On this episode of Little Column A, Little Column B, hosts Will Alimonos and Zach Bishop cover everything from viral sports memorabilia auctions and NBA Finals drama to college sports controversies and upcoming FIFA World Cup changes. The show opens with the surprising auction of the courtside seat famously occupied by Taylor Swift, leading to a discussion about celebrity influence in sports, memorabilia culture, and why fan experiences continue to command premium prices. From there, the conversation shifts to the Knicks-Spurs Finals matchup, where the hosts break down a physical, tightly contested series filled with controversial officiating, dramatic momentum swings, and late-game heroics. Will and Zach discuss Jalen Brunson's enormous offensive workload, Victor Wembanyama's defensive dominance, Dylan Harper's emergence on the biggest stage, and how coaching adjustments and lineup decisions have shaped the series. They also debate whether the NBA's current officiating style is helping or hurting the product, the value of home-court advantage, and the growing costs of attending major sporting events. The conversation expands into fan culture, including arrests and incidents surrounding New York crowds, the rise of watch parties as an alternative to expensive tickets, and how teams and cities are creating new ways for fans to experience championship runs. Beyond the playoffs, the hosts tackle stadium and scheduling debates across sports, including relocation rumors surrounding the Chicago Bears and the decision to stage a major college basketball game inside a baseball stadium. They examine the pros and cons of unconventional venues and how leagues continue searching for unique event experiences. The episode also covers the developing college football gambling scandal involving Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Soresby, the challenges of NCAA enforcement in the modern era, and the broader implications for college athletics. To close the show, Will and Zach preview the upcoming FIFA World Cup, discussing new rule changes, VAR adjustments, hydration-break procedures, scheduling concerns for American viewers, and how the tournament experience may differ from previous editions. The episode wraps up with a quick salute to Ryan Martin's remarkable endurance shooting record and a look ahead at what sports fans should be watching next. Some players are born into the game — Tommy McCabe is one of them. Raised in New Jersey by a father who coached at the legendary St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, Tommy grew up with soccer in his blood. But it wasn't just local fields that shaped him. A stint living in London, time spent playing for a Portuguese club outside Newark, and years at PDA Academy gave Tommy a cultural richness and soccer education that most players never experience. That foundation carried him to the U.S. U17 Residency Academy, then to Notre Dame under the legendary Bobby Clark, and eventually to the professional ranks — selected 29th overall by FC Cincinnati in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft. The road since hasn't always been smooth. Bouncing between clubs, navigating adversity, and finding his footing at the pro level has tested him. But today, Tommy is thriving as a key midfielder for the Oakland Roots in USL Championship under head coach Ryan Martin. If you loved this episode, drop us a review and rating — it genuinely helps us grow! ⚽

Free AIO Audit - Click Here. How Australian eCommerce Brands Can Rank in AI Overviews (AIO) in 2026AI is changing how Australians discover and buy products online. In this episode, Ryan Martin sits down with Patrick Dhital one of Australia's leading SEO and AIO specialists — to break down exactly what eCommerce founders need to do right now to appear in AI-generated search results across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. If your brand isn't showing up when a CEO or customer searches for your category on an AI engine, this episode is for you.AI engines read structured data. That means moving your most important claims out of body paragraphs and into clear, structured page elements — headings, quick-facts boxes, certifications, awards — so AI can find and weight them correctly.Stop saying "award-winning product." Say which award you actually won, and give it its own heading on the page. This also includes schema markup and ensuring your meta copy is specific, not vague. Specificity signals trust to AI engines.Search behaviour has shifted from "best compression socks" to "what compression socks help me recover after a long-haul flight?" Your content strategy needs to follow. That means blogs and articles built around real customer questions — not AI-generated filler. The best content comes from knowing your customer better than any agency can. What questions do they ask you? Start there.Within those articles, include product carousels, CTAs, and comparison guides. Don't build content just for AIO — make it genuinely useful for the people landing on it.Being mentioned in a Vogue listicle on "top Australian knitwear brands" isn't just good PR — it's how AI engines discover and recommend you. Build backlinks and placements in topically relevant articles and listicles so that when an LLM goes looking, it finds your brand in credible, third-party sources.Social media presence matters too. If people are talking about your brand positively on Reddit or Quora, AI engines will surface that. If they're not — or if the reviews are bad — that surfaces too.AIO needs SEO to work. If you're not ranking on Google, AI engines won't find you either. The fundamentals haven't changed — they're the foundation.Be specific, not general. "Award-winning" means nothing to an AI. "Winner of the 2024 Good Design Award" does. Pull specifics out of paragraphs and into structured elements.Your content strategy should sound like your customer. Conversational queries are longer and more specific than ever. Write content that matches how real people talk — not how keyword tools think.Bad reviews can hurt you in AI, fast. What appears on Trustpilot, Reddit, or Quora is fair game for AI engines. Brand reputation management is now part of AIO.No single channel fixes everything. The brands with the best AIO results are also running Google Ads, social ads, email, and PR. It all compounds.ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, Ahrefs, SEMrush, Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Reddit, Quora, Trustpilot, Shopify, Remarkable DigitalWant a free AIO audit? AUS POST 2026 ECOMMERCE REPORT - DOWNLOAD HEREFREE SEO AUDIT HEREAustralian eCommerce is entering a new era, and standing still is no longer an option. In this episode, Ryan Martin sits down with Jordan Berke, CEO and founder of global retail strategy firm Tomorrow, to unpack the biggest takeaways from the upcoming Australia Post eCommerce Report 2026.Jordan explains why Australia is no longer “catching up” in eCommerce. It is becoming one of the most competitive and fast-moving retail markets in the world. With marketplaces accelerating, delivery expectations rising, AI changing product discovery, and shoppers becoming more willing to switch brands, Australian retailers are facing a make-or-break moment. They dig into what's driving the reported $86.2 billion in Australian eCommerce spend, why faster delivery is directly tied to conversion, how agentic AI is changing SEO and shopping behaviour, and what brands must do now to compete with Amazon, Temu, Shein, and the world's best digital experiences. This is a must-listen for eCommerce founders, marketers, retailers, and brands that want to stay relevant in 2026 and beyond. Why Australia is reaching a major eCommerce inflection pointHow marketplaces are reshaping the retail landscapeWhy delivery speed has become one of the biggest conversion leversWhat “shopper promiscuity” means and why it matters for retentionHow customer expectations are changing faster than most brands realiseWhat agentic AI means for product discovery and online shoppingWhy traditional SEO alone is no longer enoughHow contextual product content improves discoverability in AI searchWhy smaller brands must double down on differentiationWhat Australian retailers can learn from China, the US, and global leaders1. Australia is moving from behind to aheadJordan shares that Australia's eCommerce penetration has now caught up with major global markets and is on track to move ahead, making this one of the most important periods for local retailers to adapt and invest.2. Delivery speed is no longer a nice-to-haveThe conversation highlights how every extra day in delivery time can materially reduce conversion rates. Faster fulfillment, smarter inventory placement, and stronger logistics partnerships are becoming essential.3. Shoppers are less loyal and more willing to switchAustralian households are buying from more brands than ever before. That creates more opportunity, but also more pressure for retailers to win every experience.4. AI is changing how products get discoveredThe future of discoverability is moving beyond keywords and attributes. Retailers need richer, more contextual product content that helps AI tools understand when, why, and for whom a product is relevant.5. World-class user experience is now the baselineAustralian retailers are no longer competing in isolation. They are competing against the best digital experiences in the world, and mediocre checkout, delivery, and navigation experiences will cost them.Australia's eCommerce market is becoming one of the most dynamic globallyFaster delivery is driving meaningful conversion gainsAI-driven shopping traffic is rising fast and could become material very quicklyChatGPT may influence shopping, but it may not fully replace retailersSmaller brands still have room to win if they differentiate clearlyClick-and-collect and parcel lockers are still major opportunities for improving convenience and conversion“You are no longer competing in your own market. You are competing with the world's best.”“Cheap is easy. Differentiation is the real game.”“Traditional SEO is still important, but context is becoming the new competitive advantage.”“Mediocre eCommerce experiences are not going to survive in Australia anymore.”

When children grow up and look back on their childhood, what do they remember most about their parents? It turns out it's not what many parents assume. This episode begins with research revealing which parenting behaviors leave the strongest, longest-lasting impressions — and how they shape adult relationships. https://time.com/4097995/parenting-kids-remember/ Some emotions can completely hijack your day. Anger, anxiety, frustration, and stress often feel automatic — as if you have no control once they show up. But that's not actually true. Dr. Ryan Martin explains science-backed ways to regulate emotions both before they spiral and in the moment. Ryan is Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and Professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay, and author of several books on emotions, including Emotion Hacks: 50 Ways to Feel Better Fast (https://amzn.to/4qrv9fj). Laughter feels good — but why do we do it? And why do humans laugh so much more than other animals? Is laughter actually good for your health, or is it just enjoyable? And what makes something funny in the first place? Christopher Duffy joins me to unpack the science and psychology of laughter. He's a comedian, television writer, host of the TED podcast How to Be a Better Human, and author of Humor Me: How Laughing More Can Make You Present, Creative, Connected, and Happy (https://amzn.to/3LjKOyi). Why does one negative moment stick with us while positive experiences fade so quickly? In this episode of Psychology and Stuff, host Alison Jane Martingano welcomes back Dr. Ryan Martin – psychology professor, author of Emotion Hacks, and dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at UW-Green Bay – to explore new research showing how negative emotions linger longer than positive ones, especially for people who experience anxiety. Ryan (also known as "The Anger Professor") breaks down the science behind emotional habituation, explains why our brains are wired to hold on to bad feelings, and discusses how evolution, anxiety, and memory shape our emotional lives. Together, they explore practical ways to manage emotions more intentionally without falling into toxic positivity, and how to make positive moments last longer.
