Many men feel the need to always be right in relationships, which can often lead to communication breakdowns and conflict. Once in a relationship, it's no longer about “you vs. me,” but rather about “us,” requiring mutual respect and honoring each other's feelings. Matthew Hoffman emphasizes avoiding known “landmines” in relationships—like repeatedly doing things that upset your partner—and deciding if a conflict is worth escalating. Jeremy Roadruck encourages men to stop settling for “good enough” relationships and to view communication as a toolset, like fitness routines or income streams, with multiple ways to approach and resolve issues. Asking for clarification and creating a “feedback loop” are vital tools for building strong, healthy relationships. Tina Huggins notes that women, particularly those with past marriages, may also feel the need to be right to prevent repeating past mistakes, adding another layer of complexity to modern relationships. #texasvaluesreport with special guest Matthew Hoffman, Legal Counsel, Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), and host Jonathan Saenz, President & Attorney, Texas Values After the Biden administration announced its new Title IX rule, Alliance Defending Freedom worked to file lawsuits challenging various aspects of the rule across several states. Each of these cases has different specifics, but they all have one thing in common: The Biden administration's radical redefinition of sex and the damage that it causes. These lawsuits are a small portion of ADF's work to defend free speech and protect women's privacy and sports. Below is a list of ADF cases challenging these rules: [Filed May 21, 2024]: Carroll Independent School District v. United States Department of Education - ADF represents Carroll Independent School District which operates 11 schools serving more than 8,400 students. [Filed April 30, 2024]: Rapides Parish School Board v. United States Department of Education - ADF represents Rapides Parish School Board which serves 42 schools and more than 20,000 students. [Filed May 3, 2024] Tennessee v. Cardona - ADF moved to intervene on behalf of Adaleia Cross, a female athlete who's experienced unfair competition and sexual harassment by a male athlete, and Christian Educators who want the freedom to speak the truth about biological reality without punishment. [Filed May 7, 2024] Arkansas v. United States Department of Education - ADF represents 10th-grader, female athlete Amelia Ford, who wants to protect women's privacy and safety, stand up for free speech, and secure fairness for women's sports. - ADF is co-plaintiff with Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska. [Filed May 14, 2024] Kansas v. U.S. Department of Education - ADF represents 7th grader Katie Rowland who feels uncomfortable sharing a restroom with males. - ADF will file on Katie's behalf as co-plaintiff with Kansas, Utah, Wyoming, and Alaska. This year's W.S. Desmond Pacey Memorial Lecture at UNB is on a very timely topic - the politics of decarbonization. We speak to guest lecturer U of T professor Matthew Hoffman.
"Faith Under Fire" from Family Life A reversal by campus leadership will now allow a group of conservative students to receive official recognition for their local chapter of Turning Point USA at SUNY/Cortland. The student senate there had initially vetoed approval of Turning Point as a campus organization. However, a First Amendment lawsuit was filed, claiming that the senate had discriminated against the students' Constitutionally-protected viewpoints and that opponents had launched a planned assault on the students bringing a petition for consideration. According to the Alliance Defending Freedom, the petitioners endured 100 minutes of questioning and demeaning responses from student senators and a philosophy professor. Students Gabriella Delorenzo and Megan Rothmund next took there concerns to the college president. Erik Bitterbaum warned that they would likely be denied again, telling them, “We silence voices all the time in this country. That's the tragedy and also the greatness of democracy.” A review committee at the State University of New York school reversed the rejection, giving the Turning Point chapter the same rights and privileges of other officially-sanctioned campus organizations. In this exclusive Family Life interview, ADF attorney Matthew Hoffman gives background on this specific lawsuit (which as of now continues to be pending, as ADF wishes to assure that SUNY/Cortland's policies protect a full range of viewpoints in future decisions). Hoffman, who also works with ADF's Center for Academic Freedom, also offers his perspectives on freedom of speech and thought on campus and in the culture, and the danger that officials who try to shut down or punish prominent groups and speakers also have a "chilling effect" on others who agree with divergent viewpoints. For more information: The Alliance Defending Freedom: ADFlegal.org Specifics on the case and SUNY's two actions: adflegal.org/case/turning-point-usa-suny-cortland-v-cortland-college-student-association Matthew Hoffman: biography Turning Point USA: national website SUNY/Cortland: Student Government Association Family Life News has also reached out to SUNY officials for their comments.
