Husbands, partners, and jobs come and go, but close friendships are our bedrock. Until they're not. What happens when these bonds sabotage instead of support? Who among us has the courage to walk away? And how can we protect ourselves from further heartbreak? In her provocative new book, “Estranged: How Strained Female Friendships are Mended or Ended,” (Meridian Editions) well-known gender expert and bestseller Susan Shapiro Barash takes a deep dive into the complexities of female friendships. By peeling back the societal narrative that our friendships are meant to last forever, she uncovers a more nuanced reality: the closest bonds do falter. Through groundbreaking research and 150 interviews with women aged 20 to 80, Barash reveals an emerging trend — estrangement among female friends. She uncovered how these suboptimal friendships can impact mental health, why women avoid conflict even in damaging relationships, the emotional trauma of cutting ties with a friend and estrangement as a radical yet necessary act of self-preservation. She challenges women to reimagine their friendships and take the bold step of letting go when necessary. This cutting-edge book offers an empowering path forward: learning to prioritize self-worth, stability and authenticity over loyalty to friendships that no longer serve us. Barash has written several nonfiction books, including Tripping the Prom Queen, and A Passion for More: Affairs that Make or Break Us. She taught gender studies at Marymount Manhattan and has guest taught creative nonfiction at Sarah Lawrence's Writing Institute. She was featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Post, Chicago Tribune, Elle, Marie Claire, and has appeared on TODAY, Good Morning America, CBS, CNN, and MSNBC and as a guest on NPR and Sirius. She was a panelist for the New York State Council on the Arts, a judge for the International Emmys, and Vice Chair of the Mentoring Committee of the Women's Leadership Board at Harvard's JFK School of Government. It's a must-read that every person, religious and non-religious, should buy and peruse every night before bed. It'll make you think harder, pray more ardently, and understand your civilization better." — Ben Shapiro, host of "The Ben Shapiro Show" "Dennis Prager's commentary on Exodus will rank among the greatest modern Torah commentaries. That is how important I think it is. And I am clearly not alone... It might well be on its way to becoming the most widely read Torah commentary of our time—and by non-Jews as well as by Jews." — Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, bestselling author of Jewish Literacy Why do so many people think the Bible, the most influential book in world history, is outdated? Why do our friends and neighbors – and sometimes we ourselves – dismiss the Bible as irrelevant, irrational, immoral, or all of these things? This explanation of the Book of Exodus, the second book of the Bible, will demonstrate that the Bible is not only powerfully relevant to today's issues, but completely consistent with rational thought. Do you think the Bible permitted the trans-Atlantic slave trade? You won't after reading this book. Do you struggle to love your parents? If you do, you need this book. Do you doubt the existence of God because belief in God is “irrational?” This book will give you reason after reason to rethink your doubts. The title of this commentary is, “The Rational Bible” because its approach is entirely reason-based. The reader is never asked to accept anything on faith alone. As Prager says, “If something I write does not make rational sense, I have not done my job.” The Rational Bible is the fruit of Dennis Prager's forty years of teaching the Bible to people of every faith, and no faith. On virtually every page, you will discover how the text relates to the contemporary world and to your life. His goal: to change your mind – and then change your life.   Highly Recommended by ACU. Purchase his book at- https://www.amazon.com/Rational-Bible-Exodus-Dennis-Prager/dp/1621577724   The Rational Bible: Genesis by Dennis Prager  USA Today bestseller Publishers Weekly bestseller Wall Street Journal bestseller Many people today think the Bible, the most influential book in world history, is not only outdated but irrelevant, irrational, and even immoral. This explanation of the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible, demonstrates clearly and powerfully that the opposite is true. The Bible remains profoundly relevant—both to the great issues of our day and to each individual life. It is the greatest moral guide and source of wisdom ever written. Do you doubt the existence of God because you think believing in God is irrational? This book will give you many reasons to rethink your doubts. Do you think faith and science are in conflict? You won't after reading this commentary on Genesis. Do you come from a dysfunctional family? It may comfort you to know that every family discussed in Genesis was highly dysfunctional! The title of this commentary is “The Rational Bible” because its approach is entirely reason-based. The reader is never asked to accept anything on faith alone. In Dennis Prager's words, “If something I write is not rational, I have not done my job.” The Rational Bible is the fruit of Dennis Prager's forty years of teaching the Bible—whose Hebrew grammar and vocabulary he has mastered—to people of every faith and no faith at all. On virtually every page, you will discover how the text relates to the contemporary world in general and to you personally. His goal: to change your mind—and, as a result, to change your life.   The Rational Bible: Deuteronomy: God, Blessings, and Curses by Dennis Prager Is the Bible, the most influential book in world history, still relevant? Why do people dismiss it as being irrelevant, irrational, immoral, or all of these things? This explanation of the Book of Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Bible, will demonstrate how it remains profoundly relevant - both to the great issues of our day and to each individual life. Do you doubt the existence of God because you think believing in God is irrational? This book will cause you to reexamine your doubts. The title of this commentary is The Rational Bible because its approach is entirely reason-based. The listener is never asked to accept anything on faith alone. In Dennis Prager's words, “If something I write is not rational, I have not done my job.” The Rational Bible is the fruit of Prager's forty years of teaching to people of every faith and no faith at all. In virtually every section, you will discover how the text relates to the contemporary world in general and to you on a personal level. His goal: to change your mind - and, as a result, to change your life.

