This episode begins with some surprising research the suggests there is a silver lining to being interrupted. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/08/210803175253.htm What determines whether you are an introvert or extrovert? Is one better than the other? Can you change which one you are? Are all introverts shy? These are just a few of the questions I tackle in my conversation with Holley Gerth. Holly hosts the podcast More Than Small Talk (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/more-than-small-talk-with-suzanne-holley-jennifer-klrc/id1447539391) and she is also author of the book The Powerful Purpose of Introverts (https://amzn.to/2XEHrJl). Whether you consider yourself an introvert, extrovert, or somewhere in the middle, you should hear what she has to say. Holly's website is www.holleygerth.com Have you noticed how certain smells and odors can instantly transport you back to a time or place in your past? Why do you like some smells but hate others? Is there any smell that people universally love or hate? Your sense of smell is unlike any other sense you have. And here to help you understand how it works is Ann-Sophie Barwich. She is a cognitive scientist, an empirical philosopher as well as an assistant professor at Indiana University Bloomington. She is also author of the book. Smellosophy: What the Nose Tells the Mind (https://amzn.to/2W52jsJ) Do you know what MAYDAY or SOS really mean? Paralyzed to Powerful Purpose: Cat Kozuch Shares Her Incredible Story

This is an inspiring story that you won't want to miss a single second of. Guest, Cat Kozuch, shares how she used the power of affirmations, visualization and a positive mindset to prove the medical team wrong after a horrific accident left her paralyzed from the neck down. Cat's ability to keep a positive mindset through her grim diagnosis has helped her overcome much in life and she's now using her experience to help sprinkle positivity and bring the power of affirmations into children's lives with her new product, Believe a Buddy. About Cat: Cat Kozuch, the founder of Believe a Buddy, whose life story is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and unwavering belief in the face of adversity. Cat, an Adelaide-born Arizona immigrant and motivational survivor, defied the odds after a life-altering dune buggy accident in 2008, leaving her initially paralyzed. Cat broke her back in 2 places, and after an emergency surgery, doctors delivered the crushing news that she would never walk again. Instead of believing in her daunting diagnosis, Cat wrote an affirmation on her hospital whiteboard that stated, "Cat will walk out of here!...duh!". After weeks of speaking her affirmation out loud, Cat was frustrated and started yelling at her big toe, "BIG TOE MOVE, BIG TOE MOVE, BIG TOE MOVE" and right before her eyes, a miracle happened, her big toe moved the tiniest bit! After hundreds of hours of physical therapy, three months later, Cat walked out of the hospital. During her three-month hospital stay, her father was traveling for work, and every time he came back to visit her, he brought her a new teddy bear. The collection of teddy bears were pinned around the whiteboard affirmation. Cat's inspirational affirmation with the blend of cute teddy bears from her father led to the creation of Believe a Buddy. Believe a Buddy was born from Cat's desire to share her story of triumph and inspire kids facing their own challenges. Through the power of affirmations and the comforting companionship of teddy bears, Believe a Buddy helps kids believe in themselves. Cat Kozuch's life is a shining example of the human spirit's resilience and the transformative power of belief. Her journey from paralysis to walking again serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us all that with unwavering determination and a positive mindset, anything is possible. Through Believe a Buddy, Cat continues to touch lives, spreading her message of hope and inspiring others to believe in their own miracles. This conversation with author and speaker Holley Gerth—all about the power of being an introvert—originally aired on August 3rd, 2022. In her newest book, The Powerful Purpose of Introverts, author and speaker Holley Gerth helps us understand the vital role introverts play and—if you are an introvert—how to align with your God-given purpose. For this week's episode of Unapologetic, Julia and Holley dive into why happiness can often feel different for introverts and extroverts, how to lean into God's call on your life and your unique gifts, and Holley's best advice for parenting a child who's more introverted or extroverted than