ON THIS week's podcast, we chat to Barry O'Donovan and Guilherme Alencar about the recent success of the 4 Honor Bantry jiu-jitsu club. The club was only founded in January 2023 and recently came back from the European Championships in Portugal with three gold medals (won by Kawan Azeredo, Juliana Taparica and Mariana Ribeiro) and one bronze (Karel Bubnik). It was a first medal in the adult division for the club (nevermind four). They then won a further two gold medals at the Dublin Open last weekend in the form of Kawan Azeredo and Juan Barcellos.Back home, the club also does an outreach program where they do self-defence and jiu-jitsu classes in schools around West Cork.Club founder O'Donovan and coach Guilherme join us this week to talk about the recent highs and their beginnings. Also on the show, we discuss Cork's agonising one point defeat to Down (1-19 to 2-15) in Newry in the Allianz Football League Division 2.A late two pointer won it for the Ulster side, leaving John Cleary's team in fourth after two games. The hurlers played out a tight and tense draw with old foes Limerick (1-16 apiece) in Páirc Uí Chaoimh while the ladies footballers fell short to Galway in Tuam (2-8 to 0-12).Elsewhere, Jack Crowley impressed off the bench as Ireland beat England in the opening round of the 6 Nations. All this and more on this week's Star Sport Podcast. A live podcast discussion recorded at the 2024 West Cork Chamber Music Festival. Composers Rhona Clarke and Deirdre Gribbin join Jonathan Grimes to discuss their work on ‘Magdalene Songs', an ongoing project by pianist Deirdre Brenner, which features their songs along with songs by Deirdre McKay, all based on testimonies from survivors of the Magdalene Laundries. This discussion took place following a performance the previous evening of the ‘Magdalene Songs' by mezzo Lotte Betts-Dean and Deirdre Brenner. From 1922 to 1996, more than 10,000 women and girls were incarcerated in Ireland's Magdalene Laundries. Operated by four religious orders in 10 locations around the country, these for-profit institutions detained individuals against their will and forced them to work long hours, unpaid, under abusive and humiliating conditions. These institutions committed some of the most serious systematic violations against human rights in Ireland in the 20th century. This work by is intended to honour those women who were so gravely mistreated by church and state in the Magdalene Laundries by giving voice to their experience. Mr Bailey died yesterday after collapsing in Bantry, Co Cork where he lived. He was the chief suspect in the murder of French woman Sophie Toscan du Plantier, who was found murdered outside her west Cork home near Schull in 1996. Our reporter Una Kelly tells us more.

The Letter from Ireland Podcast - with Carina & Mike Collins
In this episode we tell the story of not one, but two, Irish families that came out of the area surrounding the town of Bantry in West Cork, Ireland. The first story shares the story of Francis O'Neill who emigrated to the USA and Chicago - eventually becoming a chief of police. More importantly, he became an avid collector and preserver of traditional Irish music. The healthy state of Irish traditional music today owes a lot to the efforts of this one man.We then follow the Keohane family who left the area in the early 1800s. On arrival in the USA, their name changed to "Cohan" and their grandson is the broadway composer we know today as "George M. Cohan".We also have lots of wonderful Irish songs and music to help us along the way - so do enjoy!Music featured in this episode:"Chief O'Neill's Favourite Hornpipe" performed by Willie Clancy."City of Chicago" performed by Christy Moore."Yankee Doodle Dandy" performed by Jimmy Cagney and Bob Hope.Support the Letter from Ireland Show:Thank you for listening to the Letter from Ireland show. Agatha Christie's The Body in the Library achieves a place amongst the top ten this year, bringing us the second full novel appearance of her famous detective the humble yet deadly Miss Marple. The story revolves around the titular Body in the titular library, a woman found dead in the morning by an unsuspecting household of seeming no relation to the poor girl. As this is a Christie murder mystery we are primed to suspect an elaborate connection, a plot which ties all things together, one which makes all the chess pieces line up like ducks for Mr. Bantry to shoot.

