Nik Young, LMFT, and Alyssa Najera, LCSW, sit down with Jeff Pishney, CEO and Founder of Love Stanislaus County and Love Our Cities. Jeff shares how the initial city-wide volunteer effort, Love Modesto (based in Stanislaus County, California), became the working model for helping over 100 cities create their own city-wide volunteer efforts and year-round initiatives. Tune in to hear more about how Love Stanislaus County and Love Our Cities got started, how city-wide volunteerism is building connections and community, and how to get started in your own city. For practical steps on starting or expanding your city's volunteer efforts, check out Jeff's recent book, Love Our Cities: How a City-Wide Volunteer Day Can Unite and Transform Your Community, co-authored by Eric Jung. Interview with Jeff Pishney “Jeff Pishney is the CEO and Founder of Love Stanislaus County and Love Our Cities. Officially beginning as a non-profit organization in 2014, these city-wide volunteer days and other initiatives have helped over 100 cities and have had over 239,000 volunteers since beginning in 2009. Jeff recognizes that more sustainable solutions are needed beyond volunteer days in order to see our cities thrive. His efforts have evolved to championing ongoing volunteerism, collaboration among leaders and initiating programs for Neighbors, Schools, Kids and Seniors. Jeff grew up in Iowa, went to college and graduate school in Virginia and has been in Modesto, CA since 1995. Prior to being CEO, Jeff was a pastor for almost 20 years. As a college pastor, Jeff started to get a vision for his community. This vision grew when he became the outreach pastor during which Love Modesto began. Jeff and his wife, Karen, have been married for 18 years and have three children. Besides loving his family, Jeff is involved at his children's activities, passionate about justice issues and cheering on his Iowa Hawkeye” (bio from lovestanislauscounty.org). In April 2023, Jeff Pishney and co-author Eric Jung released their book, “Love Our Cities: How a city-wide volunteer day can unite and transform your community.” You can reach Jeff Pishney at: lovestanislauscounty.org loveourcities.org jeff@lovestanislauscounty.org IG @lovestanislauscounty IG @loveourcities Resources mentioned: We've pulled together any resources mentioned in this episode and put together some links: Purchase Love Our Cities: How a city-wide volunteer day can unite and transform your community on Amazon. We've mentioned some saints before here on the Mourning Glory Podcast including St. Faustina, St, Elizabeth Ann Seton, and recently touched on St. Dymphna. Some saints are more well-known than others like St. Teresa of Avila, St. Catherine of Sienna and St. John Bosco, just to name a few. However, one saint in particular, St. Therese of Lisieux seems to generate a mixed reaction. Yet, she suffered greatly throughout her life and is an inspiration for remaining faithful through grief and sorrow.About St. ThérèseSt. Thérèse of Lisieux was born January 2, 1873, Alençon, France and died September 30, 1897. She was canonized on May 17, 1925 and her feast day is celebrated on October 1. Therese was a Carmelite nun whose service to her Roman Catholic order, although outwardly unremarkable, was later recognized for its exemplary spiritual accomplishments. She was named a doctor of the church by Pope John Paul II in 1997. She is a patron saint of missionaries, florists, pilots, and priests. She is also invoked on behalf of the sick and is commonly referred to as the “little flower”.So what Is it about her that generates mixed reactions? Is it the fact that some think of her as a little girl dancing around with flowers in the French countryside, singing songs? What is it about her “little ways” that people DO respond to and what makes her so influential and adored by many?Guest BioRosaline (Roz) Cruz-Rine, MA, MFT has been a Licensed Marriage Family Therapist for over 19 years. She has treated Children, Adolescents, Adults, Families, and Groups in all areas pertaining to Mental Health. Having recently closed her private practice of 17 years, she now works for St. Michael's Catholic Church in Stockton, CA. as the Director of Adult Faith Formation which began as a volunteer position over 10 years ago. She continues clinical work with referred clients and has begun a faith-based grief support group in her parish. Her work continues to include Trauma, Mood Disorders, Personality Disorders, and other areas which can result in Grief and/or Loss. She is the mother of seven adult children, and a grandmother of four grandsons, Roz, and her husband, Kevin, live in Stockton, Ca with their youngest son, John, their three spirited dogs, and one very demanding cat. She enjoys gardening, and is devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to Mama