An important element to consider in especially the planning of worship is the threefold aspect of content, purpose, and style.[1] Through the order the church employs and the narrative told within such an order, the story of God should be told as a dialogue between God and his people. Through artistic elements and centered around the text of Scripture, leaders of worship have the responsibility of leading the church in honoring worship of the living triune God. Content includes the material of the Christian worship gathering and the mode in which it is exercised. At a fundamental level, the content of worship is the story of God. The gospel must be proclaimed in Christian worship and not only echoed back to God but told between believers so as not to neglect the horizontal aspect of worship (not only vertical). Moreover, the purpose of worship (broadly speaking) is the glory of God so all occurrences within the worship gathering should serve such a purpose. Filler material, often disguised as spiritual activities (e.g. prayer, speaking and teaching theological truths about congregational songs, etc.), should be erased from worship gatherings as they do not serve an intentional purpose.[2] Content and purpose are nonnegotiable. Style is the only negotiable element of the three discussed here but only to an extent. Style is negotiable insofar as context and culture allows it to be. Leaders of worship should make every effort to ensure the enhancement and conductivity of God's people to worship. If style impacts the ability of the local church to worship, stylistic elements should be reconsidered. Style is not about leaders' (or congregants') preferences. Style is merely a tool to worship God. When content, purpose, and style are intentionally contemplated, the church's worship is built upon a stable foundation. This chapter will examine all three elements with the aim of deliberate planning for leaders of worship. [1] In his book, Planning Blended Worship, Robert Webber includes structure, but this text considers the three mentioned here as an overarching part of structure. [2] That is not to say that those elements cannot exist but rather that leaders of worship should be careful that every word and action employed in the gathering subsists for the sole purpose of worship.
Does it really matter how we worship? Does it make any difference what happens in our chapel each Sunday? The early church believed it made a tremendous difference. Join guest speaker Dr. Carl Peters as he gives a delightful teaching on why the way we worship is critical to our faith.
This week, we discuss two films from American director Blake Edwards. The first is 10 (1979), starring Dudley Moore, Julie Andrews, Robert Webber and Bo Derek. It was considered a trendsetting film at the time of its release and became one of the year's biggest box-office hits. The film follows a middle-aged man who becomes infatuated with a young woman whom he has never met, leading to a comic chase and an encounter in Mexico. The second is Days of Wine and Roses (1962), adapted from the 1958 Playhouse 90 teleplay of the same name. The film features Jack Lemmon, Lee Remick, Charles Bickford and Jack Klugman. It depicts the downward spiral of two average Americans who succumb to alcohol use disorder and attempt to deal with their problems. Dana and Tom with returning guest Kieran B (Host and Creator of the Best Picture Cast; @bestpicturecast on X, IG, Letterboxd) and new guest, Sara Shea (Host and Creator of Shea Cinema; @sheacinema on X, IG) revisit one of the defining legal drama in film, 12 Angry Men (1957): directed by Sidney Lumet, written by Reginald Rose, score by Kenyon Hopkins, cinematography by Boris Kaufman, starring Henry Fonda, Lee J. Cobb, Martin Balsam, Jack Klugman, Jack Warden, and Robert Webber.Plot Summary: "12 Angry Men" is a masterclass in cinematic storytelling, a film that transcends its simple setting to explore the complexities of human nature and the intricacies of the American justice system. Directed by Sidney Lumet, this 1957 classic features a powerhouse performance by Henry Fonda, leading an ensemble cast through a tense, emotionally charged jury deliberation. The plot revolves around twelve jurors tasked with deciding the fate of a young man accused of murder. As the film unfolds almost entirely within the confines of a single jury room, the characters' personal biases, prejudices, and moral dilemmas come to the forefront. Fonda's Juror 8 stands as the lone voice of doubt against an initial consensus of guilt, gradually dismantling the case piece by piece through logical reasoning and relentless questioning."12 Angry Men" remains a timeless reflection on justice, democracy, and the power of reasonable doubt. It's a film that challenges viewers to look beyond the surface and question the assumptions that underpin their beliefs. This is not just a courtroom drama; it is an enduring examination of the moral and ethical struggles that define us all.Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Guest Introductions03:38 The Dreaded New Guest Questions12:36 Background for 12 Angry Men - Cast and Recognition16:03 Relationship(s) to 12 Angry Men24:51 What is 12 Angry Men About?31:13 Is 12 Angry Men Too Idealistic or Naive?36:54 Plot Summary38:32 Did You Know?39:56 First Break40:37 Ask Dana Anything50:57 Who Would You Want to Play You in the Movie of Your Life?55:29 The Stanley Rubric56:55 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:05:00 The Stanley Rubric - Impact and Significance01:18:27 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty01:29:34 Second Break01:39:09 In Memoriam01:42:52 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:48:26 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:52:29 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score/Final Score01:54:07 Remaining Questions for 12 Angry Men02:09:05 Thank You to Our Guests02:12:56 CreditsYou can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast) or find our Facebook page at Greatest Movie of All-Time Podcast. For more on the original episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/51-12-angry-men-1957For more on the episode, go to:
Special thanks to everyone who joined us last week for our recent "All About Aesthetics" livestream, episode 10 focused around Blake Edwards masterful film, "10". Enjoy and see you soon! More on this special stream ,here: For this, the tenth episode of the Aesthetics series, I will focus on the Blake Edwards 1979 masterpiece 10 with the large and unusually terrific cast of Dudley Moore, Bo Derek, Julie Andrews, Robert Webber, Brian Dennehy and Dee Wallace. Although on a more surface level this is Edwards' comedic and even philosophic take on the Sexual Revolution and changing societal mores I will show how it is also compatible with the current discussion in this series of the shift from pre-Rock culture of the 30s-60s, represented by the main character George who is a jazz pianist and composer (!) and the post-Rock era (as well as disco), represented by Bo Derek, the woman to whom George is so deeply drawn. In this sense 10 is as much about aesthetics styles and tastes as it is human relationships. It is also in so many ways quintessentially 1970s filmmaking, a nod back to my 1970s film series while being utterly timeless: one of the most classically and tightly written plays or scripts from Edwards, or really anybody, in the era. #boderek#blakeedwards #henrymancini #muzak #easylistening #sexualrevolution #julieandrews #annettehaven #dudleymoore #deewallace #briandennehy #bartending #cocktailounge #robertwebber #songwriting #hollywood #breakfastattiffanys #audreyhepburn #jacklemmon #waltermatthau #comedy #bedroomfarce #farce #samwasson #vacation #resort #1980s #playboy # #piano #jazz #1979 #1970s #johnritter #california #losangeles #marriage #wedding #hughhefner #polyamory #monogamy #theatre #playwright #sob #petersellars #theparty #leeremick #thedaysofwineandroses #thegreatrace #tonycurtis #thepinkpanther #auterism #warnerborthers #disco #1960s #1950s #dentistry #oralsurgery #slapstick --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mitch-hampton/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mitch-hampton/support

Book Vs. Movie: 12 Angry MenThe 1954 Teleplay Vs. the 1957 Classic FilmThe Margos close out a month of theatre vs. films with 12 Angry Men, which began as a teleplay in 1954 and was adapted to film by Sidney Lumet, with Henry Fonda serving as the lead actor and producer of the 1957 movie. The story centers on a young man who is accused of stabbing his father to death, and a group of 12 jurors must decide if he is guilty of premeditated murder, which carries a death sentence. Writer Reginald Rose came up with the idea while serving jury duty in New York City and found the process “solemn” and “impressive.” The first airing on Studio One was September 20, 1954, with stars Robert Cummings, Franchot Tone, George Veskovec, Joseph Sweeney, and Norman Fell. Rose won an Emmy Award for his screenplay. Henry Fonda produced the wok in 1957 with Sidney Lumet, and the low-budget affair failed to make a profit. Until he died in 1982, Fonda never received any money for his work or performance. But he rightly considered it one of his best. The film stars some of the best character actors of the time and earned multiple Academy Award nominations (Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay) but competed in the same year as The Bridge on the River Kwai, which swept all of the major awards in 1957. In this episode, the Margos discuss the significant