Jesús Florez is originally from Columbia but now resides in the USA, and despite not being a native English speaker, has built up his English to an impressive level of fluency. Jesús focuses a lot on accent since he has put a lot of work into getting a natural American accent. In the episode today, we discuss a lot about acquiring an English accent and how much effort you should put into that, whether accent is important, and a bit of a comparison between UK and US expressions.Show notes page - https://levelupenglish.school/podcast329Level 3 is coming to Level Up English this August! Tango can bring up all kinds of doubts—the kind you don't always say out loud.In this episode, I reflect on three mindset shifts that helped me move through quiet insecurity: the pressure to look a certain way, the myth that leaders always know more, and the moment musicality stopped being abstract and started feeling real in my body. This isn't a how-to. It's a reflection on what it means to feel behind, and how we begin to come back to ourselves. If you've ever questioned your place in tango - or wondered if you're doing it “right” - this one's for you.
This is an episode I've been planning for a long time and I'm quite excited to share. We'll be looking at the origins of 8 different English words and the deep stories behind them. Each word originally comes from another language or culture, and it was brought into English through fascinating stories that we'll explore in this episode. These are just a few examples of the countless words that have been adopted into English in a similar way.For each word, I'll ask a question to the audience to answer too, which gives you a chance to practice and hear my own views.Show notes page - https://levelupenglish.school/podcast328Level 3 is coming to Level Up English this August! Some dynamics in tango are so normalized, we stop seeing them - until something shakes us awake. This episode explores the unspoken power structures that shape our community: who gets centered, who stays silent, and why certain behaviors are tolerated for so long. It's not about one incident. It's about a pattern. One we've all participated in, whether we meant to or not.Through reflection and shared experiences, I look at the deeper questions behind the discomfort: How does power move in a tango space? What do we risk when we speak up? And what does real cultural change ask of us?This conversation isn't easy - but it's necessary if we want tango to be more than just beautiful on the surface.Tango is more than steps. It's a reflection of who we are - and how we show up for each other on the dance floor. If you're ready to explore the deeper layers of musicality, connection, and technique, try IMSO Tango School Online.
In this episode, I'll be going through pairs of confusing quantifiers (and similar pairs), such as So or Such, Many or Much, Fewer or Less? Some of these are even a struggle for native speakers, so if you can master these, you'll be in a good position with your English and sound much more natural. For each word, I will give a question for you to answer yourself and I'll do my best to answer them in the episode too.Show notes page - https://levelupenglish.school/podcast327Level 3 is coming to Level Up English this August! Tango has a reputation for being beautiful. But is it also… unwelcoming? In this episode, I look at what makes tango feel intimidating to newcomers - and what seasoned dancers can do to change that. No shaming, no blaming - just a clear-eyed look at how culture is created, and how each of us can help shape a more generous, open, and truly social dance floor.Because belonging doesn't happen by accident. It happens by design.
I recently reailsed that my own screen time is too high and may be causing a lot of health issues and other problems in my life. With that realisation, I decided to make some changes to fix this problem, and it got me thinking: How many other people are facing a similar issue? In this episode, I share the dangers of screen time and how you know if you're using phones and computers too much. I also talk about some methods of reducing screen time, while sharing lots of useful phrases to talk about doing something too much.Show notes page - https://levelupenglish.school/podcast326Sign Up for Free Lessons - https://www.levelupenglish.school/#freelessonsJoin Level Up English - https://courses.levelupenglish.schoolBy becoming a member, you can access all podcast transcripts, listen to the private podcast and join live lessons and courses on the website.

What makes a dancer stand out at the milonga? It's not just the moves. It's not just the music. It's something deeper. In this episode, I unpack the quiet, often unspoken reasons why dancers choose certain partners over others—from posture and floorcraft to musicality, energy, and presence. If you've ever wondered, “What are they seeing that I'm not?” or “What are people looking for when they watch me dance?”—this episode is for you.Whether you're newer to tango or have been dancing for years, this conversation will help you reframe how you see the dance floor… and how you show up on it.→ Chicago event info click here: https://imsotango.com/events Want to feel more confident, expressive, and musical in your own dancing? That's exactly what I help dancers do inside IMSO Tango School Online.

This episode originally aired in October 2024, but I'm bringing it back because it sparked some of the most heartfelt messages I've ever received. In this episode, I unpack the elusive, euphoric experience dancers often call the tango high. From nervous system chemistry to spiritual flow states, I reflect on what happens inside us when the dance clicks—and why we sometimes wait for it instead of learning how to bring it.Whether you've felt that magic or are still chasing it, this conversation will help you reframe what connection truly is—and what it means to offer it, not just receive it.Want to feel more confident, expressive, and musical in your own dancing? That's exactly what I help dancers do inside IMSO Tango School Online.