It has been revealed that Bryan Kohberger, the person suspected of killing four students at the University of Idaho, was terminated from his position as a teaching assistant just days before he was taken into custody for the suspected murders of Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20 who, were all stabbed to death in the early hours of November 13 after Kohberger, 28, is accused of entering into a rented home in Moscow, Idaho, and murdering them all. Kohberger is 28 years old.  At the time of the deaths, Kohberger was a PhD candidate in criminology and teaching assistant at Washington State University in neighboring Pullman. However, Kohberger had been issued multiple warnings by the university in the months leading up to his arrest, and he was officially fired from his position as a teaching assistant on December 19, according to a report that was published on Tuesday by Ashleigh Banfield of NewsNation, who cited multiple sources who requested anonymity. According to Banfield, a letter that was handed to Kohbrger before he was dismissed indicated that he had a "sexist attitude" towards women he interacted with at the institution, that he was "rude" to women, and that he evidently rated them differently than men. According to reports, the letter also provided a timeline of the events that led up to Kohberger's dismissal, beginning with an alleged "altercation" with a lecturer on September 23, just weeks into the job. According to Banfield, the letter claims that Kohberger and the professor got together on October 3 to talk about "professional behavior." Banfield stated the letter makes this claim. It was then alleged that the professor sent Kohberger an email on the 21st of October to inform him that he had failed to satisfy the expectations that had been laid forth in the meeting earlier that month. They got together once more on November 12 to talk about a "improvement plan," and then they got together once more on December 7 to talk about how well that plan was working out. According to reports, the second confrontation took place on December 9 between Kohberger and the professor. He was officially terminated 10 days later. Want to listen to ALL of our Podcasts Ad-Free? When it comes to what we wear - women just can’t seem to win. Our clothing choices are constantly held under the microscope. We have been told to cover up, but also to “not be a prude”. But how much skin is too much skin? How much of a woman's leg is acceptable to see in public? It’s time to recognise that our clothing is not the problem. In this episode, Hazelle, Azura, Germaine and guest Jasmine Sokko discuss the unnecessary policing of women’s clothes, and fashion as an identity. They share with us personal stories from when they were judged for what they wear and their opinions on the topic. Hi! On today's episode our main topic is all about those times in our lives when we feel hesitant, anxious, or self doubt. For many this has been introduced as 'imposter syndrome' where you feel like you're a fraud and undeserving of your accomplishments. But after being inspired by this article: "Stop Telling Women They Have Imposter Syndrome", I didn't want to use that label. I believe it's normal for any of us to have natural doubts and hesitancy from time to time, especially when we're doing something new or just something we really care about. It is important for us to acknowledge this part of our humanity. It's also important for us to remember that faking confidence can be appropriate at times, because it's actually just what practicing is. Sometimes you have to try a role on, or wear certain masks for a short time in order to help you transition to where you want or need to go next. Check it out when you have a moment, and thank you for letting me share a bit from within today.

Ep 6 The Superwoman Complex & How It Destroys Us

T.A.P.T.

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2021 20:35

In this week's episode, we discuss the concept of the Superwoman Complex. The dark side of the Superwoman complex is the fear of showing vulnerability. But at best, doing everything on our own is a recipe for stunted growth and, at worst, a path to burnout. Being continually caught up in the daily whirlwind often leads to losing perspective and a clear, current view of your market or field. Being head down all the time leads to isolation. As seasoned multitaskers, we too often put multiple families and business needs ahead of our wellbeing, which means support systems don't exist when an emergency arises. Asking other people for help is hard. Yet overcoming this behavior and its underlying fears is essential for personal and business growth. Key takeaways from today's episode: 1. Having a fear of vulnerability and overcompensating by being super independent can lead to burnout and stunted growth. 2. Having a head-down mentality to just focus on success can come at the cost of not looking up and seeing what you're missing, including connection with other people. 3. Our field adds an extra layer of pressure to be tough enough to hang. Any sign of weakness can be interpreted as not being strong enough or competent enough to be a "good social worker." 4. We can learn to set our boundaries. We don't always have to give, even if the people we are serving look like us. 5. Be conscious that no amount of accolades are enough for some of us. We may always feel like we have to overperform just to "make it" or be seen as good enough in a system of white supremacy. This tendency doesn't only apply to work. It also impacts our dating/marriage and other interpersonal relationships. Ask yourself what would happen if we didn't do everything or stopped being a "superwoman"? What would fall apart? Would it really? For questions and share outs and further discussion please contact us at therapistsarepeopletoo@gmail.com. Until next time, remember to live, laugh, love, and keep it real. -Frantzces, Sabeen and Tonika :) Click here to leave us a rating on iTunes.  Follow us on Instagram.