Mary, is a self avowed clotheshorse, and must have coffee with her favorite creamer daily.Links from the showSociety of the Little FlowerStory of a Soul: The Autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux (the Little Flower)The Context of Holiness: Psychological and Spiritual Reflections on the Life of St. Therese of Lisieux by Marc FoleyJournaling QuestionsWhere do you see joy in your life?Reflect on today's episode. Today With Elizabeth Earnshaw: Today on The Inner Edit I am joined by Elizabeth Earnshaw, LMFT, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and trusted relationship teacher. She is also a business owner, an author, a podcast segment host, and a content creator…you might know her as @lizlistens. Liz is one of the original Instagram therapists, but as the platform and algorithms have changed, so has her mindset about how she uses the space. Listen now to hear how Liz remains true to herself, trustworthy to her clients, and ethical in her career as a therapist while sharing her message online. Pick It Apart [2:33] Elizabeth shares why she decided to start her Instagram page and its aim of introducing therapy to people who might not realize what it is or how it can help. [8:05] Elizabeth and Christie discuss how Instagram has changed, along with how (and why) Elizabeth continues to use the platform in ways that align with her values. [18:24] Christie has an AHA moment, realizing that Instagram began to lose its appeal for her when it became something she “should” do. [25:45] Christie asks Elizabeth her thoughts on the pressure put on creators with large platforms to take a stance on every issue in the world. [32:55] Elizabeth explains how taking public stances as a therapist can limit what her clients feel comfortable sharing. [40:51] Elizabeth speaks about taking care of herself and her nervous system responses to negative comments on social media by setting boundaries. [41:33] Christie asks Tomi about how she responds to current events with her audience. Christie Rocha's and Elizabeth Earnshaw's Ah-Ha Moments “For years, I have always enjoyed [Instagram]. I've always liked it. And I think when it shifted to a ‘you should do this' is when it starts feeling like ‘ugh'.” – Christie Rocha “Once it became the obligation to say things a specific way…that obligation took the joy away…I'm only going to [post] now when I feel like it's something I really want to say or I feel confident about it, and it's aligned with what feels good. And I'm really trying not to look at metrics.” – Elizabeth Earnshaw “[As a therapist], any [public] stance that you take can be read by your client…and that can limit the way they talk to you.” – Elizabeth Earnshaw “It's much more powerful to talk about what you believe instead of what you don't believe.” – Elizabeth Earnshaw More About Elizabeth Earnshaw Elizabeth Earnshaw is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, Certified Gottman Therapist, Clinical Fellow of the AAMFT, and the author of I Want This To Work: An Inclusive Guide to Navigating the Most Difficult Relationship Issues We Face in The Modern Age". Hey, sis! Long time, no talk. I took a summer sabbatical, which wasn't intended to go beyond September. But I'm back today with a special pop-up episode. As we go into another year, let's not just examine our financial, physical or career goals. Albeit those are important, we also need to look at other areas of our lives. Mental health. Prioritizing our time. Making rest a necessity. Implementing self-care. And assessing the health of our relationships. Yes, we need #RelationshipGoals. Not the ones celebrated on IG or celeb couples folks long to emulate. I'm talking about making the decision to evaluate the quality of relationships with those around us. Whether it's romantically, among friends, in the workplace, within a membership organization, unhealthy relationships can exist in various spaces. A recent buzzword regarding these types of interactions is “toxic”. One definition from Merriam-Webster describes toxic as “extremely harsh, malicious, or harmful.” And toxic behavior is harmful to one's well-being; it can be a form of emotional abuse. While there may not be bruises on the body, there is hurt beyond the surface. Whether if it's derogatory language, stonewalling or gas lighting, these actions within the confinement of a relationship is damaging to the person on the receiving end. In this episode, we chop it up with Licensed Marriage Family Therapist, Nadirah Habeebullah. She is the owner of Healing Our Trauma, which specializes in trauma and attachment therapy services. We discuss the signs of toxic relationships, how to identify harmful patterns, the impact of emotional trauma and more. So lean in for “Sis, it's Toxic: Identifying Unhealthy and Abusive Relationships.”
