Spreading the Good Works of John Prine to an Ashland, Ky., Coffeehouse Crowd

At a coffeehouse in Ashland, Ky., 50 years ago this week, Dave Peyton and Charlie Bowen continued their new mission to spread the good news about the work of young singer-songwriter John Prime. As reported in an earlier article here, Charlie and Dave had been listening this this Chicago-based folk wunderkind ever since his 1971 first album. The two, later joined by Flood co-founder Roger Samples, quickly started learning Prine tunes to share and sing along with at the Bowen Bashes and at festivals. The particular song featured in the above music video — one of the oldest audio files in The Flood archives — was only a couple of years old when Peyton and Bowen performed it on a February Friday night at The Catacombs coffeehouse at the Ashland Community College. The SongCharlie and Dave had heard “Please Don't Bury Me” a year or so earlier on Prine's third album, the wonderful Sweet Revenge, The guys were tickled by its sassy irreverence, “a funny song about death,” Bowen commented in his introduction that night in Ashland. In his lyrics, Prine seemed to be reflecting on his own someday-long-in-the-future death: Please don't bury me down in the cold cold ground I'd rather have 'em cut me up and pass me all around Throw my brain in a hurricane, the blind can have my eyes And the deaf can take both of my ears if they don't mind the size. Then When the Song Became Relevant…The song came under poignant re-examination in the spring of 2020 when Prine became one of the first high-profile fatalities of Covid-19 in the first months of the pandemic. In an interview a few years before that, John noted that he had been 27 when he wrote those jocular lines.“That song was originally about this character I had in mind called Tom Brewster,” said Prine. “He dies but he wasn't supposed to, like that scene in those old movies. The angels have to send him back, but they can't the way he is. So they send him back as a rooster, which is why his name is Brewster.“I ended up trashing that whole part,” Prine added, “and came up with this idea of the guy just giving all of his organs away, and I made a whole song out of that. It's the best organ donor campfire song I know of.”More on MortalityLater in his career, Prine frequently gave death further reflection. In 1975, for instance, Johnn penned “He Was In Heaven Before He Died,” inspired by the death of his father four years earlier. And then decades later for what would become his final album Tree of Forgiveness (2018), he wrote “When I Get to Heaven.”Inspired by his surviving cancer in 1998 and again in 2013, his song, the last track on the album, also will always demonstrate that time did not temper Prine's quirky worldview (or otherworldview): Ain't the afterlife grand? I'm gonna get a cocktail, vodka and ginger ale. I'm gonna smoke a cigarette that's nine miles long. I'm gonna kiss that pretty girl on the tilt-a-whirl. Yeah, this old man is goin' to town.Flash Forward…. Waaaaay ForwardWe can't whisk you back to that coffeehouse night 50 years ago. But if you'd like the 2025 version of that evening, set your calendar for this Thursday night, destination: Huntington's Bahnhof WVrsthaus & Biergarten, 745 7th Ave.The Flood will be back at this wonderful establishment to play from 6:30 to 8:30. Join us for an evening of good food, good tunes, and even a bit of that good ol' coffeehouse vibe.Meanwhile, More John? Finally, if you'd like a little more Floodified versions of John's tunes, remember that the free Radio Floodango music streaming service has a randomized playlist of some of the band's favorite Prine pieces.Click here to read all about it. Many weeks ago now, I saw an article on Patheos called "Remembering the Witch in Witchcraft" that really took off on social media. John Beckett, a Druid Priest and author in our community, jumped into the conversation and wrote a response blog to that original article (linked in the episode notes) and, well, I was still in a quandary about it all.And so, I asked him onto the podcast. I respect John and wanted to think this out with him, especially as a Witch from the Deep South (John also has Southern roots). He was more than open to that and the resulting wonderful conversation gave me quite a bit of fodder to think through for the future. It was a chat worth having! Thank you, John.Sometimes, camouflage is a necessary part of of the Craft. But, as John points out: there are risks in shrouding ourselves for too long, too deeply. Today, God is pouring out His Spirit on those that are thirsty. There are