you are. Imagine that one of your best friends is going through an incredibly difficult time. Maybe she even ends up in the hospital, and her children are all at home missing her like crazy, and she is struggling to be away from them, and her husband is trying to hold it all together. There are a lot of tests your friend has to go through. Some painful. She's scared. Her family is scared. You're scared. How do you respond? If you're on the more introverted side of the scale, chances are, you might recoil to the safety of your own home, wanting to help but unsure of how to do so. Or maybe you can't even imagine how you'd be able to walk into your friend's hospital room without losing it. And how is that going to make anything better? I was reading Holley Gerth's book, The Powerful Purpose of Introverts, and I came upon a passage that explains what happens when introverts find themselves in this situation. She shares that though introverts are often seen as distant, aloof, and apathetic, the opposite is usually true. She writes,  "Many introverts actually care so much it overwhelms them." Is that you? Introvert or not, do you care so much that the pain of others is overwhelming? Do you cry when you see others crying? Does your heart break when you see the wounds in someone else's heart? Today, we are talking about how to recognize overwhelm and what we can do when we experience it.  Kari   RELATED EPISODES + RESOURCES: ·       Episode 115: Standing Between: The Ministry of Intercession ·       Episode 114: [Book Recommendation] The Powerful Purpose of Introverts by Holley Gerth ·       Episode 103: 6 Strategies to Manage Overwhelm, Stress, and Change ·       Courageous Care Masterclass: Learn to C.A.R.E. “Think… of the last time you were with people. In whatever situation you pictured, half or more of the people around you were likely introverts—even if it didn't seem like it. Now imagine with me a world in which 100 percent of people, introverts and extroverts, dare to be who they are.  What if we all understood how we're wired, intentionally used our strengths to serve the greater good, and thrived for a lifetime? Imagine what it would be like for you to live more like that every day.” (Holley Gerth) How did those words resonate with you? I know there has been a lot said about introverts. Yet rather than treating it like a fad that is here one day and gone the next, I believe there is a lot of value into learning more about how God has designed each one of us. This week on Real Talk with Rachael I'm chatting once again with my friend, Holley Gerth. Holley is a Wall Street Journal bestselling author of several books, including The Powerful Purpose of Introverts and What your Mind Needs for Anxious Moments. She's also the cohost of the More than Small Talk podcast, which recently passed one million downloads. Holley is married to Mark, a Mama to Lovelle, and Nana to Eula and Clem. Key Points from Our Conversation: It is not a sin to experience anxiety whether it's biological or Biblical. Philippians 4:6 which instructs us to "be anxious for nothing" is meant as a reassurance, not a judgment. God is our ally in helping us understand the root cause of our anxieties.   When experiencing anxiety, start by doing something physical to regulate your brain. Then instead of asking, "What's wrong with me?" reframe and consider what you can do now, at the moment like take deep breaths, get a drink, or walk away.  If you struggle with an inner critic, it's important to be gentle with yourself. Pause and listen to what your body is trying to tell you. If you find yourself going back to the critic, try talking to yourself like someone you love. "We don't talk that way to people. Apologize and try again." Music can be very beneficial to aid with anxiety. We can use it to feel more joyful or to calm us down and help us shift to a different space. “What we mentally rehearse matters.” Instead of thinking about what happens if things go wrong, imagine what would happen if they go right. We can mentally practice what we want to become real. It feels silly, but it's the same thing as worry.  If you struggle to stay still, practice moving meditation. You don't have to sit still and silently to connect with God. Movement is bilateral stimulation which is beneficial in creating new thought patterns. Anxiety is generally caused by fear. But through Christ, we don't have to fear - we are loved. Ask what is the lie, what is the truth, and what do I want to change.  Resources: Envision app Let's Get Real Practical: Make coloring while listening to music a regular part of your routine. How To Write a Powerful Purpose Statement