It is 4 pm on Thursday, November 11, 2010, in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, when a phone call comes from police. On the line is Valerie Haythorn, manager of the nearby Dairy Queen, who is concerned that her employee 32 year- 32-year-old Tina Herrmann, has not shown up to work today or the previous day. This was very unlike Tina's character, who has always been dependable. Valerie tells the police she is so worried she goes to Tina's house to check on her. She is there as she is phoning the police. She informs police that she went inside the house via a rear window. Tina lives in the home with her two children, 13-year-old Sarah and 11-year-old Kody, and her live-in boyfriend. She informs officers that there is blood everywhere. The officer tells her to stay outside, and they are on their way. Once officers are on the scene, they encounter a blood bath. The problem is that although blood was everywhere, there were no bodies. It was as if the family had disappeared. In Apple Valley, Ohio, 32 y/o Tina Herman never showed up for her 4 o'clock shift shift at dairy queen. When she no call no showed, her employees tried calling and texting to see if Tina was okay but was met with no answer. Tina's manager, Valarie Haythorn, drove to TIna's house to check up on her and saw Tina's truck in the driveway along with an unknown car and lights on in the house. But when she knocked on the door, there was no answer so she left note on door but got a really bad feeling and called the police. The next day, Valerie returned to Tina's house and snuck inside through a window to see if Tina was okay. Valarie was then met with a horrific and bloody scene. There was blood on the carpets, walls, splatters and drag marks that covered the home. But when police showed up shortly after to investigate, they found no bodies and no evidence to who could've done this. That was until police found a Walmart receipt for rope and trash bags and found the buyer of the items was 30 year-old Matthew Hoffman. And when Matthew was captured and arrested, the details of where the family was and what he did to them would only get darker. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The topic of relationships come up often in my conversations on Camera Ready & Abel. This is no surprise since media and entertainment are relationship-driven industries. People like to work with people they know and trust to to get the work done on time, on budget and well executed. It's also a fact that media and entertainment are referral driven businesses, and people recommend people they know, like, and trust. So I've pulled together a best-of featuring snippets from my conversations with Emily Grace, J.D. Durkin, Buki Elegbede, and Matthew Hoffman who all advanced their careers in MAJOR ways by nurturing relationships that turned into opportunities because of the people who knew them. Career coach and Sundance award-winning actress, Emily Grace, tells us how she got her break as an actor, in the role that won her the award at Sundance, without an agent! J.D. Durkin, host and reporter at the New York Stock Exchange for the financial news site The Street who previously created the Washington Bureau for Cheddar News when he was their White House correspondent explains how he came to Washington as an outsider with zero contacts and developed key relationships by being patient and doing simple things that no one else seemed to be doing. Television host, producer and journalist, Buki Elegbede, moved from behind the camera to in front when he won PBS' Create Cooking Challenge and it was the relationships that were formed there that helped launch him to the next level and create Table For All with Buki Elegbede which was nominated for multiple Emmy awards this year! TV host, media personality and popular narrator, Matthew Hoffman, got his big break when he was invited to audition to be the official narrator of the US version of the UK TV smash Love Island. Matthew was competing with household name talent and felt there was absolutely no way he was ever going to book the job, but he was so honored to be invited to audition that he decided to go all out for it, not to get hired, but to maintain his relationship with the casting team and production company so that they would call him again for the next opportunity. Matthew's story inspires me every time I listen to it. Matthew, like Buki, knows his being industrious is a superpower. My conversations with Emily, J.D., Buki, and Matthew are bound together by the phrase, Relationships: It's Who Knows You! If you are looking for help tapping into your super-powers and advancing your career, I am here for you! Please send me a note via my website abelintermedia.com and be sure to download my free ebook, 12 Tips for Success on Camera.

Yes, you read that wordy title right. in late 2010 a man by the name of Matthew Hoffman entered the home of the Herrmann's, killed Tina (Mom), Kody (Son), and Stephanie (mom's friend), dismembered them and stashed them away. On top of that, he kidnapped 13-year-old Sarah and kept her captive for four long days. He did unspeakable things to poor Sarah who, when found, was just worried about her school attendance. Hoffman was dubbed the leaf killer not just because he was profession tree trimmer, but more so due to the fact his home was filled floor to ceiling with leaves. Just thousand and thousands of leaves. Learn more about this strange guy and his heinous crimes in the episode. Brian chats with Matthew Hoffman, the founder of You Are Beautiful, a Chicago-based company that uses art to provide kindness, compassion, and community when it's needed most. On the episode, Matthew shared how he became an accidental entrepreneur and some of the hard lessons he's learned as a business owner and artist. He also digs deep into using feedback to grow and refine your business. Episode Highlights Mission-driven businesses have a message. When Matthew started making his signature You Are Beautiful stickers that would eventually become a business, he had a clear message that he wanted to share with the world. He thinks the same kind of purposeful messaging separates mission-driven businesses from the rest. “It's all about having a clear mission or message and trying to share that with the world,” Matthew said. You can be an “accidental” entrepreneur. Some people start a business with the desire to be an entrepreneur. But other entrepreneurs, like Matthew, don't originally dream of running their own businesses. In Matthew's case, growing demand from his community was the catalyst to take his sticker business online and for profit. “I say I am sort of an accidental business owner because for the first years, the stickers were absolutely free, then people were begging me to let them buy them,” Matthew said. “I finally began to offer them for sale on the website … and that began growing the community even bigger.” Treat customers and employees well. One tip that Matthew shared throughout the podcast is the importance of treating people the way you want to be treated. Recognizing that he can't build a business alone, Matthew tries to cultivate a family-style company culture that is fun, drama-free, and supportive. He also prioritizes the customer experience with dedicated customer service and an online review system. “To find those people that support you and help fill you up is critical,” he said. Grow from your mistakes. While Matthew always strove to overdeliver through his business, his track record hasn't been perfect. After his stickers appeared on Oprah's Super Soul Sunday program, You Are Beautiful got so many orders that he couldn't fulfill them all and his payment system didn't allow him to reach customers with updates. That experience led him to overhaul his approach to e-commerce in order to deliver the premium service he wanted to give customers. “I didn't want to disappoint or upset, and I always want to overdeliver,” Matthew said. “That allowed me to set up a really successful and rigorous system.” Resources + Links You Are Beautiful: Website, Instagram, Facebook Matthew's Social Media: Website, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook Brian's Social Media: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook About Brian and the Mission Driven Business Podcast Brian Thompson, JD/CFP, is a tax attorney and certified financial planner who specializes in providing comprehensive financial planning to LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs who run mission-driven businesses. When we left off in part one, Matthew Hoffman had tied Sarah Maynard up so that he could take a nap after brutally killing three of her loved ones. Part two picks up with Matthew clean up the scene while keeping Sarah locked in his cold, dark basement where she was left to sit on a makeshift bed made from, you guessed it....leaves. While Matthew was working on the rest of his plan, like burning down the home, the police were working behind the scenes and luckily able to rescue Sarah.