many problems in the world that man can't solve, but the Spirit of God has all the answers and the power to bring lasting change in the hearts of mankind. In this message, God is encouraging us to be a light in this dark world and to let the Holy Spirit have His way in our lives. Our Father has promised to pour out His Spirit on ALL flesh. I believe that we are going to see the greatest move of God to ever hit the face of the earth before Jesus returns. It's time to pray for God's glory and pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Enjoy this message on video (above) or audio (below). LISTEN TO AUDIO NOTES: GOD IS POURING OUT HIS SPIRIT This message does not exactly follow these notes, but it is close. I shall complete it. Now is the day salvation. Now is the day of salvation. Walk in all that I have given you. For this is the day that I have made. In this episode we focus on John 1:9-18. In Part 1 one we saw that “in the beginning” of John 1:1, while being a parallel to the Genesis creation, refers directly not to the Genesis creation but to the new beginning that God brings about through the man Jesus, who is metaphorically called “the Word”. In Part 2 we focused on how God in the statement “and the Word was God” is the Father. In this Gospel Jesus declared consistently that it was the Father who dwelt in him who did His, the Father's works. Never in this Gospel is there a “God the Son” or a “God the Word” in Jesus. Time stamps for the current episode, Part 3: 00:17 Review of Parts 1 and 2, and introduction to Part 3 02:23 John 1_9-13, “the world” is not planet earth or the universe. The “world” that came to be in John's Gospel is a segment of human society. Verses 9-13 relate to the coming to be, the birth, of God's children, a new community of God. 04:45 John 1_14, “the Word became flesh”. Is this a statement about “incarnation” or a transformation of essence? Is trans-naturism or trans-essence any more a biblical idea than trans-genderism is? Perhaps these ideas are of the same spirit? Consideration of what the word “became” means. The translation, “So the Word was flesh”. Or, if a change or difference is implied, perhaps a change in method. Hebrews 1_1-2 – God spoke in different ways in past times, but in these latter days He has spoken by a son. That is, by a human being, flesh. John 1_14 begins a new paragraph which is a review and expansion upon information already given. In verses 1-13 the man Jesus (the Word, Light) has been compared to the man John the Baptizer, who was not the Light. A short statement about the conception or birth of Jesus (no where else detailed in John's Gospel) is out of place after a summary of the ministries of the Baptizer and John has been presented. The glory of the Word is from the Father, or originates from the Father. 16:18 John 1_15, More John the Baptizer and Comparison with Jesus! More evidence that the Prologue is not about the Genesis creation. 16:55 John 1_17, Jesus parallel to Moses, through whom both came good things. Moses and Jesus were the channels for these good things, but not the source. The source was God. 17:11 John 1_18 Is the Triune god in John 1? Why do Trinitarians appeal immediately to John 1 when the God of John 1 is not Triune? The “deity of Christ” appeal to John 1. But in John 1, the Word is subordinate to, and dependent upon his God. The Word is not co-eternal with God. The Word has an origin outside of itself. No one has ever seen God, but thousands of people say Jesus Christ. Textual variants of John 1_18, in each case Jesus (the son, unique one, begotten god) who is at the Father's side, is subordinate to the God. 23:32 The context of John's entire Gospel considered. An interpretation of John 1 must be consistent with the entire Gospel. Jesus is a man who told the truth that he heard from God (8:40), who did nothing on his own authority or initiative (5:19, 5:30, 8:28, 8:44). He differentiates himself from God (14:1, etc.). Jesus has a God, the same God as the apostles (20:17). Jesus in the Gospel of John said the Father is the only true God (17:3). The author of the Gospel stated that the reason he recorded the signs Jesus did was so that his readers would believe that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God, that is, not God (20:31, 1:49). 23:48 Summary and Conclusions 31:01 Parallel between Paul in Acts 26_23 and John's Prologue. In the man Jesus, specifically in his life as being the firstborn from the dead, there is light to Israel and the Gentiles. As in John's Prologue, life is first, which gives light (which is the opposite order in Genesis).
