTA waiver? How soon can someone come back to the U.S. with an ESTA waiver? Who needs a work visa, and what types of work visas are available? How specialized must an individual be to qualify for a special talent (0-1) visa? What is an H-1B visa? When should French entities start planning to send individuals to the U.S.? When does someone need a green card? How do they obtain one? Are there tax implications when obtaining a green card? Can a green card be relinquished if the holder leaves the U.S.? Why does the CPB occasionally check social media accounts? Can the CPB deny a visa holder entry? Why might someone be called in for a secondary inspection? How should they deal with this? How can travel to Cuba or another restricted country impact an ESTA? Would it affect other types of visas?   About Greg Berk Greg Berk, a partner in Sheppard Mullin's Labor and Employment Practice Group, is based in Orange County, California. In this episode of Nurses Uncorked, Nurse Jessica and Nurse Erica introduce a new segment called Whiteboard News Updates. They discuss various current topics related to nursing and healthcare. The first topic is about Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who was a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy and recently released from prison. She is now pregnant and facing controversy regarding her use of a home fetal doppler without medical training. This can lead to misinterpretation and/or a false sense of security. The second topic is about a nurse practitioner in Colorado who is under investigation for performing unsupervised invasive procedures at a fertility clinic. The third topic involves the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Nurses and healthcare professionals have recently been terminated as a result of posting their political views on social media. Nurse Erica and Jessica emphasize the importance of not violating social media policies and the potential repercussions it can have on one's job. The final topic deals with the controversial California Board of Nursing Maximus program, a recovery and alternative to discipline program for nurses with addiction, diversion or mental health issues. The program has faced criticism for its frequent changing of policies without communication, high costs, and lack of support for nurses. Nurses in the program have shared their horror stories of the program, facing financial burdens, and experiencing mental health issues. The California Board of Nursing has been called upon to address the issues with the Maximus program and provide better support for nurses.   Thank you to our sponsor, DeleteMe! She shares tactics for mitigating risk and supporting proactive prenatal and neurodevelopmental care through nutrients. She highlights research behind anti-brain antibodies in pregnant moms, details folate receptor antibodies, offers lab recommendations, and explores the need for dairy in most diets. Ari also covers the risks associated with maternal infections, the supplements and lab tests that she recommends for her patients, and the danger of a zinc-copper imbalance. In 1997, a pair of sisters in Elk Grove, California endured the unthinkable. Their mother and stepfather, Barbara and Larry Carrasco, abused methamphetamine and somehow became certain that Barbara's daughters, 13-year-old Jessica and five-year-old Alexia, were possessed by demons and vampires. How do you treat 2 patients an hour? As a business coach to new practitioners, I get this question SO often! So… I called in my friend Megan who purchased a very busy clinic as a relatively new practitioner and basically started her career treating multiple patients an hour. Today I'm delighted to be bringing to the show a conversation about supporting LGBTQIA+ kids, and I have the perfect guest to explore this topic with, John Sovec, a therapist, author, and nationally recognized expert on creating affirmative support for LGBTQIA+ teens and their families during the coming out process. I wanted to talk with John because these conversations are becoming increasingly prevalent within our neurodivergent communities. During our conversation, John explained what “coming out” means and why it's such a significant and ongoing event for any LGBTQIA+ person. He also shared his thoughts on the high correlation between neurodivergence and gender nonconformity, how parents can best respond when their child comes out to them, why affirmation is more important than acceptance, and why it's so important that parents honor their own process as they navigate understanding their child's identity. About John SovecJohn Sovec, MA, LMFT is a nationally recognized expert on creating affirmative support for LGBTQIA+ teens and their families during the coming out process. Ward Connerly: SCOTUS allows universities to use affirmative action in ‘perverse' way, legally discriminate by race

Ward Connerly, President of American Civil Rights Institute, discusses the harmful effects that the Supreme Court's ruling on affirmative action in universities has done to American society. Connerly says that this began, “because the American people, primarily whites during this period so that I felt a certain sense of guilt I think it was that's how I would describe it John, and they wanted to allow diversity to occur. This diversity sounds so does seductive, surely we want diversity but we want non-discrimination more than I think we want diversity. But we didn't fight back, we didn't push back, we bent the knee to the center cause for celebrating our diversity. And as a result, we've broken the law in many cases.” The long time critic of affirmative action comments, that initially when “the Court allowed the use of race and said that it was a matter of a compelling state interest, diversity that is, that ruling has allowed universities to use race in a very perverse sort of way.” Commenting, “the court said you could use race as one of many factors, but in the real world, one of many factors means everything, because when you're looking at a person, and deciding whether to use their race, nothing else really matters, but their color, and thats what we are faced with right now.” Connerly goes on to say that President Biden promised to be the most progressive president if he won, and that's what he has accomplished. “President Biden and Vice President Harris have adopted the pursuit of equity as their motto, and that means race this and race that and it's a far cry from what President Kennedy said which was, that race has no place in American life or the law. So this is bad for the country, really bad.” Connerly, who served on the University of California Board of Regents, uses the school as an example, saying “at the bottom of virtually every legal document of the university, it says the university does not discriminate based on race, sex, color, sexual orientation, etcetera.” “It's a lie, we discriminate big time, because the university has a view in its mind of what the student body ought to look like, what the faculty ought to look like, what the staff ought to look like, and they do their dastardly deeds and nobody fights it.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