differences between the teleplay and the movie and try to decide which we like better. In this ep the Margos discuss:The backstory of the original TV productionThe strict demands of filming on one setThe case being tried and how it is picked apartThe cast: Martin Balsam (Juror 1,) John Fielder (Juror 2,) Lee J Cobb (Juror 3,) E.G. This recasting of Nathaniel's familiar question from the Gospel is a fair summary of many modern Christians' assessment of the Pentecostal tradition. Yet in recent years, a growing number of Pentecostals have been turning afresh to the ancient, creedal Christian faith. Bishop Emilio Alvarez has himself been at the forefront of this movement. In Pentecostal Orthodoxy he introduces the phenomenon, and extends the project of paleo-orthodox ressourcement (associated with scholars such as Thomas Oden and Robert Webber) to include orthodox expressions within Pentecostalism, particularly his own Afro-Latino Pentecostal movement. Pentecostal Orthodoxy: Toward an Ecumenism of the Spirit (InterVarsity Press, 2022) is a manifesto of sorts, promising not only to open up the possibility of a genuinely orthodox Pentecostalism, but to reframe modern ecumenical dialogue as well. Emilio Alvarez (PhD, Fordham University) is the presiding bishop of the Union of Charismatic Orthodox Churches, a communion that embraces the one holy, catholic, apostolic tradition. He is also associate provost for lifelong learning at Asbury Theological Seminary. Jackson Reinhardt is a graduate of University of Southern California and Vanderbilt University. Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico...it very well may be your last! Our latest look at crime cinema has us trudging through the muck of Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, director Sam Peckinpah's unforgiving neo-western from 1974. But before we descend into oblivion, we load up a Blue Plate Special where we discuss Kathryn Bigelow's appropriately titled Strange Days, parse the latest David Cronenberg release Crimes of the future, and celebrate the dearly departed character acting legend Phillip Baker Hall. Upon eventually taking the off-ramp to Hell, we consider the game changing filmography of Peckinpah, the beauty of Warren Oates, and weigh what exactly today's film in question adds to the genre complexion of New Hollywood's cynicism. Have you ever wondered how the earliest Christians worshiped as they gathered to remember Christ? While we have a few New Testament texts that describe what those early Christians did as they came together, we don't know much about what they sang, if they did at all. We do have several texts that scholars refer to as "Christ hymns" (Philippians 2:6-11, Colossians 1:15-20, John 1:1-14, Hebrews 1:1-4), but we have no proof that these hymns were sung in a church worship service. In today's episode, Dr. Corey Auen (Professor of Worship Arts) shares his insight into these Christ hymns and discusses how these texts can help us avoid what Robert Webber calls "worship narcissism." Today is Pentecost Sunday, a celebration full of joy and awe. Although sometimes overlooked or downplayed, Pentecost plays a crucial role in the story of salvation. Theologian, Robert Webber, says, “In order to bring God’s people into a full experience of the Good News, an emphasis on Pentecost is necessary.” Notes: Daily Readings Ancient-Future Time, by Robert E. Today is the Second Sunday of Easter. Yes, much like Christmas in the church tradition is more than one day. Easter is a celebration that carries us into Pentecost. Robert Webber says, “Easter is a time to call the church back to its roots,” and I believe this call is just as relevant today. Traditionally, the Second Sunday of Easter focuses on the story of Thomas and his unbelief. We might know this as the story of “Doubting Thomas,” but that might not be a proper name for this follower of Jesus. In my opinion, he probably wasn’t any less inclined to believe Jesus had risen as the rest of the disciples; he just happened to not be in the room when Jesus appeared. Is this recent phenomenon the equivalent of a Covid divorce? Or has this unrest been a slow simmer that has just now reached its boiling point? Join Knox, Jamie, and Erin as they explore what makes someone leave either a church or the Church and find out if there’s more going on to “leaving the church” than just ghosting a building. Today marks the first Sunday of Lent, a time when we journey with Christ into death and are reborn through his resurrection. In Mark’s Gospel, one line tells us a dramatic story. “And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.” The early church fathers often used this scripture to compare Adam and his temptation in the garden, with Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness. Paul