What are the common reasons people enter couples therapy? How can you improve communication with your partner? What are the Four Horseman and why does research show they are what can cause a relationship to fail? What are the most common reasons relationships fail and is there something people can do to prevent those things? The role of core values, communication styles, and love languages on relationships. Whether you have been in a long-term relationship or are in a new one, you will learn from this fascinating interview. Join us as we dig into boundaries, burnout, and being yourself. Pick It Apart [1:43] Bryana talks about her journey and how she never intended to grow an audience and community, but she suddenly did. [9:10] Bryana tells the saga of why she rebranded to Conscious Mommy and what social media means in that. [21:47] Bryana and Christie discuss the expectation on mental health providers to give information online without charge. [30:27] Bryana talks about the challenge of social media algorithms, how that can lead to burnout, and what she does to recover from burnout. [38:05] Christie and Bryana discuss the social responsibility of viral creators and influencers. [47:56] Bryana states that we are all called to be our authentic selves, and explains how she brings her authentic self to her online presence. Christie Rocha's and Bryana Kappadakunnel's Ah-Ha Moments “I'm not going to put myself out there in ways that are inauthentic to me, just for clicks, or likes or views. That's just not the life that I personally feel comfortable and confident living.” – Bryana Kappadakunnel “Being a creator on a big social media platform, you are owned by that social media company. And you cannot have your business rely on Instagram or Facebook, they need to be avenues to funnel a business but you cannot rely on it. Because in a second, and I mean that literally, it can be completely swept away from you.” – Bryana Kappadakunnel “Check your source.” – Christie Rocha “Knowing yourself, knowing your values, knowing what you stand for and how you want to show up—that's the most important thing.” – Christie Rocha More About Bryana Kappadakunnel Bryana Kappadakunnel is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (90464), an Infant-Family Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist, and a Perinatal Mental Health Specialist-Certified. A good apology does not blame, it is not passive aggressive, and it does not avoid responsibility. A good apology acknowledges mistakes, takes ownership, has a healthy use of “I Statements,” and is a genuine attempt to changing behavior. A good apology has the power to model effective communication and solid interpersonal skills for those peers, colleagues, partners, or kids experiencing or observing the apology. This episode is all about apologies! Mental health professionals Nik Young and Alyssa Najera share a few ways of how not to apologize and give some solid examples of what a good apology can look like. Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: Do you ever find yourself falling into a trap of thinking negative thoughts? Have you ever wondered how to control your negative thoughts? It is possible, and that's what my guest, Tracy Taris, and I talk about in this episode: how to stop negative thoughts. Quotables from the episode: Our negative thinking usually comes as a result of our life experiences, beliefs, and messages we come into agreement with. Healing comes in layers. When we find it hard to hear from God, we need to assess what is God competing with? Are we quieting distractions to hear from him? Any thought not of God has to obey the name of Jesus. Negative thinking reflects some pain point that needs to be dealt with. We have a tendency to perseverate on negative thoughts, but instead, we can choose to perseverate on positive thoughts consistent with Philippians 4:8. Scripture References: Genesis 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” (ESV) Mark 9:23 Jesus said to him, “What do you mean ‘if'? If you are able to believe, all things are possible to the believer.” (TPT) John 4:42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.” (NIV) Recommended Resources: Many Voices, One Truth by Tracy Taris Walk This Way by Byron Parson Today is Going to be a Good Day: 90 Promises to Start Your Day Off Right by Dr. Michelle Bengtson YouVersion 7-Day Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day YouVersion 7-Day Devotional, Today is Going to be Another Good Day Breaking Anxiety's Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety's Grip Free Study Guide Free 7-Day YouVersion Bible Reading Plan for Breaking Anxiety's Grip Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor's Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Hope Prevails Bible Study