As busy, hard-working professionals with families, demanding jobs, and multiple other obligations, we often go into auto-pilot. We mindlessly follow scripts and templates that were passed onto us about what success looks like. We rarely stop to ask "why?" and fail to see that saying yes to too much may in the end lead us on to the people-pleasing road to ruin. This week's guest, Amy Green Smith, has successfully navigated this dance, and has helped many clients get out of this trap. Amy is a certified and credentialed life coach and hypnotherapist, masterful speaker, and personal empowerment expert. Amy uses her roles as coach, writer, podcaster, and speaker to move individuals to a place of radical personal empowerment and self-worth. With acute focus on helping people “find their voice”, she is highly sought after for her uncommon style of irreverence, wisdom, and humor and has been a featured expert in Inspired Coach Magazine and on Fox 5 San Diego. We touched on many fascinating topics during our discussion including: The artificial distinction between intuition and inner critic, which are actually in many ways just opposite sides of the same coin The common tendency to focus on the fight / flight response associated with the sympathetic nervous system, and ignore the 3rd “F” – fawn. How people-pleasing plays into all of this. Amy's powerful conception of “self-sentiment,” which is a bit more nuanced than the traditional notion of self-talk. How emotional “entry points” help us unpack moments of high anxiety, and prevent us from getting taken down by black and white thinking. Amy's spiritual journey, which started with a dogmatic, devout Christian upbringing, and evolved into her exploring Buddhism, Universal Unitarianism, and numerous other schools of thought Amy's transition from a successful (but unfulfilling) career in corporate training for a large cosmetics manufacturer to life coaching, which was far more aligned with her soul purpose The role of consent in following the voices of our inner critic as adults (vs. when we were children) The power of hypnotherapy in unlocking alpha, theta, and delta brainwave states. How injecting mindfulness even in small doses can ultimately push humanity forward. The importance of distinguishing between "am I in danger?” or “is this something new?" when entering ambiguous situations. What it truly means "outsource our self worth" - i.e., please others for the sake of feeling better about ourselves. How progressive language, and a more incremental approach, can help us break down those “big hairy audacious goals,” and prevent us from getting mired in self-sabotage and defeat. The analogy of smoke alarm to help us take a more measured, nuanced view of our self-defense systems. The valuable insights of Bruce Lipton, Jose Silva, Richard Davidson on mindfulness, hypnosis, and meditation Amy's signature 9-month transformational group immersion program for women entitled “Worthy,” which includes two 5-day retreats, a supportive community, as well as numerous online and offline resources Do you want to feel more worthy? I'm pumped to welcome my new friend, Amy Green Smith, onto the podcast today! I honestly feel she's like my new best friend - she is SO freaking cool, and offers a very unique perspective on the topic of people pleasing (especially recovering people pleasers - I know there are many of us out there)! In today's episode, we cover crucial topics like people pleasing, unshakable boundaries, communicating with power, cultivating self-worth, and more. Boundaries are one of those things that can feel pretty intimidating (to both people enforcing and receiving them), but they are extremely important when it comes to your self-worth and ‘enoughness'. Taking a three-pronged approach (like Amy recommends) can be incredibly beneficial when you're ready to get serious about your boundaries and actually implement them (the follow through is key here). The world has plenty of badass, intelligent women who are incredibly brilliant, but they tend to doubt themselves, and feel like they don't have ‘enough' to offer. Contrary to what society had led us to believe, we ARE allowed to feel however the heck we want to, and we shouldn't feel ashamed or ‘less than' for our unique life decisions. In this episode, we cover:What boundaries are + why they are incredibly important in regards to your self-worth and ‘enoughness'Why you should not allow your silence to make you a liar + using Amy's three-pronged approach for setting boundaries when you need to have those tough conversationsThe detrimental impact that comes when you lose yourself and who you're really meant to be, simply to fit in and please everyone around youLearning to cultivate your value + genuinely believing that you ARE allowed to feel however you do, regardless of what others think Taking inventory of who you're willing/able to have difficult conversations with + practicing kindness and assertiveness when speaking with othersLetting go of societal pressures when it comes to your health & body as you age + continually prioritizing your relationship with your partnerResources & Links:Gather in Growth Sponsorship InquiryBook me as a speaker for your next eventGather in Growth podcast produced by: Jill Carr PodcastingConnect with Amy:Check out all of her free resources HEREFollow on Instagram @heyamygreensmithCheck out Amy's websiteListen to her podcast The Bold-Faced Truth PodcastConnect with Emily:Follow on Instagram and FacebookJoin my email listCheck out my websiteConnect with on LinkedInBe sure to hit subscribe so you never miss the latest...