So today, we're bringing it back.If you've ever been told to “just feel the music,” but no one explained how—this one's for you. Politics and tango might seem like separate worlds—but are they really? In this final episode of the season, I'm diving into the messy, often uncomfortable reality of how political views—whether personal, community-based, or global—can shape who we dance with, who we avoid, and how we feel at the milonga. From awkward cabeceos to full-on community rifts, politics shows up in tango whether we like it or not. This is one of the spiciest episodes I've recorded yet, and I hope it sparks reflection—whether you agree, disagree, or find yourself somewhere in the middle.Tango music can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to. Why do so many tango events fizzle out—even when they seem to be thriving? In this episode, I pull back the curtain on what it really takes to be a tango organizer. A lot of people think being a professional tango dancer means getting paid to do what you love. And in some ways, it is.But in this episode, I talk about the side most people don't see—the pressure to always be “on,” the burnout, the financial stress, and the constant effort it takes to keep going. I also share why I was hesitant to go down this path, how I ended up here anyway, and what I've learned along the way.If you've ever wondered what it's really like to make tango your career—or what it costs to keep the passion alive—this one's for you. It's hard to be objective about your own dancing. In today's episode, I share an issue I've been thinking about for a while - finding the balance between speaking up and letting things go.In other words, when things annoy us or seem unjust, should we speak up and say something? Can competition and tango coexist? In this episode, I explore a question that makes many dancers uncomfortable: is there a place for competition in tango - or does it betray the spirit of the dance?Reflecting on my recent experience at the Southern California Tango Championship, I unpack what competition reveals (and conceals), why I used to resist it, and how it might actually serve tango's evolution.Best of Caló Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/09lFDSD2Vz63jTdfxkBGtE?si=67be9174ffe345dfMusicality isn't just about stepping on the beat—it's about knowing how to listen and respond. There's a fine line between connection and confusion on the tango floor. This week, we're diving into the unspoken sensuality of tango—how it shows up, what it triggers, and where each of us draws the line. What's considered “too much” might just depend on your mood, your phase of life, or the vibe of the tanda. Tango is full of paradoxes. We get physically close, yet remain emotionally guarded. We crave connection, but many of us are introverts with social anxiety. So what kind of connections do we actually form through tango? In this episode of The Tango Banter, I'm diving into the weird and wonderful world of tango relationships—the ones that don't exist in any other part of life. This isn't about judging them—it's about recognizing how much we learn about ourselves through the connections we form (and don't form).Musicality isn't just about stepping on the beat—it's about knowing how to listen and respond. What if the way you see yourself is shaping the way you dance—and the way others experience you at the milonga?Tango isn't just about steps; it's about presence. And yet, so many dancers hesitate, shrink, or second-guess themselves because they don't feel they “look” the part. But does appearance really determine connection, or is something deeper at play?In this episode, I dive into the unspoken anxieties of body image in tango—how age, size, and self-perception shape our experience on the dance floor. I explore the invisible factors that make a dancer magnetic, the surprising ways confidence is built (or broken), and why the most unforgettable tandas have nothing to do with how you look in the mirror. If you've ever wondered whether you belong in tango the way you are, this one's for you. It's hard to be objective about your own dancing. That's where I come in. Today I'm joined by Emma (Adventure into English) for a conversation about group vs solo activities. Emma has been helping with the group classes at Level Up English for some time now, so it's an appropriate topic for today. We start by discussing some Would You Rather questions for activities that can be done as a group or on your own.We then move onto some English expressions around the topic of groups and working together. These are expressions you can use in your daily life, and I quiz Emma on using these in her replies. See if you can join in the game too!Show notes page - https://levelupenglish.school/podcast303Sign Up for Free Lessons - https://www.levelupenglish.school/#freelessonsJoin Level Up English - https://courses.levelupenglish.schoolBy becoming a member, you can access all podcast transcripts, listen to the private podcast and join live lessons and courses on the website.
Mental Health is something we should all take seriously and I believe there's a lot of crossover between language learning and having a healthy mindset. This was a request from a listener to cover this topic. Although I am of course, not a professional, I do love the topic, so I share 18 different methods that I used to improve my own mental health and bring happiness into my life. I hope you find some of them useful too.Of course, as always, I mention loads of fantastic English words and phrases related to this topic that you can use in your daily life too. You may know that British people are famous for using the word 'sorry' all the time.In this episode, I talk about this habit and how much truth is behind it, but I also share the different situations in which we would say 'sorry' in the UK - and maybe more generally in the English-speaking world too.Sorry is so much more than a word used when you make a mistake and it can have many different meanings. There are also many different ways to apologise and say you're sorry depending on how serious the situation is, so in the second half of this episode, I cover these different phrases.Show notes page - https://levelupenglish.school/podcast301Sign Up for Free Lessons - https://www.levelupenglish.school/#freelessonsJoin Level Up English - https://courses.levelupenglish.schoolBy becoming a member, you can access all podcast transcripts, listen to the private podcast and join live lessons and courses on the website.
In Episode 300 of the podcast, Akari from the Nihongo For You podcast joins me today for a chat about teaching languages, moving abroad, and learning English. In the second half of the episode, we talk about life experiences where I ask Akari questions using the present perfect tense about things she has done before. It's a great opportunity to practice the grammar and see it used in the context of a regular conversation.Perhaps you could also answer along at home and practice for yourself? If you're learning or thinking about learning Japanese, don't forget to check out Akari's website and podcast too.Show notes page - https://levelupenglish.school/podcast300Sign Up for Free Lessons - https://www.levelupenglish.school/#freelessonsJoin Level Up English - https://courses.levelupenglish.schoolBy becoming a member, you can access all podcast transcripts, listen to the private podcast and join live lessons and courses on the website.
In my last episode, I spoke about my cycling trip to Taiwan. While there, I had a lot of time alone to think to myself with no distractions. In this episode today, I'm going to share some of the things I was thinking about. One of these was the idea of Hedonic Adaptation (also known as the Hedonic Treadmill). This is something that we all face as humans and might just be the key to understanding how to be happy and content. It's a really useful topic when it comes to being happy with what you have and not always feeling bad about what you don't - such as feeling bad for not being good enough at English. I took 2 weeks off in October to ride a bicycle around the whole of Taiwan. It was over 1000km and took about 2 weeks to complete. Along the way, I had both good and bad experiences and there's a lot I'd love to share!I also filmed a lot of videos of my cycle, so if you'd like to see, you can watch this episode on YouTube - The Level Up English Podcast. This is perhaps the longest solo episode I've ever recorded, but throughout the episode, I talk about the good and the bad, what I did day by day, how I prepared for the trip, and my experience talking in Chinese with people there. Along the way, I also mention a lot of useful vocabulary which will be useful for you as English learners.