often uses the terms first Adam and second Adam to describe their purpose in this story of redemption. According to Robert Webber, “the first Adam did something to us. He brought sin, death, and condemnation and triggered the chain of events that brought ruin to the human family. But the second Adam did something for us. He reversed what the first Adam did, bringing life, righteousness, and justification and setting into motion a new chain of events that will eventually bring redemption to the whole world.” Notes: Daily Readings Ancient-Future Time, by Robert E. Today is Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent. If you grew up in a protestant background similar to mine, Lent might be an unfamiliar season for you. It was only eight years ago that I began to look into what the season of Lent really means. In short, Lent is a time for repentance. As the theologian, Robert Webber puts it, “Lent calls us back to God, back to basics, back to the spiritual realities of life. It calls us to put to death the sin and the indifference we have in our hearts toward God and our fellow persons. And it beckons us to enter once again into the joy of the Lord–the joy of a new life born out of death to the old life.” Notes: Daily Readings Ancient-Future Time, by Robert E. Here's another episode of “60 Seconds with Robert Webber,” a regular audio feature here at Epiclesis. In this installment, Bob sums up his teaching on how the Emmaus Road story is a template for worship, and a journey that he himself has been on his whole life, with a look at what happens at Table.
Here's another installment of "60 Seconds with Robert Webber," a regular feature here at Epiclesis. In this audio clip, Bob says that worship doesn't have a life of its own, that it doesn't proceed from us-- but rather does God's story. And when worship does God's story, some pretty remarkable things happen.
Sex and Slapstick masterpiece. Directed by Blake Edwards. Starring Dudley Moore, Bo Derek, Julie Andrews, Dee Wallace, Robert Webber, Max Showalter and Brian Dennehy. Music composed by Henry Mancini. How is the world wrong about this movie? From Bryan: A rare treat: A fun, fall down comedy for adults. Huge when it came out. Now no one talks about it. What gives? Blake Edwards is one of the great comedy directors and is so much more than just the guy who made the Pink Panther films. This tale about the failures of mid-life crisis masculinity is really, really funny and ready for a revisit. Nobody Loses All The Time: Pain, Suffering, Purpose, & Mexico - Sam Peckinpah's Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia Ibrahim & I are thrilled to showcase Sam Peckinpah's most personal film (and the only one he claims was released as intended), Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974). A painfully honest depiction of an American ex-patriot living in Mexico who is given one last chance to get ahead. In the role of his career - and one of the only films in which he was cast as a romantic lead - the great character actor Warren Oates gives his most naked and beautiful performance. Alongside Mexican actress Isela Vega as Elita, Robert Webber and Gig Young as hitmen, Kris Kristofferson, and the great Mexican actor/director Emilio Fernandez, Oates shines as Bennie in a role modeled, almost embarrassingly on director Peckinpah. The less said the better. If you're a fan of Peckinpah than you owe it to yourself to watch his most personal film. Thanks for listening. Drawing from the work of the theologian Robert Webber, Pastor Michael speaks about the biblical pattern of worship and the necessity for worship not being divided up into pieces we like better than others as the measure for authentic worship. He then speaks about the importance of proclamation of the word of God.

Following the Church calendar is one of the most powerful ways to embrace and be shaped by the gospel in discipleship. God has blessed the Church with the Church calendar as an opportunity to physically remember and be transformed by embodying the greatest events of God’s people. Does worship design really matter? In today’s Seven Minute Seminary, Dr. Jonathan Powers encourages churches to design their worship services in a way that faithfully acts out the story of Jesus. He uses the four-fold approach of Robert Webber’s Planning Blended Worship to model a holistic way of meeting together in order to orient God’s people to his transforming presence.
Dr. McKnight explains how remembering in the context of Eucharist is more than mentally recalling an event, but it is an invitation to live faithfully according God’s covenant. Jesus rooted the first Eucharist meal in the context of Passover and when the Church partakes in Eucharist today God is still growing roots of liberation into the lives of believers.