by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Trusting God Through Cancer 1 Trusting God Through Cancer 2 Revive & Thrive Women's Conference Subdue Stress and Anxiety: Fifteen Experts Offer Comprehensive Tools in Ten Minutes a Day. The last two times I have presented on sex therapy and faith transitions at the Mormon Mental Health Association, I have received a similar critique that goes something along the lines of: “I wish you wouldn't swear during your presentations. It's unprofessional.” Since, these evaluations are confidential/private, I thought I would turn my response into a podcast so we could have a wider discussion about the taboos of swearing, some of the reasons they exist, and why my swearing is actually an intentional part of how I present. Here to help me have this discussion is Aimee Heffernan, LMFT, CST, a dear friend and colleague who has much in common with me in regards to our professional background. She is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, a Certified Sex Therapist, a board member of the Mormon Mental Health Association, comes from the same high-demand religious background I do, and specializes in religious sexual shame. "You don't have to tell your whole story which can be painful. The beauty of that is you don't even have to have all the memories and details of your whole story and still be able to get some good work done. The beauty of that is you don't even have to be ready to talk about your story as long as you're ready to go inward because a lot of the work is happening inward. We're just prompting the brain and the body to do what it does naturally, which is to heal." - Melissa Dumaz, LMFT Melissa Dumaz is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, Best Selling Author of The Love Challenge, co-host of The HatsPodcast and founder of You Help You, her own practice. Have you ever heard of tapping and thought that is way too “out there” for me? Well, did you know there is actual science backing up this technique for stress management? My guest today shares everything from the importance of minerals to how the iron recycling system works. Today's guest, Sarah Emily Speers, is an Alternative Healing Arts Practitioner, Empowered Eating Coach, Reiki Master & trained psychotherapist. She specializes in using energy healing modalities- including Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Reiki and the Emotion Code- to help empathic women and entrepreneurs experience freedom from food and eating issues, emotional overwhelm, stress/anxieties and limiting self-beliefs. With over 10 years of experience in the mental health, coaching and fitness industries, Sarah Emily has worked with thousands of people to help them improve their health behaviors, mindset, body/self-image and self-care practices. She formerly was the Director of the Behavioral Health Program at Premier Fitness Camp, developed and ran an intensive treatment program for binge eating disorder at the University of California San Diego, and worked in private practice as a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in California. Sarah Emily holds an M.A. in Marriage & Family Therapy from The University of San Diego and a B.A. in Psychology from Syracuse University. Join us as we delve into an introduction to the Emotional Freedom Technique to help manage stress! Have you thought tapping or another stress reduction technique was silly, but then you ended up loving it? Tell me about it in the comments! In this episode: What is Emotional Freedom Technique (also known as Tapping)? How does it work and why is it effective? Research backing up how well ETF works How can you use this tool to benefit you? Example of a basic tapping process/mantra to use Quotes “When you're tapping on these points in the body, it's actually sending a signal to your brain to let your brain and body know that you can relax. And there's even studies that show that tapping is going to reduce cortisol levels in the body.” [1:59] “It's all about fully accepting all parts of you. And a lot of times we're fighting against these parts of ourselves, we're frustrated with ourself. We don't want to look at or deal with these things that bother us. And so, rather than us ignoring them or avoiding them, we fully bring everything into the light and we just acknowledge what is true…and when we can accept something that's there that we don't love, it's actually through the acceptance that we're more easily able to release it.” [12:30] Links Connect with Sarah Emily online RESEARCH – Clinical EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Improves Multiple Physiological Markers of Health Follow Sarah Emily on Instagram | Join her Facebook group Get a free tapping training HERE Check out this beginner intro to tapping course that teaches the basics of tapping if you want to learn the technique