We will learn: How to master the art of setting boundaries without drama Why people emotionally regress and how to handle it with empathy How specificity in conversation might save your relationships Every gift has a shadow, and every shadow a gift. This has been one of my biggest lessons throughout my spiritual growth. I've learned that the impact of our actions or words can vary dramatically based on the energy we bring to them. Take serving others, for instance. It can spring from a sense of purpose and self-worth, or it can be rooted in people-pleasing. Same action, totally different vibe. This duality is everywhere in our lives. Confidence can be empowering or arrogant, depending on how you use it. Ambition can drive you to reach for the stars or have you stepping on others to get there. But is there a way to honor our truth while leaving space for others? I think there is. It's about finding that sweet spot between doormat and bulldozer. It's speaking your mind without steamrolling others. It's setting boundaries with kindness. It's disagreeing without dismissing. So that's what we're talking about today. Our guest is Amy Green Smith. She is a life coach and hypnotherapist, speaker, and communication expert. She helps people find their voice and move to a place of radical personal empowerment and self-worth. “You can actually speak up for yourself with poise and grace and kindness.” –Amy Green SmithCan you be compassionate and assertive at the same time? I'm really excited to talk with Amy Green Smith about self-empowerment and how she stopped being a people pleaser.Don't think you are a people pleaser? We go beyond the idea of people pleasing being something a timid wallflower does. Any time we alter who we are in order to gain favor from another person or party at a cost to us is people pleasing. Sometimes we people please to stay safe. It's important to see where people pleasing is keeping us safe and where it is stealing our joy.We don't always have to be disrupters. Sometimes we just want to be ourselves. The middle path can be messy, but it's possible to stand up for ourselves without anger. We can communicate without yelling and screaming or biting our tongue all the time. We talk about: Taking up equal space with people with different ideasSetting and holding boundaries around challenging areas in relationshipsHow to live life according to what you want, not other's demands Recognizing and feeling dichotomous feelings and not falling prey to guiltGoing back to your internal compass and checking your intentionQuestions to ask to find your truthABOUT AMYAmy Green Smith is a certified and credentialed life coach and hypnotherapist, masterful speaker, and personal empowerment expert. Amy uses her roles as coach, writer, podcaster, and speaker to move individuals to a place of radical personal empowerment and self-worth. With acute focus on helping people “find their voice”, she is highly sought after for her uncommon style of irreverence, wisdom, and humor and has been a featured expert in Inspired Coach Magazine and on Fox 5 San Diego.LINKSWebsite: https://amygreensmith.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heyamygreensmith/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/heyamygreensmith/DOABLE CHANGESAt the end of every episode, we share three doable changes, so you can take what you've heard and put it into action. Action is how change happens.Often we feel like our actions have to be huge to match the bigness of our desires, but we have seen over and over and over again that the little things add up. By stacking up a series of Doable Changes, you will create that big change that you crave. Choose the one that really resonates with you this week and really make it part of your life. Here are Three Doable Changes from this conversation:CHECK YOUR INNER COMPASS. You will get a lot of feedback from other people, and it's not helpful. When you are feeling bad about how people react to something you say or do, return to your inner compass and check your intention.FIND YOUR TRUTH. Use this three prong question to find your truth in any situation. Ask: What are the facts of the situation? What am I making up? What else could be true? SET A BOUNDARY. Boundary setting is not easy. It takes time and energy, but it is an important step to living the life you want to live and giving up harmful people pleasing. Start by getting really clear about what you will and will not tolerate. Then communicate that firmly and with compassion.
