The real Mary Leonard was probably someone who had given up “the good life” after realizing, during her time in jail, that the powerless women of her time were getting a raw deal — and determined to do something about it. (Portland, Multnomah County; 1900s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/1205d-mary-leonard-legal-mother-teresa.html)
Many historians, eager to see in her the caricature of the nagging, garrulous fishwife and gold-digging black widow, have missed the real story of Mary Leonard — and done both her, and the historical record, a disservice. (The Dalles, Wasco County; 1880s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/1205b-mary-leonard-murder-trial-part1.html)

Meet our Guest Mary Leonard "Mary Leonard is originally from Chicago, IL. She is the daughter of Bernard and Margaret (DeBiase) Leonard and the youngest of 3, she has 2 older brothers that are 13 and 11 yrs older. Her father was a Lt of the River Forest Fire Dept in Chicago and her mother was a homemaker. She always knew that she would be in the entertainment field after going to the movies and seeing "The Sound of Music". Mary was a dancer, until an unfortunate accident which resulted in her dance career coming to an abrupt end. She has always enjoyed bringing smiles to people's faces through her sense of humor. She has the ability to transform a character's feelings and dramatic situations & make it real. Mary can play that astounding role & make you feel as though your heart is going to be ripped from your chest because you can feel her characters pain, just as well as her having that "dry comedic sense of humor". She feels very fortunate that her career has flourished. She is able to do dialects, most of her own stunts, play a variety of sports and musical instruments. Mary is an all around actress who likes to improvise and is easy to work with. She likes to make the projects she's working on fun, believable and meaningful. Her motto is to Be Kind to Each Other, Live, Love, Laugh, Dance and Accept Diversity. She always is there to be a core team-member because she feels the way to succeed is to be there for the complete cast and crew of a production not just for herself. She does not believe in an EGO as she always states that EGO is Edging God Out of your life. She always tries to be a positive influence, as she always says, you never know what someone is facing in their life, therefore if she can bring a smile or an act of kindness she feels that she is walking the talk and somehow passing along hope when one might be feeling hopeless. She believes that EVERYONE is EQUAL and IMPORTANT and wants people to know they are ALL WORTHY. Her hope is to see mankind come together to unite in love, respect and equality for all. Ricky Beard and Mary Leonard were two well-liked teenagers from Akron, Ohio who were dating each other during the summer of 1979. Whether or not it was just a summer romance was yet to be determined, but on the night of Friday August 24, all seemed to still be going great as the two of them went out on a date to the drive-in to see the big hit movie of the summer "The Amityville Horror". However by the next morning when it was discovered by both of the families that neither one of them had come home the night before, they began to worry. A short time later that morning, a call from the police revealed that Ricky's car had been found abandoned in a field a few miles away, but no other sign of the couple could be found. An immediate effort was made by family, friends and law enforcement to locate the missing teens, but despite all the effort, it would take 6 years until the fate Ricky and Mary would be known. On May 29, 1985, their remains were found by a utility crew working on a gravel road near a national park. They had been shot and stabbed and were still wearing the same clothes they had on the night they disappeared. While they had finally been found, there was now the added mystery of who was responsible for their murders and what exactly happened that night that led them to being murdered. There would be different theories that would emerge, including a potential link to a serial killer. However, 40 years later, the person or persons responsible for the murders of Ricky Beard and Mary Leonard are still unknown.