Anger can be a scary topic for a lot of people. It usually doesn't feel good when you're experiencing it and it can be associated with behaviors that are very frightening indeed. But Dr. Ryan Martin, who is one of the few academics specializing in anger and who has written two books about it, says anger is a normal and even beneficial emotion to experience. It's your body's way of indicating that some injustice has been done, either to you or someone else. And that's good information to have. He says that if we can listen to anger for what it's telling us about ourselves and our surroundings, without throwing punches, it can lead to a more balanced and thoughtful life and, in the end, a more peaceful life. He also shares why so-called rage rooms are not really good for your anger at all (it's kind of like drinking in a bar to address your alcoholism) and how he's taught his own kids to own their anger and process it.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. It's Thursday, and we're back with a guest conversation built for leaders who want practical psychology without the fluff. Today: how to feel better, think clearer, and lead smarter with Dr Ryan Martin — The Anger Professor. Guest intro Dr Ryan Martin is a psychologist and emotion researcher known as The Anger Professor. In this conversation he explains why emotions are information, not emergencies, and how small, upstream decisions shape how you feel hours later. His new book lays out 50 research-backed “emotion hacks” that anyone can use at work and at home. Episode summary We start with a classroom exercise that reveals our brains still run ancient threat software. Ryan's Why We Feel model shows how stimuli, mood, interpretation, feeling, and expression combine to create what we experience as emotion. He shares practical in-the-moment tools, then challenges leaders to address root causes: sleep, hydration, nature, worldview, and daily choices. We finish with a manager's checklist for mapping emotional incidents and a simple mantra method for tough moments. Key takeaways Treat emotions as signals. They give you information and energy to act. Most regulation happens upstream. Sleep, hydration, nature, movement, and digital boundaries set your baseline. Worldview matters. Beliefs about people, self, and the future can drive anger, anxiety, or resilience. Use in-the-moment tools wisely. Breathing, grounding, and naming the feeling help you de-escalate and think clearly. Leaders need a map. Diagram the stimulus, mood, interpretation, feeling, and behaviour for yourself and for your team before you act. Practical tools mentioned Grounding: 5 things you can see, 4 you can hear, and so on. Mantras: a short phrase to anchor attention and guide the next step. Nature with attention: unplug and actively notice what you see to reduce rumination. Recognition over suppression: acknowledge the feeling, then choose the response. Worldview audit: do I trust people, see myself as capable, and view the future as hopeful? Send us a textEver wonder why soccer fields seem to ignite emotions like few other places? In this eye-opening conversation, Dr. Ryan Martin – known as the Anger Professor – reveals the perfect psychological storm that makes pitches emotional pressure cookers.Dr. Martin challenges our fundamental understanding of anger, explaining it's not inherently negative but rather a signal of perceived injustice or goal-blocking. On the soccer field, this manifests when calls feel unfair or when someone believes the referee is preventing them from achieving their objective – winning. What makes sporting events uniquely volatile is the combination of high stakes, subjective decisions, and elevated physiological states that mirror emotional arousal. For referees facing sideline rage, Martin offers practical wisdom: find your "pause button" by taking just a few seconds before responding to heated situations. This tiny delay gives everyone's brain oxygen to move past the reactive "lizard brain" response. Communication proves equally crucial – briefly explaining significant decisions helps fill information vacuums that would otherwise be filled with assumptions about bias or incompetence. The most powerful insight might be his explanation of why referees ruminate on negative interactions long after matches end. This tendency to replay difficult moments isn't a weakness but evidence of caring deeply about excellence. While emotionally uncomfortable, this reflection process ultimately drives improvement when channeled constructively.Whether you're a veteran referee seeking better match management techniques, a coach wanting to understand sideline dynamics, or a parent navigating youth sports culture, this conversation offers transformative perspectives on channeling emotions productively in competitive environments.Ready to transform how you handle emotions on the pitch? Listen now and discover why understanding anger might be the most powerful tool in your referee toolkit.Dr. Ryan Martin can be found here:https://alltheragescience.com/martin/https://www.instagram.com/angerprofessor/https://www.tiktok.com/@angerprofessorSupport the show