Our Story The Cailleach is the longest living supernatural woman in the Celtic tradition. This goddess is a world builder who consorted with kings and is still associated with the landscape today. Our guest, Kate Chadbourne, brings us a story from County Mayo about a man who chose to test himself by setting out on a walk with the Cailleach. She weaves the threads of many other Cailleach stories throughout our conversation. Our Guest Kate Chadbourne is a singer, harper, and storyteller. She's an award-winning songwriter and poet, a scholar and teacher of Irish language and folklore with a PhD from Harvard who performs at venues throughout New England. Her latest book is “A November Visit,” a gathering of “Novemberish” stories, poems, and seasonal delights, including Irish folklore, a taste of etymology, recipes, and riddles. Kate is the founder of The Bardic Academy, a school for writers, musicians, singers, and young scholars. This year she opened The Celtic Wisdom School which offers online courses that weave together Irish folklore, creativity, and enchantment. If you'd like to learn about Fáilte the Irish Art of Welcome, Kate has a gift for you. Please visit her at http://katechadbourne.com/ (katechadbourne.com) to join the Fáilte Revolution! Our Conversation Samhain is the time for stories of the Cailleach, which “touch the essentials,” and speak to our relationship to the earth, to food, to the elements, to health, longevity, and what you really need in life. We have knowledge of the Cailleach from folk tradition, and also from the 9th century poem, “https://www.maryjones.us/ctexts/beare.html (The Lament of the Hag of Beare).” Recorded by Christian monks, in the poem, the old woman laments “you people only care about money, in my day, it was people we cared about.” An essential resource: Gearóid Ó Crualaoich's https://bookshop.org/a/832/9781859184127 (The Book of the Cailleach: Stories of the Wise-Woman Healer ) The story of https://www.jstor.org/stable/20522313 (Donnchadh Mór )Mac Mánais and the Cailleach in which they engage in a contest to flail the fields (thresh for grain). “You can never trust a woman who relies on a man for all her butter” - a line featured Marisa's retelling of Mongfind's story (https://knotworkstorytelling.com/episode/irish-goddess-queen-witch-ep-2 (Ireland's Forgotten Goddess Queen Witch S1 Ep 2)) The paradoxes of the Cailleach: she is the old woman, and yet she's the essence of joyful busyness and creation. And, the Cailleach as a solitary figure who is also so dedicated to community. Comhar is the Irish word for shared work or mutual assistance. It's reminiscent of the Quechuan term for reciprocity, ayni. A proverb: Arsa Cailleach Ghaoth Dobhair le Cailleach Mhaigh Eo, “An té a bheas go maith duit, bí go maith dó.” (Said the Cailleach of Gweedore to the Cailleach of Mayo: The person who is good to you, you be good to him.) Kate's vision of the The Cailleach's Conspiracy and how it echoes the story told in S2 Ep 9, Life and Death At the Farm Atop the Hill The shapeshifting nature of the Cailleach. Kate's story of meeting a real life cailleach in Bantry when she was 20 The story of the serving girl, the hard hearted woman, and the woman of the roads “To be a great singer is to be a servant of the song.” Our Music Music at the start of the show is by Beth Sweeney and Billy Hardy, a Celtic Fiddle and multi-instrumental duo based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Adam Franklin Francis Finn mac Cumaill Bishop. That has a nice ring to it! Well, it's easier to pronounce than some of these other Celtic names. In this episode, we look at the last section of Celtic mythology: the Fenian Cycle, especially the stories of Finn mac Cumaill. We look at Finn's birth and how he became leader of the Fianna, how he pursued Diarmuid and Gráinne in his old age, and how his son Oisín travelled to the Land of Youth. All this is mixed in with various rants, side topics, and references to samurai for some reason. Follow us on Twitter! @UlmtdOpinions