Lead with Purpose

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 31, 2023 12:29

On this episode of the Lead With Purpose podcast host, Tze Ching Yeung, talks about how to write a powerful purpose statement as many companies now know what drives business growth is purpose beyond profit, which is why having a purpose statement in place is essential from the day you start your company. KEY TAKEAWAYS Having a powerful purpose statement in place will help guide your organisation, it will also help guide your customers in terms of whether they like you or not, if they agree with it, it's more likely they'll follow you. It's a good tool to also attract new customers. A purpose statement is a statement that describes the reason why a company exists and the impact that it has on those it serves. It's different to a mission or value statement. Often companies put out statements including all three which can be a bit confusing. A purpose statement is why you're doing what you're doing, a mission statement describes more what your company does, and a value statement is more about the guiding principles or priorities of a company, such as great customer service, innovative products, how you deliver on your goals. Why, what and how. A great purpose statement should not be static, it should be able to follow the growth of the company. It should not be based on a particular service or product, it is the purpose of the whole of the organisation, so when you scale, grow and add more product lines and services, your purpose statements needs to be able to remain the same and true to what your company does. Keep it short and concise, between 6-20 words, though 20 is a bit on the long side. Keep it inspirational and motivational so employees know why they're coming to work. A purpose is never achieved, but acts like a guiding star for your organisation. It needs to be sincere and simple, applicable and motivational to all stakeholders, people need to believe that this is what you believe in as an organisation, brand or business owner. It should contain three components: a verb, an intention and an outcome/beneficiary.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Why does your company or brand do what it does, aside from commercial interest? What makes your company stand out?'‘If people agree with your purpose, it becomes a really powerful tool to attract them to you.'‘Our purpose, as a business owner, should definitely be in line with our own personal purpose.'‘A purpose statement is not just for attracting customer, it's for guiding employees, the organisation and stakeholders that are involved in your company, to inspire and help motivate them to do the work that they need to do.' ABOUT THE HOST Tze Ching started her entrepreneurial journey back in 2007 with the launch of a sustainable clothing and home furnishing ecommerce business. Next, she created a sustainable fashion brand. In 2019, she launched a social enterprise to help raise awareness about the negative impact of fashion at schools and colleges.  Through the 15-year journey, she learned so much, but easily the most meaningful lesson learned was about the importance of marketing. There is a school of thought that infers we are  socially conditioned creatures whose futures have been determined by our pasts and believe an individual's past controls his or her destiny. However, I do not believe that an individual's future has to be controlled by their painful past. No doubt, all of us have experienced painful situations. Those moments become time stamps in our life story. At times, if we are not careful, those painful experiences can become a heavy weight that causes us to stumble.  No doubt, many of us have endured traumatic situations that left us feeling trapped in an emotional prison.  We long for freedom from those thoughts that leave us feeling stuck. No doubt, the trauma is real. However, I do not believe your future is already determined. I believe there's a way for your future to be better than your past. Part of the healing journey is learning to turn you painful past into purpose. God desires to take what the enemy meant for evil and turn it into something good. God desires to use our painful past to help others experience healing. While we want to “let go” of our past, what we really need is to  “let God” use our past. That's the ultimate healing!  If you're ready to start the healing journey, then this episode is for you. Remember, great lives are not born, they're built. Let's start building!

There's a yawning rift between the United States' purpose and the reality that 97% of us are unhealthy, 84% of us are stressed out, 78% of us are living paycheck to paycheck. And, life is a lot worse for women and BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities. Brandon Peele, author of Purpose Work Nation: Leading Organizations in Service of Our Nation's Powerful Purpose, talks about the talent development, DE&I, learning, corporate culture and wellness practices businesses can use to bridge the rift and provide what people need to flourish.

“We don't do this well” is a phrase you will often hear on Sunday mornings at Eastgate. This well used phrase is meant to be a reminder that we do not participate in a works based salvation system. We are all invited to rely, not on our own abilities, but the consistent grace of God and the sacrifice made by Jesus on the cross. In this understanding, and the secure place of belonging to God, we are able to begin making those positive changes in our daily life. This Sunday, we are going to be reading Luke 19:11-27, and there we will find a parable that seems to be giving us a job while we wait for Jesus' return. The snag however, is that in this parable, the King (who seems to be representing Jesus) returns to let his servants know that he has been keeping track of their work and he is angry with the one servant who didn't do their job well.In our private reading of scripture we might be tempted to skip over the parts of the text that don't fit neatly in our narrative, but when we study a whole book together as the church we are forced to confront every word of Jesus that's recorded. We are forced to ask questions like, “Is it still okay if I don't do this well even though these verses show a side of Jesus that is angry with someone who doesn't do this well?” How might we balance this text with the emphasis we find on grace in other parts of the Gospel?Together, at Eastgate, we will be exploring the context of these verses, and we'll search for the truth of what Jesus was trying to communicate here… even if it means we find ourselves challenged along the way.I hope you can join us as we examine this intriguing passage.Click here for a pdf of the teaching slideshow.