Our guest today, Amy Green Smith wants you to know: You are not a fraud. You are not uniquely broken. Your voice matters. But to believe all this, you must first know that you are worthy. Amy is a life coach, a hypnotherapist, and personal empowerment expert, but mostly, an amazing human. She's also the host of the Bold-Faced Truth Podcast and the author of Speak Up For Yourself Without Being a Dick. In today's episode, Rachael and Amy talk about people-pleasing and why we do it. You may be surprised to learn that some forms of people-pleasing are necessary and it's not just something that introverts do. And what does being assertive and setting boundaries have to do with your inner critic? They are all intertwined and they are all things that YOU, yes YOU can get a hold of. It just takes some awareness and some courage. Amy wants you to enjoy your badass self because you deserve it. And we want you to enjoy this episode! This episode was a really fun one. In it, I chat with credentialed life coach, hypnotherapist, and personal empowerment expert, Amy Green Smith about fear, people-pleasing, feeling worthy, and taking up space. There's a lot more I want to say about it but it's one you should listen to and grab some nuggets from yourself! Here are some teasers... - Am I actually in danger or is this just new? - We have conflated what is familiar with what is comfortable. - Fear and people-pleasing aren't always "bad" - sometimes they're necessary and/or keep you safe. - Heightened emotional states require acute care, not personal development tools. - Our modern-day fear responses look different. - Progressive language (stating you are taking action toward something) can be really helpful in shifting beliefs. - Our bodies are forcing us to slow down... We have to TAKE rest because it is so rarely given. We're covering a topic that falls into the category of “we've covered it before but it's worth repeating”. Because I know most, if not all, women struggle with setting and communicating boundaries as it flies in the face of our people-pleasing, helpful and perfectionist tendencies. So we're going to talk about Boundaries, again, but we're going to focus more on the actual words and what to say. Amy Green Smith joins us again for her last episode in our 4-part series (if you haven't listened to our last three episodes, I'd highly encourage you to do that!) Communicating boundaries in a productive and responsible way is going to require practice. Probably lots and lots of practice, given however many years we've spent not communicating them. Don't wait for your mic drop moment – don't expect perfection – don't spend endless amounts of time worrying about what the other person thinks about your boundary – just start practicing. Because that's how you get good at anything. Connect with Amy: Grab Amy's FREE-SOURCES at: https://amygreensmith.com/free Only 2 spots available in Amy's Signature Worthy Program! If you're tuning in for the first time, or just because this topic was of interest to you, I want to point out that this is Part 2 of our conversation on Fear & Failure, so if you didn't listen to part 1 just yet, I'd encourage you to go back to episode 197 from last week and start there. If you've already listened to Part 1, then I'm going to assume you're here because you've been not-so-patiently waiting for the completion of this conversation… and I can tell you it'll be worth the wait. I'm joined by Amy Green Smith, life coach, hypnotherapist, speaker, and communication expert. There is so much I could say about Amy, but I'm going to share something she has on her website that gave me the chills and brought tears to my eyes because it's so REAL, it's so relevant, and it's so HER – she says “I was fucking DONE being motivated from a place of guilt and fear. I realized that if push came to shove and I had to decide between making my family happy or making me happy, I CHOSE ME”. I feel everything about that, deeply. No matter what, I don't care what is happening or what you're going thru, you are worthy and valuable. Neither fear nor failure can change that. FEAR and FAILURE – sounds like a party right? I promise we'll have some fun with it, and give you actionable tools, but my biggest goal is for all of us to create a new, more productive, more empowered interpretation of fear and failure. Because we had such a great conversation last week I've invited Amy Green Smith, life coach, hypnotherapist, speaker, and communication expert to join me again. I appreciate her uncommon style of irreverence, wisdom, and humor! She released episode 500 of her amazing podcast “The Bold-Faced Truth” and then stopped recording, so I'm eternally grateful to her for her time and wisdom in joining me, and stupid excited that we get to release a few episodes with her as a guest on our show! We'll bring the rest of this conversation on Fear & Failure to you next week… and trust me when I say we're just getting warmed up. Our brain is a wonderful thing, but it sees what we KNOW as safe and the UNKNOWN as dangerous, so we need to teach our brains that all risk is not the same. You can be scared, and you can be brave. As well as how to overcome imposter syndrome and finally stop people-pleasing. And those themes didn't stop there. In this episode, Amy continues to provide even more strategies for navigating those uncomfortable conversations surrounding boundaries AND overcoming people-pleasing - this time in the form of overexplaining when setting a boundary and holding more of someone