Heather Monro discusses the implications of Ashkenazi Hegemony in the Israeli Haredi society. Discrimination against Sephardim has become a growing issue in the Haredi world in Israel, but one which has taken a backseat to the more pressing questions of gender inequality and the religious-secular divide. Heather Munro's research has revealed that new Haredi feminist movements are increasingly engaged with the intersectionality debates of mainstream equality movements, and Sephardi discrimination is often inextricably wound up with other community struggles. Ashkenazi women with whom she engages articulate an Orientalist-type perception of Sephardim, including a rhetoric of cultural superiority. Sephardi women describe the way in which they have experienced discrimination as overly sexualising; most discrimination has occurred around issues of access to Ashkenazi institutional services like schools, which are perceived by both Sephardim and Ashkenazim as higher quality. Women are beginning to engage with the question of Sephardi discrimination through new Haredi feminist movements, which are gaining support despite Ashkenazi rabbinical denouncements of women politicians. Women may, ultimately, be the drivers behind anti-discrimination movements within the Israeli Haredi world.

HEALTH ISSUES OVER 50 EPISODE 33There are just some things that happen after we turn 50. Well, let's be honest, after 40 really.  In this episode we go through a few things that can be happening and some tips on how to help.#1  ShrinkageWe start to shrink because of the reduction in water between the discs. Some tips are yoga, chiropractic care, stretching, and using a roller ball.#2 IncontinenceLaughing and coughing become a whole new experience because your pee just doesn't stay put like it used to. You never pass up a bathroom. Kegel exercises are really the key to this.  Start early and be sure you are doing them right.  The Mayo clinic has instructions on how to do these right.Mayo clinic kegel exercise link:https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/mens-health/in-depth/kegel-exercises-for-men/art-20045074#3 Decreased libidoOne of the big things is women just stop feeling sexy. You can feel sexy at any age and size. Haven't you seen women that were not size 0 and were just sexy. Queen Latifah rocks her feminine! Sometimes you can be taking medication that is not helping either.  A great tip is to do something new. Charli shares in this episode how she tried pole dancing classes and her mom taking belly dancing classes. Hula hooping or try that Body Groove (check her out on YouTube).#4 More Sensitive to Stress & AnxietySound sensitivity is one that we chat about. Have you ever felt like you can hear every person, the birds outside, the person cutting the tomatoes in the kitchen and the cat meowing? That is due to hormones and can cause stress. When this along with other stressors can all add up and you just blow. It is important to share with trusted friends and family so that you release the pressure. It is great now that you can pay for counseling services online.  #5 Pain from joints wearing outIf you don't move it, you lose it. You just gotta keep your knees and joints moving to keep that fluid in there moving. Charli shares that she uses lemongrass essential oil on her knees to help. You may need to take an anti-inflammatory like Advil or Motrin. CBD oil and cream is super helpful as well. #6 Sleep DisordersSleep is so important! Especially for stress control and for weight loss. You release human growth hormones during sleep which helps you lose weight. If you suffer from neck pain it could be from the lack of sleep. There are great yoga practices before bedtime. We talk about sleep apnea and the importance of using your c-pap. It's time to go get a sleep study. Turn those devices off and read before bed instead. Use CBD or Lavender oil also to help with sleep issues.#7 Decreased Taste & SmellHave you noticed that you are having to salt things more often. Well, it's because you are losing your ability to taste things like you used to.  The same things goes for your sense of smell. ALERT!!! Please use no more than 4-5 sprays of perfume.  Just because you can't smell it doesn't me we can't! This can happen if you have worn the same perfume for a long time and have gotten used to it. Oh, and don't wear perfume or perfumed lotions to the doctor's office.#8 Skin CancerAll the damage you did to your skin when you were younger will start appearing now. You get the little age spots on your hands and face. It is now time to get every square inch of you checked by a dermatologist EVERY YEAR! Put your sunscreen on. Wear a hat.FOLLOW @burntfreckle on instagram or facebook#9 Slower MetabolismSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/THEFORREALLIFE)
