In the run up to the election Donald Trump was doggedly pursuing the votes of young men. He courted them, as we described on the show, through interviews with influencers like Joe Rogan and Adin Ross, and Logan Paul. These personalities are part of the so-called manosphere, where anti-feminist, often right-wing politics are the norm. While reporting on this corner of the internet, host Micah Loewinger has been thinking a lot about a conversation he had with Richard Reeves, author of the book of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male is Struggling, Why It Matters and What to Do About It. When Micah spoke to him last year, he said that the mainstream political discourse around men is fundamentally broken. On the Media is supported by listeners like you. Adam and Eve's trespass in Eden was seizing wisdom on their own terms. It was a self-determined wisdom and self-discovered wisdom. The ricochet of this was the reversal of good - their equilibrium and flourishing of their relationship was disordered and disorientated, as seen in Genesis 3.16-19. In this talk, we will consider the meaning of verse 16 in particular - "Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you". How has this been translated and interpreted, and what does it mean for gender relations, the impulse for rule and domination and the Christian understanding of power?

Am I actually in danger or is this just new? Amy Green Smith, host of the Bold-Faced Truth podcast, is here to discuss the four fear responses. How does our fear manifest in a modern world where there's not a large animal chasing us and we have protection from the elements? Now we have the new fear response of fawning that manifests as people pleasing. Our flight response resonates in the way we experience depression. And how does misogyny use our fear responses as a tool to oppression and a way to keep us silent and small? All of it and more is discussed in this episode!Follow us at @menivetoleratedpod on Instagram and https://www.patreon.com/menivetoleratedpod on Patreon for bonus content! Natalie and guest Julia Washington let listeners in on one of their privately most talked about topics. This is an episode designed around the idea of what makes it hard to be a deprogrammed woman who has to live in a world where other women uphold misogynistic beliefs or Patriarchal standards. The women go into what makes them frustrated when it comes to living a life that isn't centered around men but living in a world where centering men is very much the status quo. They also talk about recent current events and how disappointing it is when powerful women who they admire are found to be acting in misogynistic ways or dating misogynists themselves. Celebrities of note they will discuss are Lizzo, Taylor Swift, and Beyonce.Follow us at @menivetoleratedpod on Instagram and https://www.patreon.com/menivetoleratedpod on Patreon for bonus content! Ellen Moore, host of The Slut Show with Ellen Moore, is back on the podcast! She opens up about a recent breakup that resulted in a nine page letter detailing how toxic masculinity had given her partner a misconception of what a relationship should be. The women go into how misogyny has created a culture around dating that allows for men to have their privilege leak over into our romantic lives. They talk about the emotional labor women take on within relationships, how toxic masculinity contributes to gender norms in relationships, and urge listeners to remember that everyone should feel cared for and seen during a romantic partnership.Follow us at @menivetoleratedpod on Instagram and https://www.patreon.com/menivetoleratedpod on Patreon for bonus content! Last season, I did an episode with Dr. Peter LaChapelle about the history of country music and how/when, and why it transitioned from being the music of the working class and poor to being the music of right-wing conservatism. In that episode, we also talked about the history of African influence in country music – which made me wonder why there are so few voices in country music. he told me about Black Opry – an outfit aimed at lifting up and spotlighting black artists in the country music industry. When I think of black musicians in contemporary country music – folks like Charley Pride, Aaron Neville to some degree, and more recently Darius Rucker and Mickey Guyton come to mind. And, that's almost it. When you think of what a juggernaut the country music industry is, how much money it generates, and how many musicians represent the genre – the sheer absence of black artists (and corporate leaders) is kinda shocking. And, especially so, when you consider the fact that country music has roots in Africa and the African American experience.  But, it turns out, this state of affairs is not for lack of black country artists or folks telling their stories or people making space for black voices to be heard at all levels of the country music industry. One of the the projects that Dr. LaChapelle brought to my attention is Black Opry – an outfit aimed at lifting up, spotlighting, and supporting black artists in the country music industry.  So, today, I actually have three guests – and I'm super excited about all of them. I'm talking to the founder and co-director of Black Opry – Holly G. And, I'm also talking to two Black Opry affiliated musicians – Julie Williams and Tae Lewis, both traveling with the Black Opry Revue and both musicians that I'm really into. We talk about how and why Black Opry came to be, some barriers that black performers encounter in the country music industry, how Black Opry provides a space for black country artists to flourish, some projects Black Opry is creating and supporting, and what comes next for Black Opry and for the musicians. Nobody Loses All The Time: Pain, Suffering, Purpose, & Mexico - Sam Peckinpah's Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia Ibrahim & I are thrilled to showcase Sam Peckinpah's most personal film (and the only one he claims was released as intended), Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974). A painfully honest depiction of an American ex-patriot living in Mexico who is given one last chance to get ahead. In the role of his career - and one of the only films in which he was cast as a romantic lead - the great character actor Warren Oates gives his most naked and beautiful performance. Alongside Mexican actress Isela Vega as Elita, Robert Webber and Gig Young as hitmen, Kris Kristofferson, and the great Mexican actor/director Emilio Fernandez, Oates shines as Bennie in a role modeled, almost embarrassingly on director Peckinpah. The less said the better. If you're a fan of Peckinpah than you owe it to yourself to watch his most personal film. Thanks for listening.