else's experience than is ours to hold. Amy walks us into actually embracing boundaries without the unnecessary justifications. And you know we can't talk about boundaries without talking about what happens when someone doesn't respect those boundaries. Don't worry, we got you. Amy gives us actionable advice on handling situations where others disregard your boundaries, advocating for your children, and enforcing consequences when those limits are crossed. Today if you struggle with people pleasing this one's for you. My guest Amy Green Smith, life coach and communication expert, shares some insights to help empower people pleasers. She talks about the origins of people pleasing, why we people please, and when people pleasing makes sense. Amy defines people pleasing as sacrificing something of self to make sure that other people are happy. Often it's rooted in a feeling of self inflicted sense of threat, lack of value or unworthiness. When that's the case, we can equate pleasing others with our worth and self preservation. The Root and Rise Podcast | Personal Growth, Motherhood, & Healing Trauma
Are you a people pleaser? I'd never really identified as one before but my guest today challenged that view. Amy Green Smith is a certified and credentialed life coach and hypnotherapist, masterful speaker, and personal empowerment expert. In this episode you will learn: >> The definition of people pleasing – and the surprising reasons why you might be one! >> Why it's not always a bad thing - it actually fits into the responses of fight, flight, freeze or fawn >> How to distinguish between what to battle and what to let go of – hint: you shouldn't allow your silence to make you a liar! >> The ways you can galvanize yourself to be bold enough to stop people pleasing! A basic human instinct is to constantly be alert and scanning for threats constantly - another is the need to belong. People pleasing fits into this. In the early days of civilisation you had to fit in with a group in order to survive and subconsciously, our minds still recognise this. The problems come when your people-pleasing tendencies come at a cost to you. Amy shares practical hacks to overcome people pleasing – you don't have to be harsh, you can still be gentle. And speaking up doesn't always have to be a giant conversation – it can be simple, concise and effective. It's about boundaries and respect. Working on these tendencies helps you have those difficult conversations – with an adult child who needs some tough talk, or an underperforming team member for instance. You can confront these issues without being confrontational. Sometimes it's about an open conversation and other times it's about taking a firm, stoic stance. It depends on your boundaries and the intricacies of the topic at hand. It's about having grace and kindness whilst not bending. And of course, when you're not creating and managing your own boundaries, you're going to stay stuck – and energetically, that just won't work for you! Am I actually in danger or is this just new? Amy Green Smith, host of the Bold-Faced Truth podcast, is here to discuss the four fear responses. How does our fear manifest in a modern world where there's not a large animal chasing us and we have protection from the elements? Now we have the new fear response of fawning that manifests as people pleasing. Our flight response resonates in the way we experience depression. And how does misogyny use our fear responses as a tool to oppression and a way to keep us silent and small? As a people pleaser, I know how complicated it is. It feels like it's part of who we are and how we like to give and show up for others. But when can it be not so good for us, or even not so good for those that we care most about? When does it get unhealthy, inauthentic, and maybe even keep us stuck and unhappy in ways? In this interview with Amy Smith Green - who is amazing - we discuss WHY we people please, how to feel into when it's not serving you, beginning to notice when you do it, how to shift so that you can operate from your highest, best version of yourself and feel deeper calm, happiness AND connection. In the episode we get into: Why we feel like it's more important to make others happy over ourselvesHow to communicate your truth with grace and kindness How to balance your wishes for your kids with allowing them to be their authentic unique selvesWhy it's important to become comfortable being a disappointmentThe big connection between worthiness and speaking our truthWhy we feel safe with the people who set boundariesWhere emotional intelligence fits in with people pleasing How our emotions are messengers telling us important information, but isn't a reflection of our worthinessWhy it's so important to give the people we love the opportunity to be what we need by communicating honestlyWhy delivery of your message is the key to getting what you wantWhy fear responses don't work and why we do themHow to use vulnerability to set the energetic tone in conflictWhy conversational consent (timing!) can totally change a difficult convoHow to teach your kids it's ok to express anger in safe and appropriate waysWhy the container of how you hold a high conflict topic is crucial to having a healthy and respectful conversationSO many of us fall back on people pleasing and there are times when it feels good and works! But there are also times when we may want to look at giving ourselves permission to be honest and real, and by doing so, we're creating much deeper and more meaningful