At 16, he earned his first national coaching license, becoming the youngest licensed coach in South Florida’s history. During the summer of 2020, Micah published his first book, “Step Into My Shoes: Memoirs From the Other Side of America”, a series of memoirs focusing on racial injustice. Shortly after the publication of his book, Micah began working on social justice projects with media companies across the nation to help spread awareness about social injustice. As a psychology student in college, Micah also developed a strong interest in mental health. In 2022, he published his second book, “Battle Scars & Blossoms: A Journey Through the Mind”, a fictional work dealing with grief, emotional suppression, and the stigmas around therapy. The novel led to partnerships with local schools and international mental health institutes to facilitate conversations around mental health. Late in 2024, Micah graduated with his master’s degree and released his third book, “When the Record Stops Spinning,” a science-fiction story about purpose, identity, and healing your inner child. Art as Therapy: Heather Clements' Story| HarmonyTALK #66

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 5, 2025 30:05

Heather Clements combines realistic portraiture, expressive abstraction, and elements of flora and fauna to represent a symbiotic relationship with nature. After growing up in Northern Virginia, she earned her BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art before moving to Panama City, Florida. For Heather, creating art not only adds beauty with meaning into the world, but is a means for escaping depression. The category 5 hurricane that hit the Florida Panhandle took away so much of Heather’s life, including the nature she loved by destroying 70-90% of the trees over millions of surrounding acres. Within months she also lost multiple loved ones. After a year without making art, deep in grief and depression, the only thing that saved her was a week of isolation unplugged in the woods far from home, where she finally made gobs of healing art. Since then Heather’s art has evolved and exploded onto giant walls through expressive murals, making art accessible to all. Through her art, she hopes to move others to develop a deeper connection with their own natural surroundings. That bond encourages more sustainable practices, but also stronger mental health. Now residing in nature in Asheville, North Carolina, Heather is embracing creating the art her inner-most weirdo yearns to make. She has expanded into creating interactive art, through her new book “Pull Me Apart” with pull-tabs, spin wheels, and more, and numerous interactive murals.
