This is Pastor Tom Arnould welcoming you to the Good News Radio Broadcast. In the gospel of John, Jesus said, "Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit." I'll be teaching today about the spiritual fruit that should be evident in the life of every Christian.
“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that bears no fruit, He takes away. And every branch that bears fruit, He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean through the word which I have spoken to you. Remain in Me, as I also remain in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, neither can you, unless you remain in Me. “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who remains in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit. For without Me you can do nothing. If a man does not remain in Me, he is thrown out as a branch and withers. And they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.” John 15:1-6 GOD PLANTS GOD WATERS GOD PRUNES GOD ALLOWS FRUIT GOD GETS GLORY GOD IS THE ROOT JESUS IS VINE WE ARE BRANCHES “do not boast against the branches. If you boast, remember you do not sustain the root, but the root sustains you.” Romans 11:18 CHECK THE SEED CHECK THE SOIL CHECK THE SON EXPOSURE

It was my fault. One of those things that came about because of whole lot of factors, but which can ultimately be boiled down to doing too much at once. Work, family, life. I was too stretched. Too stressed. And something gave. But why did it have to be the trees? This will sound really crazy, but I only realised afterwards that maybe the single-biggest reason I bought my home, was the trees. We've got a section that slowly slopes down, so the backyard is at a lower level than the main living area. It means you would step in off the street, walk into the main living area on the top storey, and suddenly be eye-to-eye with a huge wall of green. A jacaranda, a plane tree, a karaka and a pohutakawa, all of them probably decades old, and with enough thickness in the coverage that you couldn't see beyond them. I would step out of Auckland, the noise and the traffic, and into this perfect green sanctuary. A cocoon. Tui, blackbirds, piwaka, they loved it. The problem with a perfect green canopy with no light passing through is my neighbour noticed no light was passing through. She asked if we could prune the trees. Just to let some morning light through. They must have been almost twenty metres high. I wanted to do the neighbourly thing. A lovely guy came around and surveyed the canopy. “We'll do it on Thursday.” he said. I think it was a communication thing, which is another reason why I take the blame. If anyone should be able to communicate, it's the professional communicator, right? But my wife and I were at work all day, and by the time we got home, it was done. The trees weren't just pruned, they were pruned. Metres taken out of them, right across the top. A straight, brutal cut. Like a bowl cut, but for trees. With all of thickest green canopy, the leaves that provided such a dense, rich canopy, the favourite branches for tui and the piwakawaka, gone. I walked into my lounge, where previously I'd stare out at a wall of green. I stared out at a wall of houses. I looked at the stumps of the branches, and I felt tears prick in my eyes. My wife didn't hold back. She walked in the front door, looked at the trees and tears streamed down her face. The neighbour was delighted at how much light was now passing through. Two nights have passed. Both nights I've had broken sleep, lying there thinking about the trees. My wife isn't much better. She said she felt we damaged their wairua. I can rationalise it. The trees aren't dead. And I do know they'll grow back. It may even be that their prune encourages rich, fulsome, rapid new growth. And when there are more leaves and coverage instead of stumpy branches, it'll be a whole lot less brutal. But no amount of fertiliser or hugs can really speed up the process. We're looking at years before they are back to where they were. And honestly, I feel terrible about it. I feel stupid. I feel guilty, and I feel grief. Yeah. I grieve for my trees. I know that in the future I'll laugh about it, but right now it is a very painful lesson. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. We were grafted onto Jesus at our Baptism. We must remain in Him and draw life from Jesus.Prune your words, your actions, and your activities so you can bear good fruit.