connection. In episode 102 of Outside The Studio with Tessa: "Boundaries are the distance at which I can love both you and me simultaneously" - Prentis Hemphil Media and movies paint the stereotype that hypnosis puts you under a controlled spell, but that's far from the truth. Tessa Tovar invites Amy Green Smith to chat on how to establish boundaries, the four fear responses, and what hypnosis actually looks like with how it can improve our mental health. Amy Green Smith is a certified and credentialed life coach and hypnotherapist, masterful speaker, and courageous communication expert. She is the author of Speak Up For Yourself Without Being a Dick and the host of The Bold Faced Truth Podcast. Timestamps(00:00) Intro(01:50) People Pleasing(06:50) Parts Therapy(14:20) Access to the Subconscious(22:30) Consulting the Pendulum(27:40) Handwriting Analysis(34:00) Boundaries(42:25) Four Fear Responses(48:25) Keeping Inspired(55:55) Amy's E-Book(57:30) Final Thoughts Key Takeaways1. Boundaries 101 is to decide what the boundary is, be specific with what we need, and communicate with the appropriate party about the issues. The most difficult part for most is the delivery of the boundary with others but should look something like this: here are the issues, here is how I interpret it, here's my request, here is the enforcement of this boundary. There may be instances where that boundary needs to be reinforced by comments such as, "Please don't," or "Going back to that conversion we had," and decide how many offenses it takes before an ultimatum needs to occur.2. Don#39;t apologize for being human. Don't apologize for getting emotional when discussing boundaries or a situation that feels intense. Simply say, "I have emotion coming up right now because this is really important to me," or "Because this system or program is important to me and I care about this," rather than minimizing our emotions.3. If we think we don't have access to hypnosis, we actually do. Hypnosis is the slowing down of the brain waves into a theta state which we enter often: for example, driving somewhere and not remembering how we got there is when our brains are in theta. Through repetition, practice being aware of those slow moments and using mantras to submit to the subconscious such as, "I am capable of establishing boundaries," and "My power comes from within," or "I am loved."4. Don't be a collector of personal development info or books, take action! All the research can be read and articles full of tips and tricks can be analyzed, but it's not until there is physical practice that results will be made. It will feel daunting and mistakes will be learned, but the change for quality of life improvement will be well worth the leap. Do you envy people who can speak up for themselves easily – without stress or guilt? Or do you wish you could go through life with more freedom – not always worried about what others think or if you're getting it right, being able to make mistakes and move on? If you struggle with perfectionism and people pleasing, this type of life might feel like just a dream. But the truth is that perfectionism and people pleasing are just parts of you – parts that have a good reason for being there. And when you understand how they got there, the role they serve and the attention they need, you can transform them…and live that free, bold, courageous life you long for! In this episode, I'm chatting with life coach Amy Green Smith about her journey of overcoming people pleasing and perfectionism, building self-confidence, learning to speak up for herself and creating a life filled with joy! Amy breaks down why perfectionism and people pleasing are both survival strategies that we learned to keep us safe and how they are connected to beliefs about ourselves. We talked about practical ways to start shifting these beliefs, set boundaries, cultivate more authenticity and boldly stand up for ourselves with kindness! Listen to discover: The root of perfectionism and people pleasing The connection between codependency and people pleasing The situations that can lead to perfectionism The different ways we can experience our inner critic based on sensory processing Practical steps to transform perfectionism and people pleasing Why boundaries matter so much – because our self-worth depends on them! Steps to setting healthy boundaries, with beautiful conversational examples How to cultivate deep, authentic friendships I love the way that Amy connects all of the topics in this episode back to self-worth. Boundaries, accepting compliments and true connection with others are all important because they are part of our self-worth. She also models how standing up for ourselves isn't confrontational and can be done with radical acceptance…even with people we strongly disagree with. If you're ready to understand why you people please or why you feel like you have to be perfect – and what you can do to begin to shift these patterns in your life – press “play” now for a fun, insightful show! "Both perfectionism and people pleasing are symptoms. They're manifestations of a deeper-seated belief about self." - Amy Green Smith "People pleasing is genuinely anytime we are so highly invested in the opinions of other people that we actually shapeshift, twist and contort at a cost to self." - Amy Green Smith "It's rooted a lot in us just genuinely wanting to take care of ourselves." - Amy Green Smith "One of our primary human needs is for one of belonging." - Amy Green Smith "We have emotional feelings that don't feel great, we try to rectify them with physical feelings." - Amy Green Smith "People pleasing is actually a defense mechanism. It's an iteration of our fawn response." - Amy Green Smith "Do not let your silence make you a liar." - Amy Green Smith "Is there anyone that I'm always frustrated with, that I'm always upset about, that I'm building a story about, but have refused to talk to them about it? That is usually a people pleasing dynamic that's happening." - Amy Green Smith "Boundaries can be set with anger and rage...[but] they're not healthy boundaries." - Michelle Chalfant "If it's worth complaining about, then it's probably worth taking action on." - Amy Green Smith "Every time you choose to silence yourself...you send a subconscious message to your mind that your wants, opinions and needs just don't matter as much as someone else's." - Amy Green Smith "You can respect one another without agreeing." - Amy Green Smith "You don't have to agree. Just respect me." - Michelle Chalfant "You can have two completely different opinions about something and still be in relationship with that person." - Michelle Chalfant "It's hard for us to actually be with the goodness in our life." - Amy Green Smith "The receiving piece is huge." - Michelle Chalfant LINKS & RESOURCES Amy Green Smith Website https://amygreensmith.com/ Amy Green Smith Instagram https://instagram.com/heyamygreensmith The Adult Chair® Private Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/theadultchair/ MORE ADULT CHAIR The Adult Chair® Website https://theadultchair.com The Adult Chair® Events https://theadultchair.com/events/ The Adult Chair® Coaching Certification https://theadultchair.com/certification STAY CONNECTED Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themichellechalfant Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheMichelleChalfant/ The Adult Chair® Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theadultchair/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Michellechalfant

I am a recovering people pleaser. I spent most of my life living by a list of shoulds and the expectations of others. I checked all the boxes of being a good wife, mother, employee, daughter, sister... you name it. I never stopped to consider what I actually wanted; what was important to me. And well, we know how that turned out... hello divorced, unhappy, burnt out corporate executive. I know I am not alone in this because I hear this story from women all the time. This week on the podcast I talk with Amy Green Smith who is a Hypnotist and NLP coach who specializes in helping people break free of people pleasing to live happier, more fulfilled lives. We talk in depth about why we do it, how it keeps us stressed out, stuck and unhappy as well as practical tools and strategies that can help us live our most authentic lives.
I'm joined by Amy Green Smith, certified and credentialed life coach and hypnotherapist, masterful speaker, and personal empowerment expert. We are talking all about how to speak up, set boundaries, and deal with diet and body talk from your friends, family, and other people in your life. She's giving us scripts to use, and how to work through the fight or flight response when someone says something that you don't know how to respond to. Show notes: summerinnanen.com/247 In this episode, we talk about: - Some overall things to keep in mind when considering setting a boundary or speaking up, - That you will have to rehearse and practice boundary setting, - How just because someone asks you a question, that does not mean you have to answer, - That people will not make change unless they feel understood, - What message you send to your own mind when you sweep things under the rug, - Advice for being around family with a history of commenting on your body, - Plus so much more! We've all heard of our inner child, right? That wounded inner child who is still reckoning with incidents occurring in our childhood. But, have you ever heard of your “outer child”? Tell me if this sounds familiar: You are going back home to visit your family and the minute you get around your parents, it's like you're 16 all over again. You're angsty, everything is unfair, and you just want to burn incense and listen to music, yet hanging out with your fam makes you want to lash out and yell and scream and maybe break a lava lamp. And suddenly all of the coping mechanisms you've learned in decades of therapy are out the window. This, my friend, is your Outer Child. It's a way in which we regress to earlier versions of ourselves and act out from that place when surrounded by triggering people. And, let's face it, it's often our family. In this week's episode, I dial up Alexa Rae Schiefer, Trauma Coach and former mental health clinician, to ask her some heavy-hitting questions around the trauma we incur from our primary caregivers. We dig into the concept of “Parentification Trauma”, the inner and outer child, what trauma responses tend to look like, and what the hell a Window of Tolerance is and why we should be aware of it. Alexa Rae and I also discuss what it means to self-soothe and how that process can vary depending on what trauma you are up against. We chat about processing the trauma of our childhoods and how, more often than not, we are trying to pretend we don't have any trauma. Yeah, ok. How's that working out? We even talk about what-the-hell trauma even is. If you know you've got a wound, or two, or twenty, to process from your childhood, be sure to grab a pen and