April 28, 2024 - Pruned - Rev. Austin Carty by Boulevard Baptist Church
Our Lord prunes off the dead and non-bearing branches of our lives so that we can produce good fruit. It is painful, but necessary. #Catholic #homily #Scripture #GospelOfTheDay Sign up to have podcasts and blog posts emailed to you: http://eepurl.com/ioCgy2 Give feedback at https://forms.gle/gGhujv39g43BUxmK6 Readings are found at https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/042824.cfm
Jesus said to his disciples: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you.” John 15:1–3Pruning a vine is an important part of helping it to grow and produce not only more fruit but the best fruit. If left unpruned, a grape vine will eventually produce less fruit and poorer quality fruit. Good pruning helps to direct the nourishment of the vine to the new buds that are most fruitful.Jesus' teaching above uses the imagery of pruning a vine to help us understand that faith must lead to charity. First, Jesus says that He is the “true vine.” He is the only source of the nourishment we need for the new life of grace. He is the only way to Heaven and salvation. Knowing our Lord and being attached to Him firmly is faith. Second, our Lord says that He takes away every branch that does not bear fruit. This indicates that faith without the good fruit of charity is dead and is like a branch on a vine that produces nothing. Third, when Jesus finds a branch that bears good fruit, he doesn't leave it alone. Instead, He prunes it with loving attention so that “it bears more fruit.”To apply these teachings to your own life, begin by looking at your faith as if it were a branch firmly attached to a vine. Do you believe all that God has spoken through His holy Word? It is useful to regularly examine your conscience in regard to your faith. Since faith is the first step in the spiritual life, it must remain firmly grounded in the Truth God has revealed. This means we must regularly study the Word of God as it is revealed through the Scriptures and the catechetical teachings of the Church, and assent to those teachings with all our mind.Next, after affirming your faith in all that God has spoken through the Scriptures and the Church, try to examine your charity. Do you see concrete acts of love in your life that result from your faith? In other words, we can “love” many things in a purely emotional sort of way. But charity is based on faith, not on how we feel. Charity is the fruit of faith. What acts of charity can you point to in your life? What have you sensed God calling you to do in a selfless and sacrificial way? Have you done it?Finally, when you discover the ways that charity is alive within you, know that God will focus His pruning there. Pruning can be painful. It will require sacrifice, patience in the face of trial, overcoming selfishness, and doing things you don't feel like doing. In fact, sometimes God even makes charitable acts seem unpleasant as a way of pruning your motivations and making them more pure, based more on faith than on emotion. But this is good.Reflect, today, upon this holy imagery from Jesus. It's a lesson from nature that reveals the supernatural life of grace at work. Don't be deterred by the pruning God wants to do. Embrace suffering with love, respond to injustice with forgiveness, offer mercy when you don't feel like it, and seek to serve selflessly those who seem undeserving. Doing so will prune you so that God will be able to build up His Kingdom in glorious ways through you.Jesus, most glorious Vine, You and You alone are the source of all nourishment in life. From You all good things come. Help me to have a firm faith in You and all that You have revealed, so that this faith will bud forth and bring about an abundance of good fruit for the glorious building up of Your Kingdom. In life, just as we experience seasons of growth, sometimes we're going to experience pruning seasons. The key is to remember that the difficulty is only temporary. Our natural inclination is to run away from being pruned, but without being pruned, we will be ruined. In this episode of God Talk, we will talk about how to embrace the season of being pruned by God.
In this episode, Ken Lain, The Mountain Gardener covers why roses and hedges are best pruned in March. Embrace March's mild days to prune for perfect roses and robust hedges. Old, gnarled rose canes yield fewer, tinier flowers. Trim them back for new growth that promises larger, more fragrant blooms—ideal for the fair. In Arizona's heartland, timely pruning works with nature, not against it, making your gardening smoother. It's also the season to shape hedges from Red Tip Photinias to Cotoneasters. Proper pruning now sets the stage for a verdant spring display.Listen to Mountain Gardener on Cast11: https://cast11.com/mountain-gardener-with-ken-lain-gardening-podcast/Follow Cast11 on Facebook: https://Facebook.com/CAST11AZFollow Cast11 on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cast11_podcast_network/
Pruned, Abiding and Bearing Fruit
One of the marks of the people of God is they are those who allow the pruning of God. Pruning is part of God's process — but that doesn't mean it's pain free. How do you know you're being pruned? How do you discern why? What do you do in the midst of it? And why is pruning actually a good thing?