paper. This is a good one. This pod explores: The definition of trauma and how we all pretty much have it Understanding Parentification Trauma and how that influences your behavior later on in life What common trauma responses look like and what you can do about them Understanding Abandonment Wounds and how they show up in our lives _______ HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! Marni welcomes credentialed Life Coach, Hypnotherapist, Speaker, Personal Empowerment Expert, and Podcaster, Amy Green Smith to the show. Through her work, Amy helps move individuals to a place of radical personal empowerment and self-worth. She helps people find their voice in her guide, How to Find Your Voice Without Being a Dick. She is highly sought out because of her uncommon style of irreverence, wisdom, and humor. Dating takeaways from this episode: How to stop yourself from people-pleasing Finding your voice and your truth Direct communication skills How women can speak up for themselves Change the trajectory of your life Finding Your Voice [1:56] Amy says if we look at our biological makeup we are programmed to people-please in order to survive. Most of us have heard of the flight, fight, freeze, and fawn instincts. People-pleasing fits into the fawn defense. Fitting in is a fundamental human need because our ancestors needed a group to stay safe and survive. In modern times, it doesn't seem to make sense, but from childhood, we learn that people-pleasing is a safe behavioral tactic. Finding our voice requires more than a quick fix. Amy says we must incorporate new patterns and habits to make the necessary wiring changes to our brains before we can experience true transformation. Becoming aware that you are people-pleasing is the first step to finding your voice, but more importantly, you must take action to make a change. How to Speak Up for Yourself Without Being A D*ck [14:03] Amy reminds us that we cannot make someone feel something. 93% of our communication with another person is paraverbal and nonverbal, which leaves only 3% being the actual words we use. Heightening our emotional intelligence is the path forward when speaking up for ourselves. We must learn to be OK with someone else feeling something different than what we feel. You are responsible for your intention, not your reception. When we speak out of malice, are more combative, or we people-please, we are reacting to a sense of threat. We feel like we are in danger so we revert to what we feel will keep us safe. We must be sure we are in a safe situation; then we can be clear about our truth. Hypnotherapy [29:49] As part of her personal empowerment work, Amy uses hypnotherapy to reprogram the limiting inner critic most of us have. Slowing down our brain waves allows us to embed new belief systems that better serve us. Make a Connection: Visit Our Website Sign Up For Our Ignite Your Life October 2022 Waitlist! This week I have a conversation about shit that matters with unqualified people to share with you. My bestie, Amy Green Smith, helps me unpack the emotional damage humiliation has caused me for so many years and let it be seen for what it is. I had been told by a well-meaning friend that humiliation wasn't something I should feel. After all, the things that happened to me (my ex-husband cheating on me) weren't my fault. Together Amy and I unpack the weight of humiliation, shame, and self-worth. By the end of this episode, I finally settled into the notion that healing is truly a one-day at a time journey. We explore: How earth-shattering it is to actually feel seen. If it is painful to you, it is valid. My inner teenager is pissed. We are all navigating trauma, personally and generationally. Unpacking trauma is labor! There is a tremendous weight of being the one in the family to carry the emotional load. And finally, from Amy, “We all have our shit and we are never done doing the work. There is an element in grief in this knowledge. The work won't be void of hardship. We can just engage it in a more powerful way.” http://andreaowen.com/432

In today's episode of the As Told by Nomads Podcast, join me and Amy Green Smith as we talk about how you can advocate for yourself with grace and kindness. Here, Amy shares how targeting internal beliefs around "enough-ness" influences our ability to handle challenging conversations in life. As we tune in more to what she has to impart, Amy explains her three-part framework for setting boundaries, and so much more.Setting Boundaries: Decide, Deliver, and ReinforceDuring the discussion, Amy shares a three-part framework for boundary setting. This framework focuses on the decision-making, delivery, and reinforcement of the boundaries you want to make. To deliver well on those boundaries, you also have to communicate them well. It's about how you explain and have conversations about the boundaries you're setting. As a tip, rise above your emotions before having conversations. Having an emotion-driven talk is most likely to tilt the balance in communicating, so try not to. When you set boundaries, people are also inclined to test them. Making sure you're clear and consistent about your limits gives the message that you're serious about sticking to your set boundaries.About Amy Green Smith:Whether it be advocating for a new system in the workplace, asking for someone's business, requesting or negotiating a raise, declining a family obligation, or expressing needs to a partner, many women find it extremely difficult to voice their wants, needs, and opinions.
